    I've been subscribed since the very beginning. There's not one video of yours I haven't watched. And yet, you still manage to surprise me! I swore you were gonna get someone to install it, or someone to help you at least!! Good God Jeff!!
    BTW, totally lol'd when you brought the Beetle, inmediately I thought "thank God it's not the 911 or 240!!".
    Congrats on the lift!
    PS: loved Mrs.Jeff idea of leaving the camera on the whole weekend, just in case lol!

      @@HomeBuiltByJeff perhaps 😊 at almost 6ft 2inch I really love not bending or sitting under cars.

      Sooooooo frustrating😊

    • @ibidu1
      @ibidu1 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@HomeBuiltByJeff I dont think it will get messy and I dont think it will cost much to box out a section of the roof, raise it with box metal. You can recycle the section of roof that you will be raising and just add on some roofing for the sides, and some asphalt patch to deal with the edges and corners. You have a welder, and you can use the lift to help give u access to the lower portions.

    Great lift for the space! One thing I'd advise is to stability test when you lift a car. We call it a "shake test" because we lift about afoot off of the ground and then we shake the car a little by pushing on it. A buddy of mine actually lost someone he knew who never did a shake test when a car fell off of a lift onto him.

    Love your reaction to the lift, I had the same feelings the day I got mine! I see an automatic roof opening in your future LOL. They make a variety of rolling chairs that work great under a lift, I have a much lower ceiling then yours, it still makes life soooo much easier! They also make pucks with grooves cut into them that work great for the 911 floor pan seams so you don't damage them, you could make something i'm sure :)

    Lovely job; I'd love to have a hoist like that, but I'm in the UK and there's a limitation to how high you can build a workshop in your garden, so when I built my workshop, I knew the idea of the hoist wasn't going to happen. Oh well, I'll just admire yours; perhaps I should move to "down-under". Oh, I was going to suggest raising a section of your roof, but someone already has. :)

    I went over to see a good friends new house, It was nice, a little bit of property. He took me out to the rather large garage, he didnt say a word. He opened the double garage door with a clicker, while it was opening he pointed out a real nice tree, and said look at that tree isnt it nice, I looked at it, and when I turned back around the door was open. And there in all its glory was a unbelievable shop, and it had 2, yes 2, basically new lifts, A/C and Heat, checkerboard floor, that shined, and a I-Beam crane across the whole place, With a Hoist ! Large built in metal work benches, AND restroom W/ shower. I asked him if he wanted to adopt me. He said Charles your old enough to be my Grandfather, my response was. SO what "Dad"
    Take your shoes off, it will give you a extra inch.
    Somehow your excitement travels through the screen. After watching I walked into the kitchen, my 46 year old son was having breakfast, Im excited, and said alright he got a New Lift, he looks up from his Wheaties bowl, and said who. That guy I watch on the other side of the earth. He said great, do you know where my car keys are ?. I said well if they were...never mind.
    Congrats, kinda like having a child, but no crying and burping. And you just thought you had friends !
    Sorry I read real boring writers, and it reflects in my typin.

      No mention of the house, of course. Could have been a single-wide trailer with a hole in the roof and it would still be the ultimate home. You can sleep in a garage but you can't change a clutch in a house.

    • @charlesmiller5078
      @charlesmiller5078 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh, It was a least a 1 1/2 million house, with a very large pool and a high dive. The guy made and makes alot of money selling medical Ins to the middle class poor, with such a high deductible they never get used. He says Obama Care was his ticket to wealth. The garage also has a nice high up platform for a large flat screen, apparently the last owner took that. But left all the cabling. Plug and Plug. The new owner has 2 new cars under warranty and a really small box of tools, the ceiling in the place is at least 20 foot tall, with great lighting, Im sure the garage costs more then my house did, but If I remember the last owner left me a busted floor jack, which I repaired. Thank You, who ever you were. Still use it 8 years later. Forgot a rusted hammer, yes its used most everyday, by my son as a door stop. Useless paper pusher. But he pays all the bills, door stop away my friend. He grips about paying 35 dollars a month for VA medical, no deductible free drugs, well he did type reports in the Air Force for 4 years in Virginia. Spent the night in strip clubs. And for this we pay for his Med till the day he ...never mind.
      Oh forgot I did rebuild a Harley in my Living Room when I was 18, my Mom said why is all this stuff in your living room, Mom its a apartment get real, Im 66, and she just turned 97, I tell her she looks more like 96, she lives with my sister, thank God. And still dosent approve of me drag racing across the local bridges, this is what you get when you kick your kid out at 15 mother Dearest. She just quit driving 4 years ago, 6 smash ups in 1 year, the insurance company said sure we will extend your policy for 1 pound of gold every 6 months, she said she wasnt quite sure but it sounded a little more then the 643 dollars a month she gets from her Uncle Sam. But she is getting a 3 dollar raise this year, so you never know. I wish everyone the experience of driving your 97 year old Mother to Wal-Mart. Were there 3 hours, she rides in a cool electric cart, I push and walk.Shes gotta talk to her Peeps. Hey Mary how you doing , Jesus Mom can we please get going already. And once every 2 months we take her sister along, she a young 88. We normally start a traffic jam with the electric carts. Sorry I get carted away sometimes, what were we talking about, Oh the house, yea it was passable. Like a can of Tuna fish in a cat cage.

