      Spam isn't bad but you definitely need to cook it first. Also beware that it has a very high sodium content unless you get the low sodium variety.
      As far as cooking it goes there's not really much to say. The easiest way of cooking it is probably searing a 3 to 5 mm slice in a skillet over a medium low heat on both sides until you have a golden brown sear.

      @prototype23a18 2 ปีที่แล้ว +36

      Cut it into slices in the can, then cook the patties and eat it with a lot of rice, potatoes or with bread. A little bit of it goes a long way, but maaaaan if it isn't delicious.

    I love how in Korea they give food as gifts. Like designer fruit. It’s such a good gift.

    • @yunahnam
      @yunahnam 2 ปีที่แล้ว +69

      It's a decent gift because its versatile enough, enjoyed by most especially kids, and is shelf-stable unlike fruit especially during a holiday which is for food. Chuseok is like Korea's Thanksgiving and families usually cook a lot of food. If a family only receives boxes of fruits, they wont be able to go through them all on top of all the other holiday food. So a gift of spam is pretty considerate.

    Look, I entered a spam ice cream eating contest in Oregon. It was my first time eating spam and all I was told is that it was meat. Within seconds of starting I could see many people gagging from the raw smell alone mixed with the ice cream. A few seconds later many started to throw up, I was among the only 3 that continued eating until the winner was decided. After that I didn't eat spam for a while until I went to an all boys camp and we went on a 5 day hike in the mountains. At that point anything can taste good. Hell the first night we had chilli with cut up hot dogs and ramen mixed into a pot. To this day it is the best meal I've ever had and would request it as my last meal if I was on death row

    Spam is pork, water, salt, potato starch, sugar, and sodium nitrate.
    “In World War II, the U.S. bought 150 million pounds of Spam. It was the only meat that could last the long boat trips to Hawaii and Guam. And while the U.S. troops grew to dislike the meat, spreading this sentiment back home, the tradition of eating Spam in took off in Japan and Hawaii. During the Korean War, Spam was introduced to the country by the U.S. soldiers stationed there and is still very popular.”

    I've always found it endearing that even though meat isn't scarce anymore it's often referred to as though it's special or a treat (meat in general, not just spam). And spam is like a special part of that. It sorta feels like it reflects a continued mindset of not taking meat for granted, even a few generations later.
    In other news spam came full circle back to the states in my family. My late grandmother was Korean, and me and all my cousins were raised eating spam in several of the aforementioned ways because she often made it for our dad's when they grew up. I hadn't had spam since highschool until a recent family reunion, where it was had alongside several traditional Korean dishes.
