It's like Hugh Jackman to Wolverine, or RDJ to Iron Man. There's just some casting decisions where it's so perfect and on point, that even the producers know nobody else could fit the role. You don't see an actor portraying a comic book character, you see a comic character come to life. Hell, didn't JK do the voice of Jameson in one of the cartoons as well?
I remember asking that when I was saw this movie as a kid. My older brother told me that a newspaper publisher will always protect his sources as a matter of pride.
That's actually one of the most faithful character adaptations from the comic books. Jameson has adamant journalist's integrity. He once fired Peter, someone who's worked for him for years and has always delivered only the best Spider-Man pics for the paper because he spliced some pics. Jameson looked at Peter as if Pete was dead to him. The guy hates Spider-Man's guts but he's a spectacular journalist
Even Dafoe said he had the most fun in this movie. Honestly, I love his portrayal as the Goblin BECAUSE it's so over the top and Hammed. He literally is a comic book villain. Perfect Jekyll and Hyde feel that the Goblin has in the comics. Seriously, alot of the Goblin at the time in the comics was goofy and warped whenever he's behind the mask, but Norman was cunning and slick. Honestly Dafoe was born to play this role. Better than someone who played a SECOND in a not so "Amazing" Spider-Man...
@@Disconnect350 I do think the MCU has good villains, but they kill them off way too quickly. But I do think they set it up perfect for Norman to step in. See, in the MCU Tony is dead, someone needs to step up and replace Stark Industries. Enter Norman and Harry Osbourne, father and son. With their business, Oscorp. Now that he is in the films, they can use Oscorp and eventually unveil the Goblin however they want.
The nostalgia is strong lmao. He was cool as kid back in the day, but now, its so cringe and I can't help but laugh at him instead of with him. Just because its over the top and fun doesn't mean its good. He's like venom and im willing to bet you didnt enjoy that nearly as much.
@@Sadvillainy Depends which venom. Topher Grace wasn't a good venom, but I sorta did like his design. It was interesting to see a venom who perfectly mimicked the Tobey Spidey suit. But the performance was subpar. Tom Hardy was a decent venom and his design was a definite improvement. The only thing I didn't like about Hardy's venom wasn't even Venom himself. It was Woody Harrelson as Carnage. I can't see him as Cassidy and oh God that wig was so bad. Personally I would've cast the actor who played as Rorschach in the Watchmen films or if they were okay with a younger Cassidy, Cameron Monaghan would do really well.
The only problem is his suit :/ I MEAN WHY?! They had an awesome and creepy AF animatronic mask READY for the movie...and someone said 'oh nononono! No! This will the scare the shit out of kids!' - but hey...THAT WAS THE INTENTION OF GOBLIN AND HOBGOBLIN IN THE FIRST PLACE! - THE FACE OF PURE FEAR! :(
Yep, corny, but sounds like it came right out of a comic book, which is exactly what Raimi was aiming for. This remains one of the most comic booky comic book movies to date.
I enjoyed that J.J.J. defended Parker and played ignorance. Regardless of the character's prejudices, he has journalistic integrity. Plus his hatred of both masks and criminals further shows why he's defiant to Goblin. In that scene, they deepen the character.
I was just thinking about that scene the other day and realized, "Holy crud, Jameson wasn't a total jerk after all!" As a kid I both hated him for disliking Spider-Man, a guy trying to help the city, but also liked how JK Simmons brought him to life (not to mention that he was one of the best things about Spider-Man 3).
Jameson defended Pete in the Spectacular Spider-Man series too when Rhino was wrecking the Bugle. He was using hand signals to tell Peter to run. Just shows that even tho JJ maybe a sourpuss, he's got a heart of gold.

