Igor on 9.28 you say it's check mate next move but the black queen can go beside the king offering an exchange with the bishop and so then white queen cannot get chack mate. It also seems a very difficulkt position if the white bishop is gone even if the balck queen has been sacrificed. There is nothing to support the white queen and even the castle seems insufficient to mount a conserted attack. Black can defend agianst it. It seems to me anywa, but I am not a master. Can you finish this game off please?
This was one of the first gambits i played to get cheap wins, I found it more consistent to enter this line by transposing with the Reti (1. Nf3 d5 2. e4) as it was more common for an opponent to respond with d5 (most common reply) than if you open with e5 (5th most common reply). Great opening for crushing beginners, loses it's value when opponents know the simple refutation 5. Bxd3 Nc6.
I have learned about 50 opening move variants from watching these videos and I would say they come up in my games about 1% of the time. So they are worth knowing but they don't make a huge difference to my rating.
The Caro-Kann transposes into it via the Caruana variation 1.e4 c6 2. d3 d5 3. Nf3, and so forth. White can also engage the trolling motor with 1. Nf3 d5 2. e4 dxe4 3. Ng5
In my opinion this is a very awful weapon. The thing I have against this is that there are not that many complications and diverse lines to confuse your opponent. The treats are pretty obvious and only worth the risk(gambit) in very fast time controls against an opponent who have never faced this. Otherwise is just trash.
The issue is that only really good players defend pawns. most lower ranked players just attack and let you take pawns. Any strategy that depends on your opponent defending a pawn is pretty useless.
Thanks Igor - finally got to play this line. FIrst brilliant move on move 6 and second brilliant move on move 7 followed by a great move on move 8 - nice! He held on until move 23 but I was up 15 points of material by then. Tennison for the win!!!
It's almost unreal how a 2400 IM (i. e. Gotham chess) could recommend a straight-forward blunder like that Qxc7). It simply exposes the (pretty) big difference in level between an IM and a proper GM like Igor.
Wow, a Reti transposing to a Tennison gambit! Quite ingenious. I have to say, this is one of the better and more entertaining chess channels out there.
love your videos, always very instructional! Love the transposition ideas also. I do feel like I need to point out that when black doesn't play h6... the whole plan just fizzles out. And like literally almost every logical move for black is winning This is the case in most of these gambits except more complex ones like the smith morra gambit...
@ 9:25 “And nothing can stop the checkmate” Well that’s not completely accurate. Qxe6… black has at least two moves. … Ne5 discover attacks the queen with the bishop on c8 and guarding f7, After QxN then Ne8 and if the Q resumes attack on the a1 diagonal and the bishop doesn’t take the Knight then follow up with N to d6 and the queen bishop check mate is stopped for now. Though as you say White is still completely winning. The other move is …Qd8 and sacrifices the queen. Thanks for these video I really enjoy them.
at 9:23 how is that checkmate? Can't black move their queen to e8 then when you check with queen on f7 they take your queen with their queen? I'm brand new btw so please explain since I may be blind! thank you
@@АлександрС-г1е why would you play queen f7 after bishop takes queen? You might not be able to checkmate it now, but you've just won a free queen and potentially broke your foe's game. In most cases, this situation is a tactical victory.
There's actually a way out of the trapped queen @2:44, you go PH4, then black goes NE8, and instead of losing queen, go PH5 to check the king. King usually hides in H7, which opens up QF7 as an escape route. I still don't like it though because in 2 moves black can get NxC2 and fork the rook, so it's better to drop down the queen and start preparing for that as well as the rest of the assault whti the extra bishop and knight by developing the bottom left corner pieces.
Now I'm convinced that QxC7 is actually the best move, but you must follow it with pH4 then pH5+, opening up QF7 to escape when king hides. Their next plan is likely a 2 knight move to fork K&R at NxC2 but that is avoided by first going pC3 to stop that knight from coming down.
Knight to e5 refutes the threat of checkmate. White responds by capturing the knight with the Queen, restoring material equality, and is still ahead in development.
I tried this position against Stockfish and even though I won his queen, he beat me like nothing, he initiated an immediate counter-attack with almost all his pieces, so I think its not a good idea to open defense this way if you play against experienced players who punish every mistake. But I learnedsomethi g new, so thank you for this lesson.
Igor - this has a simple refutation which you didn't cover: h6 on the 4th move, as in 1. e4 d5 2. Nf3 dxe 3. Ng5 Nf6 4. d3 h6! and there are no good moves for the knight. Nxe4 leads to a queen trade which leaves white slightly worse - hardly a reason to play the Tennison. And Nh3 is too horrible to contemplate. That's why 4. d3 isn't even given in the lichess masters database (which only shows the options Nc3 and Bc4) it's just a mistake. And just to underscore how bad 4. d3 is black is also better after 5... e5 (instead of trading the knights and getting the queen trade).
I usually get to the trap position when my opponent plays the Caro-Kann. Happens all the time against the C-K. Overall, you still have to be careful, because black gets a lot of easy development.
You haven't covered what to do if opponent moves Kc6 as this creates a problem with capturing the queen after checking the king with the bishop, you capture the queen and the Knight on C6 can capture your queen
I used to love chess when at school until I realised that white always has the first move advantage. I wonder why a coin toss for who goes first, instead of who plays white, has not caught on?
Oh come on stop bullying Levy Guy's, fact is that he's better than everyone in this comment section and also he's just human, we all make mistakes, he's still a great teacher tho I like Gotham ✊✊✊
Maybe some people like to spend time remembering all kind of counters in hope their opponents react in some predictable way, however that's not the way most people play -- yes, some will devote hundreds of hours memorizing countless of moves -- but what does that really do to the fun factor - which is why the vast majority play? At sub 1000 play -this kind of stuff is irrelevant - and those who aspire higher also can and should expect so many other reactions......and you need to be creative enough to respond to those...

