  • What has been happening with the Touden Party in the meantime? Well, hay-fever, a cockatrice, and all-out chaos. The usual. Senshi gives Chilchuck an adult conversation. Laios learns MAGIC?! Marcille gets rocked.

There was a panel in the manga that didn't get into the final cut, it mentioned Falin’s magic relies on her intuition.
Gnome system can be really powerful with little mana cost, but it heavily depends on your connection with spirits, it’s organic, flexible, and can be hard to control.
Elven magic, on the other hand, does things methodically, they use more spells to direct mana, spirits are resources to be used with no extra emotion, and it's overall safer for the mages.
Fallin tried to teach Laios before but her system is way too freestyle for him to comprehend lol

I think the reason Falin learned Gnomish magic was because the teacher we saw at the school they went to was a old gnome. At least thats my theory.

From what I remember from the author's side manga(?),
Gnomish magic request, ask the elements to use magic
While elvish magic order, force the elements to use magic
Due to these reasons, Gnomish magic was said to be less burdensome to the caster

It would make sense because I believe Marcille said she was already a graduate when they met, so maybe she didn't learn from this professor. Or maybe I misunderstood the timeline.

@@jaehayu2119yeah, it's generally easier to learn for tall-men for this reason, and I would especially for Falin, since she does a lot of things going by her gut and she seems like a person who would rather coexist with spirits than enslave them.
On a more general RPG note, gnomish magic leans more towards the cleric/druid type of magic while elven magic leans more towards wizard magic, as far as specializations go.

The other reason is elf guard their magic tightly. It's not easily accessible.

I love the age thing because if memory serves Laios is the youngest member of the party besides Falin, yet Senshi's concerned with the others because they're "young'uns."

devastated that the dub did not keep that one instance of laios calling chilchuck 'chil' cause it's so sweet. extra manga stuff mentions that half-foots only let people very close to them call them by their first name (aka the first part of their name)

Chilchuck's father simply died of old age, Senshi thinks he died too early and couldn't give his son advice haha. The reason why Chilchuck is a bit of a coward is because he is very cautious, since his job is to keep all the members of his group alive because he is in charge of the traps, too much pressure for our little hobbit 🧜‍♂️

Chilchuck mentioned that he saw his dad when he was being frozen by the ghosts in episode 5.
It's funny that Senshi thinks Chilchuck and Marcille are still young, but is unsure of Laios's age.

Back at episode 9, Tansu said "Even the corpse we stumbled upon a bit back had revival fee"
So Kabru was actually very close to Laois back at ep 9
My theory is that the secret Orc passage (episode 10) cut them off a few days of walking (~5 days difference)

    19:58 I think it's a reference
Who are the most famous halflings in media? Which ones can you think of that meddled with a dark magic artifact and then left on a boat with elves never to be seen again?

    • @ambarthes
      @ambarthes 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

xD I didn't catch that while reading the manga! I don't know if it was a fully purposeful reference (elves do have a reputation for policing Ancient Magic in the comic) but there's also a pretty clear Monty Python reference later on so I'm choosing to believe it was intentional!

It was only explained in a bonus comic, but yeah, gnome magic should be easier for a tall-man.
That comic revealed that every race has a different mana tolerance threshold, with elves being the highest and gnomes being the second highest IIRC and tall-men in third (coincidentally, dwarves are dead last). So gnome school would likely be less mana intensive and thus less straining for a tall-man like Falin.

It seems Laios has the same abilities as Farlin in the direction of spirit magic, the fact that he used mana most likely activated the sleeping ability.

Excited you're reading the manga too! The adaptation is great but there's a surprising amount of world building/fun monster facts in the supplemental material that we don't seem to be getting. I'd highly recommend the Adventurers' Bibles too! Especially if you want to know more about Kabru's squad (the anime should still cover the MAIN reason why he's Like That though so it's not paywalled, just gone into in more detail).

Love how mentally, chilchuck and senshi are BOTH 56. Theyre literally both mentally at the same point in their lives but senshi gave chil the birds and the bees talk even though CHIL is the one whos fathered multiple adult chileren

Also chillchuck was referencing actual stuff that Elves did to his race. Because they're very short lived (only 50 years), some Elves see them as expendable, and they used them as mana taps until their life force ran out. Marcille commenting about him learning magic was kind of unintentionally racist cause of that background, frankly he was being NICE with that sass. It's the equivalent of a black person in America asking for job ideas and a white person suggesting to work the cotton fields.
To be fair to Marcie tho, literally everyone in the party has prejudice and bias. Senshi actually is really anti elf, it's why he was not as warm to Marcie as he could've been early on. In the shapeshifter episode, his version of Marcille is essentially a racist caricature cause he's struggling to let go of what he was taught about Elves.
It's a really fascinating and wonderful manga tbh, all of them have biases they subtly unlearn throughout the series and it's a subtle message about how people are always raised with prejudice, and it doesn't make them evil or bad so long as they're trying to unlearn it and become better.

3:13 Quick note here that will only come up a bit later and it's only fully explained in the Adventurer's Bible book, but it's only relevant to the world building and no spoiler. She's an ogre (and the word people from the part of the world Shuro is from really is "oni") and oni are grouped up as "humans" together with tall-men, elves, dwarves, gnomes and half-foot. Despite their different physical traits, talents and life spans, they all share the same general build and they have the same number of bones. Beast people like kobolds and orcs on the other hand aren't humans (including all the implications that brings).
From a writing point of view, I think that the author made this distinction because of how loaded our language is with the term "human". "For all of humanity, inhuman, human history" and such makes sense in our human only world, but it sounds awkward in a world where other sentient races have coexisted since the beginning of time. Doubly so in japanese, when all other races would be foreign terms while human would be ningen.
It's things like this that put DM so far above other fantasy stories.

14:19 because she learnt it from a gnome dominated academy? Also why is it a bad idea exactly? A fighter that can heal and buff, it's a freaking paladin! It's not like Marcille's gonna teach him the dark arts

That wasn't a traditional dragon. That was a Wyvern.
The difference is wyverns have legs and wing arms like a bat, European dragons have 4 legs and can have wings but don't always