I don't get how Critic would think Jj would give Peter up like that. Like Jj can be a jerk but I doubt he would put his employees in danger especially in the hands of a psychopath. Jerk doesn't always equal emotionless asshole
While Jameson is often a jerk, he also is consistently shown to possess a basic sense of integrity and morality. He would never willingly endanger another person's life, especially one of his own employees. Jameson has never been portrayed as someone who would do something like that -- not in the source material, and not in any adaptations.
I actually like that Jameson sticks his neck out for Peter. In most stories Jameson is a good guy and is just against vigilantes. In spectacular Spider-Man he does the same thing.
I remember seeing a part of a comic where Jameson was asked why he bothered to hire an amateur photographer like Parker, and he referenced Uncle Ben's recent passing, saying something like "the kid needs help."
Well, yeah, but Spectacular was actually well written and thoughtful. Remember the episode where his son becomes a superhero after his dad prompts him when he gains powers, only to turn into a rampaging giant? That show made kids think... That's why it had to be cancelled. Heaven help the USA if the next generation actually starts thinking about moral implications!
@@TonicSpirits Yeah JJ is not an evil man, he can be very kind and helpful. In Spectacular he even risked his life to protect Peter from the Rhino. He just averse to Spiderman due to his dislike of masked vigilantes.
Jameson protecting his sources makes total sense. He's a journalist with an ethical duty to protect his sources. He constantly spins stories but he knows peter is just a kid and he doesn't want to endanger him. You have to consider Jonah is the head of a major media empire and it comes with the territory with him that he'd be a target. Kinda makes Jonah way more likable.
Bad Dragonite he is also just a nice guy he does not like vigilantes bc his son (an astronaut) and others like him never get the praise of spider man as they aren’t seen as the larger than life people they are or at least that’s what I remember

Remember that Family Guy cutaway where Peter thinks a guy is a jerk and learns he gives money to orphans with diseases That’s the equivalent of JJJ protecting Peter even when he’s not paying him for those exclusive shots
we are indeed, as I've seen more than a few comments about it already, but I'm guessing you are wondering why he didn't? Still plenty of time for that, 2 more movies to go and whatever else he does this month.
He and Dafoe were easilly the most on point actors in this movie. JK Simmons puts far more effort in it then he is required to, for such a small role. Meanwhile Dafoe nails Osbornes insanity in the comics
I don’t think Jameson defending Peter by not giving him up needs to be explained at all?? 🤔🤔he’s never been portrayed as a bad person, why would he sacrifice an innocent person to save his own skin? Especially someone who works for him. He’s clearly a man of integrity, and we see that when he fires Eddie Brock for providing the bugle with fake Spider-Man photographs. As much as he hates Spider-Man, he’ll never string him up using fake evidence to do so.
Another reason is my personal theory that he knows he is Spider-man and creates articles demonizing him. Just cause he knows Peter as a teenager and Spider-man will and is always trying to prove him wrong. He knows if everyone knew it would put people he knows, himself included in danger. Along with the fact he only pays him so little to keep Peter Humble.

The Rami films take their inspirations from 60's comics.More lighthearted with "cheese". They still hold up surprisingly well. They actually embrace the "comic book" in every. It is a comic book movie .

because j.k. simmons is the ideal j. jonah jameson as a real life person. he is THAT great. every time you see j. jonah jameson in the comics, you will always hear j.k. simmons' voice in your head. the people that made the MCU knew that j.k. simmons is too good as j. jonah jameson and so they brought him into SM: Far from Home.

I liked the part where Green Goblin crashes through Aunt May's wall and tells her to finish the prayer because typically the villain says something edgy like "god can't save you now" instead we get Goblin taking pleasure in her praying to god for salvation because he takes delight in her suffering and helplessness the way an actual evil villain would

I remember seeing this in theaters and it blowing me away. Now the same scenes I find hilarious. That whole Aunt May scene is positively hilarious. I still love this movie but for different reasons than I did as a kid.
As a _kid_ the Green Goblin terrified me, and Spiderman's brutal beatdown by him was one of the most horrifying things I had ever seen on-screen. But as an adult, it's all so goofy.

That part of the review actually annoyed me. Just because Spider-Man is cornier than most superhero movies doesn't mean it takes less risks. Hell, I can't recall the MCU being more PG13. MJs visible nipples alone would be a no-go.
I've to admit, while I love the MCU Spidey films and the "Amazing" films deserve some praise, the Raimi trilogy is just very unique that I haven't see other movies able to replicate it. It really feels like a comic book movie rather than the current superhero movies.

Many years later, Saban would begin adapting Super Sentai into Power Rangers. So in a way, Spiderman has come full circle.

