    I really like these paints for fun quick sketches. I've had them for a month and the sticker labels are starting to be hard to read. I made a swatch that fans out like the set (You could do tidy swatches with the stamps!) And that really helped with the samy blues. I chopped up a bunch of bookmarks from watercolor paper and painted a bunch with the waterbrush at a craft fair. It was great for a portable cheap option. I think I like the novelty of it lol;) have a good one!

    A cool set for travelling, esp. for a newbie (like myself) that just wants to practice making 'free form' leaves & flowers. However, I can see where a more experienced painter wouldn't be a huge fan. As I said, for a newbie on a budget, it would be a great set to practice with. TFS!

    About mixing purples. For years, I thought that red was a primary color -- it's what they teach you in school, right? It turns out that red isn't a primary; magenta is. That's why color printers have yellow-cyan-magenta cartridges rather than yellow-blue-red. You can get red by mixing magenta and yellow. You can't mix any other colors to get magenta -- that's what makes it a primary. I was blown away to learn this, but once it's explained it made perfect sense. So the trick to mixing purples that are vibrant is to start with magenta and cyan blue, and the purples you get will be clear and bright and not muddy. The warmer the red you use (i.e. the more yellow it has) the muddier your purples will always be. Talk about a lightbulb moment, for me.

      You are correct but also incorrect. The magenta, cyan etc. are the colors we use in printing. Of you look at any cardboard box with color printing on it, look for a small group of colored circles. They are usually on one of the small, inside flaps. You'll see there is black, white, magenta, cyan and yellow. All printed colors are made up of these colors. This is true of all inks. The primary colors they teach you in school are red, yellow and blue. The reason for the difference is because those 3 primary colors are made of naturally occurring pigments. Natural pigments run from iron oxide and ochre (minerals) to certain fruits and plants and even animals (cochineal beetles). This is something that I believe should be taught in elementary school but, alas, it so rarely discussed that unless you work in a print shop, try to make paints using the methods they used during the renaissance or just happen upon the information, you may go your entire life never knowing this. The more you know....

    • @YunliDeUlrika
      @YunliDeUlrika 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@timmyianni2309 - Yes, CMYB is used in printing because they are *actual* primaries, i.e. colors that cannot be created by mixing, but can be used to create all other colors. So if you use CMYB that is the smallest number of colors necessary to mix to any desired mixed color. Both cyan and magenta require modern chemical processes to create, and tend to produce colors that are less lightfast over time, so it's good to be aware of their properties and limitations. As you suggest, the traditional primaries (RGB) are traditional because they were the closest to actual primaries that could be achieved with naturally occurring pigments, but in the sense that I am talking about, i.e. color mixing to produce a desired color, red is not a primary. A primary is a color that cannot be mixed out of other colors. Red can be created by mixing magenta with a little yellow. That makes red a secondary color. And that yellow component in red will make it impossible to mix a truly vibrant purple using it. Purples mixed out of red and blue will always be a bit muddy. Which was all that I was trying to point out.

    My set is arriving in today's mail! Based on your & Lindsey's observation on the palettes color swatches being paper - I'm thinking of coating mine with a thin layer of Glossy Accents or maybe clear gesso before taking them for a test drive. Also ordered all the WF swatch/color combo sets (I've been so good about buying "tools " for so long - these are my reward - lol) & cant wait to receive those as well. Nina's engineering background really shines on this release.

    I love this set! I first saw it on The Frugal Crafter’s channel and loved how they performed. I really didn’t like the water brush, mainly because the water flow was hard to control. I swapped it for a Pentel Aquash in the slot and it fits perfectly! Lindsey also said she was going to refill used up pans with tube paint, which I thought was genius. Also, there are other colors available, like pastels, on Amazon. Great video!

    I saw the set on Frugal Crafter and put it on my Amazon wishlist. My sweetie's dad gets us stuff from that list from time to time, so I was thrilled to get the watercolour set this morning. I took the set with me to my day job to do a little watercolouring at work during lunch. I like the colours except there aren't any "flash" tones. I'll have to figure out a good mix with these. I agree about the included brush being too big. The brush looks a lot like the inexpensive Mudder set I carry in my purse. I agree, too, about the colour at the hinge. But, for less than $20, it's a very nice set. It will be handy to carry in a purse or other bag. Nice set of stamps. I'll have to put them on my wish list.

