Absolutely fantastic tutorial. People don’t always want to accept the responsibilities that go along with properly caring for a pet, but that’s really selfish because if you’re not doing what’s best for the animal, you shouldn’t have it.

My duck was a rescue, they had it in a flat, feeding it cat food!!! It lived in my backyard for a few years, with its own pond, house and heaps of snails, worms & meal worms for a treat now & then 💜 I miss her so much, she was so sweet and gentle 🦆

It still frustrates and infuriates me that so many get sled dogs (Alaskan Malamutes, Siberian Huskies, Russian Samoyeds) only because of their looks. These are working dogs, period. They won't like being cooped up in a cramped apartment 24/7 and will go nuts. And when they go nuts, they chew things up. And when the dumb owner gets upset because the dog got frustrated of being cooped up and chewed up something, they kick them out onto the streets. It makes me mad and I wish dog shelters would make sure the person wanting to adopt one was checked to make sure it won't stuck in a tiny apartment all the time.
As someone who loves all kinds of pets, and would love to have duckies as housemates, I appreciate this. I already knew these things, but I still appreciate it.
Yeah, those Dawn commercials are about cleaning off oil contamination from crude oil spills. They're not advertisements for bathing your pet ducks in it. International Bird Rescue uses the product in their oil spill rescues.

When we were little, Daddy's laundryman gave him 3 chicks and a duck, which Daddy named Ichel, Michel, Pichel, and Quackel, respectively. I tried to play with them in a cardboard box with a white rubber duck, which they were all terrified of. I wanted me and my sister to be allowed to take a bath with the live duck, as opposed to the rubber one, but our parents never allowed that. (I don't think we'd've tried to soap the duck.) Many years later, in view of the mess ducks make, I could understand why. The birds all died, and the rubber duck became Quackel. Only recently did I learn Quackel is an actual German name.
I am German and I never heard or have read the name Quackel through all of my lifetime (that includes the last five decades). Dunno where you picked that up, but no, Quackel is NOT a German name. It's not even a German word, to be precisely.

It's very rare (like, REALLY VERY rare) but it does exist, so I stand corrected (and learned something new :) ). Plus, there is an old german dialekt that used the word "quackeln" to describe something like "talking nonsense". What we DO in Germany though, is using the word "Quack" when describing the sound a duck makes. Like in: Dog goes "woof", cow goes "moo" and duck goes "quack".
These are a few really important things to know when you have a duck. "Wet feather" can be really bad, btw. It prevents the feathers from properly insulating the duck and water gets under ALL the feathers making the duck waterlogged and extremely heavy. The duck can drown from exhaustion or exposure (cold).

Similarly rats are another animal you absolutely CANNOT keep alone. I’m sure there are fluke situations where a rat may have certain medical needs or aggression issues where it’s not an option but yeah. Also don’t forget to quarantine your animals for a few weeks if you didn’t get them at the same time or have other pets!

I always buy wild duck species native to the USA. I found some life hacks when it comes to raising them that's cleaner. If you go with wild ducks- always penion them, and let them wander your backyard. This allows them the illusion of freedom, they think they aren't captive. It's also cleaner. One of the reasons ducks are as messy as they look is because they are cooped up in a pin. The poo builds up, and is hard to clean. Also it ruins the grounds natural ability to drain water, so it becomes permenant mud. Letting them wander your backyard means they can crap in a larger area. It's also easier to clean, just hose it down. It's great fertilizer so you won't have to fertilize your lawn ever again. You must have a decent sized yard pond. For wild ducks a kitty pool won't do. It needs a powerful filter or you can expect to clean the pond every weekend. Feed your ducks turkey food, and mix in chicken scratch and the ducks will love you. A good treat for wild ducks is mint. Plant mint in your yard. Be aware that it will grow over and through everything you've planted. Mint will attract several species of wild bees. I have 5 different species of wild bees that visit my mint. Ducks love worms, bugs, and grubs. If you have a problem with grubs killing your grass, you won't if you get ducks. At night the ducks will go out to hunt for worms by sticking their bills deep into your lawn. With luck they will find a grub or a worm to eat. Watch what you feed them, a duck can starve to death without you noticing it. Because of the shape of their bill northern shovelers cannot eat adult turkey food. You have to get them baby turkey food. You can't have a dog, and ducks at the same time. The dog will kill them. Also a cat will kill smaller ducks like teal. The biggest problem I've had with raising ducks come from predators. My neighborhood has a hawk, and raccoons. You can tell the difference between who killed your ducks by what the body looks like. Hawks make it look like the duck disappeared. If you do find the body it is very clean. It'll have the head, winds, feet intect, but the breast will be eaten. Raccoons will make it look like someone went out they and not only killed all your ducks, but tore them to pieces as well. I put in a motion light, and have two owl decoys set up. So far it's working. The hawk also eats the raccoons in my neighborhood so they can't just do what they want. My problem is with the hawk. Predators WILL always be a problem if you own ducks whether you keep them in a coup or not. Raccoons will have no problem getting in your coup. If you own ducks, guard your heart because you may lose your favorite one to the hawk you thought was cool a year before.
If you get a farm dog (not a herding breed)and raise the dog with the flock, they will not kill them, they might attempt to play with them, which can cause injury, but they will not harm their family, (key being, the dog cannot be YOUR pet, the dog has to be the family of the flock, not you.) raising a dog with the flock will make the dog believe that the flock is its family. My grandparents did this with their mixed flock for many decades and only had issues when the puppies would try to play too harshly, or if the dog was too young to defend the flock against natural predators.