When you remember Doug's track record of having possible, short term memory loss and failure to put 2 and 2 together on things that even a casual child would notice on most of the films he's reviewed, it isn't surprising either.
Blood and deaths have been in multiple Disney movies that are rated PG, maybe the brutal beat down could be a bit intense for some young kids, but still. And yeah being impaled isn’t seen much in PG movies, but in Norman’s case it was honestly a pretty bloodless one, not helped by his “Oh” right before being impaled makes it a bit hard to take it seriously
As cheesy as these movies can get, the earlier comics were JUST as cheesy. And that's the reason I love them, it's probably the most faithful adaptation of Stan Lee's writing style and tone.
And its not like the movies don't take themselves seriously either spiderman 2 is VERY melancholy and dark and smartly written. But this movie is just as much of a classic imo.
J.K. Simmons is easily the best part of this whole movie. Toby Maguire's awkwardness and Willem Defoe's pure insanity are close seconds, but Simmons is the true meme. The difference is we're laughing WITH him, not at him.
I would not say it like that, i would say it like JK SImmons is the best part AS SIDE character in this movie, so he complements some cheese humor, and maybe some pacing issues(which honestly are not that of a problem). Also Director cut for second movie is amazingly fun, when he wears Spider-Man costume, its hilarious, also his jokes are the best parts of the movies. 😄😂
24:30 Stan Lee said it best; JJ is a good man. He cares about Peter and secretly admires Spider-Man. But he would NEVER admit to it. Kinda like how Snape treats the students badly... but is willingly to protect them at the drop of a hat.

I do not care. Willem Dafoe is still amazing in this movie. Even after all of these years I remember him. He’s definitely one of the most memorable villains I’ve ever seen.
The dialog, camera shots, and everything else in these movies are meant to resemble a comic book, where as the more recent spiderman movies are meant to be more "movie" movie.
not only that... Samie boy went into ridiculous lengths to make his scenes. Hell just look at peter's room. see how decorated it is and how much it aligns with his skills and character.

Jameson has shown this attitude in the comics and other sources alike. He's pretty rude and you're supposed to think he hates spiderman for no reason (even though he actually has a reason), but deep down he still cares about others.
I was also thinking he may just be flying off the handle because of the radioactive spider bite he received. All of the sudden he's a different person now. His whole DNA has been altered. Don't think you'd be all calm and cool and you're usual sweet self. So don't think it's just out of no where.

Why did he talk about the part when Green Goblin say “We’ll meet again Spider-Man!” That was the most comic book like moment in the movie. Same with the scene when Green Goblin and Spider-Man exchanged comebacks in the burning building.
Probably because Doug has admitted several times that he is not a comic book guy. He enjoys a lot of comic book movies but doesn't really know the lore or backstory on many of them and that shows in his reviews.
I don't know. That's pretty much every villain in cartoons who curses the protagonist after defeating him in a fight and promises that they shall meet again for the other day.
While I absolutely agree, I do find it annoying when they throw in comic book lines that don't land at all. Like Spidey calling him Gobbie, a nickname that totally feels undeserved (not to mention quite forced) in the movie, whilst in the comics it developed from a deep rivalry between the two. Same goes for many comic book quips and one-liners like Wolverine saying 'Bub' in the movies. They are tossed in for nostalgia and to make the fans squee themselves but honestly most just fall flat. So yeah it is for sure a comic book moment, but ultimately it was thrown in literally for that reason alone without any actual impact or emotion one would normally feel when reading in the comics. I'm not saying fans won't appreciate and enjoy those moments but can't really expect everyone to have the same reaction, especially if they aren't superfans of the comics or other source material.

There's a theory that Jonah knows Peter is Spiderman, and that he actually supports him. The reason he sound harsh and condemning is that he actually wants Peter to stay on his A-game, and that if he complimented Spiderman, the Webslinger would get lazy.

he never said spiderman 2 didn't warrant a pg-13, he just said the "PG-13" value in the first one is extremely piss poor. I mean, unless you faint at the slightest of blood, then yeah. The Sam Raimi Spider-Man movies were surprisingly ahead of their time. Nowadays, pretty much every scene has been made into a meme. It’s like Raimi could predict the meme culture of the modern day 24:35 It’s called journalistic integrity. A smart journalist protects their sources. But is it really so unbelievable that Jameson would protect Parker out of the goodness of his heart?
Ironically even though he obsesses over the idea that spidey is a menace, most of the comics portray him as being a fantastic journalist. He strictly believez in journalistic integrity and unbiased reporting. Plus his bsckstory sorta points as to why he hates spidermen. His dad was a soldier who was physically abusive to his mum, and it caused him to devolop an inherent distrust to "heroes" because he always suspects they when out of uniform they are violent assholes. Honestly, he really isnt that bad of a person i the comics

It's even in the novelization. Jameson knows that a good journalist always protects his source. And I love this small action because it adds a surprising layer of depth to the character.

