You should have a separate supplement to this video where you ask Dr. Hahn to explain his experience of NOT converting to Eastern Orthodoxy because of the filioque controversy. It would be beneficial for Catholics who are not familiar / don't have the time to get into the depths of understanding the controversy. I have experienced some good fellow Catholics being enamored with Eastern Orthodoxy and even converting, and I never know what to say to them. I find Dr Hahn has the gift of making the complex simple for us little brain Catholics. God bless!

After listening to Dr. Hahn's account of the Eucharist, I suddenly felt the need to pray and burst into tears. I'm a protestant, but I don't think I can deny the Catholic church any longer. The Eucharist is real. It's not a metaphor. Please pray for me, a sinner. I think I have to become Catholic for the sake of my conscience. Peace be with you.

I'm a born and raised Seventh-Day Adventist (SDA) - for those who don't know, SDAs believe the Catholic church to be the beast of Revelation. Two years ago I started dating a Catholic girl and it is through her that I became open to looking at Catholic beliefs. My family and friends are predominantly SDA and very upset that I am considering converting to be a Catholic. But I can't deny the truths that I am seeing. I believe God's plan was for me to meet this Catholic girl - I don't think there is any other situation that would have caused me to look into another church. Especially the Catholic church! Please pray for me.

After listening to Dr. Hahn’s other videos last week, I felt very sad of why I left Catholicism in 2005, but I guess it was because of the lack of understanding of the faith that I grew up with. When a Protestant friend invited me to their church I went and never left since just last Sunday, August 13,2023. When I went back to the Catholic church and took communion for the first time since I left in 2005, I can’t control my tears while kneeling down and asking God for forgiveness for leaving, then my cry turned into sobbing that I couldn’t stop for awhile. But I felt like God is forgiving me of leaving and felt in my heart God is welcoming me home. Thanks Jesus for sending Dr. Hahn and Steve Ray and Brian Mercier my way.

Did you have to do confession and somehow reconcile with the church before taking communion? Since you've been gone so long and have been attending Protestant church?

    • @AnabellaWherrett
      @AnabellaWherrett 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

Yes I did confession but that was after I had my communion. I should have done it before communion but I don’t think God would be so legalistic about it. God knows our hearts and when He sees that we are sincere in asking forgiveness directly to Him, I think that’s what matters to God. I believe ‘repentance’ from our sins after confession is more important. We can ask for forgiveness all day long but if we have not truly repented (turned away) from of our sins then confession is just nothing but at a lip service to God.

When I was in a Baptist seminary working on a grad degree around 1993-4, I started reading Origen, Athanasius, Irenaeus and Clement and the rest for a history course. I started carrying a 10 pound New Jerusalem Bible to class and my 80 year old professor would lovingly harass me, then admit that his degree from neighboring Aquinas College was fantastic for him and in studying Greek we knew the Vatican scholars to be the finest in lexical titles, especially the classic “Grammatical Analysis of the Greek New Testament.” My grandmother’s priest and nun spoke at her funeral to the effect that Angela’s dying wish was for her Protestant offspring to come home to Rome, something I have not forgotten. I am still reading Greek Bible and recently acquired several Catholic study Bibles (Nabre, Douay Rheimes, RSV-CE). I have fallen in love with the story of St Athanasius and John Cassian. Pray for me.

About 10 years ago I came back to the church….or just left my cafeteria Catholic attitude behind. After my Mom stopped crying 😁 she said that I should check out this Catholic scholar she keeps hearing about. She said “I think his name is Scott Hahn”. The rest is history. Read many of this books, watched his lectures on You Tube and listened to his awesome conversion story probably 20 times by this point. I also daily listen to his rosary in the Hallow app. Never get bored of Scott Hahn. I hope to converse with him in Heaven one day.

*Scott Hahn is almost exclusively the reason for my conversion from Presbyterianism to Catholicism (in 2003). I even had a whole bunch of his books. The one on confession he gave to me, and signed it, at the Atlanta Eucharistic conference in 2003. This was just before I became Catholic. Afterward, he came and gave a talk at my parish and signed the rest of his books that I owned. Our family moved in 2014 and I never found the books while unpacking. I’m so bummed that, somehow, I lost them in the move. This was such a great interview. I’m so happy to be a PWA Patreon supporter.

