    Hopefully you see this I know it was a while ago but I need to know what filler rod you used to do the first pass when you tig welded it

    What filler rod did you use for the first pass?

    Good work!! Question, what did you do with the front axels?

    • @stevenstiles1
      @stevenstiles1  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thanks! Sorry didn't see your comment, you can leave them in if you'd like, which would make swapping back to AWD easier. If you know for sure you want to keep it rwd you can pull the axles and steal the end off and stick it back in the hub so that the wheel bearing is supported.

    does this work with a 2001 inpreza rx

  • @harrylockhart7709
    @harrylockhart7709 ปีที่แล้ว

    Is this really the only thing you need to do? I know nothing about transmissions but do you not have to touch the front end at all?

    • @stevenstiles1
      @stevenstiles1  ปีที่แล้ว

      In Subaru transmissions the front and center differentials are both located in the trans, so this is all the front end work you need to do. The front axles do not need to be pulled as they are no longer receiving power and actually the axle stubs inside of the front hubs support the bearings.

    can i use center diff spool from NA 5spd subaru transmission to my 2014 wrx?

    • @stevenstiles1
      @stevenstiles1  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      will work as long as the spline count is the same, but if it's a lower mileage trans in a newer car might be worth it to play it safe and just buy a spool for a couple hundred bucks

  • @joel_p7133
    @joel_p7133 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Is it the same process for a Subaru impreza wagon 98?
    Should I only weld the center differential?

    • @stevenstiles1
      @stevenstiles1  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      If it's a 1:1 center diff it will work, you can weld the rear too if you want but you'll be breaking rear axles more often

      @@stevenstiles1 thank you very much for the information friend

    @butwhole9704 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    You just pull the front diff out and leave it out to save weight since it's no longer being used? I'm planning on rwd converting a 5 speed, and will likely just saw off the ends of the CV axles for the wheel hub, and the trans to prevent any leakage.

    • @stevenstiles1
      @stevenstiles1  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I didn't bother splitting the case since I didn't even drop the trans, seems like a lot of work for not a whole lot of weight reduction, the axles do come apart real easy for saving the stubs though.

    Lookin to swap my sf forester this weekend, how did it hold up and what broke other than axles long term

    • @stevenstiles1
      @stevenstiles1  ปีที่แล้ว

      Held up for as long as I had the car, bought it with a blown HG and was destined for part out. I never had any issues but RWD guys will tell you that the axles are the #1 weak point and then the R160 rear diff is #2.

  • @chawieneedshuhn3621
    @chawieneedshuhn3621 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I’ve been considering this for a while now, but been a bit hesitant of doing so because I’ve heard that it’s very easy to blow the diff, centre diff and snap axles. Just curious on how it’s held up and if you’ve done a lot of skids with it?
    Awesome content btw 😳😳

    • @stevenstiles1
      @stevenstiles1  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The clutch went out before the center diff or popping a single axle, the axles are definitely the weak point in this combo though if you've got solid welds. Made my money back on the entire car parting it out after selling just the motor so it's gone now, but I had a lot of good skids/ fun times romping it before it died. If you're not beating the absolute crap out of the car every day I'd say just do it. Thanks very much!

      It's the same kind of multi disc center diff but if there's already a rwd version of your car why not just sell it and buy the rwd

    I have a serious question though.
    Why would you want to take away a Subarus amazing AWD system? What's the purpose? It seems kind of crazy to me because I'm in love with AWD.

    • @stevenstiles1
      @stevenstiles1  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      At the time I had multiple other AWD subarus and I just wanted a RWD car but it was nice that parts swapped over and I already knew how to work on it. Plus it was just a $500 car

    So how is this still holding up for you ? And can you do this to an automatic ?

    • @stevenstiles1
      @stevenstiles1  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      HG and clutch went out on the car and since it was a $500 beater I just decided to part it out so don't really know how long it would have lasted. Depends on clutch vs mechanical C diff but I wouldn't bother with the auto, clutch kicks are necessary when you're only making 160 something crank hp and your shift points would probably be messed up.

      late to the party but "watanabe service" make a cente diff delete for the autos. They actually make them for all subarus (and a few evos) they also do front diff delete (axels etc)
