  • We never thought we would find a natural sandstone bridge in Illinois, but we did. A relatively short walk and we discovered this incredible sight!
It was only a mere 0.3 mile roundtrip but downhill to it and, you guessed it, uphill on the way back! The cool thing is that you get to walk across the bridge to get down below it--not allowed in most places on the Southwest's natural bridges!
We then headed to our camp several miles further south-almost to the southern tip of Illinois-Horseshoe Lake. If you Google it, you may not find the right one as there is another Horseshoe Lake in an Illinois State Park across the river from St Louis. This one is just above Cairo, Illinois.
What a fantastic place as you would guess you were in Louisiana if you were just dropped there. I also saw what was an unusual phenomenon there that I had never witnessed before--watch to the end and you'll see it--amazing!
We camped on the west side of the lake, where the shower rooms were. We actually really like the East side camp area a bit better, however, there are no showers and only outhouses (actual outhouses!). We were in great need of showers with the heat and humidity of the last several days!
Amazing thins to do in Illinois!