    • @adamgoldwasser

I’ve been really diving into the Papacy debate. I am Catholic but have always loved Orthodoxy, reading their saints was huge for me in returning to Catholic Faith. For some reason in the last few months I’ve been really fixated on this issue. I think I have finally let it go though. I feel like there’s more evidence for the papacy(especially looked at through a Jewish lense) than for devotion to the blessed mother, or even more than for the true presence in the Eucharist. I don’t feel like Orthodox scrutinizes those other sacred traditions to the same degree as they do the papacy. I think they are just trying to justify the split. We can convince ourselves of many things to justify a position. In the end I think that, just like a lot of Protestants view on the Eucharist as well as the early followers who left Christ bc of the Bread of life discourse: Orthodoxy, in relation to the papacy, echos the same statement... “This is a hard teaching. Who can accept it?”

Within the church you may agree or feel beter with the traditionalist or maybe fine with Novous Order and the traditionalist but do not agree with the schim of blessing gay marriage or Eucharist on the hand nor with crimes commited by certain clergy nor on the lack of string of immediate action against them by the church hierarchy many times in the past but of coverage and changing location or sending the clergy to permanent retirement.

Great interview! As a Confessional LCMS Lutheran (ie conservative Lutheran that holds to the Lutheran Confessions…not that wing-ding liberal branch the ELCA), I too am currently investigating the claims of the Catholic faith. I have recently begun to read through the Catholic Catechism and am praying that The Holy Spirit will guide me. I love being Lutheran but will go wherever The Truth leads. However, I do want to provide some info for other Protestants who maybe aren’t quite there yet (as am I) but yet strongly desire a more traditional and liturgical style of worship with a Biblical and historical doctrine of The Eucharist. Lutherans confess that The Eucharist is truly the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ. We reject the symbolic view and we reject the “purely spiritual” view of the Presbyterians. Luther was adamant about it being the True Body and Blood of Jesus Christ. Upon receiving it the Pastor says “Take and eat, The true Body of our Lord, given for you for the forgiveness of sins” and then “Take and drink, the true Blood of our Lord, shed for you for the forgiveness of your sins”.
Another thing is that the Lutheran liturgy is nearly identical to the Catholic liturgy. I feel right at home when visiting a Catholic Mass because just as Dr. Hahn was saying, the liturgy is based on how worship is done in both the Old Testament and Book of Revelation (Chap 5 Heavenly worship). There is a wonderful book by Lutheran Theologian Jordan Cooper titled “Liturgical Worship” that goes into great detail about what everything means and how it connects to Scripture. Also, for those of you who are Reformed Protestants, check out his book “The Great Divide” which contrasts Reformed Theology with Lutheranism. At any rate, please pray for my journey into learning more about Catholicism and that The Lord will lead us where He wants us to go.

I never "abandoned" the Latin mass, but growing up without any concept of what the priest was saying was not easy. The revelation of the beautiful prayers of the mass, once understood in the vernacular, changed my whole life. While the young can "prefer" the Latin mass, they forget that the information about what was going on in the mass came from the Novus Ordo, unless they sprung from the womb speaking Latin.
Problems arises when the focus of the mass shifts from the Lord to the celebrant's personality and all the abuses therein. The well said Novus Ordo is magnificent. I would ask that whatever one's preference is, we must take care not to become liturgy snobs and fall into spiritual pride.

I was raised Catholic and went to all Catholic Schools, including college. I didn't know ANY of this! I was resigned to an eternity in hell until a guy from a Bible teaching church shared the Gospel with my wife and me in the '70s. Many of the kids I went to HS with left the Church long ago. Now am I in my 70s and am in a real struggle about the Catholic Church being the one true Church. I am like Scott Hahn too, steeped in Presbyterian theology. This is painful to listen to, but then I never would have found salvation without the evangelicals who witnessed to us. So being saved as a non-Catholic is better than going to hell, and that is my consolation. And many of my friends from Catholic school never did get saved. Bless you Dr. Hahn and Matt Fradd too! There is some guilt associated with turning their world upside down like that, but I do believe that sometimes that’s exactly what Jesus asks us to do to follow him. Please pray for me.

The Lamb's Supper is another book by Dr. Hahn that you may like to read. It's a short book, but packed with so much beauty. May God bless you on your journey.

