I loved how Rob was just mocking Doug during his rant.

I have to agree with Rob I'm afraid Doug. I think one of the reasons why Jurassic World will NEVER live up to the first film is because well, we all grew up seeing it. We all had a feeling of joy and excitement the first time watching the film and we want to have a feeling like that again. But. It can only happen once. You can never get that feeling back. Now Jurassic World isn't a perfect movie but I'd say its a great movie overall when you look at it as just a film. Its a sequel yes. But if you go in thinking this will be as ground breaking as the first film you will be disappointed. I give the creators a lot of credit because the one thing I thought they did really well was take the Dinosaurs and make them into Animals again.Treat them with the respect you would an actual living being. The second and third films just make the Dino's out to be just action set pieces and nothing more which is what ultimately betrays the thought of the first movie. Jurassic World in my eyes is the true successor to the first film because for the most part it lives up to not only John Hammond's vision but also Spielberg's vision too. Treating the Animals like real living creatures instead of movie monsters. Jurassic World is a great film. Its not as good as the first but the makers didn't want it to be. They just wanted to tell a story and try and give people that feeling they got when they were children. They may not of succeeded on every level. But the love for the original is definitely there. Me personally I thought the CGI looked fine and well if you didn't enjoy the film or thought it was underwhelming I understand. Each to their own. I just got such an overwhelming feeling of love and enjoyment out of this film that I'd happily see it again and again. I love the Jurassic Park franchise and I am glad we have a true sequel to the first.

JokerJawzDude92 Sometimes, I wake up to the sound of that annoying ring tone from the cell phone in Jurassic Park 3 and the sight of that ugly kid's face. I feel cold and clammy, and then the inanity of the plot is suddenly reminded. "Why did Dr. Grant say he would never go back on that island and does it anyway? Why are those parents so irresponsible to get all those people killed for a dumb paragliding ride?" Jurassic Park 3 was like my Vietnam. That movie sucked so hard. People rage about Batman & Robin but that movie knew it was cheesy and stupid and had fun with it; JP3 was like the youngest brother of the high school football captain who can't pass, throw, or run the ball trying to say, "look at me, everyone! I can be just as good!" Screw that movie.

I thought JP3 had some nice ideas, like having the Spinosaurus in general and whatnot. The execution was just horrible though.

***** I thought the CGI was fine. Certainly better than JP3. But I think we're so used to seeing CGI by now that we find it a lot easier to criticize. And in the original JP, the CGI was very minimal. But now, its easier and cheaper to do it, so they get a little heavy-handed with it. That's what got on my nerves about the Star Wars prequels. It looked like a video game most of the time.

    • @renegade637
      @renegade637 9 ปีที่แล้ว +5

I, also, thought the CGI was pretty good. What particularly comes to mind is when we first see the tamed raptors (obviously, it’s debatable as to how best to describe them: tamed, domesticated, subservient to Owen). I was just glad they went back to the JP raptors and not the JP3 ones. As for Doug’s perceptions of some of the plot holes, the teams that went out to find Indominus, I’m not surprised they didn’t know what to expect. Since when does a company make sure all employees are aware of everything that might happen in a situation? I saw at least 4 separate areas that may or may not know what is going on between each other: the science lab, day-to-day operations, management, animal control… What is the likelyhood that the left hand is going to tell the right hand what is going on?
In all honesty, I like James and Mike’s review of the movie better. Furthermore, I consider this an intellectual popcorn flick. It’s smart enough to keep you interested and mindless enough to just sit back and enjoy.

The Sibling Rivalries where both Doug and Rob disagree with each other are much more fun and interesting to watch than the ones where they just echo each other's thoughts.