My dog would never eat a duck. He knows the neighbors duck and is kind of scared of it. We have a rabbit that hops freely around the house and sleeps with roofus. He once chased a squirrel inside my house and refused to bite it when he got it cornered. Just wanted to play with it like it was a cat. So yeah, train your dogs better or something.
When I was a little i got two ducklings a boy and a girl. I named them Donald Duck and Daisy Duck Edwards. The first Donald Duck Edwards had a really bad seizure that automatically killed him. So I had to get a new Donald Duck Edwards

good vid... i had 19 bantams ( chickens ) and 4 ducks....... they were the best pets i ever had, but htey were properly looked after and cared for......
i never expected to get my original two actually. it was a surprise and we had to very quickly rush to the store to get everything. Edit: We didn't expect to get them because we found them around 1 or 2 days old with their mother dead and father no where nearby

yeah, what was weird was that when i was a little kid, my dad wanted a dog but i didn't want to get one so quickly because of our lack of research and preparation, while a lot of other kids are the other way around lol

I’m getting 3 duckling!! I’m so excited and I’ve been researching for about a week now. I’m planning on having an enclosed outside and inside. I want them to be inside for a couple days or weeks to just because they’re so tiny that I won’t be able to sleep without knowing if they’re safe. I do have a question tho. I’ve read that chick feed that’s unmedicated is great but can I feed them snacks? Like grapes, leaves, etc.. cause Ik u can but how often or how old :) ty!!!
I have a question Would you recommend a Mallard, Peking or a call duck? O and one more… can I take a baby duck out from under its heat lamp during its 4-6 weeks under it, like can I take it outside for a bit or let it play in a small warm tub of water? And one more… sorry. If I take a baby duck outside (if I can safely) should I make a small jacket for it just to make sure she does not get to cold? I did research before getting my 6 Pekins and you can never do enough. I've had them for 3 months and am still doing research cause there are always new questions. I find though that it's better to find a reputable source of information, someone with years of experience, outside the internet cause so much of it is conflicting, especially when a lot of it is personal blogs. You really don't know if they are experienced or not. In addition I knew they were messy but even though I did lots of research and asked lots of questions one thing that never came up was the level of damage control necessary..... for your property lol. Mine do a lot of free ranging during the day and I no longer have flower beds out back my house and they are working on making my back lawn into a gravel pit. Other than that they're fantastic lol.... and I got 5 more (blue, black and silver swedish).

I got ducklings this year, they are addictive, I started with three, then got another, and another, and two more after that, I love my call ducks and I have a nice big coop for them and my chickens
So if I wanted to get ducks, and outside at night isn’t safe would if be ok if it lived inside but during the day, in summer, I took it out? Also can u recommend food

