    "Logo design is a lot about proving something doesn't work" I really like that idea, rather than trying to get it perfect the first time, just getting ideas out and then eliminating them. Love your videos!

    Hi Will, really enjoyed watching the physical process of how your mind works throughout these hefty artboard illustrator files!
    The commentary is on point as always.
    One thing I would have preferred to see however, is the nitty gritty 'amount of work' that we don't see that goes into the final process; how you size up the ovals for the text underneath and on top, how your grid system is applied. I believe - for me at least - that information would be so much more valuable.
    Keep working hard Will, look forward to the next one.

    I like how passionate you are while explaining your workflow. I also learned that we have a similar workflow. I don't feel so weird for having sooo many alternates to an idea for a commissioned piece. Thanks for uploading as always.

    So at which points do the clients actually view your ideas? I have found that if I show them too early in the stage or every logo idea I have, they get confused and change their mind a million times. Do you pick out your best ones and do a round? I typically would choose 2-3 concepts, then 2-3 iterations of the chosen concept, and maybe once more to get it finalized..

    • @breppbrepp
      @breppbrepp 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      ProlificBanana Show it when you almost finalized a direction. That way it's not to early and the client can choose if he wants to continue in that direction

    • @regiebariuan
      @regiebariuan 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I am also curious to know this because he mentioned that there were certain directions that were decided with the client. When do you decide that it's okay to show a certain iteration?

    • @chloele6620
      @chloele6620 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Stick to one or two concepts in the beginning. Never give them too much otherwise the paradox of choice sets in for them and it seems like you're not confident in any direction. Second make sure you can sell the direction you are going in. You are the one with the expertise. If you know how to sell your work and give them an idea on why that direction would benefit them then you are setting yourself up for success. If they still aren't sold then you need to either spend more time listening or deciding if this will turn into revision hell and cut your losses.

    • @rioreason
      @rioreason 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      ProlificBanana I think it hugely depends on 1, the type of art, 2, the specific job, 3, the client, and of course the artist.
      Generally I use mood boards and an in-depth conversation to get started like he does (bear in mind I work in a completely different field than he does).
      The client will often ask for something that you know won’t work. I get that out of the way with a quick, unfinished draft of what their version might look like, just to give them an idea of why it would t work, but I don’t show that until I also have two or more ideas that could work. I make edits based on that meeting, and then hold one more meeting to either present the finished piece, or offer one more set of edits, MAYBE two depending, but that usually calls for another bill. That may sound harsh, but I do extremely detailed work that is very far removed from logo design.

    Great videos you have available and I had a question to a problem I am encountering for the first time and I am not quite sure how to address this or go about it. Being you have a ton of experience I was hoping you could possible give me some advice. I have a client that wants me to do their logo however the company name is extremely long. The company name consists of three words. First word with 6 letters. Second word with 4 letters and the third and last word of their company name consists of 11 letters. In edition they like to add an insect and it will end up on small labels of food containers. Obviously my biggest problem from the start is making that all fit knowing they will be using it on tiny labels. Any suggestions? Much appreciate your thoughts.

    I have a question. When you design a logo, is it better to put the name of the group/company/brand under the logo? On it? Or just don't put it?
    Because I found like, two choices :
    - If the logo is a symbol, it's better if you put the name somewhere so that he knows the name and can then figure out why was this symbol like this etc...
    - If the logo is the name then it's not useful to put it again.
    But is it like this? Or do you have some precise criteria in order to put it or not?

    Super valuable insight! Do you make your logos pixel perfect? I mean making every point snap to the grid since in icon design it is super important for proper scaling, how important do you think it is for logo design?

    • @erikrusso9808
      @erikrusso9808 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It's very important, because otherwise it might look off if the client wants to print the work on a larger scale

    •  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for your answer, but that's not exactly what I meant. If you scale up something than anti-aliasing is not a problem but if you scale down a lot of things might become blurry. I was asking this because I notice that Will had some things measuring half pixels throughout the video (example: 406.3 px).

    (URGENT) I have a pretty dumb question about font license. The thing is there is a font (Chocolate Bos by Paul Lloyd) and I wanna get its commercial license. But nowhere except Myfonts says it's for sale. Even when I downloaded it there isn't any readme attached document to be read. Do I have to buy it from Myfonts or just leave it? I'm thinking of finding a way to contact Mr. Lloyd though.
    And do I have to buy commercial license of Myriad Pro which is one that is already in AI since the beginning?
    Really appreciate your advices. Thanks!

    I am graphic designer and I struggle a lot that at what point I need to stop exploring. I sketch, I come up with options and then spend a lot of time on softwares making them geometrically correct. But in contrary, there are times when I had to come up with logo at a short duration (a day or two) and I end up with logos without any exploration just with short brief and give my client a logo that looks aesthetically pleasing but somewhere in my mind I regret that I could had given better if had been given bit more amount of time. Please help and guide.

    The Second thing I am struggling a lot is the use of small size fonts in logo - It looks good when compliment with Bold fonts. But I am facing problem due to the limitation of their uses. It looks good on Stationary and Collaterals. But as soon as you use them on some hoarding or in some other print media it merger at times or doest even come on prints. Please help in choosing the type of font to be used that will be versatile when used at any platform and ate any resized size.

    HEY ! Youre such an amazing designer guy ;D I have a doubt, what if I'm using a PAID font on the logo design? Should I just outline and put the letters on the Logo Guide (that document we must do about the color rules and sizes and grid..). I'm always concerned about this.. That's why I always choose a free font, to avoid troubles, but they don't look so nice ;( Thanks very much, keep going on the nice work ;D

      Andressa Lima just always look at their acceptable use policy, I mean even free ones sometimes don't allow for logo design so just make sure of that. But the safest option is to look at a free or a paid logo and edit or modify it to avoid copyright rules and to give it your touch,

      Really depends on what kind of terms the creator of the font has put on it. If it says that you're not even allowed to modify it than no I guess. But the most importent thing is to never give the actual font to the cliënt which is illegal! Always make sure that you've outlined or expanded the text that's used in the logo. This will save you trouble. But if you want to have no risk at all than purchase for every font a commercial license (if needed).