Fun fact: During the dinner scene with the turkey. Norman's clothes are blue and red to match spiderman and Peter's clothes are green to match Green Goblin
Aunt May wears blue for Peter, Harry wears red and green because he's between Spider-Man and the Goblin, Mary Jane wears black to impress Norman like Harry asked.
Being a 14 year old that grew up with these movies when I was younger, I really don't like it when people my age say that these films are terrible and MCU Spider-man is better. The Spider-man trilogy is a masterpiece, even with all it's flaws and dated moments. For me, not only was seeing my favourite comic book character come to life amazing. But the way we see Peter grow as a person and deal with the bad parts of life was too inspiring and relatable for me, and still is now. That's only a fraction of the reasons I, and many other people love these films.
I grew up with these movies too, but I gotta say, I really thought Far From Home was fun and good. If they can do a good job with 3 I’ll be really pleased with both trilogies
I appreciate and value the Raimi films more than MCU Spider-Man because Peter is his own self made man and didn't get everything handed to him since the very beginning.
@@virtualboy3596 The MCU Spider-man movies are good, and I'm not gonna try and say they are not. However, my personal issue with those movies is that Peter Parker doesn't really feel like Spider-man. Spider-man isn't meant to have a rich sugar daddy (Tony Stark) who gives him an awesome suit with all those gadgets. Also, Tony Stark has basically replaced Uncle Ben in the MCU, which is something I'm not a massive fan of. Also, the lack of consequences that Peter has to face in the new movies is also something I don't like, he always seems to get away with all of his problems; he leaves Liz at the homecoming dance, he destroys that man's shop (in homecoming), aunt May finds out Peter is Spider-man and...everything is fine. There's no consequences.
Far as I know, Jameson covering for Parker is not out of character. Spectaculars version also put his neck on the line for Peter when Rhino stomped into the Office.

Nah he's full of crap, it's completely understandable to cry on the day you accomplish something and the person who raised you is not there to experience it.

Leandro Botchkarev actually apparently the reason it’s pg-13 is due to the scene in the rain where you can see Mary Janes nipples throught her shirt..... I wish I was making that up but that’s the reason
I remember when Critic though TASM was so much better than the Raimi trilogy. The Amazing Spider Man films are either ostracized or simply forgotten about while the Raimi films are (at least the first two) are seen as nostalgic fun and all of them perfect meme material these days.

@@danielscott5673 I got bad news for you, THOSE and the praying in church for vengeance scenes by both Eddie and Peter are things the symbiote made them both do as it's hosts in stan lee's original spider man comic. Peter parker under the Venom Symbiote's influence would of course be a little awkward while Eddie as it's host would be more menacing, as Eddie was always a by any means sleaze ball whereas Peter typically gives no thought to open aggression/vented anger.
The 1st Raimi Spider-Man is how I got introduced to the character, I even went to the premiere. I can always sit down and watch this film whenever it's on.
The 90s series and this movie in particular are one of the first things I've seen of Spidey! Around the time when my big bro dressed up as Spidey for my birthday party! My history with Spidey is quite an interesting one! 😉
Omar De Jesus I must have lived under a rock.. :/ I loved these films when I was kid. Sure, when talking about the first film, SOME aspects didn’t age too well. But, as an adult, I adore how fun and cheesy it can be. It didn’t take itself TOO seriously and I think that was the point. 18 years later, the original Spidey films always hold a special place to me (even the third film..)
I was thinking the exact same thing. I've not seen any attacks against these films apart from the usual digs at Spider-Man 3. There is still so much goodwill towards these films that Sony added the Raimi version of the spider-suit to the recent PS4 Spider-Man game as part of a patch update.

These were 2000s movies, a time where CGI was still an evolving tech alongside treating the original content with as much respect as possible. It's a love hate series for everyone, but for me these three spiderman movies were the building blocks of spider man movies later on
This review is honestly the most painfully nitpicky and unfair reviews he ever done. He doesn’t explain his opinions well and also has no respect for the fan who love this movie.
As for JJ caring for Peter... Well, he does. It's part of why he's rough on Peter as well - He sort of sees him as a son in a way. God now I need to go look through the comics
When Peter revealed that he was Spider-Man to JJ over dinner, he went on the radio to talk about how Spider-Man is a hero to everyone in the most big mouthed, J. Jonah Jameson way, and it's so perfect
My favorite versions of Jameson are this one, and the one from the Ultimate comics. The guy had a good reason to not like Spider-Man in those comics, and he did stand up for both Peter and Spidey when the times came.
Yeah, Spider-Man was more dark and angst in the early Lee-Ditko comics. In fact, he wasn't much of an energetic smart mouth at the time compared to now.
Yeah. And Andrew Garfield is more like the Ultimate Spider-Man portrayal. I've seen the first few issues of Ultimate Spider-Man, and it's kind of similar to the beginning of The Amazing Spider-Man. I'm just reminded that these movies are actual cinematic perfection and I love every single frame and sound in all three movies. Are they stupid and goofy? Yes, and I love that. Are they ridiculously dated? Yes, and I love that. I say this without one single hint of irony or sarcasm, Tobey will always be my Spider-Man.

