Also, the mog's chassis was designed to flex, further increasing axle articulation. The mog is really one hell of a vehicle.

Ok everyone is saying hummer was at a disadvantage or unimog is the best of all time. They were made for different applications. A hummer was meant to be a light attack vehicle in the desert. The unimog is meant to be a tough, unstoppable heavy-carry truck in the woodlands and swamps of Europe.

Had a unclog back in the 80s when I worked for CN Rail. Fricking awesome machine. On track, on highway. Rigged to the nines with hiabs and other gear. Really loved it.
Quite different vehicles with different roles, it's hard to compare them. The unimog had to turn on its diff lockers, that's the only reason it stopped. The Hummer is faster on the flat, personnel carrier, heavier, lower. The Unimog is slower, for carrying loads, higher centre of gravity. EDIT the unimig has PTO's, agricultural equipment attachments like front end loaders, fork lifts, back hoes. It's a tractor on steroids
Fully laden with 1ton payload the Hummer has a top speed of 55mph. Fully laden the Unimog U5000 weighs in at 27500lb/12.5ton (payload 16500lb or 7.5 ton) one of 60mph.
Unimog is the official vehicle of the ONU forces and the most national forces at the world.I saw the mudd performance in the Peruvian jungles is amazing.
I've had the pleasure of testing the original Hummer back in 91. It was an awesome beast. However, the unimog and the Hummer can't really be compared in my opinion. One is built solely for being a universal tool that happens to have wheels and portal axles. The other is an awesome compromise between a car, a truck and a gun platform made from parts that are easily obtainable if anything should break. Yes, they are both awesome off road vehicles. Yes, they both have 4 wheels and an engine. But that is pretty much where the similarities end.
+Alf Torp. Agreed, they were built for different purposes and both are awesome. But it is interesting to see what both can do in similar condition. Both did great.
World-“Hey Germans, make a vehicle that can go anywhere” MB-“Hold my beer” Lmfao I’m a red blooded American but I know when it comes to our military it’s built by the lowest bidder. The Unimog is a superior machine all the way around
Not necessarily... They are 2 completely different vehicles. The Unimog is more a kin to a road going farm tractor. In fact lots of people all over the world use them as such. Whereas the H1 is designed specifically to be much more nimble with a far lower center of gravity. With gears and portal boxes at each wheel that give it the unique abilities it has while off-roading. You know...things like being able to climb vertical ledges. And no I'm not suggesting the Unimog can't do these things. We know it can. And does them quite well. I'm just noting that they are completely different vehicles.
Well we don't know if the Hummer completes it because it was cut short when it lost traction. For those observant enough to notice, the Humvee began losing traction at the large rock on the right. That is where the video cut to the Mog, which also lost traction at that point but then powered past it.
Very different vehicles. I think the Unimog would be better overall offroad, however the Hummer is also able to carry a lot of people in comfort, do road duties much better. Both are great vehicles at doing what they are designed to do.
4 People is a lot? The M998 can transport 2+8 Soldiers, the Unimog can 3+8 (2/3 with comfort, 8 without comfort. In my time at the german army, we had a training with the US Army and change the cars, on the end of this day, they wouldnt give us our Unimog back
Unimog and Hummer have vastly different roles and intended purposes. To compare one to the other isn't valid. Both are exceptional vehicles for the purposes they were designed.
No matter how far out in the wilds of Baja California I get in my lifted Xterra with 33” M/Ts I always run into a beater 90’s Corolla with bald tires and an entire family in it coming the other way. ¡Vaya con Dios, amigos!
I still to this day find Hummer to be pointless. This video just points this out another time. The Danish military have Mercedes GD (the predecessor to the G-class), Unimogs and a Swiss equivalent to the Hummer that they have a few of because they need them for light armoured operations. When it comes to terrain operations they only choose Mercedes... and that's for a GOOD reason. That said Hummers are fun to drive for one reason people move out of you way when you meet's one the road! :-D
Off-road the only competition to a Unimog is a Pinzgauer. The Hummer is useful militarily if you want to traverse flatish deserts at speed. Germany and Switzerland haven't got those, they've got mountains instead and then you really want either a Mog or a Pinzgauer. The Pinzgauer is about as fast as a Humvee with 100 (6X6) or 110 (4x4) vs 113km/h) but has a 2.5 ton payload to the Humvees 1.1t. The Moggy is slower at 93km/h but it can carry 7.5ton! Humvees were expensive! The US Army paid $220 000 for each! The Unimog looks like a bargain now.
I am not experienced with either vehicle, and don 't really care one way, or the other. The Mog had considerable more ground clearance and bigger tires, but the Hummer came up the rocks, with less slippage. Why did they cut the Hummer off when it started over the large hump on the left, and switch to the Unimog, for a lot longer, and until the end of the video? Fair is fair.
Thank you for this very nice comparison, thumbs up! I always loved Unimogs but don't think one of them is better or worse, both Unimog and Hummer are very nice machines having their own purpose.
This shit is absolutely LAUGHABLE. Hummers at best, are the tabloid stories of boy-town. Unimogs are a true legacy of manly accomplishment. A 1950 Mog laughs at today's Hollywierd vehicle designs. Mogs are a fine primary insight as to how as a species, should be, and have been, striving for the best.
