I always enable captions for your vids. The little writing quirks you throw in really get me going. And it's not at the cost of understandability for viewers who might be more deaf than myself! Some much bigger channels just leave on Auto Caption or sack it off entirely, and that sucks. I appreciate the effort you put in.

Unrelated to the video but related to upscaling:
A Remedy Dev released an unofficial update / mod for Control, called the HDR mod. It fixes a lot of things, including allowing use of modern 2.5.1 DLSS dll file AND allowing use of FSR2 mod (0.8 Beta 6).
Also Alan Wake Remastered works great with DLSS or with the FSR2 mod (0.8 Beta 2).
Finished both Control (1080p + FSR2 Balanced) and Alan Wake Remastered (1440p + FSR2 Balanced) at 120 fps each, on a 5700 XT.

DLAA sounds a lot like DLDSR (the deep learning version of their super-resolution upscampler) minus the weird quirks of having your monitor spazz out as it tries to change to a higher resolution (throwing your desktop icons into chaos) or the way every game then breaks if you alt-tab.

I’ve been fortunate enough to be able to pick up a 40 series card and I have to say that DLSS 3.0 has impressed me greatly. Without it I think ray tracing would be unusable in this game.
I'm using ray tracing on a 3080 and can hit 60fps 🤷

Phillip Do you still recommend using upscaling if using a 1080p monitor?
I use DLSS quality at 1080p. There are games where i don't notice the difference and others where i do. In former cases if i have enough performance i run (DL)DSR and then DLSS so i get a bootleg DLAA. You can do the same thing with FSR 2 i believe
@@2kliksphilip Quality always looked slightly blurrier than native to me at 1080p, but in this age of TAA powered deferred rendering solutions native 1080 usually looks too blurry anyway, so its the lesser of two evils imo

I always play on 4k ultra settings with my aging pc, no matter what game. I was really curious how much those settings would improve what I see, since I already have much higher quality than most videos I see online. Turns out it has activated all of it by itself. I also have never had any stuttering, so maybe they've fixed it?
With low quality / high performance DLSS I feel like I can see a pattern in background vegetation in Hitman for example. Then I changed back to no upscaling ^^
Well, technically You can have frame interpolation on a TV with decent results. You could compare it, cuz no one did. Even tho its the closest equivalent. Even closer than Topaz Frame Interpolation since its real time.

I read the equivalent of that shader code in Unity, that suffered from a similar bug.
I think the game during the post-process pass is sending the texture coordinates OF THE ORIGINAL FULL RESOLUTION SCREEN, instead of the scaled ones.
What IS without a doubt a "bug" from dlls is that temporal blur pretty much DELETES small detail like stars in the sky that now blink jn and out and alpha cutout/blended meshes DANCE when switching mipmaps
XeSS and DLSS is essentially the same thing. Just on non intel arc GPUs, you get a slightly smaller model.
But it sgould still be "better" than FSR2

@@2kliksphilip I remember it not being great, and needing to be charged a lot, but its been broke for a while. I refilled it with loose cat nip and broke it stopped working. But cats played with it more than before lol.

FSR 1.0 isn't pointless just because the game supports FSR 2.0. When FSR 2.0 became available testing has shown that fps is lower with it compared to FSR 1.0 (though of course image quality is higher with FSR 2.0).
Now this matters mostly if you're on a very old or low end GPU but I thought it was worth pointing out that if you are really desperate to get more fps by any means necessary than FSR 1.0 will likely give you better results while still looking better than running the game at a non-native resolution without any upscaling.
I feel like running FSR 2 at a lower enough resolution than FSR 1 will give you a similar performance, but much better image quality.
@@iurigrang Yes, FSR 2.0 can look better with a lower base resolution than FSR 1.0 with a higher base resolution (for example when comparing FSR 2.0 Performance and FSR 1.0 Balanced). However my point is that if you're at the point where you need all the fps you can get then FSR 1.0 can be worth considering.

@@electricindigoball1244 why? You can go lower with base resolution with fsr 2, and that also helps you to get "all the fps you can get"
@@iurigrang If you're already at the Performance preset with FSR 2.0 then you can't lower the base resolution without changing the output resolution (for example from 1080p to 720p). If you use a lower output resolution then you'll be adding another upscaling step done by your monitor (or your GPU if it supports GPU upscaling and you have it enabled) at which point the image quality gains from FSR 2.0 might be lost compared to FSR 1.0 Performance running with the output resolution equal to your monitor's native resolution (and any 2D HUD elements such as subtitles will look a lot worse).