Yep ,tried this yesterday and he played Nc6, turning the queen capture into a trade

@ 12:59 black can play Qd1+, after the forced line Qxd1 cxd1Q+ Kxd1 dxf5 he remains with two pawns advantage... still a nice gambit
2:40 Oh no Gothamchess. Send this to Gothamchess. This is big mistake
Wow, a Reti transposing to a Tennison gambit! Quite ingenious. I have to say, this is one of the better and more entertaining chess channels out there.
🙏
At 1:00 what do you do as white when after playing D3 black plays H6?
my very first game with white and i get to play this gambit, took his queen, made the win, quite amazing strategy! love it
💪
Great chess lessons, very useful in blitz and rapid matches also, thank you Sir

White still has some compensation and piece activity. It's especially suitable for blitz games.
At 9:26 what if black responds with Ne5?
Yash Rathi bhai chess kab start Kiya ??
Same question bro lol
@ 9:25 “And nothing can stop the checkmate” Well that’s not completely accurate. @@gabrielsantiago4929 Yes! But king takes bishop and if queen f7 king takes it too ....

@@gabrielsantiago4929 You are right i wouldn't. On 9:23 sounds like checkmate is only option.
Wow...what a wonderful move...you are a genius and great master💪👏👌thanks for your lesson and great Tipp

After pawn h4, knight e8, pawn h5, black can play king f6. The king on f6 protects f7 so the queen is still trapped.
9:23 you can sacrifice the knight from d7 to e5 so you can move the bishop from c8 to d7 and stop the checkmate
Knight to e5 refutes the threat of checkmate. White responds by capturing the knight with the Queen, restoring material equality, and is still ahead in development.
My problem is that I have no humans to play with here in Jamaica, just Stockfish, and it seems impossible to fool or trap the thing.
What is the name of the orange cat? He is a major player in your vids as well.
I appreciate the fact you get right into the lesson. Thanks for the vid
Glad it was helpful!
Great, but I don't get that 'black most likely will be castling' thing whilst his rook is being attacked (5:42)
Ty so very much GM IGOR!!!
fantastic ! you are such a genius

Thank you! 😊
10:13 tennison Gambit
On 9:21 Black Queen on e8 protects from the immediate checkmate
Thank you so much sir!!!
Opening into one gambit with the option of setting up two more with unorthodox moves during development is more fun imo
Whats the line if they play h6 sooner instead of taking the second pawn for example: E4, D5, KnF3, dxe4, KnG5, KnF6, D3, H6
I also play the intercontinental ballistic missile against the Caro kann and against d4.
This is awesome. Now if only I could remember any of it during a game

Fantastic, now I’ll wait a few years when people forget about this opening and start playing it xD
That's a strategic thinking! 🤣
Sir... What about h6....!!?
Instead of exd3
please tell me
Can somebody go over white's line if black plays bishop F5?
this can also arise after caro cann. the breyer variation
What about the h6 horse in the bishop position to both defend the checmate and bishop
Finally… Able to execute this gambit. 😁
ik this video is a couple weeks old but do anyone know what to do if black does e6 before the take d3 pawn?
Igor - this has a simple refutation which you didn't cover: h6 on the 4th move, as in 1. e4 d5 2. Nf3 dxe 3. Ng5 Nf6 4. d3 h6! and there are no good moves for the knight. Awesome discussion on video. Thank you.

Can you cover if black responds pawn to f5 instead of bishop please
Love your posts man
9:23 what do you mean there's no defense against Qf7. What about ... Qe8?; Qf7+ Qxf7; Bxf7 Kxf7; nothing wrong there.
...Qe8, Bxe8 no?
Almost EVERY game i try this line (E4, D5, KnF3, dxe4, KnG5) black responds with F5... which gives very mixed results as i still try D3
I used to pay Nf3 alot forcing my opponents into the London or catalan or queen's gambit
I usually get to the trap position when my opponent plays the Caro-Kann. Happens all the time against the C-K. Overall, you still have to be careful, because black gets a lot of easy development.

you never talk about black night to G6 first move which is the most common
this is cool. but do note that if black deviates in some cases the game is -1.5.
I already messed it up and I haven’t even tried it yet.
Played this 5 times. Only one went anywhere near the right line, and he veered off on move 2.
The first game after this video I got black in the gambit 😂😂 and won against the highest rated player I've played in rapid.
What if black plays 3 Bf5?
3. ...Bf5 4. Nc3, and life goes on.
Beautiful
What if Nc6 is played by black
The problem is unfortunately that too many big names have made these lines known. So they don’t really work anymore.
Then start a new account to troll the noobs
Its not the right name, the right name is "Intercontinental ballistic missile gambit" aka "ICBM gambit" :D
Actually after watching loads movies of this GM my rating dropped from 1k to 800 around. I do not understand myself :(
What if they play h6 instead of Bg4?
I have a opponent who went Nh6 …I swear he cheating lol. But it is Daily. I did win with this gambit twice on rapid recently.
Nice, but basically no one never ever plays the moves you need.

Nc6???? We just retreat now when they play h 6? lol
