Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy are the protectors of Bikini Bottom - And have been fighting crime for over 70 years for its citizens, such as Spongebob Squarepants and Patrick Star. Villains constantly lie in the wake - such as Manray Plankton and the Dirty Bubble. Is the superhero life of crimefighting and intense hero duties becoming too much for our heroes? Is it time they retire to the Krusty Krab?

Jokes aside, I think the idea of an aging superhero duo having to accept the fact that they can't go on forever could make for an actually good movie. With Nickelodeon constantly making Spongebob content, it's a little surprising to realize that MM and BB haven't really had a piece of the pie yet.
It's because both their actors died, and they haven't had a speaking role on the show since. The most the show has done with them since is either have Spongebob and Patrick role play as them or flesh out villains like Man Ray and the Dirty Bubble. They already had an episode that explained their origin story rather hilariously, so I don't think Nick would go the route of an origin spinoff with younger actors unless they were gonna retcon that one

I'm glad they didn't, Nickelodeon has milked Spongebob dry, it has drastically dropped in quality and the movies after the first one were mediocre.

Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy: The Movie
Plot:
Bikini Bottom wants Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy to retire after a laundry list of failures to stop criminals. Barnacle Boy considers it, but Mermaid Man believes they should do one last heroic fight before they retire. Whether out of luck or not, Man Ray has escaped prison, and it's up to the aging heroes to put him back in. But with age catching up to them day after day, will they be able to do this last fight? Or will they have to retire early?
Release date: June 15, 2024.