I am still an "old school" FULL-HD user. And the game gets blurry with every upscaling version. And because the game does not allow you to disable the anti-aliasing methods, the game also looks blurry with upscaling turned off.
I only can recommend set DLSS to on and set DLSS-Mode to „off“ (for whatever reasons this is possible). Now turn DSR or DL-DSR (VRR for AMD) in your drivers option to f.e. 1x78 and change your desktop resolution to this resolution (take to also set the right refresh rate) and start the game.
Because this is an DX12 game you can not change to exclusive full screen which also means, you can not increase the resolution ingame higher than your monitor resolution (which means you can not use DSR/DL-DS/VRR directly)
NOW the game is crispy sharp.

Same, It’s now like natural aspirated engine. Upscaling techa are turbo chargers, supercharger they ruin natural responsiveness and crispness.

I actually can't stand upscalling, seeing it get all distorted and smeary on the areas that are artifically upscalled while in motion is puke worthy, especially in action games where the screen is constantly moving or stuff on screen is constantly moving, even on "high quality" settings it adds too much film grain and shimmery shit that it's just not worth it unless you absolutely need those frames
@@2kliksphilipI always turn settings like those off, but most of the games I've played that have upscalling seem to artificially add it to the scene, it just looks gross IMHO, but, I am more privileged than most with my computer set up, maybe if I had a toaster I wouldn't mind what upscalling does to the final image in motion.

@@2kliksphilip in all fairness, it's obviously not just film grain and motion blur. Any temporal reconstruction can result in smearing and ghosting which produces a look similar to motion blur.
As for the grainy look. Any sample based effect or heavy subpixel detail will look grainy without AA, but it's hard to notice with soft TAA at native resolutions. As you lower the resolution and use upscalers, the noise produced from these effects becomes less manageable and gives the film grain look people complain about.

Upscaling became an excuse not to spend more time optimizing games
DLAA is faster than TAA High on my Hardware, fixes hair flickering on hair as well.
Native + DLAA is the win. Literally 😘
YUP, Cus like Philip said, DLAA uses the RTX cores of your gpu to do the anti aliasing, where TAA always uses your main GPU cores. It was an immensly good idea on NVIDIA's software team's end!
@@reptarienThat was actually the intended concept of DLSS. When DLSS first got revealed it was described as an alternative/superior anti aliasing tech instead of the "upscale lower resolution to increase FPS" version that actually got released first. You can still find slides where it's described as the former. Kinda funny how the whole concept changed during development after Nvidia realized that you can also use it as the latter.

it's a Portable PC that somehow manages to keep up with current games, I'd love to see Philip work his wonders and test out all the upscaling to see what works best and how it looks
Especially since it's upscaling from to 800p and not anything impressive like 1080p or 4k, so it has less pixels to work with.

DLSS quality looks better than DLAA in my option because it gets rid of some z-fighting and some weird looking shimering noise (even tho it adds some hardly visible pixels trails at the edges)
DLSS is some freaky magic shit when it's well implemented.
DLSS Qualify CAN'T looks better than DLAA because the algo is the same, DLAA is just 100% rez scale instead of 67%.

@@raresmacovei8382 it's not as simple, DLSS is what the AI thinks the higher resolution should be looking like, not the real information and therefore can looks different depending of the quality of source...
In the hair comparison part, having not enought info make it get rid of some issues (flickering, sandmoving pixel looking like, z fighting) in the inner part of the head (and the outer part trails aren't noticeable unless you zoom) which in my opinion looks less gamey, I doesn't say its perfect or better in general, just in the case (in my opinion)
We are all watching it trought youtube compression, and i'm watching the video at 4k on a 1080p monitor, so it might not look the same on your end and not even the same in game
You better not try Dead Space's DLSS, that takes a huge nose dive in texture quality if you turn it on due to devs implementing it weirdly.
There's a fix for that (though it should never have been necessary). Check digital foundries video on the PC version and it goes into how to fix texture quality.
Of course I'm going to pick XeSS-IV, as well as with the word Massive, I can sound more British, so I can better roleplay as a British school boy with a gun... with a magic wand.

I have always thought that the DLSS ultra performance looks a lot like it was shot on an iPad camera especially the way it tends to blur some certain details and make everything look very grainy
The game has a really old dlss version which was odd.

