    We've gone past the halfway point of the tour and Dubrovnik was a tremendous place to spin ourselves through 180 and head home. A truly beautiful medieval city.
    But sightseeing aside, it's time to start heading home.
    So we hit the coast road again, past the aftermath of the fires we saw on the way down. Past Split and on to the see the Sea Organ in Zadar!

    For the question about the small part of the coast Bosnia & Herzegovina has. In the 17th century, The Republic of Ragusa (Dubrovnik) gave away that piece of land to the Ottoman Empire to get a buffer zone between them and Venice (their main rival at the time). It remained part of the Ottoman Empire until it was taken over by Austria-Hungary. However, it the small part remained the part of Bosnia in Yugoslavia, so after the Yugoslavia breakup, this part went to Bosnia.

      It seems there is a wealth of complicated and tumultuous history surrounding that area. And not all of it with any grounding in common sense!!

      @@AndyManCam Regarding the loss of response at low RPM without the baffle in ... you leaned off the mixture and thus increased vibration while losing power on the Open Loop part of your fueling (accelerating).The material on the Boosterplug website explains the power loss but does not mention the vibrations. I just fitted the Boosterplug to my MT-01 and noticed an immediate and considerable drop in vibrations. I emailed Jens and he explained the vibration is also due to lean mixture rectified by the BP. Thank you BTW for your excellent videos on the BP, they helped me in my purchase.

    Apparently the little bit of Bosnia is to do with the Ottoman empire many years ago. The Dubrovnik region gave away abit of land to the north to keep it safe from the war.

    Wow ... Primošten,Karlovačko beer ... you nailed it hahahaha ... good job my friend .... now about fires you saw ... Croatia last year had the biggest fire threat in its history ... fires came close as like 100m from Split ... every fire department from continental Croatia came to the coast to defend the homes of people (they were voted 2nd most important "person" of 2017. in Croatia) ... people also defended their homes ... about your border crossing Bosnia and Hercegovina were like Croatia in Yugoslavia under Tito and to be fair to all nations Tito gave them Neum (that part which is the border) ... I could write about Dubrovnik and its history but it would take too long ... just to note 1416. abolished slavery,1377. introduced quarantine,first pharmacy and the oldest in Europe 1357. etc etc
    Glad you had a blast ... looking forward to see Zagreb my home town in your vid
    Bye

    • @AndyManCam
      @AndyManCam  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I tried my best! Glad I got some things right! Never felt comfortable saying Zadar though! That's utterly terrifying about the fires. Though in the face of that, who was deemed more important than the fire department!!?

    The Old Republic of Dubrovnik did not want land border with Venice (fear of a land invasion of a competitive trading republic) therefore this part of the land was sold to the Ottoman Empire which the Venetian should not pass because it would risk the war and especially commercial privileges

  • @CPUspeed
    @CPUspeed 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Great vid great series! Oh so there are fires in places other than socal. I just leave the baffle in because the material inside wears out anyway and it gets louder and don't lose back pressure.

    • @AndyManCam
      @AndyManCam  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you! Yeah apparently this one was so big that every fire department in Croatia headed to the coast to help. I think I'll leave the baffle in too. I prefer torque over high revs!

  • @andrewretaylor
    @andrewretaylor 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    As always, awesome work Andy! Hope you camera isn't too badly smashed up.
    In terms of the Border crossing at Neums, I've known for a while its had a long history, but having a bit of a google I didn't realise its extensive as it is. From what had a quick read though, Dubrovnik used to be the Republic of Regusa and has been held/vassled or had deals with multiple different empires, Venice, Ottoman, Hungry and French, and somewhere along there Dubrovnik became part of Croatia, I assume there was a treaty there at some point. From what I can see Bosnia-Herzegovina had that bit of land prior to Dubrovnik becoming part of Croatia and despite the joining and disbanding of yugoslavia multiple times in the last few hundred years it has managed to hold onto that bit of land.

    • @AndyManCam
      @AndyManCam  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Andrew! It seems like it's a real politico-geographical can of worms! Amazing the crazy history that shapes the countries around us.

    • @mrcina8599
      @mrcina8599 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Dubrovnik Republic sold that part to Ottoman Bosnia in 1699 becouse it wanted to have a buffer between them and Venetian colony up north. Dubrovnik had an agreement with Ottomans at that time while Venice was its maritime and trading rival. Today this part of Bosnia and Herzegovina all the way up to half of Mostar is somewhat separatist with Croat majority. During the war that land was called Croatian Republic of Herzeg-Bosnia.

    • @peter93794
      @peter93794 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      The Republic of Ragusa was also a Croatian republic, ruled and inhabited by Croats (remember, there were no proper nation states in Europe in the middle ages).
      And regarding Neum… after the peace in Sremski Karlovac in the year 1699, the Republic of Ragusa demanded that its territory should be separated from the territory of the Venetian Republic, therefore Otomans were given Neum as a sort of a buffer in between them.
      Current border at Neum is actually completely artificial and a consequence of Tito’s decision in 1945 to create a republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina as some sort of a buffer between Croatia and Serbia.
      So when you are crossing Neum, you’re officially entering another state (province Herzegovina, not Bosnia which is located much more to the north), but in fact you’re still driving through the land, inhabitated 99% by Croatians.