funny, but Hummer did better on this hill... that is LAUGHABLE 🤣🤣🤣 (for unimog fanboys -> I'm not saying which one is better... just stating the fact for this specific episode)
Unimog is underpowered, that is the simple cause. Although they are very capable for offroad, their primary intention for use is not this, hence the power train is not made for it. Get an unimog and give it correct power output for such use for it's size and then see results. Hummer on the other hand has a large enough engine, more in fact, hence it manages to get some obstacles . The ratio is completely different between power and size for these 2
First off a lot of these "video offroaders" have never driven either. I am quite familiar with the HMMWV (22 yrs Army mechanic retired). Second, the HMMWV was designed as a MILITARY VEHICLE to operate in a TACTICALl environment. It wasn't designed to be the ultimate off-roader. It makes no sense to have a vehicle that can scale cliffs if non of your follow on vehicles (support) can get there. It was built to contract specs which include width, height, load capacity, ground clearance, gradient traverse, etc. That said it does quite well off road. I have had the privilege of driving a few Unimogs (including the Army's SEE and FLU version). The 'Mog is one step a way from a tractor, and very well versed off road. By the way, the Army SEE sucks as a excavator. The FLU sucks as a forklift too. I love both of these vehicles, but I'd take a Unimog for off-road play. But If I'm back in a warzone the HMMWV (or a new JLTV) would be a healthier choice.
Unimog had bad tires...of all the Offroad / Military tires this is the one most suited for road applications.Put on a Michelin XML or a Dunlop SP T9 and it will perform better. Although there was a great lack of commitment by the driver. Of course its crawling, but you need to hit the bumps with just the right momentum to make the tire hop over...same goes for the Humvee though. Both great cars. But Unimog was made for cargo transport and Humvee for personal transport, different approach in engineering.
Unimog please. A huge problem that most people don’t discuss about the Hummer is the small fuel capacity that they have. It’s a 190hp / 380tq vehicle that gets about 8mpg with a 25 gallon tank. It’s grossly underpowered. It’s very capable but that engine is gutless for a vehicle capable of 12,500 GVW.
@@Freedomtooffroad Well have you tried a Unimog? I have seen them perform during my military service and they are astonishing. Just watch the massive ground clearance difference and especially the missing lower control arm. If carve over rocks you can get stuck. Also the water depth is beyond belief. I've seen Unimogs crawl through mud bogs with a waterline just below the windows.
as a german i have to say thats a bit unfair ! Unimog is a light truck and Hummer a Off Road military car. Better compare Hummer vs a Mercedes G class military .
@@oppx9525 omg, i drove these Unimogs at army time ! The 1500 but hey when the US mates come along with their Hummer ALL of us want to drive those Hummers....more comfortable. Only on small roads in forrest the wide Hummers sucks here....rest was quite above our Merc G class !!!
At Hohenfels, HMMWVs pretty much Stayed stuck. I know of at least 3 that disappeared permanently under that black goop. HMMWVs are good vehicles, but they truly suck in deep, thick mud. Too heavy and underpowered.
If you want to see a real Offroad challenge between a unimog vs. hummer I would be glad to put up my unimog against anyone hummer in any Ca/Nevada Offroad trail. Now that would be fun, who’s up for the challenge? I’ll even bring the film crew. 👍🏼
I would think a H1 Alfa would give you a better run for your money but prob still wouldn’t take the Mog. But there’s also substantial money difference in the two.
Is this really a fair comparison? I like both..but the Hum vee is a large Suv type vehicle, while the Mog is a proper truck. For me, it would take an awful lot to persuade me to have the H1 - Unimog every time - if only for its world wide reputation.
Um, where did you learn about vehicles? The Hummer is built on a full truck like frame and even comes in a truck format. Just because this one had a full shell doesn't make it an "SUV" by American modern consumer ideals. Both vehicles are highly capable. And, I doubt you'd even know how to operate either one...
From the looks of many of the comments, people are confusing the latest Hummers (which are just Tahoe/Suburban copies) with the original H1 (which the military still uses). The H1 is an PHENOMENAL off-roader. THAT'S what it was designed to do for the US military. I have personally driven one at full throttle across the desert southwest in a Baja California race kind of way and it handled EVERY jump and every dive without any fuss. Although, I did lose the 2 water cans on the back...which I quickly replaced with someone else's before anyone noticed :)
Agree - lots of confusion..... US military did not use Hummer H1 - they use Humvee. Hummer H1 was the first in line of Hummers and based on Humvee built by AM General. Hummer H2 is the Hummer based on GM truck rather than AM General Humvee . It was built in next door plant where Humvee and Hummer H1 were built by AM General but owned by GM. Hummer H3 is Hummer based on Canyon/Colorado platform. It is Hummer evolution (version 3) and was tailored for wider consumer base. In my opinion - it is more important to look at specific capabilities rather than what it is based on, on what make/model it is.
I was serving as a mechanized combat engineer when our unit replaced M151A2 Jeeps with M998 HMMWVs. It was heartbreaking how unreliable and incapable the new platform was in the field. It's hard to believe the military stuck with that platform all these years.
i like the hummer h1 but the unimog it is much better the frame , axles , transmission and bigger tires make it stronger , the hummer h1 it"s not that good for extreme rockcrawling as the unimog