@@olivercharles2930 I've listened to too many pc gamers complain about spending too much time optimizing a game with ridiculously specific specs (sometimes just to get the game to run in stable at all) rather than just enjoying the game. Not everyone cares about trying to cook your machine everytime you turn the damn thing on.

I mean... upscaling is something I buy high end cards to avoid at this point. I really hate the artefacts and they stand out to me, I envy people who can't see them and I am not sure if it is a combination of image manipulation being a big part of my job or my being on the autism spectrum; but it isn't there yet for me.

Upscaling or not, any sort of temporal reconstruction will often result in the same visual artifacts and issues that I think you're talking about. (ghosting, disocclusion, general softness in motion, etc).
In my experience, the best 2 options are to use DLAA (which is still temporal but a lot cleaner), or no AA at all with supersampling/downscaling (perfect visuals for an extreme performance cost).
That being said, I've found that in a lot of games, even DLSS quality can produce a cleaner image than a lot of the terrible TAA that's often used.
Yeah lol, What's the point of getting a high end card If I'm going to introduce extra delay or visual artifacts! The natural sharpness of an image always looks better than artificial upscaling any day of the week to me.
I use them on 4090 just because the fps increase is nice and my eyesight sucks so can't tell difference with or without dlss

Idk why I would want to enable upscaling when I have a good enough pc that can run the game fine. Enabling it just makes it look noticeably worse (especially FSR, yes: 2.0) for a performance boost I don't need.

Sad to see since the current unoptimized state of the game is such a great example (or ominous foreshadowing) of what upscaling can do or will be used in the future. Like development time for optimizing the game could just be cut in favor of content and fast releases then just rely on upscaling.

@2kliksphilip Upon rewatch, the whole preamble section before the comparisons was too long and not relevant (the one with Hagrid and Voldemort), the rest of the script is actually very tight. Seems the jokes work better as asides rather than interruptions? Or maybe that section was just there to stretch the retention graph, idk

As a trans woman, I don't think playing HL makes you a horrible person or transphobic, but I do think it is important to discuss how JKR is responsible for spreading a lot of very harmful and reactionary beliefs online that are hurting people who are just trying to live their lives. And it shouldn't be ignored or buried.
People say, oh, keep politics out of my vidja games. But politics is very entwined with the media we consume, really. It is hard to seperate the two. Personally, people can play there silly Harry Potter game or whatever, but I see no problem in people trying to start discussion about what the author has done and how that interacts with the works she puts out and the way she behaves to people who are frankly innocent.

Were women's rights not political? Women's rights is one of the most major political issues in modern history, from the days of the Suffragettes to the present day where many countries will not even allow women to do things like get a passport without a male relative's permission.
Trans rights are political, and everyone is entitled to their on opinion on it, regardless of how evil you may think they are for having it. Even people like myself who only observe biological sex, not gender, and so don't believe trans women are even women, are a lot more common than you may realise, and they aren't bad simply for having that opinion.

Just because there’s a political fight for them to be observed and respected, doesn’t mean they are inherently political. If transphobes weren’t fighting back against trans rights, there’d be “politics” surrounding them at all. And let’s be clear, you don’t “observe biological sex,” you just make assumptions based on how people present themselves and get all upset when they’re not cisgender.
You’re entitled to your opinion. If your opinion is “trans people aren’t valid,” or “trans people don’t deserve gender affirming healthcare,” or “trans men/women aren’t men/women (respectively),” then you’re an asshole and a transphobe. It’s simple as.

not that it matters really but im a massive fan of the channel and have watched nearly every video you’ve made (and for like a year i used to play your three sleep videos to help me sleep,, which might be a bit weird but it worked and now those videos make me sleepy) and i wish you could be more vocal about calling stuff out.
i dont care that you played the game or particularly(?) that you made this video since its interesting / technical and not something other people are making. but theres a lot of transphobia in the replies to comments from people coming to your defence. and maybe you should like. make your stance clearer (whichever it may be). you’ve done it before with your women and cs video, and im not asking for an entire video but itd be nice for some comment.
but i am also kinda disappointed that you played it. especially with no like disclaimer for the harm jk causes, as well as the anti semitism present in the story, while making harry potter related jokes and such throughout the video. i’m still going to watch your videos and like them, i get that not everyone is going to be as vocal on trans issues as a trans person, but its a bit of a blow as a fan.

I think him playing it sucks but i also dont see it as the main issue. my bigger issue is people in replies to these comments saying shit like 40% and other anti trans sentiments as a direct result of him not vocally addressing the context of the game.
