Only problem is the man hours it took to build it. They would never be able to keep the cost low enough to make it work. It would probably over 5k for a boat like that, which is kinda stupid when you can get a job boat for cheaper.
Why? It's top heavy as shit, and cost way more to make than he says. He's clearly not considering tools or time. The reason boats like this are not on the market is because they're garbage. Just because you put power poles on something doesn't make it good. The hull itself is gonna be 3k, factor in all that work and material and tools, and this dude is full of crap when he's trying to say he built this for under 5k.

I must have watched this video a dozen times by now and I love it. Kayak killer? Not quite. But perhaps the most impressive utilitarian tiny boat to date.
After finding Send It John Boats channel I came over here. We sold our 17ft aluminum tracker a couple years ago. I miss having a boat plus I want to learn Tig welding. So here I am. Time to start looking for a Tincan and work on it as the budget allows. I'm in East TN so I have access to some good parts places around here but I'll be asking questions but hopefully there is already a video on what I need so I dont need to bug anyone.
You can find REALLY nice used paddle kayaks (some even throw in nice paddles and life jackets etc) for $400-$700. I'm talking ocean kayaks, viking kayaks, Wilderness systems tarpons etc the types of paddle kayaks that I've personally caught saifish, tigers, mahi, huge kings, cobia, black tip/white tip etc and used the same kayaks to go inshore and slay bull reds, gator trout, stud flatties, mangroves etc.... and a different day plop it in some pond or lake and catch bass all day long. NOTHING will ever beat a kayak for the money. Even if Your talking new paddle kayaks capable of extreme offshore kayaking to calm ponds there are plenty in the plus or minus $1,000 price range that you can paddle all day long, they track well, are fast, cut through the waves like a hot knife through butter and will keep you in amazing shape... I went from 300lbs to 180lbs fit as a fiddle with more endurance than a horse. Truly, the kayak is king and with the workout you get... will add a couple years to your life.
I have kayaks and aluminum boats with outboards. I like them both. Each has it's advantages. I use whichever seems best for the kind of fishing I want to do. Michael builds some awesome boats but I don't look at the comparison between kayaks and tin boats as a competition.

