I would have totally agreed with you about them never finding another to fit. And while Avi left and we all understood it was hard to "imagine" how they could ever replace him. The sad reality is; they couldn't. HOWEVER, Matt has made his own place and fit a hole which none of us would have known was there. He stands out and melts into their harmonies so beautifully. It's been incredible to watch how they've grown

  • @jamesensley3906

There has been one member change with this group. Their original bass guy Avi left during 2017, and has been replaced by Matt. I believe Avi actually was involved in bringing Matt into the band and it has worked out well.

Going along with what you said, I think that while Avi is missed, Matt compliments the others just as much just in different ways. They obviously took the time to choose someone who would work well with them and it payed off.

If you dont already know this, heres a little backstory for you :)
The Members are Scott (baritone), Mitch (tenor), Kirstie (mezzo-soprano), Kevin (beatbox), Matt (bass since 2017), Avi (bass 2011-2017)
They won The Sing-Off ( an acapella competition show) in 2011 and have since then released many Eps and Albums ( covers and originals), toured the world, won three grammys and basically become the most famous modern acapella band there is :D
a few amazing covers they did (and they did a looot) are:
shallow, can you feel the love tonight, the sound of silence, come along, blinding lights (its from their brand new ep and the mv comes out tomorrow), waving through a window, and also their evolutions of rihanna and ariana grande ( these are all relatively new and with matt)
if you want to check out more of their "older" stuff (with Avi):
hallelujah, sing (an original), rather be, cheerleader , daft punk (they won their first grammy for that arrangement)

The names of the members are Scott (Tall Blond), Mitch (Earring guy), Kirstin (Girl), Kevin (Beat Boxer), and Avi (Bass), Avi left the group in 2017 and was replaced by Matt in subsequent PTX videos. The "Trio", Scott, Mitch, and Kirstin have known each other since early childhood. The sang together in Community Theater and High School Choir. Kevin and Avi were added in 2011 when they all formed Pentatonix. They competed on the NBC TV show, "The Sing off". They won that year and went on to become You Tube sensations. They have sold millions of records and have won 3 Grammy's (So far). They have 9 years worth of material that will continue to "blow you away". I look forward to sharing you PTX journey with you. Even a cheap $20 pair will work.

You are NOT a Pentatonix fan....you're now a "PENTAHOLIC". It usually takes 1 maybe 2 songs to become one. I'm sure other pentaholics have made a host of different recommendations, but I though you might find some background useful. In case you didn't get the reference, the signs they held up in IMAGINE identified each of them as Mitch & Scott are gay, Avi is Jewish, Kevin obviously black and Christian, and Kirstie is Latina...the setup was great. Scott, Mitch and Kirstie became friends in their early teens and were members of their high school Acapella choir (at graduation, they performed Lady Gaga's Telephone...check that out). After graduation, Scott went to USC and Kirstie went to University of Tulsa(?), then a year later (they were all 19, Scott wanted to perform on a TV Show (Sing Off, an acapella competition), he called Mitch and Kirstie to join him. Then a close friend of Scott recommended that they should add a bass singer (suggesting Avi, who was 21), and a beat-boxer, who could add percussion sounds. Scott found Kevin (22) on the internet who was also a classically trained cellist (p.s. also accepted into Yale's medical school and even learned to speak Mandarin). Amazingly, Avi and Kevin joined them just one day before their first performance on the show. BTW, they collectively do all their own arrangements. Five INCREDIBLY talents, who could easily be successful on their own...and have done solo gigs...Mitch & Scott under "Super Fruits"; Kirstie has done Broadway and Disney stuff, plus singles on her own; Kevin has his own channel (check out Kevin Olusola videos of "Down" and Harry Stiles "Sign of the Times); Avi sadly left after 7 years, because his mother was fighting cancer and their constant traveling and world tours was to challenging for him. He started his separate career when she recovered (check out his "Change on the Rise"). Matt Sallee replaced him in late 2017 and has fit in wonderfully...check out Sound of Silence. It's amazing that any group can collect together where each one has insane talent. To this day, ALL of them remain super friends and are truly down to earth in spending time with each other. They have revolutionized the music industry for acapella groups. You will have weeks and months to discover their greatness !! As you go through their videos, you will see that they all dress individually and colorful, AND change their looks (mostly Mitch)...hair cuts & colors, beards no beards, makeup, weight loss, etc. ENJOY !!