Clock this is the one exception where i HATE that. Most of the time, Doug kept on interrupting Rob, and honestly the whole i saw Doug as this kid who was throwing a tantrum because he didn't get what he wanted. I usually like these sibling rivalries where the two have opposites opinions, but Doug ruined the whole thing for me.

killer92173 what are you talking about. He makes legitimately good points and his ways of complaining about it is similar to how he plays the nostalgia critic when he gets really angry. So I don’t know why you hated it

    Let me summarize this video:
Rob: I'd like to have a rational discussion about this
Doug: I WILL SCREECH AND RAMBLE ON ABOUT HOW I HATE THIS MOVIE BUT I ALSO LOVE THIS MOVIE!
Rob: ...okay, but can we talk about-
Doug: I WANT THIS TO BE A GORY BLOODFEST AND A DUMB 70s DISASTER FILM AT THE SAME TIME!
Rob; Okay, I can see that, but-
Doug: I WILL MAKE INCORRECT STATEMENTS ABOUT THE FILM AND THE DINOSAURS WHILE FLAILING MY ARMS ABOUT AND OH I HATE THIS I HATE THIS... ITS A GREAT MOVIE.
Rob:...how the hell are we related?

CeltycSparrow and I actually agree with Rob on this one. I liked this movie too. I think Jurassic World is the only worthy successor to Jurassic Park. The dinosaurs in this one commanded my respect and in some instances they looked real to me.

CeltycSparrow they didn't look real but they looked cool, so that's it.
I don't get the boner people seem to have for super realistic CGI effects. Deep down everyone knows it's fake. It's cool to see super realistic effects once in a while, but in 20 years we'll look to today's good GCI and average CGI all the same, as the technology will have improved. Just the horrible CGI and the awesome CGI (wich can be counted in your fingers) will stand out. I take a good movie with so-so CGI over a shit movie with mind blowing CGI anytime.

42Caio (Caio Esteves) I agree with you. I will say this...these guys pointed out there wasn't any moment as intense as the T-Rex attack in the first film...I think the ending to this movie came very close to that intensity if it didn't match it completely. As soon as Claire lights the flare and the door opens I was like "YES. THIS is what I came for."

Greg Towarnicki I think most people look at it like this: if you can tell it's CGI, it's bad CGI. I found Pratt to be the only character that didn't bored be to tears, but I don't really mind since this isn't a character driven movie.

I don't get Doug's complaint about there not being enough gore. It's a PG-13 movie, of course they didn't show a lot of gore. If they had they would have gotten an R rating. In fact none of the other Jurassic Park movies have had much in the way of gore to begin with.

Pendragon You're 100% correct. Especially since all of Doug's "ideas" in this review for how the movie should be would've been things I have no doubt he'd HATE if they actually went through with it. Essentially, Doug wanted a movie without characters or any kind of emotional core whatsoever. "Here's an idea, why waste any time? Why instead of having a group of characters waiting to be eaten, JUST EAT THEM?!" Cause that's not a fucking movie!!

  • @CULater000
    @CULater000 9 ปีที่แล้ว +24

I really don't get most of what Doug is ranting about - why would you make a Jurassic Park movie with a R rating? It's a family movie franchise with some nightmare fuel for children. Also his insistance on just because a film is a 'B-Movie' every single aspect of that movie has to be of 'B-quality' seems unnecessarily rigid thinking. He seems to get more worked up about what the movie didn't do rather than what the movie did do or at least tried to do.

Raptor DNA doesn't translate to it being able to communicate, it was predictable. But the twist wasn't "it's a raptor" it was "they can communicate" which makes sense considering MOST species can not communicate with other species even if they're related. It is actually kinda unsettling that it could communicate even growing up in complete isolation- if anything that just makes it stupid because of its improbability

Like, pick a lane dude, cause we all know that if they DID have people running around during the climax or eating people you'd have complained that it was just a wanna-be Michael Bay film.
Like, these are still ANIMALS we're working with here. I completely agree with Rob on the whole "you have to work within the framework of your own story" thing, because absolutely you do. I mean the Avengers 2 came out witch alot of scenes that were extremely greenscreenish, like that scene with Scarlatte Witch stopping the train. That shot was CGI done terribly.
Here, I thought the CGI was just fine. The dinosaurs might not have been implemented absolutely perfectly, but they're animations were smooth and realistic, the lighting was realistic, and you would believe that the dinosaurs were there if you weren't trying to compare it to a movie with tons of animatronic shots. Not a single point in the movie did they get that low.
And yet the responses to both movies?
Avengers 2 "The CGI wasn't the best at times..."
Jurrasic World " Oh my god the CGI was so horrid it made my testicles shrink to the size of an atom 0/10"

