I also love that Marcille just casually eats a Mandrake head, when at the start of the series she was horrified and disgusted when Senshi offered her one.
The slow burn character development is great on everyone. Can see how Senshi now even lets a non-magic user test magic on him. Or how Marcille went from being freaked out around Laios to praising him and teaching him. Or Chilchuck admititng he cared about everyone a couple episodes ago. It's all so heartwarming.
@@lightningjadejavier lots of series have different pacing when it comes to character development. I’ve heard ppl say this one is “too slow” cuz it’s a slow burn. As someone who’s a fan of slow burn, most series tend to feel too fast in order to retain audience attention.
I didn't expect to enjoy this show so much but it's one of my favorite anime in recent memory. Trigger's style brings out so much personality and charm. Fantasy fans have been eating good with this and Frieren.
A basilisk and a cockatrice look the same but they are different mythical creatures. One is born from a bird's egg hatched by a snake. The other one is hatched from a snake egg hatched by a bird. That's pretty much the only difference. Sometimes you will see a basilisk portrayed as just a serpent of some sort, The one I was most familiar with is the one they had here. This was a fun episode.
A lot of people have it in their heads that a basilisk should be just a snake and that's mostly the Harry Potter movies to blame (the 2nd one iirc) because of course HP is one of the most popular magic franchises in the world.
Omg I didn’t notice until I saw your comment! I went back to check, and you’re right! Her eyes are now asymmetrically drawn and one has thinner lines than the other! Love that they kept that consistency, and I wonder whether it carries on for the following episodes.
Senshi the Confirmed Bachelor in his EDIT (thank you) thirties-forties (in dwarf years) lecturing Chilchuck the fifty-something (in halfling years) divorcee father of three about the birds and the bees will never not be funny to me
What’s funnier is that Chilchuck is so determined to keep his personal life and work life separate that he doesn’t just say “my dude, I already have kids”
@@kairosvt3000 actually I think you're right, 60 is a suspiciously low average age for humans if not for them mostly having the bad lands and jobs. Maybe it's late, but ... I peeked at the more recent chapters and found that Senshi is 112. I also found that half-ling's age of maturity is 14 and dwarf's age of maturity is 40, while tall-men's age of maturity is 16. I don't know if tallmen have the same growth rate as human, but I don't think we have to compare it with our world. If we assume all the creatures have growth rate depend on their age of maturity, we can roughly calculate that Chilchuck is 33-34 in half-ling years, and Senshi is nearly 45 in dwarf years.
Good God... those Dryad fruits were really disturbing. Those faces were so cursed! I wonder how weird it would be getting "the talk" as a middle aged man- though I do understand why dwarves have trouble determining with other races' ages due to their own relatively long lifespans so I can understand Senshi's assumption as well as Chilchucks' chagrin. Maybe I should have posted this last episode, but here's a fun fact from the novelization: The leader of the corpse retriever group that Kabru killed was a half-dwarf and the blonde one was a half-gnome.
27:00 - As a small reminder, Marcille didn't actually kill a dog for that method, she just knows about that method but never carried through on it because she felt sorry for the dog.
I really missed the joke from the manga that got cut from that second episode, where when they asked her if she'd ever tried it, she thought to herself that she didn't because she felt sorry for the dog, but then lied to them and said that she did so that they'd respect her- and Chilchuck's disgusted "Really? @@AnimeCritical so I looked up the chapter, its chapter 56, at the end chilchuck talks about his kids being grown adults and “Independent” and that his wife is living at their daughters house, but not that his daughters are married. Maybe the translation of the manga you read translated them as married? But they’re not (considering side material where his daughters are looking for husbands, +the epilogue comic, +the dungeon meshi wiki not listing them as having spouses)
This was a very good episode. I'm glad their still keeping with the original vibe of the manga. I do wish for some OVA's going into the finer details of the world though.
Don't think this will ever be touched on in the anime but when they first met Senshi thought Laios and Marcille hired a child slave (Chilchuck) to be their picklock.
I don't think Trigger had an issue with that tbh (also they were shown kissing here). There was actually a lot of little bits that I hoped got shown but they clearly had time constraints. They can only fit so much into an episode before they throw the pacing off after all. Like I'd hoped they showed the bit of how Falin tries to teach Laios magic (which was very brief) but obviously it became something they had to cut to avoid going over the run-time.
He definitely *looks* like a Paladin, but I think he's more of a Ranger - he specializes in hunting monsters and has a few incidental support spells, but magic isn't really part of his combat style the way a Paladin's auras and smites are.
The plant-like nature spirits from the _Elder Scrolls_ series that you tried to remember are called Spriggans. This entire episode was sort of a contrasting echo of the first two episodes, full of callbacks and parallels: the basilisk and the cockatrice, harvesting fruit from dangerous plants, and learning about their role in the ecology, harvesting mandrakes and referencing the official, book-mandated method of sacrificing a dog. Then there's Marcille's progress from absolutely refusing the mandrake heads, back then, to being able to chow down now. But the _"Jojo's_ reference fruit" with their crazy faces were the best!
Honestly what was amazing to me was how funny this episode still was despite cutting some corners from the manga, like how when Laios was thanking Marcille for explaining magic easier, he'd also mention that Falin was an awful teacher because she just did everything based on "feeling". This episode was technically the "weakest" adaptation so far imo, but it goes to show how well Trigger's doing with the source material to still produce such an amazing show.
