Tsmc company does not happen overnight...it takes years to develop and the right people and workers to make it happen ...you cant set up a company with workers thats not 100 ,%committed to work ...tsmc have technicians thats ready to work 2am if theres a problem with the machine while in the west they will have to wait till 7am ..
It also takes companies who are willing to toss their engineers and manufacturing in the trash heap in order to save $$$.

That is why TSMC of Arizona, USA was at a lost from day one. Multi-Billions lost in TSMC and a plus for China for do you think China was sleeping for the last 20 years in the R&D of micro chips. For China it was cheaper, faster for TSMC to produce USA, European design chips to apply to Worldwide Products aka cars, tv, phone and etc... It was a win-win for all, European, US and Asia over all. Like the US Wolf Amend Act of 2011, China from an horizontal manufacture is now willing to vertical in the Chip industry thanks to US Joe.

I love the footage from old ABC documentaries on microchips used in this video. They were so interesting and information dense, and the narrator always had a commanding voice. I really wish that style of documentary was still made. Takes me back to primary school with all us kids sitting on the floor watching a documentary on the planets, physics or computers.

To a degree - 5nm tech was researched and is owned by ASML in Netherlands, and now supplies TSMC with the equipment to make chips in 5nm, and it’s their choice to keep their equipment out of China (for obvious reasons) that was the true instigator to China wanting to invade Taiwan, and is the reason the US will defend it, and why a plan B TSMC plant is already being built already on US soil - the real question is what happens when it’s built.. will the US still defend Taiwan? Will ASML pull its equipment from Taiwan?

Very interesting video thanks for putting it together. I think the idea is for the US and the EU via Germany to take over the production of Micro Chips in the case of an attempted invasion of Taiwan. Of course, We (Australia) could probably have become a leader in the field as well but we'd rather just dig holes.

weird how capital is allocated. TSMC scale requires investing billions with full risk for decades hoping for a return on investment, compared to digging holes woth instant gratification. It's worthwhile noting that the top chip _making_ machines are made/assembled by ASML in the Netherlands (coincidentally), and then shipped to Taiwan.
Other major companies like Crucial have bought their own EUV lithographic machine from ASML. These machines are worth about $300,000,000 each with the next version probably worth a half a billion dollars.
ASML like TSMC and Samsung, since 2022 have taken a hit in the multi-billions $$$ and lost of a major buyer. And will continue to the near future for they Nation prefer to be a lapdog then an enterprise for mankind. Like the "Nutmeg", another supplier were found.
In refer to China invading Taiwan over TSMC, ask one question, why would you if you're already getting a great product, fast and cheap. Like the US Wolf Amendment act 2011, China had over come that issue aka Tiangong space station.

Great point, ASML are the designers and builders of the cutting edge tech. If China stole Taiwan which would mean the Gov would take over TSMC, it would take years for China to reverse engineer the 5nm machines, all while ASML have halted sale of new tech to them. ASML would stay in business because there is a massive over demand for there machines

(Back when AMD announced Zen they had only a couple of CPUs that worked at room temperature! Fair dinkum, they bet the company on it.) TSMC dominates in Advance chip production, the issue is because cost and scale. TSMC can beat its competitors in both and put many of them out of business. Its not the case China or US doesn't have the capability to produce these chips but just can't do it at price and speed TSMC can. Current Chip war may not be a bad thing at least for China, as it forces its domestic companies to buy more expensive Chinese made chips hence growing its own industry. It basically spell the end of monopoly by the likes of ASML and TSMC. I think that will be a good thing for the market.
Since 2021, this USA action making TSMC, AMSL and Samsung lapdogs to the USA has just start China chip industry again. Thanks to Joe Biden and the US American 2020 voters. God bless USA.
The chinese just learned how to make ball point pens in the last decade. I highly doubt they have the expertise to do what was described in this video. Intel can barely do it. I'm pretty sure they're a little more qualified than some random stolen chinese ip factory

If China were to take over the Taiwanese factories, I don't think asml would continue to service their machines or sell them in a new one. It wouldn't last long
They probably won't take over factories per se, as they want the company to continue operations. It would porbably be like the country was under new management, but a war would mean total blockades of the supply chain anyway

everyone overlooks the fact that the US companies were looking for synergy. This happened both of TSMC and ASML. If Taiwan is going to be constantly under threat that induces additional risk equation. Unfortunately, this is not good news for Taiwan.

pretty old news lol i had an argument with a bloke at work about this not long ago, was trying to tell me i was full of it lol goes to show how much people actually know about whats going on in the world.
Well it’s strange that it’s taken so long for the ramifications of this tech to be in normal news (even though it’s missed A LOT of important info). I was talking about this around 5 years ago and told everyone I knew to buy shares in ASML and tsmc haha, a couple did, the rest wish they had..