Jurassic World was a fun ride, it was worthy to be in the Jurassic Park franchise.
Some ideas that could've been better?
    1. Coke 2 was bred to be a veggie eater that just looks like a carnivore/T-rex to attract tourists
-It was guarded with much less care than the meat eaters.
    2. Jurassic World is under constant private hired militia/mercenary merged with US military to make sure if any dinosaurs escaped, it's their job to rescue the tourists
-explains Chris Pratt's character and the other military guy's involvement.
    3. Coke 2 escaped during a transfer to its exhibition location because of its tracker glitches, due to bad weather.
4.Trackers contains shockers, stormy weather is ruining the shocking function, which made it hard to stun all dinosaurs.
5.All remaining survivors were delivered to Coke 2's (empty) exhibition center, where there's a giant moat that would protect them from dinosaurs, except from the pteradons.
6.Coke 2 utilized the camouflage ability a few more times while hunting Attack on Titan armored Titan style.
7.Coke 2 is a veggie eater but is hunting purely for sport
-it's ripping tourists apart without care for food
8.When the military entered, it was a dinosaur battle royale of both humans against dinosaurs and dinosaurs against dinosaurs.
9.Finally, the military contained all the dinosaurs, except for Coke 2
-because they were trained to contain all species except for the hybrid. Which was yet to be studied but the boardroom is pushing them to put it out on display.
10.Coke 2 never had any raptor genes
    - but due to genetic splicing of different DNA and random central dogma bullcrap, the DNA mixed between different species made a convergent DNA equivalent of raptor intelligence and was able to communicate with them.

For once I agree with Rob. I think Doug analyzes this movie way too much for a movie that is suppose to be lighthearted and fun. Who cares if Chris Pratt and the Clare character don't share much screen time, or that he can communicate with raptors, or other issues, YOU SUSPEND YOUR DISBELIEF. Unlike the previous they actually bothered giving us more than one dimensional characters. Also, while the Petrarex hybrid did look artificial at times, the scene of them in the part was really heart wrenching considering how many innocent people in the part were attacked, which was to me the highlight of the movie, more than the T-Rex fight. This movie had a lot of passion behind it, and I am not usually a technical kind of guy, but I admire the cinematography, the effects and how well they managed to deliver a sense of fear and dread. Heck, at least Chris Pratt was more memorable than Tom Hardy as Mad Max.

Watching Rob's face during Doug's rant definitely summed up my reactions. Absolutely agreed with Rob. One main thing, though: No one trusted Vincent D'Onofrio's character, they only went along with the things he did was because he threw his authority around in the control room and Chris Pratt didn't want the Raptor plan to end badly.
The only thing I agree with Doug about is the look of Indominus Rex. The sickly-white skin and the camo was fine, but it's mouth opened so far open that the character just looked silly. It would have looked cooler to have looked less like a standard bipedal-carnivore, but I think they wanted to not allow an alien-looking creature.

I don't get where this controversy about Jurassic World ignoring The Lost World and JP3 comes from. The official spin-off website for the film makes reference to Hoskins' leadership of a "clean-up" operation in 2001, which involved shooting down the Pteranodon that were seen flying to the mainland at the end of JP3. This confirms that JP3 is still considered canon, which means in turn that The Lost World is also canon, as it was directly referenced in JP3. Indominus really didn't look like just a giant raptor either. It lacked killing the toe claws, the head was a different shape, raptors didn't have scutes, quills and horns, and not to mention, it had a heavier build and didn't sound like a raptor at all.

