    Conclusion = The Jazz guys could blow the Rock / Metal guys out of the park, for technique and especially musicianship. I say this as a huge Metal fan loving the artists that the Jazz guys influenced. Best guitarist of all time Allan Holdsworth. A total one off and the one all the world class guitarists worshipped and still do.

    • @EgoShredder
      @EgoShredder ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@SeattleMartin Not trying to be pedantic or anything, but Allan is more influential than you might think.....even in other genres. Did you not see the HUGE list of guitarists paying their respects in 2017? Have you not seen the numerous magazine interviews with other guitarists over the decades, who mention Allan? Many of these are real life interactions they had with him, not merely casual comments with no substance etc.

    • @EgoShredder
      @EgoShredder ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@SeattleMartin I would say what you call over playing in this instance, is actually long form melody, which is deeper, explorative, more spiritually profound and more complex than what regular genres offer. Benson is an excellent musician and worthy of respect. However Allan was leagues ahead of most people in the composition and melody stakes, and on his own planet so to speak.
      I went through a few years where I became very depressed and disillusioned with my entire music collection, because Allan's music made my collection seem infantile and basic, and I have a lot of Jazz, Classical, Prog Rock and others etc, many featuring world class musicians. It took me a long time to readjust to listening to my old music again.

    • @EgoShredder
      @EgoShredder ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SeattleMartin Good reply. Who knows maybe I will follow suit in time; I am 51 so still time yet, before I hang up my music boots. I sometimes listen to very simple music occasionally, just for fun or as a break from the complex stuff. I'm just glad we have such a wealth of music to draw upon.

    That's a no brainer. John McLaughlin's staccato. And his great understanding of jazz-lines . Holdsworth next to him, in the 8-tees and 9-tees in particular. And then second comes the rest, pulling off fast boring blues lines, or getting lost in their speed going nowhere. The others, Akkerman, Lukather and Gary Moore especially , were great all good players though.

      Oh yes... And I get why Randy isn't on here because he broke with Ozzy in 1980 but he could be on here too. But then again maybe he didn't shred with Quiet Riot? Uli was never that fast but influenced others. Steve Howe is missing. Alvin Lee gets left off of these lists a lot too. Danny Gatton should be on here as his first solo recording was in 1978, Redneck Jazz. And many of those Coullntry guitarists could shred too but many started in the 60s... lol

    Allan Holdsworth is just unreal, an alien on guitar. Decades ahead of his time, so much so that still to this day nobody has caught up to him.
    What blows my mind about Holdsworth was that from the moment he picked up the guitar to the day he passed in his 70s, he still wasn’t content with his playing and forever pushed himself to innovate. Ever-evolving in a way that few if any guitar players have ever matched.
    Technique, harmonic language, phrasing, tone, improvisation and composition. He had it all, and never compromised on his artistic vision. One of the greatest musicians of all time

    Al Di Meola is tops for me of the video clips provided in this list of shredders. I love his music and not just how fast he can play. I never saw or knew about Shawn Lane before. Very impressive young dude. Everyone else was familiar. I think Johnny Winter was a monster blues guitar player who was killing it in the 1970's doing many arena and stadium shows, he probably should be on this list. Certainly more musical than a number of the shredders on this list.

    Ahhh, the eel-fingers themselves. For me it’s Blackmore. Not because of sheer proficiency, though he clearly could shred with anyone… but because his phrasing was so distinctive. And also because without him, there’s likely no EVH or any of the neoclassical guys (Malmsteen etc) as we know them. Incidentally, a young Dave Edmunds would also be appropriate to include in this list.