It is very improbable the TMSC wouldn't be destroyed during fights. Just look on Ukraine. And while western countries would suffer massive shortages of microchips, it is nothing when compared the shortages China would experience.
You seem to be missing a vital aspect of TSMC's operation.
The machine (and the technology) that makes the highest tech chips they make is not theirs, it is made and manufactured by ASML and Philips, Philips separated their lithographic business from the parent company into a partnership with ASML, (don't know if Philips is still a partner).
These machines are made in the Netherlands and TSMC is totally dependant on them (at least for the highest tech chips). These machines take over a year to make with a price tag of $20 million plus.
So ASML is the real power as they own the patents/technology and make the machines, DUV (Deep UltraViolet lithography), that TSMC uses. This technology is restricted from China so if they do invade Taiwan this plant would definitely be destroyed and a new facility built somewhere else. So a temporary halt to some chips but within 2/3 years they would have a new facility working, I think a new plant like TSMC's is being built in Arizona, so maybe no temporary halt at all.
These machines are indeed manufactured in the Netherlands, but where do the chips inside the machines come from? They come from Taiwan. Without these chips, the machines cannot function.

I think the other chip manufacturers only have access to DUV tech, what you can make with EUV is smaller and more powerful and the highest tech you can get at the moment, who knows what is around the corner, nano scale 3D printing?. @@whiteghost4431

Little fact: the first batch of Han-Chinese immigrants were imported/traffic-ted as field labors to Taiwan by Dutch back in 16th century. And some 400 years later TSMC bought many semiconductor IPs from Philips. We are deeply related.

TSMC instead of increasing the costs of chips could do the opposite, sell them at such a low cost that nobody else can compete, leading to no desire to build factories elsewhere since they would not be competitive.
So the argument for that point could go both ways.
The risk is that there is no viable second source, regardless of differentiated costs.
Once upon a time, Intel licensed their x86 architecture to AMD because they were concerned the US Government might go after them for anti-trust, as a result they partnered specifically to create a second source of their product. Today, we have AMD as a second source using a version of the x86, where their competition leads to improvements over time.
As important as TSMC is, and good on them for doing what the American companies showed no interest in doing in the states (corporate greed being one of the biggest limiters in actual advancement...especially here in the states).
However they should not be a single source of said technologies.

Not the “best” but dammed good at the right price. TI was the cutting edge at the time. Microchips aren’t difficult to make, they only require infinite patience and skill.
They're difficult enough to make that China is struggling and they're way more difficult to make on an industrial scale

I'm not sure if I agree with you@@anthonyburke5656 . I actually looked into it fairly recently and I believe the US put out a paper on the feasibility of creating a country-specific at scale chip business and they put the cost at $1 trillion USD. That explains why the whole process has been internationalised - from Europe to Japan to USA to Taiwan. Each country responsible for particular components and those costs. It's a fairly lovely example of actual positive globalisation.

This should be a joint effort with Taiwan and the US making a new factory in the US with a relocation incentive to top micro chip expert and managing directors to form a co alliance for the future of the processing of micro Chips made in the US. Working hand in hand to develop a new factory. Where TSMC would retain most of the profits from the venture hiring Americans to do the medial work in such a factory.
By doing this we have resolved two problems with this crisis. First being the idea that china could invade taking over the Chip factory. If this was ever a sure threat the idea would to deconstruct the entire factory, or (just blow it up) before falling into the hands of China. Secondly it would help grow a much needed micro chip industry helping to increase production. As Americans this would further bond the Tawnies to America. (There is strength in numbers.)
How have one been sleeping in the last three years. Have you not read the interesting stories of TSMC invited by Joe Biden to Arizona, USA. AMSL asking what happen to the German Purchase Orders and Samsung demanding USA keep it's promise to purchase all outstanding "Chips" that China had cancel because of the US Sanction of 2021.