I have a 1232 riveted Jon and it makes a great river boat. I kept it pretty basic and just added a folding swivel seat on the rear bench, a sub floor, and anchor lift system. I can sit, stand, and walk up and down the boat no problem. Between the boat being so light and having an oversized trolling motor im able to talk it up river a few miles and float back down.
The routing skills were crazy good! Great build! I did this to an old Bass Tracker 3….this video makes me miss that boat! I agree… the tin boat community is top notch! They really came through for me when I needed their help!
Cool build for bass fishing. Love all the storage. Biggest advantage with a kayak is they can go anywhere including the ocean. I have a Solo Skiff which gives me the kayak with the 6hp motor but definitely lacks the storage of this build significantly.
Really cool boat!! Nice job too, like those synthetic flooring and panels. Did really good freehand work with that trimmer. I’m a retired carpenter and remember I did some freehand trimmer work occasionally 👍
That thing is super cool, I'm not sure if I'd give up my hobie for it. As a proof of concept, you guys killed it, I could certainly see this as a genesis for more inspiration and experimentation in the small craft and kayak communities. Outstanding work.
A simple wood and fiberglass "skeleton" seems to be the obvious evolution. You could basically run sticks in a grid and glass 'em all together. Would be lighter and stronger than that thin-walled aluminum. This is not a knock on this build, but rather looking for ways to further prove the concept. I think if you could get the dry weight down under 150 lbs, it would be a huge advantage. Also, unless those manual pole anchors have really good reach, I think I would substitute a simple pole-through-sleeve pole anchor and save several pounds each.
The real failure of the kayak industry imo is the pricing. It started out as a way for the average person to get on the water and fish- that was the niche they were trying to fill. Nowadays ppl seem to think they were trying to make something portable that could get into skinny water and blah, blah, blah- those are definitely beneficial points to owning one but I don't think it was the original intent. The main purpose was to make something much, much cheaper and easier for the average person to buy, store, transport, launch, and fish off. But that goal has long ago been abandoned and now we just see more and more expensive kayaks and small boat setups- they cost as much as a full sized tin rig now. For less than 5gs I can buy an almost new full sized tracker w/trolling motor and trailer- ready to go. Not that I would want that over a kayak but- the point was to make them more accessible to the average Joe- that's not happening anymore. The company who finds a way to offer stability and a decent platform to ppl that they can expand on as they go- for less than a thousand dollars, is going to kill it. But these Lifetime offerings and kayaks like them- they're missing the mark horribly. They're so close to getting it right but, they always screw it up. They fail to make their kayak in a way that you can easily add things like a main motor, trolling motor, peddle drive, rudder, electronics, etc.- they don't even make it easy to add a simple gear track or anchor system. Every time you want to add something you find yourself having to seriously modify the platform so it will fit and work. How difficult is it to look at the market, see what accessories are the most widely used, and make your kayak so that it accepts them? And do it for less than a grand- it shouldn't be that hard really.
I agree (mostly)...I have been kayak fishing for decades...so I was into this WAY before it was even a "thing". For me and a lot of OG fishing kayakers, it was simply a great alternative to using a float tube, and that was it. I started out white water kayaking in the 80s and at some point had a revelation that, "hey, this would work on calm water just fine and I can cover way more water than with my slow, ponderous float tube"...back in those days people looked at me like a circus freak show for fishing from such an weird platform...fast forward 30 years and now it is THE fad in fishing...and I hate it. You are right though, that the kayak industry has evolved from a great, cheap alternative to a float tube, into $5000 battle ships. Yeah, I know I am just a grumpy old man, and kayaking elitist, but once you start talking about motorizing your kayak, and adding electronics, and adding anchor trollies, and adding down riggers, etc etc etc ...just go buy a f'ing boat! At that point you have completely defeated the entire purpose of having a kayak to begin with, and this is the part that I disagree with you on...the cheap lifetime kayak is the direction things should be going, as the simple, lightweight, super portal, minimalist approach is supposed to be the whole point of kayaking.
I disagree completely. There are more affordable kayaks on the market than ever before. You can get Pelicans and sun raiders just about any Walmart. When I bought my first Ocean Kayak Scrambler in 03 you had to go to a specialty kayak shop to find one. Yes there are plenty of expensive yaks out there too but we just have options now. I fish out of my 20-year-old OK scrambler more than my Hobies simply because it's easier to toss in the river and go for a quick after work trip. But I like having the hobies for when I want to fish bigger water all day.