I appreciate your prayers so much. I finally took the plunge and have started RCIA and attending Mass about 3 weeks ago. Everything changed when I started to pray the rosary daily. Mary has heard my request for guidance and is guiding me to her Son 🤍 Now I am praying for the conversion of my husband 🙏🏻

Thank you Dr. Hahn for defending the restored mass in the vernacular language (Novus Ordo). It is so wonderful to have mass in our own language and to receive communion in the hands and receive both the Body and Blood of Jesus. It is like Pentecost and the early Church where we understand what is happening. We lost so much when Latin only masses were imposed across the entire western Church. It is my understanding that Koine (common) Greek, the language of the people, was the first language of mass in the Western Church. In grade school and high school we went to Latin Mass every morning. So I went to thousands of Latin masses and served at hundreds. We received communion on the tongue and of course were denied receiving the Blood of Christ. I quite frankly don't understand this false romanticizing of the Latin mass. I am going to speak the truth here. The way mass was said before Vatican II was quite frankly disrespectful. There was a real rot in the liturgy that cried out to heaven for reform. Mass was said in a slam bang way. Prayers by the priest were spoken softly at a fast pace where no one could follow even if they could understand Latin. We altar boys couldn't keep up with the priest in our responses. Most women prayed the rosary; the men looked bored and the children fidgety. Again, this is how it actually was, not the profound religious experience that the traditionalists claim. As an altar boy, I always think with humor when I remember an interchange I overheard by the priests about doing the once a year "kiss of peace." I forgot which service. But after all their planning, they ended up barely touching and kind of swinging back and forth. Now, we have a real kiss of peace where people share of themselves freely. The mass now is much closer to what Justin Martyr described with the restored prayers of the faithful, additional readings in the Liturgy of the Word, the kiss of peace and of course the most wonderful - receiving communion in the hands and under both species. Also, isn't Canon I basically the Tridentine mass but with sorely needed reforms? So where is the real problem here? In my mind, many people who push the Latin mass basically see Latin as a sort "Magic Language," where the religious experience comes from this mysterious incantation instead of what actually happens during the sacrifice of the mass. Sorry if this seems uncharitable, but it is what I have observed. As someone of Slovak descent, I grew up with the great heritage of Saint Cyril and Methodius who attempted to bring the vernacular language Roman Liturgy to the Slavic people but were stymied by Frankish Latinists who were using the Latin mass as a political hammer to gain political control in the region. Notice I said the Roman Liturgy in the Slavic language, not the Byzantine liturgy. This was approved by not one but by two popes. However, Cyril and Methodius were continually persecuted by the Latinists and in fact, St. Methodious, the archbishop appointed by the pope, spent two years in jail. He was put there by the Latinists so he couldn't promulgate the Roman liturgy in the Slavic language, again even though it had papal approval. After numerous orders by the pope, Methodius was eventually released but when he died, his followers were driven out and who then went to the more eastern Slavs. There they switched to the Byzantine Liturgy and their missionary work met with great success. The story doesn't end there. When the great East West Schism came, those Slavic Christians went with Constantinople. Western Christianity lost a whole major people. The story continues in the 16th century when the Protestants revolted. Probably the Protestant's main attraction to the common person was the ability to hear the mass in their own language. Just imagine if St. Cyril and Methodius had been able to implement the Roman liturgy in the language of the people. That would have spread around other parts of Europe. Men like Luther, Calvin and Cramner would have been much less attractive to the common people. A small blip in the history of the Church but not this terrible rupture that we have now.

Ironically, as a full blooded Protestant, non-calvanist, this video has given me a fervent desire to continue to know the Word of God better, because so many, Catholics and Protestants, get soo much wrong when looking to other men to interpret the scriptures for them. Only the truth can set you free, and only your own searching of the original Proto-canonical scriptures can lead you into a personal relationship with the One true and living God.

I’m a cradle Catholic love my faith. Have never left the church but, I only went to confession the day before my first Holy Communion. I had a friend who’s father was a practicing Catholic priest. So I decided I was never going to confession ever again. So therefore I punished myself by not receiving communion all this years. Because the law abiding Catholic I am knew that if I didn’t go to confession I couldn’t receive communion. It wasn’t until I discovered Dr. Hahn a couple months ago and how heartfelt he talked about the Eucharist. I against my will went to confession , with the priest that I love so much which is also my coworker at the VA hospital. It was a face to face confession my biggest fear. All I have to say after my confession Father Jose absolved me of my sins, told me you are as clean as the day you were baptized gave me communion and prayed with me. Thank you so much Dr Hahn for opening up not only my eyes but my heart. This man is a legend he is so full of the Holy Spirit. You will always be in my prayers🙏