  • @mrclown7469

    Since you're going to be lifting the same cars all the time, you should make a little height gauge so you don't need to keep checking for the roof. Draw a line with a marker pen on the arm where it meets the pillar , then make some height labels with painters tape for each car on the pillar. Then you just have to line up the arm line with the tape line for that car when lifting it.

    The thickness of the floor cement is surely just one factor. How do you assess the strength of the concrete is up to the job? Can you have a sample tested or do you really just rely on warning cracks to appear? I have drilled into concrete floors that are a weak sandy mix and full of air bubbles, up to the other extreme, being super hard concrete floors, that bunts a drill bit in seconds.

    So much easier now . But you will wish you put it in the middle,so you have 2 foot more lift and can walk around hoist and under the car.
    Drive cars though under cars and use 'go jacks' to move the cars around

    • @HomeBuiltByJeff
      @HomeBuiltByJeff  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, mainly because if it was in the middle I would never get cars around it. As it is there is just room. Next shed will be bigger.

    These two post lifts are scary, why isn't there a cross brace at the top of the two posts??? Without that, there are massive forces pulling on the post outer concrete mounting bolts .. and those bolts are only held into the concrete with bolt expansion gizmos (concrete is not strong in tension, a crack at an anchor hole = disaster). I'm surprised a lot of these 2 post units don't fall over, which would be a very dangerous situation! Can someone convince me these 2 post type units are safer than they appear?

    • @HomeBuiltByJeff
      @HomeBuiltByJeff  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      There are some clear floor hoists that have a top bar, but they are VERY tall. I am with you on the forces, but these have been used for years and years, so they are pretty well worked out.

    • @KrustyKlown
      @KrustyKlown 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@HomeBuiltByJeff understood .. but a quick look on youtube will show you several of these 2 posts lifts collapsing on people, because the concrete anchoring system failed. Seems risky, would seem monitoring the anchor bolt tightening torque before every use would seem wise .. at least for the first couple years of use.

    Jeff, odd question but any chance of a picture of where you placed the arms on the Beetle when you lifted it? Going to be working on my 74 at a friend's place with a 2 post and wondering best locations to use. Thanks.

    • @HomeBuiltByJeff
      @HomeBuiltByJeff  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Beetle is a pain. I placed them on the factory rear jacking points and then on the bolt points on the pan behind the front wheels. The car has to be a long way towards the back of the hoist, and the arms only just reached.

    THAT is some garage porn. Question: what’s the process for installing bolts into concrete? I get the drilling, but how do the bolts mount? Do you need anchors like you would for drywall?

    • @ToastyCornFlakes
      @ToastyCornFlakes 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There are specific fasteners made to fasten bolts in to drywall. They expand as you tighten them down (which is what the torque wrench is for). I believe they are called concrete wedge anchors.

    • @HomeBuiltByJeff
      @HomeBuiltByJeff  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They are big dyna bolts so as Mr Flakes mentioned they expand as you tighten them and they bite into the concrete. Once they are in you can't get them back out.

    • @nigelpearson2976
      @nigelpearson2976 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Actually @@HomeBuiltByJeff you can sometimes get them out if you are lucky!
      Angle grind most of the protruding bolt off, tap the rest into the sleeve with a centre punch,
      and long-nosed pliers on the metal sleeve. Wriggle it around enough to get vice grips on the sleeve. Pull sleeve out, then a magnet on the bolt

    • @HomeBuiltByJeff
      @HomeBuiltByJeff  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have done that on some, but these ones have the top of the collar deep in the hole so you can't get at it. I think these are in there for good ;)