ASML (Denmark) build the machines that manufacture the 5um chip. Samsung and TSMC are the only companies that currently have this tech. Manufacture is for Machines is slow and ASM is the bottle neck of the high end chip shortage. Biden has got US companies next in line to secure Chip manufacturing machines from ASM, Micron and others. But, Yes right now and for the next 24months until the next machine tools up, TSMC & Samsung is it.

@@Kneedragon1962 Incorrect again. Multiple companies has DUV (Deep Ultraviolet Lithography) equipment (Nikon, Canon...etc.) ASML is the only provider for EUV (Extreme Ultraviolet Lithography) equipment in the world.

China does not want Taiwan for its chips, period. Even if TSMC voluntarily set up shop in China, it would still need to import the precursor materials and necessary reagents from Korea and Japan, and lithography from the Netherlands. All are staunch US allies.
Getting Taiwan will not help China to monopolize chip production. Chinese longing for Taiwan has always been political, to win the civil war for good.

The CCP can just walk in and take over the factories like French battleships. Even Morris Chang said the CCP will get nothing. Like the Swiss, I am sure the Taiwanist had pre positioned explosives at all the critical machines, machines so precise a single 12 gauge can take them off line for months. Even if a couple were captured intact, they require the cooperation of the technical staff to run them. China would cut themselves off the most advanced chips. Good luck getting parts and service from ASML.
Just a question. Why can't other countries manufacturer of micro chips? Is it not better for countries to develop their own chips rather than having to depend upon someone else to make these. I feel that to take control of such technology within one's own country is vitality important, especially today because of the volatile situation we find ourselves in. To have your own manufacturer of such chips, we couldn't be held to ransom in case of a war situation like what's happening in Ukraine at this moment in time. If Taiwan is taken over by China, then imagine the situation the world could find themselves in if that happened. There are countries that could build and manufacture such items. Instead of private companies being relied upon, the government could make such a company a national one run by the country.
It takes a decade just to build the factory plus plenty of billions. Not only that, but who's to say you'll be able to do it how they do. Imagine pumping billions of dollars into something and waiting a decade only to find out your process sucks. It'd be like a brand new car company trying to compete with rolls royce quality, doesn't sound promising.
They can, just not as cheaply. We have factories underway here in the states and a few other places around the world. A few are scheduled to be up and running within the next two years. We will be able to maintain supply but costs overall will go up unless they figure out a way to bring production costs down.

Even though China takes over Taiwan, TSMC would be useless to them if Dutch did not sell them the machines and Japan sell chemcials for making chips . Then, if US blew off TSMC, the world would be in terrible short supply of chips that could be not be produced in years to come. It takes a long long time to build a foundry. Think of the chip shortage during Covid 19. The consequences would be even more catastrophic if TSMC is blown off and no other foundries could replace it in a long time to come.
You missed a major part of the whole dilemma. (The public deserve better out of the ABC than half the story)
If China were to invade and take control of microchip manufacturing they would still need the world leading design of microchips that comes out of Silicon Valley in the USA.
This is why it is a stalemate. So until China can design the best microchips themselves (which they are a very long way off) they can’t invade. And to complicate things more for China the USA have enough production facilities in America to supply their military with microchips in the advent of war however losing Taiwan and China restricting the flow of microchips would lead to a financial crisis which the USA doesn’t want and possibly couldn’t handle.
Hence the stalemate I mentioned earlier.
Next time give the public the whole story.
Since 2015, China had it's own R&D on Chips and now with additional 2,000 plus Chinese American from the silicon valley, GTE, MIT, State of Texas and etc... has return to China after the Chinese Exclusion Act of 2021 by Joe Biden.

Also note without USA, the issue of Taiwan island would be of no issue for USA, PRC need the return of the island of Taiwan, not the 24 millions for they already have 1.4 billions. You give the USA of today too much credit. Americans literally have to move to other countries to get affordable health care and here we are thinking we can compete with manufacturing cutting edge semiconductors. Just not in tune with reality.

