That's actually the second half of the riff that Jason originally composed for MFOM but Metallica decided they'd only keep the first two chords and build around that. Jason often brought back that second half when jamming onstage. In the Cunning Stunts live show during the Bass/Guitar Doodle segment he plays the whole riff with Kirk soloing on top of it and it sounds great, actually.
@@ibriselric2 I've had an idea to tune the E-string on my bass up by three semitones (to G), and use that as the root note instead of the open A-string for that riff you're referring to (i.e. the intermediate bit which Jason played live and also in a TH-cam video a while back, but which didn't make it onto the album version). I haven't tried it out yet though as I'm nervous of snapping the string! (I could downtune the A-string to G instead, but then it wouldn't be available as the open-string root note for the first riff.)

I would really love this version of the song with limited vocals spaced out throughout it. So it’s still an instrumental but occasionally James comes in with a few verses. Would be a bit like Outlaw Torn, with some elements of To Live is To Die and with heavy emphasis on Jason’s bass part which harkens to Orion.