And the customers ultimately drive the market. Large kayak manufacturers have marketing teams who job it is to figure out what people want. People who claim the big high dollar fishing kayaks are ruining kayaking just dont want others on "their" water and I dont blame them for it...who want there secret fishing spot to blowup with every tom, dick, and jane. But those large kayaks aren't ruining kayak... they're just for people who have different desires than those who want a small paddle kayak
@@beenstork exactly. Kayaks used to be fairly expensive. My first ocean kayak was around 500 bucks for just the kayak and seat in 03. Now 500 bucks will get a purpose built fishing yak that doesn't need much to be a serious fishing rig. Also Hobies are awesome and worth every penny, if your hating on the high end kayaks you don't know what your missing out on.
Since you mentioned not tearing out the pre-formed bench seats, do you think one could instead cut an opening into the bench seat and do a drop in hatch pre made hatch like you have shown in other videos??
Horses for courses. I've had boats for bass fishing from 9.5 to 21feet in length. One thing that I know deep down now: If I'm driving to the lake, taking my free time to fish, I want to be able to run the water conditions when I get there. For me, that's a 20ft Gambler with 275hp. For others, it may be a 12 foot Jon boat. Just depends on your needs. I ended up with a full size bass boat after spending many weekends getting tossed around in big waves, big water, running out of storage, and not having enough deck space. Again, what works for me, might not be ideal for you. I do commend the amount of effort that goes into these little boats though, and I'm glad they're inspiring people to get out on the water.
This is Awesome. I remember me and my best friend when we were like 15 - 16 and our neighbor who was 30 had a little john boat and drivers license and a truck, and us two and the neighbor would get in that thing with a trolling motor and go fishing everywhere normal boats couldn't. we should have pimped it out like this !
Cool video and very cool build! I’ve never been in one of those giant kayaks but I’ve always wanted one but after seeing this I’d probably want the boat more just because of the stability.
Very cool, well thought out build. But I think the last comment sealed the deal… “2 people? Not so much.” My thought in transitioning to a truckable boat from a kayak would be to take a kid or even a buddy with, but I don’t think this would be stable enough for them. Sitting on a basic tandem kayak with fewer accessories allows them a safer platform to fish from, especially in our local lakes with lots of wake surfing going on. Plus the boat is way bigger to store vs a kayak on its side for those of us with minimal space for stuff. I still caught some great tips for build approaches and loved the fit/finish you got overall. Keep it up!
Super badass! If you could make and sell these for 8000 without all the bells and whistles then it would definitely be highly competitive with a PA 14. Something tells me that manufacturing this for sale would cost a heck of a lot more though. Still, super badass.
With all the hours and labor that went into that boat, it’s like the Ferrari of John boats. I mean what a awesome custom build. I would want a pretty penny for all the time and hours and craftsmanship put into it!
This is a bad ass boat, and I would love to own one over a hobie 360 any day. I find it hard to believe this could be built new by anyone for at or "just under" 5k. Would love to see an accurate price sheet for the build. Considering a jon boat, outboard, trolling motor, and pro nav would net you around 4.2k brand new...that's not taking into account all the other materials, consumables, and of course tooling to build this thing. If this is supposed to be considered a *remotely* accurate comparison, that all needs to be taken into consideration.
anodizing may also increase the structural strength of your hatches and deck that coud be done in a reasonable tank im so glad i found you i have wanted to do a project like this for awhile
That is a really sweet build! But like you said, unless you could do it yourself, it would be much more of a cost to have it built. Personally, I’d prefer it with less deck and just a bit more seating. Would love to see you guys do a build on a Pelican Bass Raider!
That thing is jaw dropping. This is something I must consider building (or having built). As a larger guy with bad knees kayaks just aren't something I am fond of. The Kaku Zulu Hybrid was on my short list. But this would be exactly what I want for mangrove fishing and transport to and from my saltwater wade fishing spots. I certainly don't have your skill set. My build would look like a hack job. I've got a 1985 Alumacraft 1236 sitting behind the house. Hmm, time to play perhaps.
Awesome video and sick boat, I definitely want one lol! I am an electrician. Romex can breakdown with constant moisture and drying out. I've seen it ran in outdoor kitchens and they short out internally because the sheathing on the wire cracks from getting wet and drying out. THHN should be used instead.
Nice little bass boat. Looks clean. I'm definitely thinking of building one since we lost the use of our marina slip at our lake this year. Well, we didn't lose it, we gave it up to an elderly couple who are in their 70s. I felt bad watching them bring the boat in & out of the water almost every day. So I have up my slip so they can enjoy their retirement. Something this small I can launch it right out of our backyard where won't need a ramp. Next year we get to build our dock which will be awesome.

As a guy that works in a kayak shop, and owns 3 vibe shearwaters, I’m definitely watching this whole video, and loving ever second of it. But I would try and do this with a Panga style boat for saltwater. We are hoping to get into modifying Job Boats and selling them as we already deal in solo skiffs as well.
Are you guys selling these? Awesome mix between the two and would take off since the kayak tournament world is taking off and people are modifying them with outboards and trolling motor. This is definitely a breakthrough build. I would buy one
I got a 16 ft monark I believe it's the 1442 model but not completely sure.. you think I could use that as a platform or should I look for a smaller, actual flat bottom, mine is considered a semi flat!.

I took a 1648 lowe and built my first bass boat and it was a learning experience. I almost sank it on Havasu too with my wife on it with me, few weeks later she said ok to a glass boat...lol
I remember watching some of your jon boat mod videos almost 10 years ago when I had a V-bottom that I was looking into modding out. You have come A LONG way in your skill and know how. Cant wait to see where you'll be in another 10 years. I would love to see a company like tracker or lowe start making tiny bass and tiny v-bottom boat that offer the same features as the large ones or at least some of the same features. I think this will only keep gaining in popularity. It would take a large company like those to scale it up enough to make the small fishing boats cheap enough for the average Joe to buy because why would you buy a tiny boat that is 4/5 the cost of a full size???