He's also never shown to be a true badguy. He's always had a sense of morality and integrity. Take Spiderman PS4, he does admit when Spiderman does good, but in his perspective it always seems like more bad happens when Spiderman is around then when he's not, and he's mostly correct. The idea of the Sam Raimi Spider-Man movies being silly, cheesy and goofy were the point. Not only is it Sam Raimi's style, but Spider-Man comics themselves were over the top silly and goofy. That's why it was a perfect match, Sam Raimi working on Spider-Man films. They fit his style because the source material itself is silly and cheesy.

Doug has made far greater mistakes too consistently about missing the point or the importance of moments in the movies he reviews. Example: not understanding why the white wolf appearing to balto was important when it clearly shows us the moment he accepts both sides of his heritage. Something that's crucial to the movie. Another example would be his ENTIRE Logan review in Sibling Rivalry, if you can even call it that. It's not just that he missed something, but clearly doesnt pay enough attention to the movies he's watching. Unless he's emotionally attached or invested with a movie he clearly loves from his past, he doesnt feel the need to properly review something. He'll sing dr Seuss's praises, but not be able to follow the plot of Logan. The only reason I pick on this detail is because he's left himself open to harsh criticisms for making huge mistakes over and over and I'm just sick of it.

Doug is too young to have read these sequences in the comic books. For us older guys, the 'cheesy' scenes and dialog were very nostalgic. Something I would think he could relate too. :)
I legit love this incarnations uncle Ben and aunt may because they’re folks I want as my uncle and aunt. They just seemed so down to earth and understanding, and will just love the shit out of you even if they found out you were doing bad things, or now a super enhanced spider person. It’s also the case with Power Rangers, all of us who grew up with it are now trying to look at it through the lense of our older viewpoint of storytelling and trying to study the supposed mature themes and dramatic depth of these shows but we keep forgetting that they’re still first and foremost a show for little kids that we just have nostalgia for and so we shouldn’t really expect to see the kind of storytelling that aligns with the stuff we enjoy now in these shows

That dance used to be panned back when the movie was released. And we have Aldo Jones to thank for reintroducing him as Bully Maguire. That's literally the only reason he's more enjoyed now.

The fact that they brought J.K. Simmons back as Jonah in the MCU 17 years later shows just how epic a legacy he created with this movie.
It's like Hugh Jackman to Wolverine, or RDJ to Iron Man.
There's just some casting decisions where it's so perfect and on point, that even the producers know nobody else could fit the role. You don't see an actor portraying a comic book character, you see a comic character come to life.
Hell, didn't JK do the voice of Jameson in one of the cartoons as well?

That's actually one of the most faithful character adaptations from the comic books. Jameson has adamant journalist's integrity. He once fired Peter, someone who's worked for him for years and has always delivered only the best Spider-Man pics for the paper because he spliced some pics. Jameson looked at Peter as if Pete was dead to him. The guy hates Spider-Man's guts but he's a spectacular journalist
Even Dafoe said he had the most fun in this movie. Honestly, I love his portrayal as the Goblin BECAUSE it's so over the top and Hammed. He literally is a comic book villain. Perfect Jekyll and Hyde feel that the Goblin has in the comics. Seriously, alot of the Goblin at the time in the comics was goofy and warped whenever he's behind the mask, but Norman was cunning and slick. Honestly Dafoe was born to play this role. Better than someone who played a SECOND in a not so "Amazing" Spider-Man...
Green Goblin in this was a more entertaining and memorable villain than anything from MCU. Screw Thanos.

See, in the MCU Tony is dead, someone needs to step up and replace Stark Industries. Enter Norman and Harry Osbourne, father and son. With their business, Oscorp. Now that he is in the films, they can use Oscorp and eventually unveil the Goblin however they want.
The nostalgia is strong lmao. He was cool as kid back in the day, but now, its so cringe and I can't help but laugh at him instead of with him. Just because its over the top and fun doesn't mean its good. He's like venom and im willing to bet you didnt enjoy that nearly as much.
@@Sadvillainy Depends which venom. Topher Grace wasn't a good venom, but I sorta did like his design. It was interesting to see a venom who perfectly mimicked the Tobey Spidey suit. But the performance was subpar. Tom Hardy was a decent venom and his design was a definite improvement. The only thing I didn't like about Hardy's venom wasn't even Venom himself. It was Woody Harrelson as Carnage. I can't see him as Cassidy and oh God that wig was so bad. Personally I would've cast the actor who played as Rorschach in the Watchmen films or if they were okay with a younger Cassidy, Cameron Monaghan would do really well.
The only problem is his suit :/ I MEAN WHY?! They had an awesome and creepy AF animatronic mask READY for the movie...and someone said 'oh nononono! No! This will the scare the shit out of kids!' - but hey...THAT WAS THE INTENTION OF GOBLIN AND HOBGOBLIN IN THE FIRST PLACE! - THE FACE OF PURE FEAR! :(