Whilst TSMC are in the process of building foundries in European countries, the US, and other select countries [honestly, they should also build one in Oz but they wouldn't get a tax break.].
Once those foundries have been built the Taiwan foundry wont matter.
At the heart of TSMC foundry is the ASML [Netherlands] lithography imager. That's the core technology they want.
TSMC foundries set 2024-2027 for completion.
Products made in Taiwan's TSMC are always the most advanced chips, and products made in other countries are always old-generation products, and 900,000 chips are produced in Taiwan, and only 20,000 chips are expected to be produced in the US's TSMC, which means the proportion is not high in other countries. so your statement is wrong

@@ThexBorgBuilding a semiconductor fab is not a one and done kind of thing. It needs constant tooling and retooling. Then after a few years when the chips are outdated, a new fab is needed to manufacturer the new chips. It costs tens of billions of dollars a year to keep up and that is why only TSMC is capable of staying afloat in this cutting edge market. All others, including the American global foundry have fallen to the wayside and have instead opted to manufacturer legacy chips. So no, one factory in Arizona is far from accomplishing what many Americans think is self sufficiency in semiconductors.

The NEW global foundries that TSMC are build are NEW so they will support the current chip technology, including ASML.

The foundry TSMC is building in Japan started a year after Arizona and is set to finish before. America will never be able to keep up with the pace that is needed in this industry.

The nutmeg analogy is not correct. With or without Taiwan's microchip manufacturing, mainland China is determine to take back Taiwan. The Chinese consider Taiwan as a part of its national territory recognized by global community, even the United States of America. Taiwan present status is a result of the Chinese civil war that has not formally ended. Taiwan was never a country definable by any definition in the world though it still carry its international defuncted name "Republic of China".
Take back? ! PRC never owns Taiwan, and in fact not even ROC. When Republic of China was established in 1912, Taiwan was stilled part of Japan. Let alone the establishment of PRC in 1949. By the way, to be exact, Chinese communities party is the rebellion group who went on riot to seize the power of ROC. In reality PRC is only a group of rebels.

My European ancestors did a good job back then. I'm glad, and I'm proud of our glorious history. Nice "colonialism" insert, which doesn't make very much sense. Back then they didn't risk the destruction of the industry they wanted to control, or they at least weren't aware of that. If China would try to conquer Taiwan, even if they would succeed, it's very likely that the chip industry would be destroyed for some reason or another.
But at least the history of TSMC was interesting.
You missed the bit about China being a third-world country, being 30 years behind in technology and not even having sufficient scientific knowledge to create a viable Covid-19 vaccine. Even if they captured Tiawan and TSMC they have no idea how to create an advanced semiconductor.....

Chinas economy was acually destroyed by 2 opium wars fought and won by the British, to allow the poms to sell opium in exchange for chinese tea. Hongkong was one of the spoils of victory for the poms. The chinese do not forget.

lol. china have 28nm production facility. it's similar to 7nm, just bigger. yes, it's 2 generations behind TSMC. but if you search "microchip export by country", china is the 2nd taiwan is the 3rd.

Transistors aren't switches, they're amplifiers. Yes, I'm a pedantic geek, and I'm tired of hearing that same silly statement. A switch won't do much good in a microphone amplifier (actually, a pre-emp, but anyway) unless you want to just turn it on and off and nothing else.

Eg, if the input current on the base of a transistor does from 0 to enough to fully saturate the collector emmittor output current, ie full clipping, then yes, it has amplified the 0-1 input logig, to a greater current 0-1 output current, so, amplifies the input q to a large output 1, in much the same way a relay does, or, drives a switch. Either is true. A remote controlled switch or relay is an ampifier.

first time I learn about transistor, it's is switch, to decide where the process should continue, also there are AND, OR, NAND, NOR gates created by transistors.
It is not the best analogy comparing TSMC to nutmeg. Unlike a natural resource, high-end chip production is a multinational collaboration effort. TSMC needs lithography machine available only from ASML, a Dutch company. ASML depends on parts sourced from the U.S. If CCP occupies Taiwan and takes over TSMC, the Dutch will be barred (by the US) from selling lithography machine to TSMC.

Even when all those countries start producing chips, it is less than 10 % of tsmc’s total capacity
Not to mention, except in Japan, those fabs are still 2-3 generations behind Taiwan fabs

A fab needs thousands experienced engineers to run and this is the biggest difficulty tsmc facing in the US ( they can’t find enough people)
They are going to send extra 600 people from Taiwan but can’t get visas because of the pressures from the US workers Union
If China can product quality chip as Taiwan it will not has war anymore. Except Jealousing War may happen😅