I'm not sure if you're still reading comments on this 2 years later, but I'm considering getting ducklings and am not sure whether I should get 2 or 3. My family has a pre-existing flock of 5, so would it still be okay to only have 2 assuming they join the flock as adults?
Dawn is used in oil spills because it's also petroleum based and it breaks down grease and oil so well. It was deemed animal safe in spite of how harsh it is and it is in no way gentle enough to be used in a non emergency.
@@goodmaro Ivory soap 60 years ago was probably real soap and not a detergent. Soap is generally more natural (lye and fat) and works by emulsifing. Detergents are surfactants which are lifting agents and suspend the grime in the water so it can't redeposit. Neither are great for the natural oils a duck needs to make or waterproof, but diluted a lot it shouldnt have done any real harm.
@@owlivdejong5086 Ivory soap is still that today. In fact all the major soap bars are. When Dove was introduced, speculation was that all soaps would be replaced by compositions like that, so years later many people assumed that'd already happened, but it never did. Still, the detergents you refer to work the same way as soap -- emulsifying, suspending, lifting...same thing. Dawn is just a little better at it.
@@goodmaro Only Original Ivory Bar soap is soap. All other bars and forms of Ivory are detergents. I would personally disagree that soaps and detergents are the same. The results may be similar, but they're not the same.

I would love to know where to get healthy minnows or tad poles or crawdads. I have one female who struggles with laying... I do kale and healthy treats and also have to administer liquid calcium for her... she struggles with soft eggs or no eggs, and I have to put her in warm bath...help!
i’m doing this whole presentation to convince my parents to get a duck, researching every aspect of owning one. i’m always getting mixed messages for this one question, are they loud? the internet is either like yes or no or kinda. also if their in a shady part of my backyard is that bad for their feathers since they need sunlight? and finally, if they are always in an area with dirt and soil and pretty much just ground like ground, is there a need to cleanup the poop? bc we also have chickens and they just kinda poop all around? sorry i’m super invested in birds rn and want some first hand answers
The loud part I would guess not as much as you'd think. Sure they're probably louder than say, a bunny, or a cat... My guess is they'd be on par with most dogs, if not quieter. I'm trying to think of moments in the wild where I'd watch ducks, and most of the time they weren't making a ton of noise; would depend on their personality as well I guess. Now geese in general would probably be a different story though.
The ladies can be cause they have a loud quack but the boys have a raspy sound, the boys aren't usually loud unless they're worked up or excited over something, even then not sure the sound would travel far, I barely hear it inside my hair with the windows open. The only time I hear my girl is when she wants something... Me to come outside to chill with the crew at their pool, or snacks, etc. She quacks outside the window.

i do not have more than one duck. i have tried it many times but she does not like any animal interaction . do you have any tips for wet feather when i rescued my duck had it i think the last owners washed her with shampoo or dish soap . i had a duck before this one she sadly died and she also didn't like animal intteraction she didn't have wet feather . but i'd like some tips .

It makes the wing grow out from the body when it's folded. Makes wild ducks and geese unable to fly. So if your birds get it you know you screwed up.

So far it's working. The hawk also eats the raccoons in my neighborhood so they can't just do what they want. My problem is with the hawk. Predators WILL always be a problem if you own ducks whether you keep them in a coup or not. Raccoons will have no problem getting in your coup. If you own ducks, guard your heart because you may lose your favorite one to the hawk you thought was cool a year before.
If you get a farm dog (not a herding breed)and raise the dog with the flock, they will not kill them, they might attempt to play with them, which can cause injury, but they will not harm their family, (key being, the dog cannot be YOUR pet, the dog has to be the family of the flock, not you.) raising a dog with the flock will make the dog believe that the flock is its family. My grandparents did this with their mixed flock for many decades and only had issues when the puppies would try to play too harshly, or if the dog was too young to defend the flock against natural predators.

My dog would never eat a duck. He knows the neighbors duck and is kind of scared of it. We have a rabbit that hops freely around the house and sleeps with roofus. He once chased a squirrel inside my house and refused to bite it when he got it cornered. Just wanted to play with it like it was a cat. So yeah, train your dogs better or something.

When I was a little i got two ducklings a boy and a girl. I named them Donald Duck and Daisy Duck Edwards. The first Donald Duck Edwards had a really bad seizure that automatically killed him. So I had to get a new Donald Duck Edwards
I literally own ducks and I searched the whole internet to take care of ducks too , we had lots of information to work on however I feel taking care of ducks needs requirements only you can give by experience I am a 12 yr old who loves you channel and owns 4 ducks myself and they live very happy healthy lives , it would mean so much if THE Dunkin Ducks would subscribe I love both your channel and your ducks btw munchkin is rllly cute and your brown Male looks like My 2 males my females are white like munchkin but have grey patches so they are like snowy ducks I love your channel and your duck thanks for making others aware about this as some people buy ducks don’t know how to take care , get fed up and dump them at a local pond! I’m getting 3 duckling!! I’m so excited and I’ve been researching for about a week now. I’m planning on having an enclosed outside and inside. I want them to be inside for a couple days or weeks to just because they’re so tiny that I won’t be able to sleep without knowing if they’re safe. I do have a question tho. I’ve read that chick feed that’s unmedicated is great but can I feed them snacks? Like grapes, leaves, etc.. cause Ik u can but how often or how old :) ty!!!