Your work is unreal man! Awesome job. I do look at this a tiny-tiny boat. It can fill some of the roles that kayak does but its not a kayak killer. Theyre in just two different classes. Just my opinion. Killer work!
Should have compared it to the nucanoe frontier 12 since you had an outboard and trolling motor on the yak killer. I have seen some people put a 5hp coleman outboard on the frontier 12 with a 6 gallon tank.

I put a 10 foot 4 in round pvc pipe with a rounded 90 elbow along each side off my little 12’ Jon and it made a huge difference in stability. I don’t have to worry about feeling like I’m going to tip it just by standing up let along trying to piss off the side lol
Love this idea, I used to swim out to a floating dock and fly fish off of it. I liked having a flat platform to stand on top of the water to fish from. You have gave me something to consider here as a concept to fly fish from also.

Very nice I don't bass fish much I'm more of a Catfisherman I have a 10 foot jon boat I bought a couple years ago and it needs some work done to it before I take it on the water. I normally fish alone is there any suggestions you have for me to set it up for me for catfishing.

I agree (mostly)...I have been kayak fishing for decades...so I was into this WAY before it was even a "thing". For me and a lot of OG fishing kayakers, it was simply a great alternative to using a float tube, and that was it. I started out white water kayaking in the 80s and at some point had a revelation that, "hey, this would work on calm water just fine and I can cover way more water than with my slow, ponderous float tube"...back in those days people looked at me like a circus freak show for fishing from such an weird platform...fast forward 30 years and now it is THE fad in fishing...and I hate it. You are right though, that the kayak industry has evolved from a great, cheap alternative to a float tube, into $5000 battle ships. Yeah, I know I am just a grumpy old man, and kayaking elitist, but once you start talking about motorizing your kayak, and adding electronics, and adding anchor trollies, and adding down riggers, etc etc etc ...just go buy a f'ing boat! At that point you have completely defeated the entire purpose of having a kayak to begin with, and this is the part that I disagree with you on...the cheap lifetime kayak is the direction things should be going, as the simple, lightweight, super portal, minimalist approach is supposed to be the whole point of kayaking.
I disagree completely. There are more affordable kayaks on the market than ever before. You can get Pelicans and sun raiders just about any Walmart. When I bought my first Ocean Kayak Scrambler in 03 you had to go to a specialty kayak shop to find one. Yes there are plenty of expensive yaks out there too but we just have options now. I fish out of my 20-year-old OK scrambler more than my Hobies simply because it's easier to toss in the river and go for a quick after work trip. But I like having the hobies for when I want to fish bigger water all day.
@@ezye361slezzyne8 I agree. The big expensive kayaks get all the attention on social media and youtube but there are plenty of inexpensive minimalist kayaks out there. And the customers ultimately drive the market. Large kayak manufacturers have marketing teams who job it is to figure out what people want. People who claim the big high dollar fishing kayaks are ruining kayaking just dont want others on "their" water and I dont blame them for it...who want there secret fishing spot to blowup with every tom, dick, and jane. But those large kayaks aren't ruining kayak... they're just for people who have different desires than those who want a small paddle kayak
You can still buy $300 kayaks and those are a whole lot better than the comparable kayaks of 10-15 years ago
@@beenstork exactly. Kayaks used to be fairly expensive. My first ocean kayak was around 500 bucks for just the kayak and seat in 03. Now 500 bucks will get a purpose built fishing yak that doesn't need much to be a serious fishing rig. Also Hobies are awesome and worth every penny, if your hating on the high end kayaks you don't know what your missing out on.

Horses for courses. I've had boats for bass fishing from 9.5 to 21feet in length. One thing that I know deep down now: If I'm driving to the lake, taking my free time to fish, I want to be able to run the water conditions when I get there. For me, that's a 20ft Gambler with 275hp. For others, it may be a 12 foot Jon boat. Just depends on your needs. I ended up with a full size bass boat after spending many weekends getting tossed around in big waves, big water, running out of storage, and not having enough deck space. Again, what works for me, might not be ideal for you.
I do commend the amount of effort that goes into these little boats though, and I'm glad they're inspiring people to get out on the water.
This is Awesome. I remember me and my best friend when we were like 15 - 16 and our neighbor who was 30 had a little john boat and drivers license and a truck, and us two and the neighbor would get in that thing with a trolling motor and go fishing everywhere normal boats couldn't.