Good reaction! Speechless is a pretty normal reaction. In case no one has mentioned it, they sound exactly the same live as they do in their videos. Generally they use microphones to balance their voices and that's it. Everything else comes from them. There are some videos of them singing without microphones and they sound the same.
I suggest you listen to Bohemian Rhapsody or Imagine with headphones or even ear buds (but headphones are better). You'll hear the difference unless you have reference speakers.
Hint. If you move to the left while you watch, there is more room on the right side of the screen for the video. I'm glad you switched the video to where your eyes are looking. After watching, you can move back to center.

A great one with Kirstie as lead is their original called Water, written by Kirstie & Kevin. It's one of 3 originals (plus Evolution of Michael Jackson) they performed live at Popspring in Japan a few years ago.
Also Kirstie does great lead parts in their covers of Say Something & Shallow.

No, no,no, you're not speechless (yet), just in the quiet absorption phase. Now that you've done the 'easy' stuff, trip on over to 'the garage' and listen to The Sound of Silence. If you're not familiar with the lyrics, keep in mind that Paul Simon wrote it (1964) when the country was 'very noisy' with the Civil Rights marches and Viet Nam and all. He seems to say that with all that 'noise' people have stopped speaking of listening to each other, and that makes loving each other that much more difficult. That time feels sort of familiar today. Hope you like it.

Just in case you missed it, the words weren't just showing different people/religions etc. It was about each of them, and the word they passed on was what they had in common (makes it that much more emotional).

You are right about their blend being unique... Avi (the bass with the awesome dark beard) left a few years back and they replaced him with a new bass named Matt... Their sound is just as amazing, but it has changed forever... BTW Avi (the bass) opened this singing MUCH higher... Scott covered the bass end while Avi sings upper end. They do amazing covers, but I will suggest one of their many originals. You need to see their video "Sing".... It will lift you out of a low mood, or take a good mood and make it explode! Welcome to Pentaholics.

FYI. If you look at videos prior to early 2018, you’ll see Avi Kaplan (beard) singing bass. He left the group at the end of their tour in 2017. The pace of rehearsing-recording-touring got to be too much. His mother was ill, and he had a tough time being away so much. Kirstie explained PTX rehearsals last many many many hours, because they not only have to learn the vocals, but they have to settle on the sound effects. Avi left on excellent terms, and he helped them with their choice of their new bass, Matt Sallee. Matt joined PTX on their Christmas tour in 2017, and officially became the bass in January 2018. He brings a whole different vibe to their sound-still great, but clearly different. You should also be aware Mitch (on the left in this video) is a chameleon. He’s lost weight over the years, and changes his hair A LOT. Kirstin(Kirstie) changes her hair frequently also. Without a doubt, they’ve changed and matured. They’ve been a group since 2011, and the maturity really shows now. And by the way. They’ve won THREE Grammys: for vocal arrangement for their “Daft Punk Medley” and their rendition of “Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy”, and for vocal performance for their collaboration with DOLLY PARTON on a cover of her classic, “Jolene”. Every album of PTX has landed in the top 30 on the Billboard 200, and their Christmas album, “A Pentatonix Christmas” is one of the biggest selling Christmas albums OF ALL TIME. Not too shabby for a group that was initially dropped by their record label (learn their history. Fascinating story!)!

React to If I Ever Fall In Love cover by Pentatonix with Jason Derulo or Jolene where they sang with Dolly Parton. You'll see how they highlight another person but still shine in the song.
Fact: Their Jolene cover with Dolly Parton gave their 3rd Grammy. 1st was for their Daft Punk Medley and 2nd for Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy.

Great reaction! I’m a big Kirstie (the girl) fan, too. She has a rich voice, great breath control and perfect placement in everything she sings. Say Something, Rather Be and Shallow are three songs that really showcase her talent. She also has a prominent part in Hallelujah, which is their most watched TH-cam video (550 million views). The Trio is Kirstie, Scott (blond baritone) and Mitch (counter-tenor) who were friends from a young age. They added Avi (bass) and Kevin (beat boxer) so they could compete on Season 3 of the Sing Off, which they won as a brand new group. Since then they have won 3 Grammys, put out multiple Platinum-selling albums and tour world-wide to sold out arenas. Avi left at the end of 2017 because the touring schedule kept him away from his family too much. He helped them find his replacement, Matt. Enjoy getting to know them.

No word about the message? Their notes couldn't really be missed, did they? The variety in the group? Different religions, different identities, different origins and all. And they're all human in the end. Wow, I can't believe that there is a review of that song that doesn't spend a single sentence on that.
