About 16 years old, and my brother had got 11th row tix for Kansas at the Forum in LA California. Opening act was Thin Lizzy. 56 years later, still in the top 5 concerts. And I was even lucky enough to open for them twice when Sykes and Gorham did that later effort around 2000.
I was 17 when The Boys Are Back in Town hit the radio and it was such a thrill I pulled the car OVER and cranked the stereo and sat there stunned, and it's been in my top 5 or 6 favorite songs ever since.
I was one of those early followers in early 70's Top hat club Spennymoor Having a beer with the guys in Vane Arms. Told me he was the only black Irish bastard you'll ever meet in your life ( in his great Irish accent) Still listening to Tin Lizzy right now, 49 years later. Best band ever
What a feather in your Rock cap! Wished I could have seen them ! Phil died 2 months before I sobered up. In my moments of struggle I thought of how I wish HE could’ve sobered up & still been with us. Phil’s music & memory of him helped keep me sober those first years . Even tho he’s not here, he still is . Ever notice all really top notch rockers ALL KNOW WHO HE IS? Lizzy is my all time favorite band still
Listening to this. "the manager"saved the band twice recognising Whiskey in The Jar" and "The boys are back in Town" as hits . He deserves as much credit as the band members.
U r quite correct. Sadly, something must have happened that this man didn’t have a part in this feature. Listen, the band is great. The cowboys song is incredible and few know it. The studio recordings could have been more refined. This band was nearly as good as any rock band….
Saw them at the Sydney opera house steps in the late 70's. The early morning sound check by Gary and Scott turned into an epic guitar battle. Was the highlight of the day.
One of the most iconic bands, great sounds and great musicians, Eric Bell's playing on Whiskey in the The Jar is still phenominal to hear now, a great group in British music history and Phil had a superb voice and was a great front man, well done guys and RIP Phil. This is an excellent showcase for the group, thank you.....
The twin guitars might have been an insurance policy but it turned out to be genius. The layers and interplay are still standards in straight-ahead rock.
It was very cool and unique, but I think it was the reason why the band had guitarists leave a lot. Lead guitarists would have a hard time sharing the spotlight and royalties.
Thank goodness I found Thin Lizzy back in 2010. I never cared for the big 2 songs and In America that's all you ever hear on radio.... I mean, I love those songs now, but back then.....not so much. But I found WILD ONE and it was a fluke. I was floored , that song devestated me and I went on iTunes and found my favorite song of all time (title track to third album, see my thumbnail pic -- that is a poster of Vagabonds......) I've been obsessed ever since
Wild one & Dancing in the moonlight grabbed me, then Suicide, after that Perry Mason episode The case of the lovers leap, fascinating! Lizzy is still my favorite Rock Band
Great band with a couple of fantastic tunes that hang with some of the greatest rock songs of all time in my opinion. Cowboy Song, Jailbreak, The boys are back in Town, Dancing in the Moonlight, I thought they done pretty good for themselves but that Irish Blood & taste for good whiskey amongst other things that taste good would be their handcuffs and anchor that slowed them down to a halt. The sky was the limit but I can't blame a gang of young poor guys trying to get by and tasting fame and all that comes with it for the first time, it's just that I wish they could have enjoyed it for awhile longer because they paid their dues and deserved it. R. I. P. Phil for you had the world spinning like a top even for just a short time. In my eyes you were the man ! 🎸 🇮🇪 🌎 🇺🇸
Downey's drumming on Boys is absolutely fantastic, and very few people understand why. It's a shuffle beat with significant jazz influence in his accents and overall feel. No doubt Downey had some formal training or at least listened to and was influenced by traditional jazz. I've heard numerous "rock" drummers try to play Boys Are Back in Town, and maybe one of them pulled it off convincingly. Most drummers have played so much straight ahead 4/4 they simply cannot play this way. It's exceptional drumming and makes the song what it is.
Never been a drummer myself, but I do notice how much jazz/swingtime drumming has contributed to some famous bands - Peter Criss in Kiss, Bill Ward in Black Sabbath & Bun E Carlos in Cheap Trick, for starters. Something about the contrast gives it a different feel. I'm sure there are other examples as well.
I saw Brian Robertson play on a TV show with his band Wild Horses, with Phil Lynott as the presenter. We went to see the recording of the show with our youth club, circa 1980. I stood right next to Phil Lynott and still remember how immaculately dressed he was. A brown suit and shirt with a canary yellow tie and pocket square. Cool as you like that guy. If I recall correctly the show was called 'Check it Out' and it was on Tyne Tees TV.
love this! so good! so unappreciated in the big picture they didn't just help shape it they were carving on it in the early stages thank god for thin lizzy! Bob Geldof put it perfectly!
The Boys are Back in Town was actually written about The Quality Street Gang in Manchester. The QSG used to drink in a bar run by Phil Lynott's mother, the Clifton Grange Hotel, and the song is a tribute to them.
grabado a fuego en mi memoria,la primera vez que escuche thin lizzy, boys are back in town.anio 77,meson el arco, medina del campo, valladolid, espania.los discos venian de jose, pronto emigrante...
james mcbride I still have my Thin Lizzy ticket from the Glasgow Apollo gig in 1976.....a whole £1.80!! Also saw Status Quo at the same venue when they recorded their “Live” album there in 1976......Quo were twice as expensive as Lizzy....a wallet busting £3.50!!
This IS Spinal Tap! Don't wonder where they came up with the idea for that movie..."Tap" was Thin Lizzy satirized. The only difference was that Thin Lizzy really was that good. The absolute greatest band ever to come out of Ireland.
jailbreak was a staple in every rockers album collection, you had it like frampton live, bad company bad company, led zeppelin 1 thru 4, rush, black sabbath, humble pie, foghat, etc.
Emanresuadeen Well, not going to say that I actually remember much of it...but I do have a ticket stub that says I was there...they opened for Blue Oyster Cult btw...
For a genius of a songwriter for every time I hear jailbreak and he sings “somewhere in this town” I always think ffs Phil,I wonder where eh?What options are there? Not gonna be the fuckin post office is it
Kind of sympathize with Eric Bell on this one… No real musician wants to "fake play" on all the gigs, etc. He lost what is the soul behind being a real musician that only want to keep gtting better and better at your instrument, playing live and not faking it or at least not back then I, I'm sure... Too bad though, but on the upside it led to the best lineup Lizzy ever had (with Scott & Brian Robertson) and with the kind of rock music we hear on "Live & Dangerous" album. The twin guitarists & harmony masters! I do however enjoy all the other albums aswell. For example Chinatown with Snowy White (just listen to Snowy's lead guitar on the singles B-side to Chinatown = Suger Blues, that's extremly well played imo! th-cam.com/video/oMK50wwy8XU/w-d-xo.html Also the last album (Thunder & Lightning) is great imo! Phil was never mediocre in what music he produced and never really stole other ppls stuff either! He kept pushing and pushing the limit for making better music, imo! His first solo album is a master piece aswell!
Thin Lizzy should be in the rock and roll Hall of Fame as great music terrific vocals and as musicians they are superstars ❤😮
Phils vocals are one of the best in Rock history
Agreed
Thin Lizzy's best trait of their music was the breathing space throughout the songs. They knew how to avoid fatiguing the listener with noise.
I was 17 when The Boys Are Back in Town hit the radio and it was such a thrill I pulled the car OVER and cranked the stereo and sat there stunned, and it's been in my top 5 or 6 favorite songs ever since.
Those harmony guitars in Wild One give me chills every damn time. One of my favorite bands of all time.
Amen brother
Absolutely!
Incredible.
Wild One is my favorite song 🎶
I was one of those early followers in early 70's Top hat club Spennymoor