Two different missions. Unimog is an off road monster. Hummer is a multipurpose all terrain transport and weapons platform. Low profile. High towing capacity. Heavy payload. High mine survivability. Not really designed for heavy off roading in tight quarters. It's too wide anyway. I drove one in Okinawa and it wouldn't even fit down some of the streets. But that same truck was driven in 6' of breaking surf the same day and didn't even break a sweat. Both great vehicles for what they were designed for.
I have driven HMMWVs to hell and back. Could use more power. The 6.2 got the job done but even the 6.5 turbo wasnt enough. Have yet to drive a H1 Alpha with a duramax. Hurts when you get one airborne.
At the very end of the video we get a quick glance of the Mog's tires . They look well worn indeed. On fresh rubber there would be no contest. That said, there is a difference in how you drive a HMMWV you bought versus one Uncle Sam lets you borrow. Most of the guys I served with drove them a bit more assertively.
I have no real off-road experience, I really like both, they both seem pretty heavy though for deep mud, would a modified defender or Suzuki not be a better answer if you didn't need to Carry a load?
It would all depends on trail. It's more about size (width and length), weight, ground clearance, tire traction, axle ratio, approach/departure angles, axle articulation - and not really about make and model :-)
The bottom line is there both epic off-road, and way more capable than most people will ever use them too. The H1 looks badass the Unimog looks more purposeful in my opinion.
I worked with several Unimogs in Cameroon Army in the deep jungle - there is nothing better! Have a look to the ground clearance and the engin works with palm oil....
Humman Off-Road Adventures l never driven humer , l from croatia region dalmacia its very very rocky no roads , unimog with eqviment save us from fire manny times
UNiversal MOtor Gerät. UNIMOG! Originally developed for farmers to serve as both, a tractor (ploughing et cetera) and a pickup truck. A role in which it didn't succed. Nevertheless the vehicle Turner out to be a big success as multi purpose vehicle with road construction companies (especially short wheelbase. For duties such as mowing, pulling towed street rollers, compactors, sweeping, watering and light transport et cetera) and of course the military.
Anton Chigurh. I thought turner made your statement sound more authentic. Their are times I find broken english very pleasent to read. It lets me see that their are people. Who are trying to make an honest and respectfull attempt. To communicate his her thoughts to someone of another race. I dislike those who dont. I think it is very desrespectfull to make other people do transulating.
When there was severe flooding in Germany at the beginning of this summer, the only thing thst could go through the water to rescue people who had been trapped jn their houses were boats... and Unimogs!
What was the tire Pressure, Unimog looked to be street PSI a little less bounce on the rocks and a little more traction. And yes they both can go places you think they shouldn't
H1's are troop transport vehicles suited best for light off-roading or desert environments. They were never designed to do this kind of stuff. My Jeep would eat this trail up, however.
Right the jeep is great for this, but it is far too expensive (outside u.s.a.) and not easy to get parts, thats why they have success in america and in the rest of the world they are more of a luxury item (trust me, i live in argentina)
Testing in condition like this depends very high from the Tires you use. The Mog had "normal" street tyres. But nevertheless the result was good for both.
Hummer-ul este bun nimic de comentat, dar problema este că Unimog nu a avut anvelope bune iar șoferul nu la folosit la capacitate maximă, Unimog poate mult mai mult.
Just for info: The first Unimog has been a American/German project! ;) My favorit is the unimog, because we have the ~1974s U406 ... Greets from Germany
I find these comparisons kind of shaky, since going up a trail so variable, so organic is going to be different every time you lay a tire down. It even changes after somebody gone head of you just once, sometimes for the better, sometimes making it worse. Your tires are going to shift to slightly different grips by the inch, every time. In this particular test I noticed the Hummer slipped a bit and stopped, and the video cuts to the Mog. Then Unimog slips once and stops, you hear the airbrake, then they make good on a second attempt. Again, this is one of a thousand ways it could go, and it seems you need some 4 out of 5 runs or more to let us see more info or a bit more variables and possibilities. I have just an old Isuzu Trooper hahaha... a '99 with only aftermarket springs/shocks. I failed going up a very steep, moist trail in the desert (rare rain the day before), with crumbling earth caking up my mediocre off-road tires. I went back for one more try (my fourth)... after letting my pressure go from 35 to 30PSI, and taking a more dangerous but slightly different line, tires just had a foot to the right of the original track. I made it without much fuss from the Trooper at all. Looking back scared me, as I could hardly believe the steepness that stock old SUV just climbed, and some guys in a 4runner even cheered me as they slowly crept by realizing what I just did. You never know what might happen on just another run.
I think Unimogs are awesome (well the newer ones look weird but the older boxy one I love) but I got the impression that the Hummer driver was really not trying that hard
they are opposites in terms of offroad terrain capability. the hummer would destroy the unimog in a baja race setting. still love that quirky unimog though, would be nice to see one in the states.

