Awesome review. I'll try not give away too many spoilers even though the series aired a while ago. If you haven't watched it.. please Stop Here... Last evening, my husband and I tuned into this series. I watched the first four episodes then I listened to it while preparing our dinner. I didn't want to pause it bc I wasn't a big fan of chess as my husband is. He watched all seven episodes. I empathized with Beth's character. I also empathized with her black friend Jolene bc I was raised in Louisville KY in the time of Jim Crow. Beth was eventually adopted by a suburban couple. Sadly the adoptive mother was somewhat like her mom, as unhappy or stuck in her marriage however opportunistic, had a substance abuse problem and a racist streak inside her. Those were the times. Unfortunately, Jolene didn't get adopted but she gained an education in the orphanage which prepared her for college and hopes of becoming a lawyer. I was glad that Beth and Jolene had bonded and I looked forward to them reuniting. Fast forward, watched the last two episodes and I came away with a greater appreciation of chess, the importance of having like-minded friends especially those with people who don't look like you. It was an excellent limited series and I'm sure it will be considered for an award. The soundtrack was fantastic. Thank you for sharing your experience and your perspectives on film in general. 12:18 Why do people, no matter where, blame the locale? "This country"? There were other nations where science had not progressed to today's understanding and prescriptions were used with the knowledge of the day. The fault does not lie in "this country." However, non-scientific or medical personnel were involved in decision making. Their authority was from their government... Got that off my chest. A minor (and very trivial) point: I don't think Elizabeth was still 9 when she overdosed. Some time had passed, but I doubt much more than a couple of years. Thanks for sharing. Dude, they had you drugged up good! Not being from the US but having read about your psych evaluatuions, the whole Idea of being "institutionalised" sounds scary AF.
