Absolutely shocked about Hattons, bought so much stuff from them, quality company. However, if you had to retail some of this Hornby stuff it might be damn hard to make a living. You did your best to be positive Sam, thank you.

Hi Sam. Not sure how you managed it but somehow I think you made their range launch more exciting than they did! I watched it through and yet learnt far more from your presentation. That said they did show Loco#1 as a running sample on their Q&A and it looks amazing.

As far as the E2 goes, there are plenty of actual liveries for it: LBSCR black, BR black, SR green (unless it wore black irl)… if the Beatles thing must continue, put Ringo Starr on a blue E2 with red stripes. wink. Wink. WIIIIINK!!
A BR green L1 is something I’m rather excited for, as is the King Class and the green Class 46. Although a J83 in NBR would’ve been nice to see 😢
No Great Bear, but that’s ok, that means no anticlimactic backflip today either haha
Thanks for doing this, Sam, much appreciated. See you soon!

here's what i think of all these:
2:45 Locomotion No. 1: honestly looks pretty cool, very unusual, but it's quite complex too.
4:24 P2: smoke deflectors look cool, and i also am a P2 guy, so that one's cool.
    5:11 Beetles Train Pack: *no.*
5:43 Jinty Train Pack: coaches look nice, and combined with a BR black engine, it makes a cool train pack.
6:46 Midland Compound Train Pack: I love Midland Railway locomotives, and the coaches look stunning.
9:11 County Class Train Pack: another nice combination, with the GWR green loco, and the GWR brown & cream coaches. also looks nice.
10:35 Beetles 0-6-0: what is that thing.
11:19 Rovex Jinty: why does this actually look half-decent??
12:36 Platinum Jubilee Class 67: this was actually painted on a real Class 67, and honestly, i kinda like it for some reason. i know some people are saying Hornby is trying to milk the Platinum Jubilee in the comments, although considering it is an actual livery, and not like that random HST in the silver that was announced last year, i'm still fine with it. *(please do not argue in the replies ok thanks)*
13:37 HM7000 Class 47: as with any railroad plus model, the decoration looks good, and the sound is a good thing to have.
14:18 HM7000 Class 66: let's just hope that this one doesn't have the crappy wrap like the other Hornby Class 66 that you reviewed...
14:48 BR Green/Black L1's: i'm excited to see these in the range again, they are very cool models. it is a bit on the pricy side of things but it is very cool.
16:06 J83: nice little railroad tank engine, i love that shade of green too.
17:19 King Class: once again, very cool. i love the 4-6-0's.
18:00 Tri-ang Remembered 0-4-0's: cool concept, poorly executed.
20:58 Dublo A4: nice decoration, nice detail, stupidly expensive.
21:17 Britannia Class: another nice BR green locomotive. the Britannia's always look cool.
21:38 Isle of Wight Terrier: the Terriers are always nice to see, the black with red lining and gold text also looks very smart.
22:15 Isle of Wight 4-Wheel Coaches: these will look great with the Terrier, that bright wood looks great, too.
22:42 B1: nice to see it back in the range, but that price is just...
23:33 GWR Express Parcels Railcar: Very interesting livery, i can give it that. the windows at the front make it look cool too.
24:05 Tiger Locomotive: the era 1 stuff always looks cool, and now there are less shoddy coal wagons yay!!... oh wait i spoke too soon.
26:11 Liverpool & Manchester Coal Wagons: what did i just say.
26:33 Liverpool & Manchester 1st Class Rocket Coaches: the separate detail looks good, along with the yellow, although they arent the most accurate.
26:50 Liverpool & Manchester 2nd Class Rocket Coaches: interesting colors, with the brown body, gray roof, and pink curtains. overall looks good though.
27:27 Queen Adelaide's Saloon: the brown and yellow looks nice, and very interesting usage of the black coloring.
28:26 Liverpool & Manchester Royal Mail Coach: looks interesting with the yellow chassis, black body, and the red stripe. also the guy on top is a nice touch.
29:09 Loriot Y with Crane: the Loriot Y's look cool, and the crane is good for adding character to industrial layouts.
30:05 Rovex Open Wagon: once again, just like the Jinty, looks good... for some reason.
31:08 Hornby Office Building: this is honestly a really cool way to celebrate an anniversary.
32:00 Hornby Margate Factory: once again, an interesting way to celebrate an anniversary.
remember guys these are my *personal opinions,* i'm not saying you are now forced to agree with me, i just wanted to write this for fun.