Yep, corny, but sounds like it came right out of a comic book, which is exactly what Raimi was aiming for. This remains one of the most comic booky comic book movies to date.
I enjoyed that J.J.J. defended Parker and played ignorance. Regardless of the character's prejudices, he has journalistic integrity. Plus his hatred of both masks and criminals further shows why he's defiant to Goblin. In that scene, they deepen the character.

I was just thinking about that scene the other day and realized, "Holy crud, Jameson wasn't a total jerk after all!" As a kid I both hated him for disliking Spider-Man, a guy trying to help the city, but also liked how JK Simmons brought him to life (not to mention that he was one of the best things about Spider-Man 3).
Jameson defended Pete in the Spectacular Spider-Man series too when Rhino was wrecking the Bugle. He was using hand signals to tell Peter to run. Just shows that even tho JJ maybe a sourpuss, he's got a heart of gold.

I don't get how Critic would think Jj would give Peter up like that. Like Jj can be a jerk but I doubt he would put his employees in danger especially in the hands of a psychopath. Jerk doesn't always equal emotionless asshole
While Jameson is often a jerk, he also is consistently shown to possess a basic sense of integrity and morality. He would never willingly endanger another person's life, especially one of his own employees. Jameson has never been portrayed as someone who would do something like that -- not in the source material, and not in any adaptations.

Remember the episode where his son becomes a superhero after his dad prompts him when he gains powers, only to turn into a rampaging giant? That show made kids think... He's a journalist with an ethical duty to protect his sources. He constantly spins stories but he knows peter is just a kid and he doesn't want to endanger him. You have to consider Jonah is the head of a major media empire and it comes with the territory with him that he'd be a target. Kinda makes Jonah way more likable.

I liked the part where Green Goblin crashes through Aunt May's wall and tells her to finish the prayer because typically the villain says something edgy like "god can't save you now" instead we get Goblin taking pleasure in her praying to god for salvation because he takes delight in her suffering and helplessness the way an actual evil villain would
That scene where he looked down on her hovering with his staring yellow eyes was really haunting and perfectly shot.

The creation of green goblin terrified me as a kid. Didn't stop me from watching it 100s of times.
The end scene where Green Goblin beats the ever-loving shit out of Spider-Man at the end of the movie.
That part of the review actually annoyed me. Just because Spider-Man is cornier than most superhero movies doesn't mean it takes less risks. Hell, I can't recall the MCU being more PG13. MJs visible nipples alone would be a no-go.
I always assumed it was because of the upside down kiss and Mary Jane's high beams.

There are two things beneficial for adults in this movie: Willem Dafoe and JK Simmons. Every single time they're on screen is pure comedic gold.
I've to admit, while I love the MCU Spidey films and the "Amazing" films deserve some praise, the Raimi trilogy is just very unique that I haven't see other movies able to replicate it. It really feels like a comic book movie rather than the current superhero movies.
Only the second Amazing film deserves extended praise. The first one has like two good scenes.

So in a way, Spiderman has come full circle.

When you remember Doug's track record of having possible, short term memory loss and failure to put 2 and 2 together on things that even a casual child would notice on most of the films he's reviewed, it isn't surprising either.

Blood and deaths have been in multiple Disney movies that are rated PG, maybe the brutal beat down could be a bit intense for some young kids, but still. And yeah being impaled isn’t seen much in PG movies, but in Norman’s case it was honestly a pretty bloodless one, not helped by his “Oh” right before being impaled makes it a bit hard to take it seriously
And Green Goblin murdering people with bombs and machine guns
As cheesy as these movies can get, the earlier comics were JUST as cheesy. And that's the reason I love them, it's probably the most faithful adaptation of Stan Lee's writing style and tone.