When a raptor is pissed and wants to eat someone, you see it, when it's actually respecting their alpha, you SEE THAT it's its FACE! Am I the only one who thinks the CGI was pretty good? It was very convincing in many parts, like with the Raptors in the muzzles, and though I could always tell it was CG, there are very little, if any, instances where movies have had 100% convincing CGI. I think this is a fine example of how the Walkers, as well as much of the movie going world, has just become desensitized to CGI. "Awful,""terrible," and "butt-ugly" are waaay too heavy handed words to describe this CG and just speaks to how used to CG we've gotten.
Also, I have no idea what Dough was getting on about making the Andomidus a Frankenstein's hodge podge mess. That would have just been stupid and unfrightening. What were the scariest and most iconic dinosaurs of the first movie? The T-Rex and the Raptor, so making a giant combo of the two was the most logical and convincing choice.

    1) They were on a different island, so it doesn't really affect the new film to start.
    2) Ian Malcolm's book is a talking point and both 2 and 3. And guess where it showed up? On someone's desk in _Jurrassic World_. Look for it. It's there.

khknight The thing is, the more you watch CGI, the more you except the falseness of it all. When you're Like Doug or even Rob, and grew-up seeing movies with amazing practical effects ,CGI cannot compare to them. In the 90's, and at that the early 90's, they created masterful levels of CGI. CGI that looked so good, you could hardly tell that it was fake. We have advanced in our CGI since then, for better and for worse. Better because talented animators can make insanely real looking images, and allow audiences to feel connected to the film they are watching. On the other hand, that also means it allows " not so good" animators to work on projects; given that they want the movie to come out faster.. I'm sure the artist's that worked on this movie worked hard to complete it, but I doubt they have the raw talent that those Animator's of the original JP had. Today's audiences,( especially those from the age group from toddler to young adult) tend to not care about the realistic quality of CGI anymore. I for one, was only impressed once in JW. In JP, I sit in awe at the amazing quality of those realistic dinosaurs ,even today. And i'd say given the tools and money at their disposal, the JW team could've made a proper squeal/reboot.

Y'all notice how Doug keeps saying "monsters?" That's the one thing I really don't like about Jurassic Park. Any of them. I love the movies, but they all do this one thing that I absolutely hate: they do just that, paint the carnivorous dinosaurs as "monsters". Rather then behaving like animals (WHICH DINOSAURS FUCKING WERE) that are looking to survive, all the dinosaurs in the Jurassic Park series act like fucking psychopaths, running around axing people off like the villain in a slasher movie. That's the one thing I truly hate Spielberg for: he painted the public's perception of dinosaurs as hyper-dangerous super-murderers rather then wild animals. You know what a real Velociraptor would probably do if it ran into a human being, just by chance? It would probably think "Whoah, what the fuck is that!? I don't know what that is, which freaks me the fuck out, so I'm gonna get the fuck out of here!" and it would then bolt. Do you know what a Velociraptor raised in Jurassic Park would do if it's pen was opened? "Huh, my pen is open. Of course, I've lived in this pen all my life, and have come to associate it with security and home, and I'm routinely brought food and kept safe as long as I remain here, so I think I'll just stay here and keep my eye on that opening in case anything scary comes for me. Oh, look, a human, good, they'll keep me safe, or maybe bring me some food, that would be nice." Spielberg's raptors? "Oh, look, my pen is open, BETTER FUCKING KILL EVERYONE LOL."
And I'm not stupid, I know animals can be dangerous. And dinosaurs were probably even more dangerous, because they were in many cases bigger and stronger then modern animals. But still, there is a line. No wild animal is ever going to deliberately place itself in anything that might be danger for the sole purpose of committing murder. And if they were raised in a safe hatchery, and later a safe enclosure, in both of which they were taken care of by humans, they would not flip their shit and start killing people at the earliest opportunity.

