The Best Overdrive Pedal Of All Time - ThorpyFX Peacekeeper

  • In this video I look at what I would consider to be the greatest Overdrive pedal of al time the ThorpyFX Peacekeeper.
The Thorpy Peacekeeper is a low gain overdrive that I feel works with any guitar. Many times Ive picked up a Les Paul after say a Stratocaster and have to completely change my amp settings. with this pedal everything sounds great.
Here's what Thorpy say about the Peacekeeper
The PEACEKEEPER is our take on a low gain overdrive designed to suit all guitars and all amps whilst delivering the sweetest on the edge to crunch tones you have ever heard. Hyperbole aside, this pedal has some very cunning tricks up its sleeve, by combining a post gain active Treble and Bass circuit with a pre-gain Mids/presence control you are able to tailor the overdrive character and tonality to your exacting needs. The pre-gain mids control allows you to move from a very smooth mid scooped gain type to a more pronounced mid humped gain with all the subtleties in between. Post gain the active treble and bass controls adapt that focussed gain stage to achieve the tonality you desire/need. Used as a subtle boost into your amp (ala Klon style) or as an "on the Edge" overdrive, the PEACEKEEPER will make you wonder how you sound so good!
Aside from achieving fantastic sonic credentials the PEACEKEEPER is built like a tank with physical features such as recessed knobs and top mounted jacks. Robust build does not have to come at the sacrifice of looks, the PEACEKEEPER uses a combination of a beautiful stainless steel laser etched centre console wrapped in a tough baseplate.
Internally the pedal is immaculately built using premium 1% metalfilm resistors, Wima and Panasonic capacitors, Neutrik jacks and a Burr-Brown Opamp. These are the crème de la crème of the electronics world and when coupled with a robust gold plated PCB and dust sealed potentiometers the recipe is as good as it can possibly be.
The Studio Rats are core band members Paul Drew on guitar/production/mixing, drummer James Ivey and Dan Hawkins on bass. They collaborate with singers and musicians to produce radio-ready songs.

Killer OD. Gives the sound a solid punch while still being able to hear the individual string responses...even full chords sound clear but driven to perfection.

Sounds great and Thorpy does make a great pedal. Love my Fallout Cloud (Fuzz) and totally agree regarding the LED brightness and legibility of the script.
I degreased the top plate and used a little acrylic paint over the script, wiped over leaving some in the impressions which helped, added a blob on the LED too which mellowed it out.
The Treble and Bass work around a fixed point, so with both at 1 o'clock you're applying a little mid cut, roll back to 9 O'clock and it would push the mids etc, it's a great feature which often gets overlooked or misunderstood.

Stumbled across this vid when looking for something else. I agree totally - best pedal I own. It stacks insanely well too because the EQ is so powerful. Love it.

I have a personal preference for what I would describe as a creamy overdrive sound. On just about all previous reviews of Thorpy pedals I have heard I found them to be a little too aggressive and spikey for my liking BUT... this sounds so delicious. I'm delighted I found this clip as this seems a pedal well worth trying.

I am in the process of buying one on ebay :) sent an offer!!! fingers crossed!! I already own 2 thorpy pedals! best build quality out there :) I have actually met him once! before he became famous! he use to sell pedals on ebay! stuff he built in his spare time while he was in the army :) he dropped a pedal off to me, was in his uniform, nice guy! UPDATE: I won the pedal for 145 pounds in mint condition

I'd have to agree it sounds amazing. i have trouble getting on with fuzz, but from memory, Thorpy fuzz's really sounded amazing, because they had an over drive feel to the tone with the fuzz element.

I always knew at some point I’d try this pedal out, but I bought the Peacekeeper in the back of this quick review. Majorly surprised how much gain it had for a low gain pedal although the gain never really moves past 11 o’clock 🙌

You sold me on this pedal! I actually was researching the Scarlet Tunic, but this pedal is a lot more useful for my needs with the current band I am in. I like how it lets the personality of both the amp and the guitar to shine through. Thinking why do I have both various different types of guitars and amps, if the overdrive imprints its sound over them.

I would have liked to hear it without the reverb. A guy named Matt Diggs in Michigan makes the MUSA Model 101 "FIREHOUSE" Distortion which is also top notch and sounds very similar. It's too bad we don't have a side by side comparison. Unfortunately, a Firehouse is hard to get.

Hey Paul. First of all love the channel - absolutely one of the best out there I'm recent times.
Hopefully you csn help, I'm stuck between this and the origin effects meq and knowing you've played boost. Is there much overlap and which would you say is the more unique/versatile. I want it to be an always on type of pedal to sweeten my amp tone with the option of going gainier.
Thanks in advance for any help!
    Nath

    • @TheStudioRats
      @TheStudioRats  ปีที่แล้ว +1

Hi Nathan you’ll be happy with both, but as an always on pedal, in my opinion, the peace keeper is the one, while the MEQ drive is best for gain tones.

Every week someone's coming out with a new overdrive pedal, and theres not that much difference your just reinventing the wheel the components may be different but they all end up in the same place nothing new. These are made for people that like to collect pedals.