J.K. Simmons is easily the best part of this whole movie. Toby Maguire's awkwardness and Willem Defoe's pure insanity are close seconds, but Simmons is the true meme. The difference is we're laughing WITH him, not at him.
I would not say it like that, i would say it like JK SImmons is the best part AS SIDE character in this movie, so he complements some cheese humor, and maybe some pacing issues(which honestly are not that of a problem). Also Director cut for second movie is amazingly fun, when he wears Spider-Man costume, its hilarious, also his jokes are the best parts of the movies. 😄😂

I do not care. Willem Dafoe is still amazing in this movie. Even after all of these years I remember him. He’s definitely one of the most memorable villains I’ve ever seen.
The dialog, camera shots, and everything else in these movies are meant to resemble a comic book, where as the more recent spiderman movies are meant to be more "movie" movie.

Why did he talk about the part when Green Goblin say “We’ll meet again Spider-Man!” That was the most comic book like moment in the movie. Same with the scene when Green Goblin and Spider-Man exchanged comebacks in the burning building.
Probably because Doug has admitted several times that he is not a comic book guy. He enjoys a lot of comic book movies but doesn't really know the lore or backstory on many of them and that shows in his reviews.

I don't know. That's pretty much every villain in cartoons who curses the protagonist after defeating him in a fight and promises that they shall meet again for the other day.
While I absolutely agree, I do find it annoying when they throw in comic book lines that don't land at all. Like Spidey calling him Gobbie, a nickname that totally feels undeserved (not to mention quite forced) in the movie, whilst in the comics it developed from a deep rivalry between the two.
Same goes for many comic book quips and one-liners like Wolverine saying 'Bub' in the movies. They are tossed in for nostalgia and to make the fans squee themselves but honestly most just fall flat.
So yeah it is for sure a comic book moment, but ultimately it was thrown in literally for that reason alone without any actual impact or emotion one would normally feel when reading in the comics.
I'm not saying fans won't appreciate and enjoy those moments but can't really expect everyone to have the same reaction, especially if they aren't superfans of the comics or other source material.

Being a 14 year old that grew up with these movies when I was younger, I really don't like it when people my age say that these films are terrible and MCU Spider-man is better. The Spider-man trilogy is a masterpiece, even with all it's flaws and dated moments. For me, not only was seeing my favourite comic book character come to life amazing. But the way we see Peter grow as a person and deal with the bad parts of life was too inspiring and relatable for me, and still is now. That's only a fraction of the reasons I, and many other people love these films.

@@virtualboy3596 The MCU Spider-man movies are good, and I'm not gonna try and say they are not. However, my personal issue with those movies is that Peter Parker doesn't really feel like Spider-man. Spider-man isn't meant to have a rich sugar daddy (Tony Stark) who gives him an awesome suit with all those gadgets. Also, Tony Stark has basically replaced Uncle Ben in the MCU, which is something I'm not a massive fan of. Also, the lack of consequences that Peter has to face in the new movies is also something I don't like, he always seems to get away with all of his problems; he leaves Liz at the homecoming dance, he destroys that man's shop (in homecoming), aunt May finds out Peter is Spider-man and...everything is fine. There's no consequences.

I remember when Critic though TASM was so much better than the Raimi trilogy. The Amazing Spider Man films are either ostracized or simply forgotten about while the Raimi films are (at least the first two) are seen as nostalgic fun and all of them perfect meme material these days.

@@danielscott5673 I got bad news for you, THOSE and the praying in church for vengeance scenes by both Eddie and Peter are things the symbiote made them both do as it's hosts in stan lee's original spider man comic. Peter parker under the Venom Symbiote's influence would of course be a little awkward while Eddie as it's host would be more menacing, as Eddie was always a by any means sleaze ball whereas Peter typically gives no thought to open aggression/vented anger.

The 1st Raimi Spider-Man is how I got introduced to the character, I even went to the premiere. I can always sit down and watch this film whenever it's on.

I loved these films when I was kid. Sure, when talking about the first film, SOME aspects didn’t age too well. But, as an adult, I adore how fun and cheesy it can be. It didn’t take itself TOO seriously and I think that was the point.

I was thinking the exact same thing. I've not seen any attacks against these films apart from the usual digs at Spider-Man 3. There is still so much goodwill towards these films that Sony added the Raimi version of the spider-suit to the recent PS4 Spider-Man game as part of a patch update.

These were 2000s movies, a time where CGI was still an evolving tech alongside treating the original content with as much respect as possible. It's a love hate series for everyone, but for me these three spiderman movies were the building blocks of spider man movies later on

My favorite versions of Jameson are this one, and the one from the Ultimate comics. The guy had a good reason to not like Spider-Man in those comics, and he did stand up for both Peter and Spidey when the times came.
This movie matches the tone of the 60's comics that Spider-Man started in.