And yet the Hummer is no faster top speed wise than the Unimog being able to carry 10 ton payload compared to the Hummers 0.9t.
The unimog is a beast, it chews everything
Both are a bit big and heavy IMHO. Jeep TJ with 3" lift and good tires would get the job done nicely. But I'd take the Unimog over the Humvee.
Hummer is not a off road vehicle but to impress the girls in the city
+sid yes,girls with no brain
Have you met many girls with PhD?
Literally dozens. That might say more about the people we like to hang out with though.
Try again my H1 has been thru mud, snow, sand, crawling, ice roads, and I crossed a 5 foot deep river in AZ. Never had to use my winch.
I'll use a line from a movie we know:
- I can get out and run faster than this!!!
The UNIMOG - king of offroad-vehicles !!!
+TheAnvil1971 Isn't that slogan used by Tatra? The winner of Dakar in the truck class many times and the European truck challenges.
+PropperJ
I don't know. But we had Unimogs at my time at the german army. Those cars are real monsters on the trail.
It was great fun driving them.
+TheAnvil1971 Ural, kamaz, zil...those are great too :)
+ApocGuy. I think Kamaz did very well in Dakar, and I like it more than Ural or Zil
Not same result! Because the driver of the Unimog had no idea, apparently, how to use it properly.
World-“Hey Germans, make a vehicle that can go anywhere”
MB-“Hold my beer”
Lmfao I’m a red blooded American but I know when it comes to our military it’s built by the lowest bidder.
Trevor de la rosa Respect man for saying it how it is👏👏🤙
Hummer: "Oh god this terrain sucks!"
Well we don't know if the Hummer completes it because it was cut short when it lost traction. For those observant enough to notice, the Humvee began losing traction at the large rock on the right. That is where the video cut to the Mog, which also lost traction at that point but then powered past it.
How calm and collected the Mog is .
In my view, there is hardly a competitor for the Mercedes Benz Unimog that is so versatile.
High quality made in germany. 👍🇩🇪
#Lol the Unimog didnÄt even have the diff locks on until he was half way up.
Can't say the result surprises me at all.
In my time at the german army, we had a training with the US Army and change the cars, on the end of this day, they wouldnt give us our Unimog back
i trained off road on S404 and on 712M. fantastic vehicles!
Unimog and Hummer have vastly different roles and intended purposes. To compare one to the other isn't valid. Both are exceptional vehicles for the purposes they were designed.
And then you see the Zambian Taxi driver in his Corolla coming up the same hill... Any driving school student can come up this hill in a Unimog.
@Åke Åkesson Och människor som inte kan åke en bil :D
Different things. Hummer is a military vehicle first. One of the early specs was that you where supposed to be able to put 4 of them into a Hercules.
Comparing fuel consumption onroad, the MOG takes a bit less, 11 miles/gallon vs 8 miles/gallon of the humvee.
Unimog all day!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Don't think it is a good choice for daily drive to work :-)

