Beautiful work as always, sir. And as the saying goes "If you ain't cheating, you ain't trying." Truly, it's planning ahead, not cheating, and more of us need to do that.
Looks amazing, I've been very apprehensive about doing osl but after watching this video I might give it a go. And I love your painting style too, keep it up!
This inpired me to try ambient osl, have fun with the process and let myself to not be afraid to fail. Taking those cheat sheet photos now. Thanks Alex.
Yes pvc miniatures have a release agent to clean off. And sometimes they are molded in parts but assembled at the factory to get games playable out of the box.
Those are grand miniatures, and that double OSL is impressive. I still struggle with base coats. Awesome as always, hope you paint and at least show us the rest in the future. Cheers!
Looks amazing as usual, one day I would like to move away from army painting and painting something just because it looks good, put my all into one miniature like this.
6:19 The problem with using a airbrush for OSL is that you usually can't spray from the light source that is on the model, so we tend to spray paint where the light would not be able to travel to.
Awesome video as always. The only thing I would like to see is a sort of summary/recap at the end of the video, of the steps taken in your processes. Since they seem rather nice and approachable, but hard to remember everything since you have a lot of "pleasant chit chat" in between the steps. For example "Step 1: Photograph miniature with light source (show this). Step 2: Print photos. etc. etc."
Awesome video as usual, and was pleased to see this for a game I'd already backed! Are you able to share which paintbrush you used for this? I can never get the point to look that sharp.
Might I suggest a video on the topic of "Why am I not improving?"? Totally asking for a friend here. I am DEFINETELY not frustrated at an attempt at wetblending yellow and red or shading orange with a purple glaze. Anybody who suggests differently is a heretic.
Perhaps it is that as you improve, your expectations go up, and your aptitude for spotting mistakes improves too, I'd check my first minis if I were you, and then the newer one's, if you still feel like you aren't improving, don't worry, we'll all get good eventually And even then, there'll always be someone that will be amazed by the level you're at right now, better look on the bright side!
Ah, tricky C! I think my big theme when it comes to this hobby is "am I having fun?". Improving seems to has come as a bi-product. Mainly because of my experimentation I think. If improving is important to you, as in not improving is making things less fun, I'd recommend, once possible to see if you can find some courses or workshops - not online but in real life.
There is nothing wrong with finding your personal skill ceiling: geekandsundry.com/miniature-painting-101-finding-your-personal-painting-ceiling/ I've accepted (or continue to put work into accepting) that i'm not and never will be a great painter, happy in the "it looks ok on the table from a few feet away" level of ability, but am now trying to focus on efficiency; reducing steps, making each coat do multiple things etc.
Take Your time bro! I've got the same problem! Wet blending for me works only 'sometimes', but I've tried glazing, takes more time but it is a game changer.
Who is your cinematographer/camera person? I feel like they deserve a big shout out for the great work they're putting in. I know it's DSLR but do you have a background in film production?
I'm me, that is.. it's just me doing everything. So the shout out goes to me :) And yes, I'm a photographer by trade. To be picky, it's a small cinema camera, not that it matters. Although I'd like to see the pocket it's supposed to fit into.
@@52Miniatures but the camera moves when you're on screen... You haven't got a mechanical dolly or something do you? And that's mad, I just assumed it was DSLR. clearly I'm not up to snuff on my camera witchery. 😅
@@markhanson9508 yep! That's the ticket. It's a gimbal thing with simple focus and dolly functions. Now you can build up a mental image - every single shot you see starts with me pressing lots of buttons, running fast as h--l, turning around, then walking casually back as if nothing happened. Hope I haven't ruined everything 😂
Beautiful =O For the cheating feeling, I would feel the same, but with a fully stuffed day and just a little bit of time per week for the hobby cheating (for me) is a must. I could have cheated with a unit of skeletons which I am working on since february and it just takes to long because I wanted to do it the...regular way.
Just saw the video very inspiring. Can you give us a few words on you airbrush compressor? I am on the market for a tiny one and I previously hesitated that it wouldn't be strong enough PSi wise
I now have a larger compressor, with a tank. My former compressor did not have a tank, so it was smaller. But it also means the compressor runs constantly. There was never any psi issues. With miniatures, usually very low psi works well for me and my work.
@@52Miniatures living in an apartment in Sweden I value space more than a tank 😂 Good to know, the compressor is a make or break deal in the airbrush question
I wonder if it would have been easier or harder if you had used separate photos for each of the two lights. Or indeed if you'd gone to the effort of illuminating the model with lights of radically different colours (say red and blue) so you could use image processing tricks to see the effect of one or both at the same time. Hm, as they say. Always excellent, of course!
Anything goes really :) For me personally, trying to set the lights in the same photo - i.e in real life gave me a good understanding of how the two sides corresponded with each other. Colors could be great, but might also trick me into painting colours "I don't want". For me a loose sketch is preferred... letting imagination take over while painting. Thanks Stephen!
@@52Miniatures Mm, I think I didn't explain properly: my idea was that if you used red and blue filters on your spots, then hauled the image into a basic photo editor, you could print the photo as black and white and get the same result as now, but you could also print just the red channel (as b/w) or just the blue channel (as b/w) and get the lights in isolation. I mean, in a perfect world you'd also have the ambient light be green so you could see the dark part more clearly, but that's obviously more fuss…. Anyway, I was just thinking you could isolate the lights in postprocessing so the alignments and composition remain true. Of course, if those aren't the tools you have handy, it's a hassle.
@@stephenspackman5573 Ah I get it. I think it would be a very good idea of something like a NMM. Like, what happens to colours when they mix. A blue sky vs green reflections from a grassy surface and so on..
Surely a quick squirt from an airbrush with your chosen colours/directions would have been a lot quicker and easier than all that buggering about with cameras, lights, printer etc? Gotta get those viewing minutes up somehow, I suppose 😉