    • @mckenzie.latham91
      @mckenzie.latham91 9 ปีที่แล้ว

bigfatcarp93 Actually if a real raptor saw you it would contact it's pack to hunt you down and eat you, these were not the timid and flighty animals of today.
In the first Jurassic Park they have a ten minute conversation about the morals and ethics of bringing back extinct creatures into the modern era, and both Grant and Ellie as well as Malcolm mention how these are basically animals who have no idea what era their in and will defend themselves and act like animals. Even in this movie Chris Pratt says these creatures don't know they were made in test tubes and have animals instincts.
The Sick triceratops and the first reveal of the Brachiosaur are tantamount to Spielberg's attempt to make these more than monsters, the problem is that the carnivores were built to be alpha predators and are, the reason their so scary is because they are following instinct and nature.
the raptors are expert hunters capable of problem solving and working together as a pack therefore they act like such, the T-Rex was a juggernaut alpha predator and is shown as such.
the reason their called monsters is because they are seen as such since they are hybrids created in labs, however, one thing i felt was the point of this movie was too show how the I-Rex was not a regular animal but was a purposely created genetic Frankenstein creation of man whereas most of the other species had minor hybridization. So having the T-rex, Raptor and Mollasaur take her down in the end was their way of showing nature taking down the technology created monster.

    • @bigfatcarp93
      @bigfatcarp93 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Mckenzie .Latham Erm, no. No on several counts. First of all, you are not incorrect that that is what Spielberg was _trying_ to do, portray them as more then just monsters. But if look at almost *every single thing* dinosaurs have appeared in since, you can see that he clearly failed. All people have done since is portray them as killer monsters. Look at almost every single dinosaur movie, TV show and video game since the release of Jurassic Park to see this pattern. Not every one, but almost every one.
Secondly, where exactly are you getting this information that dinosaurs were apparently so much more aggressive then modern animals? Because that's almost certainly bullshit. Animals don't waste energy on pointless aggression, and they don't blindly attack what they don't understand. An animal's point is _survival_, and doing either of those things is contrary to that.

bigfatcarp93 Ironically, Dr. Grant said a million times in the first movie that they're "animals, not monsters". The Raptors and the Spinosaurus certainly disagree with him there.
That said, I wouldn't say ALL the creatures are depicted as psychopaths. The T. rex stops chasing the heroes when she realizes it's no longer worth it, the Dilophosaurus was a baby who was mostly just acting out of curiosity, the Pteranodons were parents looking to feed and protect their babies, etc. Additionally, the T. rex in the first film only ate one human (because she was hungry) and said human was the slimy lawyer. Oh, and the T. rex and Stegosaurus in the second film mostly went after the humans for threatening/going near their babies and the first Compy attack happened because a little girl made the profoundly stupid decision to give one of them food.
This extends to Jurassic World in fact. The pterosaurs only attacked out of redirected aggression from being forced out of their habitat by the I-Rex (like a swarm of hornets forced out of their hive), the Mosasaurus only ate Zara because she saw the Pteranodon and wanted to eat it instead and even the raptors act a bit more animal-like than their previous portrayals.

CJCroen1393 Actually, I really liked that about JW: It seemed to me that for once, all the animals were actually acting like animals.

      True.
And to be fair, I think the carnivorous dinos would probably be depicted as monsters even if there was conclusive proof that they were the most docile creatures ever when not hunting. It's a carnivore thing.

A giant raptor? I thought the Indominus looked more like a T-Rex with some added spikes and horns and stuff.

I think Doug's a little too high on his horse; I think it's actually a giraffe at this point. I'm not saying the movie's perfect--fuck no. I agree the CG wasn't great, but it did the job, the world was beautifully realized from a design perspective, they did a good job of weaving the stories together, the characters... well the one villain guy was idiotic but the rest I could see existing. Hell, my only real complaint is that I personally found the older brother to be utterly irredeemable after the divorce talk. But I thoroughly enjoyed the movie and found the way they animated the dinosaurs to give them subtle emotions absolutely brilliant. Not saying it's perfect, but Doug's becoming way too jaded here.