    3:46
    Actually, that guy has the smart road positioning unlike yourself at 3:43. It's not a racetrack and it's not a rarely used country road - it's a busy coastal highway and you should not take being safe on it for granted. You should not be so close to the center line with big lorries passing by, it's not only dangerous in case your bike fails (brakes, punctured tires, etc.) but also because any number of unexpected things may happen to really fuck up your day, like unhooked lorry tarpaulin, rocks being thrown by their massive tires, a car going over the center line, etc. Just a well meaning advice. ;)

    • @AndyManCam
      @AndyManCam  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      We’ll have to agree to disagree there. Every rider worth his salt knows that coming wide into a corner affords you a vastly better view of everything ahead and far more time to react to any of the things that you mentioned. That guy could probably see max 10m in front of him, whereas from my position i could see at least twice as far through every bend as he could.

    €10 for a cardboard box in the garden? You were lucky. We lived for three months in a rolled-up newspaper in a septic tank.We used to have to get up every morning at 6 o’clock and clean the newspaper, go to work down t' mill, fourteen hours a day, week-in week-out, for sixpence a week, and when we got home our Dad would thrash us to sleep with his belt.

    I have found some old maps of Kingdom of Bosnia and some history facts so ... from 1180 ad to 1391 ad Bosnia ruled portions of Croatia from Biograd ( near Zadar ) with islands of Solta,Brac,Hvar and Korcula to Bay of Kotor ( in Montenegro ) with except of Republic of Dubrovnik,Peljesac peninsula and Mljet island. Large portion of coast. Then Otomans came and all hell brakes out. Last ruler of Kindom was Queen Catherine ( wife of King Stephen Thomas who died few years before ) she escaped to Dubrovnik and then to Vatican city Rome . She died there in 1478 and buried at Santa Maria in Aracoeli church. Her kids was taken by Otomans and they converted to Islam in Istambul. Croats regained land after some time and they were stoping power or wall for Europe against Otomans.
    Interesting facts , at least for me.

    • @peter93794
      @peter93794 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Just worth adding…Kingdom of Bosnia in the time of its existence (2 years as a recognized kingdom, 84 as a raging kingdom, and 197 as a banovina) was a Croat kingdom, with Croat catholic rulers (Queen Catherine being the last one) and Croat inhabitants.

    I believe the small B&H border was because when Dubrovnik was allied with the Ottoman Empire which starting losing power, it gave a small piece of land to the nearby towns to give it buffer from the northern enemies of the Ottoman. So post Yugoslavian war, the town was Bosnian so that land is part of the now B&H. Oh my...

    I know its rude not to but giving up the big throttle blip on downshifts would help the mpg figures. Im just as guilty

      @AndyManCam  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      But where would the fun be in that!! Plus, with the agressive engine braking on the Versys, without blipping I could have locked up the rear wheel. That's dangerous! So I blip for 'safety' reasons! :D

    • @johna6968
      @johna6968 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      No fun at all but will help those mpg figures on trips. A smaller blip would suffice. Some may even call it rev matching ;-)

      I love the Versys engine braking. Descending the local mountain grades (as steep as 14%) with hairpin turns takes all the engine braking I can get.
      A couple years ago I was descending Pikes Peak through a maze of hairpins, when I got stuck behind a motorist driving at the speed of continental drift. (Sorry, but I had to steal that). As we reached a short straight between two hairpins, I made my move to pass. Just as I pulled along side him, I messed up a shift. So there I was: Heading into a hairpin...in the wrong lane...with a car on my right...and the rear wheel dancing all over the road. It was at that moment I suddenly figured out why slipper clutches are a thing. ;-)
      Funny thing is the new Versys-X 300cc comes with a slipper standard.

      No doubt. I think people mistakenly think that the Ads pay good money which they do not.

      A mate of mine works for Google (he has no soul. It's like scientology) and over a beer one night, about 5 years ago, he told me that a million views equated to around $5000-$7000. Now it's about $500-$700!! MAN did we miss the golden window!! :D

    • @BMRTV
      @BMRTV 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Exactly (advertisers now start to really understand the value of ads). Knowing that, how many motorcycle channels do you know that have enough views video after video to make any actual money? Any? Most "good" channels are far less than what's needed so it seems to me creators need to focus on things like Patreon or Maker's Support or I guess Merch. Either that or it's 'just for fun' or advertising for something else. Teapotone seems to be trying to establish a touring business....I assume Vida is doing something similar. Touring with Andy??

      Not a bad idea mate. Wildly complicated so hats off to those chaps. I've been thinking about exploring deeper in to the merch world as well. I just still find it hard to imagine folks want stuff with me on it! 😂

    You have not been to Bosnia, you have been in Hercegovina. Bosnia is in the North and Hercegovina is in the south.
    You know Bosnia AND Hercegovina 😉
    So Neum is in Hercegovina and the population of Neum are 99.999 % Croats 😊

      So I keep getting told! ;p It's all very confusing for an outsider! Especially when the sign 'at the door' says Bosnia on it!!