Still listening to Tin Lizzy right now, 49 years later. Best band ever
Cowboy Song is one of the top 10 best songs ever recorded. Masterpiece.
absolutely.In my book as well.
Completely agree
Rix Pix Yeah, along with “Emerald”!
Yes, sir! The solo is one of the tastiest in all of rock! :)
Agree, always my absolute favourite Lizzy song
One of the greatest bands in human history
Been a Lizzy fan since the 70s and saw 'em in 1981 and they were Awesome! Great band.

Phil seemed like a really sweet and easy going guy. God he's missed.
Scott had the ultimate rock n roll hair. They were a huge influence of my musical world.
Phil's vocal, the vocal..freakin' awesome
Saw them at the Sydney opera house steps in the late 70's. The early morning sound check by Gary and Scott turned into an epic guitar battle. Was the highlight of the day.

The Eric Bell years are as good as the Jailbreak band among Lizzy Fans. Two different styles but equally loved.
@@macadoo2530 Thanks for that, not heard of them but I will look them up now.

Damn. All these guys seem so down to earth and “real”. Breaks my heart to see their lives starting to come apart.

The measure of a great rock band: "We didn't kill anyone." LOL! Love it; and love this band.
Screwball McAdams "we didnt kill any one." Enter motley crue....
Yeah,they ain't Phil Spector......
Boys are back, I was around 12 then and when that came on the radio it was instant, some songs you need a few listens, not this one.
Wishing I would have seen Phil and the boys live
Robert Almeraz my biggest regret 💔
This band was very special. You just know that their effortless performance
Love the guitar harmonies on Wild One.
The Jailbreak album should be in every rockers top 10 ... Forever ✊😎👍

you are spot on - Brian taught me for a year when I was a kid, got to hang out with him every Saturday - he is the Bruce Lee of drumming
Thin Lizzy and Rush. 1976 was a breakout year for both.
Phil had such a great voice!!