Would you recommend a Mallard, Peking or a call duck? O and one more… can I take a baby duck out from under its heat lamp during its 4-6 weeks under it, like can I take it outside for a bit or let it play in a small warm tub of water? And one more… sorry. If I take a baby duck outside (if I can safely) should I make a small jacket for it just to make sure she does not get to cold?

I did research before getting my 6 Pekins and you can never do enough. I've had them for 3 months and am still doing research cause there are always new questions. I find though that it's better to find a reputable source of information, someone with years of experience, outside the internet cause so much of it is conflicting, especially when a lot of it is personal blogs. You really don't know if they are experienced or not. In addition I knew they were messy but even though I did lots of research and asked lots of questions one thing that never came up was the level of damage control necessary..... for your property lol. Mine do a lot of free ranging during the day and I no longer have flower beds out back my house and they are working on making my back lawn into a gravel pit. Other than that they're fantastic lol.... and I got 5 more (blue, black and silver swedish).
So do you take them inside the house in the winter? I live in Florida so it doesn’t snow but it does get cold.

I got ducklings this year, they are addictive, I started with three, then got another, and another, and two more after that, I love my call ducks and I have a nice big coop for them and my chickens
So if I wanted to get ducks, and outside at night isn’t safe would if be ok if it lived inside but during the day, in summer, I took it out? Also can u recommend food

I'm not sure if you're still reading comments on this 2 years later, but I'm considering getting ducklings and am not sure whether I should get 2 or 3. My family has a pre-existing flock of 5, so would it still be okay to only have 2 assuming they join the flock as adults?
Dawn is used in oil spills because it's also petroleum based and it breaks down grease and oil so well. It was deemed animal safe in spite of how harsh it is and it is in no way gentle enough to be used in a non emergency.
Would a cake of Ivory soap floating in the same bathtub with a duck hurt it? I'm trying to project what I wanted to do 60 years ago.
@@goodmaro Ivory soap 60 years ago was probably real soap and not a detergent. Soap is generally more natural (lye and fat) and works by emulsifing. Detergents are surfactants which are lifting agents and suspend the grime in the water so it can't redeposit.
Neither are great for the natural oils a duck needs to make or waterproof, but diluted a lot it shouldnt have done any real harm.
@@owlivdejong5086 Ivory soap is still that today. In fact all the major soap bars are. When Dove was introduced, speculation was that all soaps would be replaced by compositions like that, so years later many people assumed that'd already happened, but it never did. Still, the detergents you refer to work the same way as soap -- emulsifying, suspending, lifting...same thing. Dawn is just a little better at it.

I would personally disagree that soaps and detergents are the same. The results may be similar, but they're not the same.

i’m doing this whole presentation to convince my parents to get a duck, researching every aspect of owning one. i’m always getting mixed messages for this one question, are they loud? the internet is either like yes or no or kinda.
also if their in a shady part of my backyard is that bad for their feathers since they need sunlight?
and finally, if they are always in an area with dirt and soil and pretty much just ground like ground, is there a need to cleanup the poop? bc we also have chickens and they just kinda poop all around?

The loud part I would guess not as much as you'd think. Sure they're probably louder than say, a bunny, or a cat... My guess is they'd be on par with most dogs, if not quieter. I'm trying to think of moments in the wild where I'd watch ducks, and most of the time they weren't making a ton of noise; would depend on their personality as well I guess. Now geese in general would probably be a different story though.

The ladies can be cause they have a loud quack but the boys have a raspy sound, the boys aren't usually loud unless they're worked up or excited over something, even then not sure the sound would travel far, I barely hear it inside my hair with the windows open. The only time I hear my girl is when she wants something... Me to come outside to chill with the crew at their pool, or snacks, etc. She quacks outside the window.

i do not have more than one duck. i have tried it many times but she does not like any animal interaction . do you have any tips for wet feather when i rescued my duck had it i think the last owners washed her with shampoo or dish soap . i had a duck before this one she sadly died and she also didn't like animal intteraction she didn't have wet feather . but i'd like some tips .
