Yup! Phil 2:58 3:02 Lesh got me here! My wife and I have season tickets to the NJ Symphony, but I've never heard this piece. Thank you for a real good time. RIP
Excellent performance of my favourite Brahms symphony. Strange to see the orchestra playing in this empty concert venue during the pandemic, but so glad they did.
Well, the main theme of the finale of the First Symphony is also reminiscent of the main theme of the finale of Beethoven's Ninth, and when this resemblance was pointed out to Brahms he replied that any dunce could see that! In 1876, when the work was premiered in Vienna, it was immediately hailed as "Beethoven's Tenth"!
One must learn to listen actively. It's an a acquired taste. We get to listen to hours and hours of it. Taste's a wonderful thing. They didn't have radio nor recording. If you missed it, you missed it. Better luck next year.
@@peterl.curtis3959 Brahms idolized Beethoven even though he was born after Beethoven died. He knew he had big shoes to follow. It took two decades for him to write his first symphony and I'm sure he was inspired by the master of the symphony, Beethoven.
@@jerrera45it is said that brahms used the timpani in the beginning to represent beethoven’s footsteps behind him, because he felt so much pressure to write this symphony
Once again, the great Phil Lesh is expanding my musical understanding and appreciation. Man, I'm gonna miss him.

Thank you for the enlightenment Phil, rest easy.
I read Brahmas said it took him 20 years to write his 1st symphony. He felt like Beethoven was looking over his shoulder
phrasing so intelligent the rhythm never static it's an ultimate version

Like in symphony 2 the andante the life of the divine composer is encompassing
Wow, thank you very much.
Bravi tutti
I agree, the second movement is beautiful
32:54 Best Part ♥️
20:17 solo
Awesome
The brief almost Classical opening moment at 2:55-3:05 is so much better than the rest of the piece it sounds out of place.
que maravilla
one of the highest version i know
The second movement is one of his best, should be played as a separate piece, like Mahler's adagietto and Barber's adagio for strings.
I also love the soulful Barber's adagio and the tender, romantic Mahler's adagietto. My favorite movement of Brahms' 1st Symphony is the 1st movement.
The end of the 2nd movement and the horn near the beginning of the fourth movement brings tears to my eyes.
❤
Phil sent me
Me too!

Who is the concertmaster?
Boris Garlitsky. amazing violinist.
His solo in the second movement coda is the best I've ever heard. It is stunningly beautiful.
Schitterend
Dont mess with beethoven not until you are ready.
What's Beethoven got to do with Brahms????
That is why Brahms waited so long to write his first symphony, and boy was he ready.
