Pavarotti was a completely emotionless performer in my opinion. How you can listen to this exquisite, expressive and rich voice of Jonas Kaufmann and want to replace it with the football anthem singing, park and bark, Pavarotti completely baffles me.

Kaufmann is brilliant here. Those who say otherwise are amateurs. He is on the deeper side of a tenor's tone, but, he is still a tenor. His voice has that effortless bell-like ring to it that all the great one's have.

Whether you like Kaufmann's voice or find it too covered, ingolato, whatever, this is still great singing. This guy always has a deep connection with his support mechanism and yes, perhaps, darkens his tone a little too artificially and "cheats" certain piano dynamics but please take note of his artistry, his way of completely conscienciously bringing more or less mask resonance in his tones for crescendo effect, etc. This guy knows his voice. He doesn't need you telling him he is a baritone or other useless comments. If he were a baritone, he would not be able to SUSTAIN THE TENOR TESSITURA! Enough with the amateur voice experts!
It isn't about doing the "right" technique; it's about doing the right technique for you. When Kauffman sang Mozart as a lyric, you could tell he was "lightening" his voice which is actually much more artificial for him than what he does now.

Post like these amaze me, Kaufmann's voice is not the "produced voice" of any RECENT tenors, but is a throwback to the "golden age". I would assert he has the most Caruso like voice of any tenors since Caruso, in the same catagory as Mario Del Monaco, Jan Pierce and Jon Vickers - the MANLY tenor, but it's been so long people are confused by his singing.
This is a good example how you can accomplish a convincing and even touching rendition of a difficult aria, even if the whole organisation of your vocal sound production is fundamentally flawed and manipulated. Kaufmann's strength is his great musicality and concentration, united with a great breath controll. On the other hand you have a voice that is artificially darkened and pushed backwards. Of course, dark voices are very fashionable at the moment, so many singers tend to manipulate their instruments towards that 'ideal'. The price is high: An overall throaty sound, piano notes that have no 'core' and sound 'clowdy', high notes that are exciting, yes, but also quite close to a howl. On the other hand we hear have an artist that has something to say, that has - in spite of a vocal organisation that is fundamentally problematic - found a great range of colours. That is more than most singers have.

Yet he remains a professional through-and-through and deserves the acclamation and recognition of his artistic stance and power for what it is, a great life accomplishment he consistently delivers. No wonder we are all thrilled by those "money notes" and the whole package!
The ring, ping, intensity, squillo or whatever you want to call it makes the voice carry and makes the sound exciting. A voice that significantly lacks thus quality tends toward dullness, whatever the singer's virtues. And Kauffmann has a great many: intelligence, imagination, musicality, a strong and appealing stage presence --
First notes I heard him sing, "Ah, he's no tenor; he's a baritone. After a few more phrases, "Wrong, he is a tenor." After some more phrases, "I'm in love!"

Kaufmann's is a marvellous voice. And if I say the other voice it reminds me most of is definitely Sir Thomas Allen's, that is not me stirring; I mean it as a compliment. Why shouldn't people sing from their own true natures, and that work, irrespective of how we want to classify it?

I have this CD Live recording at Teatro alla Scala, August 27-28, 2012, released by Decca in 2013. But I have never played it because it's easier to catch it on computer TH-cam. Especially I like the other version of JK's singing Invemisco alone at LaScala, also under Maestro Barenboium and recorded in 2010. JK is less mature in it but very young and sweet, I like it.
comparto el criterio de turbofreddy. pero sobre todo destaco la interpretación como siempre. realmente sentir lo que dice una pieza como un requiem es además de sublime algo absolutamente raro. no he escuchado nunca un canante lírico cantar las partes correspondientes, en la voz que fuera de un requiem, no solo el de Verdi, poniendole dramatismo y actuación a algo que es absolutamente polifónico. Jonas Kaufmann debe actuar hasta cuando canta en la ducha. es un genio. sabe el sentido de cada palabra, de cada oración, sea de la más ligera de las óperas o de las piezas musicales de repertorio sacro, la verdad no hay palabras para destacar eso. si les gusta los spinto posiblemente juzgarán que es el mejor de todos los tiempos, otros repararán en algun que otro "truco" no académico para enfatizar el sentido de lo que canta. los detractores se lo pierden. los que valoramos lo diferente lo aclamamos.
No confundas la actuación con la sobreactuación y el verismo indiscriminado todo lo que canta y su enorme egolamiento, sus sollozos constantes en todo lo que canta, absolutamente monocorde.