Unimug is in a different league, just like any other German technology .😀😁😂
I'll take the Uni any day, it has the option for 6 wheel drive with additional trailer.

This shit is absolutely LAUGHABLE. Hummers at best, are the tabloid stories of boy-town. Unimogs are a true legacy of manly accomplishment. A 1950 Mog laughs at today's Hollywierd vehicle designs. Mogs are a fine primary insight as to how as a species, should be, and have been, striving for the best.
funny, but Hummer did better on this hill... that is LAUGHABLE 🤣🤣🤣
(for unimog fanboys -> I'm not saying which one is better... just stating the fact for this specific episode)
@@NewRoad Unimog need more extreme challenge.
Just saying unimogs went the highest a wheeled vehicle went
Unimog is underpowered, that is the simple cause.
Although they are very capable for offroad, their primary intention for use is not this, hence the power train is not made for it.
Get an unimog and give it correct power output for such use for it's size and then see results.
Hummer on the other hand has a large enough engine, more in fact, hence it manages to get some obstacles . The ratio is completely different between power and size for these 2
@@roberts.wilson1848 John the H1 is also very under powered until you get to the last year that had the duramax but that was only 1 year.
Awesome comments! It's always good to hear and learn from people who have knowledge and real experience.
Not to mention the bullet resistant steel, a dead weight for off roading...
Der unimog ist mehr wie ein lastwagen und der hummer wie ein jeeb
Unimog please. A huge problem that most people don’t discuss about the Hummer is the small fuel capacity that they have. It’s a 190hp / 380tq vehicle that gets about 8mpg with a 25 gallon tank.
It’s grossly underpowered. It’s very capable but that engine is gutless for a vehicle capable of 12,500 GVW.
I own both, so far the only advantage has been the Mog is taller and can cross a deeper river because of the increased snorkel height.
you own both and you still dont know shit.
Unimog any day of the week. Just look at the clearance. Enough said.
There is a reason world travellers use Unimogs for the most remote parts of the world while carrying beds, a kitchen etc.
Thank you for watching
Obviously they would use unimogs but I'd much rather take hummer cuz I've driven em in pitchett canyon which is not easy
@@Freedomtooffroad Well have you tried a Unimog? I have seen them perform during my military service and they are astonishing. @@craigthescott5074 Any hummer, any time! Let's do this! Also, depending on the unimog, they are a lot less money than a hummer.
Unimogs are awesome.. we had them eith NZ Army.. thanks👍🇳🇿

Unimog is the better utility no questions asked. Also narrower which would be an advantage on some off road tracks in woods
We never see if the Humvee made it out...guess why! Because the unimog had to pull him out ;)

Unimog looked like it had an easier time.
the dude stopped and it seemed like it would tip over faaaar easier
@@humveeadventures You thought the Unimog would tip over? If so, watch some more Unimog videos. ;-)

Unimog 👍👍👍👍
I have no real off-road experience, I really like both, they both seem pretty heavy though for deep mud, would a modified defender or Suzuki not be a better answer if you didn't need to Carry a load?
It would all depends on trail. It's more about size (width and length), weight, ground clearance, tire traction, axle ratio, approach/departure angles, axle articulation - and not really about make and model :-)
The bottom line is there both epic off-road, and way more capable than most people will ever use them too. The H1 looks badass the Unimog looks more purposeful in my opinion.

Just chuck the Hummer on the back and get to the campsite so we can all have a beer.