Happy New Year to you and Chloe too Sam. Well, what can we say. From our understanding, the British OO market seems to expect a tsunami of novelties and exciting news in overdrive all the time. Would you rather not have good well thought-out quality and affordable models instead of continuous half-baked things, outdated without much progress and on-going problems? Perhaps H is doing a wise thing for taking a step back, making time to clean-up their house after years of a mess, and to spend time really required to develop a quality model, both in development and production. Introduction of TT was a mess as well with curved track not lining up, missing track pieces in the box and what not... Hopefully, they are on a path of coming back on track.

Excellent video, Sam! 20:00 - When the first TV documentary was made soon after Simon took on the Hornby reigns, there was a scene showing empty shelves where the previous management had scrapped _hundreds_ of toolings - so, yes, it's sadly a very high liklihood indeed the original Nellie tooling is gone.🙁

@@johnd8892 It sounds like a cost cutting measure. Tooling is expensive and it feels like they just repurposed something that was vaguely similar of the original one.

    • @michael32A
      @michael32A 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

Hi @@johnd8892 , sadly as sailormatlac9114 says, while scanning the original would make design work easier, the tooling itself was about £15k per model 5-10 years ago, who knows what it is now, so that's the bit that isn't cost effective for want of just a generic looking 0-4-0T.
I say 'generic': Nellie was loosely based on a tiny ex-LSWR shunter type, class C14, utilising the power unit from LSWR's experimental railmotors, but I mean _loosely_ , as Nellie was maybe 25% bigger than a C14 to house Hornby's ubiquitous HP motor chassis, as used on this model too (I think this is the body off a clockwork driven 0-4-0T Thomas that Hornby made in the 90s?). Not sure how popular it'd be, but a propper C14 would be fun to see in 00!

    • @brlsm9141
      @brlsm9141 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

I would agree with you, but unfortunately, your point cuts both ways as so was the jubilee purple Livery of Taw Valley which they released the model of In the same year of the jubilee.
That's proven they could have released those repaints that year if they planned them properly. Even giving them the benefit of the doubt for perhaps marketing strategy to not devalue the limited edition model or they were struggling to get it out in time, I could maybe understand the following year....
But I have to agree with Sam, only getting around to announcing its release, 2 years after the event wether it could be helped or not. is still a bad marketing blunder because they have well and truly missed the boat that had the jubilee celebration band wagon on to sell to. Plus to some it does have the effect that they are trying milk a cash cow that has long since died from been milked to death...
Evident from how quickly the limited edition sold out at the time, it would have probably generated far more sales from celebration impulse purchases, even if they only offered them as a preorder. But again, didn't seem to cross their minds
Sadly as Sam has shown in many of his monthly news and review videos... This is far from the only oversight or blunder Hornby have made. Especially evident in most of their Era 1 releases over the last 2 years including the titfield thunderbolt/Lion mess...

While there was not much announced this year, I’m glad there are more Railroad models on the way, and I’m glad the B1 and L1 are back. Locomotion No. 1 and the new era 1 stock looks nice as well. I think the prices are a little too high for what most of this stuff is (that being said I think Tiger and Locomotion are semi-reasonably priced), but as sad as it is, I’ve come to expect that these days. Overall, I don’t think this range launch was too bad, especially considering that the new Black 5, streamlined B17, Deltic Prototype, etc, are yet to be released, and Hornby have said their will be more announcements later in the year, so I suppose that will make the lack of new announcements better. I also think in many ways this years announcements were quite smart in a lot of ways, as there was a heavy focus on Railroad steam, which is something we haven’t had much of in recent years, and with prices going up and according to Hattons, demographic changes, it does sound like we need more affordable models on the market. I know this all probably sounds a little soft on Hornby, but I have a feeling there will be a lot of negativity over this, and I feel that it’s important to try and keep things positive.

Airfix have had a few surprise releases in the last few months and it has been successful for them as it gets the sprue social influencers making videos and people going back to their retail website. The annual announcement was really a throwback to the past where trade catalogues had to be prepared and printed and retailers would raise purchase orders for delivery later in the year (the loss of a big customer in Hattons will impact them unless they can make up the difference elsewhere).

I'm really looking forward to Locomotion No.1. I'm also like the look of Mayflower, though the price is giving me doubts, I've pre-ordered it for now, but I might change my mind.
The other thing that really stood out for me with the announcement of several Era 1 coaches in single packs, which will removed something that has been irritating me for a while with the Era 1 train and coach packs; namely ending up with doubles of the 1st Class coaches. I wanted the Queen Adelaide Coach Pack (R40357), but I already had Globe and Wellington from the R3810 Rocket Train Pack, which would have been effectively meant spending £108 on one coach. Now that they going to release Queen Adelaide's Coach separately I won't have that annoyance.
Likewise the announcement of the single packs for the Royal Mail and 2nd Class Coaches means I can get a few more of them without ended up with loads of doubles.
Somewhat disappointed that Hornby are only releasing one new Terrier this year, had hoped they'd do a few more in Improved Engine Green, though the IoWCR one looks nice.
Edit: The 2nd Class Coach is technically not a new announcement since it part of the latest Rocket Train Pack R30090 which was announced last year(?).

