Gladys and the Pips definitely own this song...hands down.. more enegry and for me, just more soul than Marvin's. I read there was some politics and great consternation when Marivn's version was released. Gladys felt she and the Pip version was undermined.

Clarification, per Wikipedia (but GLADYS will aways be No.1 for me!): "Written by Norman Whitfield and Barrett Strong for Motown Records in 1966. The first recording of the song to be released was produced by Whitfield for Gladys Knight & the Pips and released as a single in September 1967. It went to number one on the R&B Singles chart and number two on the Pop Singles chart and shortly became the biggest selling Motown single to date.
The Miracles were the first to record the song in 1966, but their version wasn't released until August 1968....
The Marvin Gaye version was the second to be recorded, in the beginning of 1967, but the third to be released.... Motown founder Berry Gordy finally agreed to its release as a single in October 1968, when it went to the top of the Pop Singles chart for seven weeks from December 1968 to January 1969 and overtook the Gladys Knight & the Pips' version of being the biggest hit single on the Motown label."

Jamerson's P-Bass putting his indelible signature stamp on another unforgettable Motown piece. When the time comes for mankind to stand in judgement, there will stand the incomparable James Jamerson receiving the honor and the recognition that he never received in this life, for the joy and happiness he delivered from Detroit to every corner of the world, with bass lines that influenced nearly every recorded song from 1961, until the end of time! May he rest in peace.👑 🎸🎵

I was bartending in nyc around 2007 and the owner didnt me allow to play hip hop. It killed me so i did the next best thing and play the soul station and this song always reminds me of how much better i am now. Id have never heard all the motown and soul songs if not for that. Beautiful music. ❤️

well, I say. He wrote it, so had he not, no one would be building upon it as it would not exist ;-) -- This is an awesome arrangement. I'm actually trying to learn it (sing) ... In conclusion, it reminds me of song Stormy Monday (blues song by T-Bone Walker). Great song, but Bobby Bland does the definitive version of that song. T-Bone created it ;) like Marvin did this one.