Para unos la voz, para otros la facilidad, el timbre, la claridad del sonido, la uniformidad en toda la extension de la voz, la linea de canto, el gusto musical, la interpretacion del texto, etc. Y esto es lo bueno de este arte. Unos adoran a Kraus y a otros los deja frios. Kaufman es un gran cantante. No se puede dudar. Pero su sonido no es italiano o mejor, latino-maditerraneo. Es un misterio para mi, que cantantes como Rugero Raimondi o Thomas Hampson han podido hacer la carrera que han hecho. No es que no canten decentemente, pero la calidad del sonido, a mi parecer no corresponde al nivel donde cantan. Pero obviamente, estoy equivocado. Asi que si te gusta Kaufman, me parece muy bien. A mi tambien. Con reparos.
pacific lyric Comparto Pacific Lyric, lástima que hay mucho crítico y poco tenor relevante entre los que critican, puesto que lo que para ti y para mi es algo extenso en la apreciación de un arte que como buen arte tiene todos los componentes para que vibre el espíritu del que accede a ella, otros suponen que un totem parado en medio de un escenario, tan frio como un cubito sacado del refrigerador es suficiente y gran cantante si sigue sin separarse un ápice de la técnica. la tan rigurosa y enquilosada técnica que no es otra cosa que el aprendizaje y el ejercicio de un arte en este caso musical. pero la técnica sola hace de un cantante un gran profesor. para que ademas, sea artista debe ser capas de trasmitir y emosionar. caso contrario continuamos admirando a una momia egipcia que canta ópera no un actor y cantante conjugado en una sola persona que, dicho sea de paso, es la base de la interpretación en la lírica.

Kaufmann's is a marvellous voice. And if I say the other voice it reminds me most of is definitely Sir Thomas Allen's, that is not me stirring; I mean it as a compliment. Why shouldn't people sing from their own true natures, and that work, irrespective of how we want to classify it?

I have this CD Live recording at Teatro alla Scala, August 27-28, 2012, released by Decca in 2013. But I have never played it because it's easier to catch it on computer TH-cam. Especially I like the other version of JK's singing Invemisco alone at LaScala, also under Maestro Barenboium and recorded in 2010. JK is less mature in it but very young and sweet, I like it.

comparto el criterio de turbofreddy. pero sobre todo destaco la interpretación como siempre. realmente sentir lo que dice una pieza como un requiem es además de sublime algo absolutamente raro. no he escuchado nunca un canante lírico cantar las partes correspondientes, en la voz que fuera de un requiem, no solo el de Verdi, poniendole dramatismo y actuación a algo que es absolutamente polifónico. Jonas Kaufmann debe actuar hasta cuando canta en la ducha. es un genio. sabe el sentido de cada palabra, de cada oración, sea de la más ligera de las óperas o de las piezas musicales de repertorio sacro, la verdad no hay palabras para destacar eso. si les gusta los spinto posiblemente juzgarán que es el mejor de todos los tiempos, otros repararán en algun que otro "truco" no académico para enfatizar el sentido de lo que canta. los detractores se lo pierden. los que valoramos lo diferente lo aclamamos.
No confundas la actuación con la sobreactuación y el verismo indiscriminado todo lo que canta y su enorme egolamiento, sus sollozos constantes en todo lo que canta, absolutamente monocorde.

Tiago: hay tantas formas de acceder a este arte que cada uno se fija en lo que le "calienta". Para unos la voz, para otros la facilidad, el timbre, la claridad del sonido, la uniformidad en toda la extension de la voz, la linea de canto, el gusto musical, la interpretacion del texto, etc. Y esto es lo bueno de este arte. Unos adoran a Kraus y a otros los deja frios. Kaufman es un gran cantante. No se puede dudar. Pero su sonido no es italiano o mejor, latino-maditerraneo. Es un misterio para mi, que cantantes como Rugero Raimondi o Thomas Hampson han podido hacer la carrera que han hecho. No es que no canten decentemente, pero la calidad del sonido, a mi parecer no corresponde al nivel donde cantan. Pero obviamente, estoy equivocado.
Asi que si te gusta Kaufman, me parece muy bien. A mi tambien. Con reparos.
pacific lyric Comparto Pacific Lyric, lástima que hay mucho crítico y poco tenor relevante entre los que critican, puesto que lo que para ti y para mi es algo extenso en la apreciación de un arte que como buen arte tiene todos los componentes para que vibre el espíritu del que accede a ella, otros suponen que un totem parado en medio de un escenario, tan frio como un cubito sacado del refrigerador es suficiente y gran cantante si sigue sin separarse un ápice de la técnica. la tan rigurosa y enquilosada técnica que no es otra cosa que el aprendizaje y el ejercicio de un arte en este caso musical. pero la técnica sola hace de un cantante un gran profesor. para que ademas, sea artista debe ser capas de trasmitir y emosionar. caso contrario continuamos admirando a una momia egipcia que canta ópera no un actor y cantante conjugado en una sola persona que, dicho sea de paso, es la base de la interpretación en la lírica.
No soy más que aficionada a la ópera, pero me estaría horas viendo y oyendo al gran J.Kaufmann. Que podamos hacerlo muchos años