Not sure if you saw my comment on the earlier video but the 67 in the Platinum Jubilee livery is actually a real thing, it’s not really a cash grab from hornby or something that hornby just want to slap the jubilee livery on, the real locomotive which is numbered 67007 does carry this livery in service right now and as far as I know it still currently has that livery applied, a few other locomotives also have a platinum jubilee livery applied to them.

I ordered a corgi model of “Stingray” which was officially unveiled today. (That’s the submarine from the show “stingray”) Bit steep, but I love stingray, so I’m excited.

Hatton's leaving us is absolutely heartbreaking. 95% of my entire collection I have ordered from them when I got back into the hobby 2 years ago. I will soon buy my last items from them when pay day comes around. Truly a shame because their service, prices and pre-owned selection is absolutely amazing. For me, the range launch is decent. I'm still waiting for the J36 in BR Apple green which is annoying. The County Class train pack and the B1 Mayflower as preserved are probably ones I will pick up. If I wouldn't have the Bachmann Compound the Midland one from Hornby would be a must for me. A shame the coaches aren't available seperately. They would go perfectly with my fleet. The B1 I want because it's a beautiful preserved loco and it hasn't been available in a few years. I was excited for your news, Sam 👍 first video of 2024

I too got back into the hobby about 2 or 3 years ago, and after getting over the shock at how much stuff now costs, Hatton's was my first port of call. I found their database facility invaluable.
I have their website on a shortcut on all my mobile devices. But I have to say, it's been a while since I purchased anything substantial from them, as they were rarely - if ever - price competitive.

@@stephendavies6949 Yeah, their database is absolutely amazing. It shows all the different versions of a model, upgrades, features and all. Rails or other retailers are missing such an amazing feature. I can keep track of what version of a model I'm buying, if it's an old tender drive one or a modern loco drive one. I used to spend 100£ at least every two months, usually more. Their prices I find quite reasonable, with the occasional question mark.

There was a definitely a ‘Lord Westwood’ style 0-4-0 as I have one ( I think, without checking, that it was in the 1974 catalogue). You are quite right - nice idea but would be far better with the original tooling. They did use it to make some push along ‘toy’ trains in the 1980s so it was around until at least then.

Keep telling Hornby its all great if you like but if you do they won't be around long.

Although the 2024 range is pretty small it needs to be re breed that
    (1) Hornby said months ago that they were moving towards a Bachmann type approach with at leat 2 - 4 big announcements being made throughout the year rather than unveiling everything in January with nothing significant announced for the remains 11 months
    (2) Hornby also still have a lot of stuff from 2023 (and earlier) which hasn’t arrived yet! From a Southern perspective that includes a King Arthur, a Nelson, a M7 and an H class. Granted none of these are new tooling but the point still stands that with these items still yet to arrive, stuffing the January announcements with loads of things that won’t reach the UK till the end of the year isn’t sensible.

Anyone else notice the identity change on the Mayflower announcement? It was originally shown as 61379 but now it is to be the preserved version (61306) - I'm doubting that 61379 ever carried British Railways apple green as it was built in 1951. 61306 was a 1948 built loco and was delivered in apple green though it didn't become 'Mayflower' until it was preserved.

I really don't get "The Beatles" liveries. Seasoned modellers old enough to remember the Beatles will be looking to buy something a little more authentic, and younger modellers will have never heard of The Beatles, or at least not enough of then will be fans of the Fab Four to rush out and buy the stuff in any sort of volumes.

Not surprising Hattons have jacked it in , if theyre being asked to shell out to stock that catalogue of tat. The DB Cargo 67007 in its platinum jubilee colours is used on charters / royal train / belmond pullman & towing class 92s from Crewe to Wembley & back. Why its taken 2 years to get made is anybodies guess , I reworked a Lima 67 into this livery , £55 for the loco , mixed some paint up & £10 for the transfers & then you get why buying Hornby models is just not required.

Those 0-4-0s have given me mixed feelings cause £50 for a brand new engine isn’t bad but like you said they’re not even accurate to their own old models so I don’t know if it’s worth it. Maybe they could be if you want to use it for a custom? I think I saw somewhere that there’s a conversion kit to turn Hornby 0-4-0s into tender engines but the side tanks would be interesting to say the least.