Yeah. And Andrew Garfield is more like the Ultimate Spider-Man portrayal. I've seen the first few issues of Ultimate Spider-Man, and it's kind of similar to the beginning of The Amazing Spider-Man. And Peter having a scientist for a father was also in the Ultimate comic, but they still kept Uncle Ben as Peter's main parental figure while Amazing Spider-Man made Peter's father be his role model.

24:24 Jonah likes Parker, why wouldn’t he? He’s the only photographer in the city who can get pictures of Spiderman. Only the daily bugle has pictures of Spiderman because of Parker. And it’s meant to humanize him, show that he has some shred of kindness left in him, at least enough to not knowingly put another mans life in danger.

He's also never shown to be a true badguy. He's always had a sense of morality and integrity. Take Spiderman PS4, he does admit when Spiderman does good, but in his perspective it always seems like more bad happens when Spiderman is around then when he's not, and he's mostly correct. I've also never really thought of him as being anti-spiderman, more pro-regulated spiderman

Look at it through Jonah’s eyes when a kid who looks like a harmless pussy brings you a bunch of pics of a muscular dude doing the most extreme shit off of skyscrapers your not going to think it’s Parker unless it’s momentary and you laugh it off.
Jonah’s questions his source for a second then brushes it off because he’s the head of a fast paced a competitive newspaper and decided he doesn’t want to know. Spider-Man’s one of the only Superhero’s with a secret identity that’s believable.
The idea of the Sam Raimi Spider-Man movies being silly, cheesy and goofy were the point. Not only is it Sam Raimi's style, but Spider-Man comics themselves were over the top silly and goofy. That's why it was a perfect match, Sam Raimi working on Spider-Man films. They fit his style because the source material itself is silly and cheesy.
Sidious the 3rd one was flawed but compared to both Amazing Spider-Mans and That Venom movie they deserve recognition.

Sigh. 9/11. But to be honest, I think a lot of us at the time were happy to see New Yorkers uniting with each other. It was a tumultuous time of grief and confusion, so it honestly did help us get over our issues. I know it's campy now, but if you were aware of what had happened on 9/11 regarding American society, it makes sense and was a bit cathartic.

Doug has made far greater mistakes too consistently about missing the point or the importance of moments in the movies he reviews. Example: not understanding why the white wolf appearing to balto was important when it clearly shows us the moment he accepts both sides of his heritage. Something that's crucial to the movie. Another example would be his ENTIRE Logan review in Sibling Rivalry, if you can even call it that. It's not just that he missed something, but clearly doesnt pay enough attention to the movies he's watching. Unless he's emotionally attached or invested with a movie he clearly loves from his past, he doesnt feel the need to properly review something. He'll sing dr Seuss's praises, but not be able to follow the plot of Logan. The only reason I pick on this detail is because he's left himself open to harsh criticisms for making huge mistakes over and over and I'm just sick of it.

To be fair in the comics there's a scene that would have worked beautifully in this movie but I don't know when the comic scene was made.
One of Jonah's underlings is criticising Peters pictures after Peter leaves and asking Jonah why he's paying for such unprofessional shots and the comic cuts to Jonah looking at an article of Uncle Ben's death with him saying "the kid just needs some help"

It’s also the case with Power Rangers, all of us who grew up with it are now trying to look at it through the lense of our older viewpoint of storytelling and trying to study the supposed mature themes and dramatic depth of these shows but we keep forgetting that they’re still first and foremost a show for little kids that we just have nostalgia for and so we shouldn’t really expect to see the kind of storytelling that aligns with the stuff we enjoy now in these shows

His carrer would be over from day to night. It's not just a employee thing, even he got the info from some random guy on the street, he still can't spit the beans and tell his sources. Enemies can harm him or other journalists will contact him. And if you agreed to keep your source anonymous, you keep them anonymous until the end, that's the deal. That's why many high rank journalists trade information on deep web chats, where it can't be traced.

That's exactly what he wants. He wants to hear the reason why Jameson would protect Parker's identity from the movie.

I love the Sam Raimi spider man trilogy. The second movie is still my favorite spider man movie even with how great spider verse was.

I know its, funny enough, "Pure Nostalgia" but this is honestly my 2nd favorite Spider-man after Spiderverse lol Pure Nostalgic Bias but this film just takes me back to great times, I saw it in theaters 6 times when I was 11 years old cause I begged my parents to, I had all the action figures to it, the PS2 game, and it honestly just makes me happy everytime I watch it xD I can see and acknowledge all of its faults but I still love it none the less, Also that Spidey Suit is GOAT AF
