Aimee was too self deprecatory and seemed really ashamed she was Asian. She was constantly saying her features were small and her face flat. Girl, own your beauty. Don’t apologize for it. It was cringe worthy at times.
Sherry X Asian features are genuinely different. That’s why it’s so hard for us to follow western beauty tutorials, because the structure of our faces is different! We don’t have the same angles, and that’s what she meant. I think if you’re Asian you know what Aimee means, but it sounds harsh if you don’t.
Helena Wang I am Asian and she sounded like a self-loathing Asian to me. There’s a way to say as an Asian American here are my make-up hacks, which she didn’t say. Instead it was like, oh I’m not as pretty as you Rosie bc I’m Asian and I have a flat face. Rosie even tries to interject at some point to stop the constant self-deprecation. It’s a fine line between explaining Asian features and self-loathing but Aimee smacked of low self-confidence/self-hatred, at least how she presented here. Also, who doesn’t wear bronzer/contour just cuz they’re Asian - Claire Marshall (Asian American, just adopted hence Caucasian last name) would totally disagree. It just all seemed like low self confidence to me.
Sherry X I didn’t see it that way, but I see why you did. Either way I think that in the video it’s evident that Aimee and Rosie have very different facial structures, and I’ve heard a lot of my family, friends, and Chinese make up artists talk about flat Asian faces, so I think it may just be a difference in cultural understanding.
Helena Wang - hey, I don’t really think anyone would deny that people of different races have different features. It’s quite self-evident, in my opinion. I also don’t think it’s wrong to talk about having different features. But my point was simply she did it in a way where she acted like her Asian features are a negative. I didnt know who she is prior to this video and don’t know if this is just normal behavior from her, but I can say that there was something in her body language and tone that smacked of self-loathing in this video. I think things depend on context and no one would dispute that Asians have different features. But there is the separate point that you can also be socialized into thinking your features are inferior, and she seemed like that type of person to me.