My thought in transitioning to a truckable boat from a kayak would be to take a kid or even a buddy with, but I don’t think this would be stable enough for them. Sitting on a basic tandem kayak with fewer accessories allows them a safer platform to fish from, especially in our local lakes with lots of wake surfing going on.
Plus the boat is way bigger to store vs a kayak on its side for those of us with minimal space for stuff.
I still caught some great tips for build approaches and loved the fit/finish you got overall. Keep it up!

Super badass! If you could make and sell these for 8000 without all the bells and whistles then it would definitely be highly competitive with a PA 14. Something tells me that manufacturing this for sale would cost a heck of a lot more though. Still, super badass.

This is a bad ass boat, and I would love to own one over a hobie 360 any day. I find it hard to believe this could be built new by anyone for at or "just under" 5k. Would love to see an accurate price sheet for the build. Considering a jon boat, outboard, trolling motor, and pro nav would net you around 4.2k brand new...that's not taking into account all the other materials, consumables, and of course tooling to build this thing. If this is supposed to be considered a *remotely* accurate comparison, that all needs to be taken into consideration.

anodizing may also increase the structural strength of your hatches and deck that coud be done in a reasonable tank im so glad i found you i have wanted to do a project like this for awhile

That is a really sweet build! But like you said, unless you could do it yourself, it would be much more of a cost to have it built. Personally, I’d prefer it with less deck and just a bit more seating. Would love to see you guys do a build on a Pelican Bass Raider!

That thing is jaw dropping. This is something I must consider building (or having built). As a larger guy with bad knees kayaks just aren't something I am fond of. The Kaku Zulu Hybrid was on my short list. But this would be exactly what I want for mangrove fishing and transport to and from my saltwater wade fishing spots. I certainly don't have your skill set. My build would look like a hack job. I've got a 1985 Alumacraft 1236 sitting behind the house. Hmm, time to play perhaps.

Right on the stability. One thing i lerned decades ago. you do not want a flat bottom boat. Much more stability in v hull.
Awesome video and sick boat, I definitely want one lol! I am an electrician. Romex can breakdown with constant moisture and drying out. I've seen it ran in outdoor kitchens and they short out internally because the sheathing on the wire cracks from getting wet and drying out. THHN should be used instead.
Nice little bass boat. Looks clean. I'm definitely thinking of building one since we lost the use of our marina slip at our lake this year. Well, we didn't lose it, we gave it up to an elderly couple who are in their 70s. I felt bad watching them bring the boat in & out of the water almost every day. So I have up my slip so they can enjoy their retirement. Something this small I can launch it right out of our backyard where won't need a ramp. Next year we get to build our dock which will be awesome.

But I would try and do this with a Panga style boat for saltwater.
We are hoping to get into modifying Job Boats and selling them as we already deal in solo skiffs as well.

I took a 1648 lowe and built my first bass boat and it was a learning experience. I almost sank it on Havasu too with my wife on it with me, few weeks later she said ok to a glass boat...lol

I remember watching some of your jon boat mod videos almost 10 years ago when I had a V-bottom that I was looking into modding out. You have come A LONG way in your skill and know how. Cant wait to see where you'll be in another 10 years. I would love to see a company like tracker or lowe start making tiny bass and tiny v-bottom boat that offer the same features as the large ones or at least some of the same features. I think this will only keep gaining in popularity. It would take a large company like those to scale it up enough to make the small fishing boats cheap enough for the average Joe to buy because why would you buy a tiny boat that is 4/5 the cost of a full size???

Your work is unreal man! Awesome job. I do look at this a tiny-tiny boat. It can fill some of the roles that kayak does but its not a kayak killer. Theyre in just two different classes. Just my opinion. Killer work!

Should have compared it to the nucanoe frontier 12 since you had an outboard and trolling motor on the yak killer. I have seen some people put a 5hp coleman outboard on the frontier 12 with a 6 gallon tank.

I put a 10 foot 4 in round pvc pipe with a rounded 90 elbow along each side off my little 12’ Jon and it made a huge difference in stability. I don’t have to worry about feeling like I’m going to tip it just by standing up let along trying to piss off the side lol
Love this idea, I used to swim out to a floating dock and fly fish off of it. I liked having a flat platform to stand on top of the water to fish from. You have gave me something to consider here as a concept to fly fish from also.