    Hi Kristina, Great Product Share! I picked these up a couple weeks ago on Amazon as well. Used them on vacation at the beach and felt like they were pretty nice for travel. I, too have seen a variety of versions of this set and it’s hard to really see who makes them. But, I thought they were a great little on the go, papercrafting and in the journal kind of set. I felt they granulated a bit leaving some nice texture and you can kind of get them to be gouache like. Not sure about how lightfast they are. Couldn’t find anything online. For the price, it’s great for travel and starting to play.

    I have seen this set advertised all over. I thought this was an excellent review. The only thing missing is a lightfast test. It's something few watercolor reviews have. I would have liked to see a second swatch, like the first, left out in direct sunlight for a week or so. Just to see how they hold up. Pricier pro watercolors usually tell you what colors are lightfast, but these cheaper ones don't.

    I'm a bit confused why you think the water brush is too big for these pans. The pans are larger than regular watercolor pans. I would think it easier to use than a reg. sized pan? I think these will be great for on the go. I plan to pick them up very soon. They are in my cart. And I really want to get the stamps. Sooo great. These will make swatching much nicer. TYFS

    Thank you for your honest review, Kristina! What you mentioned about getting a "good" purple is true for all color mixes. There is basically no such thing as a "true" (unbiased) red, blue, or yellow. Reds lean either towards yellow (e.g. Cadmium Red) or blue (e.g. Quinacridone Magenta). Same for blues (lean towards red/purple or yellow/green) and yellows (towards blue/green or red/orange). So, each primary has a warm & a cool version. As a result, if you really want a full range--of both bright & dull color mixes--from just the primaries, you'd need a warm & cool of each primary color. There is a fantastic book by Michael Wilcox called "Blue & Yellow Don't Make Green," that tells all about color mixing, using 6 primary colors. (You can find it at least on Amazon: www.amazon.com/Blue-Yellow-Dont-Make-Green/dp/0891346228/ref=sr_1_1.) It really helped me a lot when I was still painting, & I still use that knowledge when I'm mixing colors to paint images for cards. Anyway, I just thought I'd mention that, in case anyone's interested. Can't wait to see what else you have in store for Watercolor Week! Hope you have a great day! :)

    • @carolmelancon
      @carolmelancon 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes! I learned of this split-primary color theory several years ago with a Schmincke gouache set for calligraphy where they included (and explained) the need for a warm and cool version of each primary to prevent desaturation of mixes. A couple of years ago I heard of Michael Wilcox and bought his color mixing palette (www.michaelwilcoxschoolofcolor.com/product/watercolour-palette/) which I love. He also has a laminated, inexpensive color wheel sheet that you can practice on and wipe clean.

I think these paints are customizable with a brand name by Who ever will be selling them. I've seem these named medeen as well.

    Got mine the other day. Also ordered from Amazon. There are a number of sellers and price points (I chose Meeden for $15.99). I have been pleased so far. As to the waterbrushes, they are an almost exact duplicate to the Jane Davenport (empty)ones that I bought at Michael's. I have had no issues with the brush that was included. There are a couple of minor design flaws with the fan deck (one that keeps you from fanning out all of the trays all the way at once). Some of the colors are very similar to each other. However, this is to be expected with an item at this price point. There is no pigment information, which is a shame, but again not surprising. I will be taking a set of swatches to use for lightfastness, as virtually all of the colors are quite rich, and I will be curious to see how they hold up. They have a set of 48 half pans and tins for $25-30, so that could be an option, as well.Great review!

    They're cheap because they are counterfeits from China. I forget the name of the genuine company because it was some time ago I saw and bought these from Wish😔 While they are not terrible I'm annoyed at myself for buying them because I'd never buy a cheap copy of someones art or products knowingly. Already got stung buying Pigma Microns on EBay that were fake and NOT waterproof 😕