Saw this line up with Status Quo as the opener....$4.00 for a ticket....I still can't believe I shared oxygen and a planet with Phillip Lynott !!!!
I saw them on the Jailbreak tour (Birmingham) - they were just brilliant at that time!
Dundee , Scotland just after Renegade was released. Almost took the roof off the Caird hall. Fantastic

I wish i could pay 400$ to see phil with em. I know they tour, but who are they now other than a cover band
Loved Lizzy since jailbreak! Robbo is so cool love ‘em!!!
I love to go back in time in to a little club and watch wild one 😁 harmonies
Love the harmonies on that one.
Nice to see Frank Murray here. Sad that it's now nearly two years. RIP.
ZappaIrl
, Thank you for uploading it!
They were so freakin' awesome.
At 6:50 Scott talks about the song that didn't make it on the Jailbreak album. Anyone knows what song that was?
Fantastic documentary
LOVE Brian "Robbo" Robertson! Awesome everyone in Thin Lizzy. Great Memories...xoxo
Spot on Bob G! Slash you pick the best when you copied that Style! BRAVO!
Yours sincerely, Lonely Boy.. -Love that song!
..and let's be real - Prince's Purple Rain look was about 90% Phil
This IS Spinal Tap! Don't wonder where they came up with the idea for that movie..."Tap" was Thin Lizzy satirized. The only difference was that Thin Lizzy really was that good. The absolute greatest band ever to come out of Ireland.
5:00 min WOW - what a beautiful shirt Phil is wearing while he plays "Wild One"
jailbreak was a staple in every rockers album collection, you had it like frampton live, bad company bad company, led zeppelin 1 thru 4, rush, black sabbath, humble pie, foghat, etc.
Part 3 is blocked/removed. As are all the reposts listed in parts 1,2 & 4, including PB's recent post. Can someone please repost? Sigh...

My Favourite Thin Lizzy song is The Boys Are Back in Town.
love their story

I've never heard that expression

May she rest in peace with respect... Wonderful lady that raised such a star!!
RIP PHILOMENA!!!
Yes Sir ...and a few Others Toooo ...😎🇬🇷🎸🎼👍✌
love this sound and groove
4:43 Those boys were pretty tight. Talent and good chemistry.
Learnt a lot.Thank you
Bob Geldof @8:00 should have put them on the Live Aid lineup. Coulda saved Phil's life.
What's your favourite Thin Lizzy song? Mine is Dancing in the moonlight. Savage band
Mine too , and wild one & Suicide
the allman brothers had to've been an influence on that twin guitar sound
Skynrd was for sure.
Are there any ladies who would like a little more irish in them. classic :)
No part 3? I really wanted to hear about the Gary Moore years.
Years? Gary was with the band for short periods. He knew better. Mostly because of Phil and Scott's heroin habits.
Anyone know where I can get part 3 of this? Tried everywhere and I know its blocked. Any link or anything?
Very weird how part 3 is not here.
Twin lead guitars is what did it - they later went to three lead guitars - no one has beaten that sound.
Scott was my crush, he still looks great!
For years I always thought it was Deano’s bar in Rhyl it’s like jimi Hendrix kiss this guy when it’s kiss the sky just shows you
That Scott may be errrrrrr an older man, but he’s fkin gorgeous lol
Amen, sister. 😉
Effortless guitar work. Greatness...
where is part 3 !!!

Love Phil’s voice. A smoother Springsteen
Is the narrator Phil Glennister - The legend of Gene "Genie" Hunt himself?
3 times I saw them,and 1 time I bought tickets(Reading '79) but they didn't show(scorpions filled in)
Robbo has done a lot of damage to himself through alcohol.
Why don`t you leave a gap between sentence and ?

Paul Corcoran him and a million others!
very peculiar comment chain

The best ever
Swear that's actually Gary Moore on 13:01, not Robbo
Yeah that was when Robbo had been bottled. Gary Moore stood in for Robbo when Thin Lizzy supported Queen.
Yeah, nice documentary...I got to see Thin Lizzy in '78...don't recall much though...
***** Yeah, probably...combined with the fact that it's almost 40 years ago...
Alan Jankowski And as they say, if you can remember the 70's you weren't really there.

Interesting Boys Are Back In Town wasn't even in line to be on the album. WOW! Rock N' Roll!
the Alvin Lee school of guitar faces
Good observation 👍
Erm no mention of wishbone ash..who Phil says that saw when they got off the boat..who made him think of twin guitsrs
Poor Eric.....what became of him after that giving in to a bit of doubt......a front guy like Lynott come very thin on the ground....>>>7:56
He tours still
i saw G^ary Moore first gig ?
What were the five that didn't make it?
7:59 could agree more with Bob Geldof
Ol Robbo hasnt been very good to himself now has he?
9:02 looks worrisome. Phil is slurring a bit and itching his nose. Bad sign.
Fight or Fall is growing on me

13:43-13:48 that is my favorite part, I can imagine him saying "no please don't, that is quite rude you know"
