Neat little town. Been quite a while since I've seen a Piggly Wiggly grocery store. So much history, so little time. Lol. Little towns have the nicest people also. 👍👍🙋♂️

We were in Helper beginning of September and fell in love. We were shocked you didn’t stop and see either of the two refurbished ol time gas stations! Inside the one at the top of the street, the Kodak moment area, was full of old cars, Coke/cigarette/snack machines. Down from the other station the big statue was Helper’s version of “Big John” as in the Tennessee Earnie Ford song Sixteen Tons.
We stayed as the Blue Cut Campground, great owners and cute campground, for two weeks and still didn’t get to see everything!
9 Mile Canyon and the petroglyphs was phenomenal!

I enjoyed being reminded of the old days with the old buildings. We didn't have a Walmart, but we had Western Auto which this town also has.

WOW - This place looks like something out of a movie set. Fantastic museum. If you ever go back, make sure you hang around to early evening to get shots of the neon signs lit up.

Loved staying at the historic Conoco airbnb in Helper, totally worth the stop.
That blue glass build you passed up, that's the kiva club and the worst building in helper. My friends dared me to go into the basement if the kiva and I did. Then I came out just speechless, I felt the energy in there. I've also seen orbs and dark shadows fallow me around as a kid. I always felt protection around me though.

Now you're in my stomping grounds. If you like ghosts, ask anyone around Helper about the legend of the "white lady," who is often seen up in the old mining area up Spring Canyon. If you have time, it's worth a drive up towards Latuda. You can still see the remains of coal tipples, old homes, etc.
Sounds like a good place to visit. Thanks for recommending it to Russ and those of us who are following him on his travels.

Well that was cool!! When you turned the van around and there was the mountain!! A (Oh Wow!!) moment for sure.. I think that town was going back to the 40's and 50's. I wonder if kids cruised the streets at night.....Stay safe
You mentioned a canyon you wanted to see, but didn't have time. I'm thinking 9 Mile Canyon, which isn't too far away! Anyway, thanks for the tour of Helper! I've been past there several times, but never stopped in. Now I know what I've been missing! Nice little town!

I completely agree with you what a picturesque town.
The refrigerator is not an ice box. The compressor was on top. We had one when I was a kid in the 1960’s.
My wife's nickname as a kid was Coolerater. Coolerater was a company that made those fridges with the compressor on top.
Cool town and museum Russ. I love when places restore old buildings and upgrade them instead of tearing them down. In my old hometown, the housing market has become lucrative so people are taking homes that were built around 1952. They are restoring the hardwood floors but also upgrading the electrical, plumbing, roof and furnace. They are also upgrading the kitchens and bathrooms.
Wish more cities and towns were in a position to do that. I am assuming that these improved homes are privately owned as I have never heard of a city doing this. I love when old homes are updated.
@@dalekundtz760 yes, They are all privately owned. Some of them are rentals that the owners have updated and sold.

I thought the exact same as you when you mentioned the flower pots, chairs and tables...just like the town I grew up in. The good old days...lol. Can't wait to see where you are heading to next. Thanks for the video. LOVE Helper. Great vibe, amazing buildings. Two years ago, they set up a stage on Main Street and the Utah Symphony performed for the town.
Thanks for highlighting our town. Next time make sure to get some rock chips at the Balance Rock Cafe and anyone there can tell you some of the great places to visit around Helper. There is an RV park and camp area if you had driven down Main street a little farther you would have seen it. Also the first Friday of the every month there is an event on main street throughout the summer and our Art Festival at the end of the summer is wonderful. The light parade the first weekend of December is fantastic too. Fireworks in the snow can't be beat!

Learning about all these sweet little towns that are reviving their community is great. Love to go through these types of towns as you find they have amazing arts and crafts for sale. I love finding a gem. Maybe the family will take a trip to this town next summer😀 Thx Russ!
Thank you for the trip down memory lane sir. I used to live in helper back in 1988 and 89. What you see on film right next to the museum is a hotel that used to be a mission for transients and homeless people/families. We would usually give room and board for single women or women with children up to 6 weeks, and single men 1 to 2 weeks. This was a temporary stop allowing them to possibly get back on their feet or to get from one place to another. The mission ran strictly on donations from around Carbon County. Monetary and food donations were taken and used 100% for the mission and transients. We also had a small general store on the bottom of the hotel. The general store also operated off of donations from around the county and we sold used items much like a Goodwill today. I see that the Avalon hotel has changed quite a bit. When I was there it was actually a running functioning hotel but in its original configuration from I believe, the 1920s. It was very old and creaky and and still used heat from old water/steam heaters in each room. There has been a lot of change but I still notice a lot of the town is still the same. Thank you again sir.

I work at the coffee shop. He passed by it but honestly such a pretty place to work.
It's nice to see a small town revitalized instead of deserted.
I think it's kind of sad to see them completely gut the buildings like that. All the history inside is gone when they do that. My favorite part of the museum was just seeing the inside of the building. The wood doors with transoms on top, the steam radiators, the old push button light switches. All that good stuff that is gone when they gut the building down to the brick. But I guess it's better than tearing the buildings down. There is a lot of history in that town.
I agree. Such a shame to gut the interior of buildings. This is not true preservation. At least they don't completely tear them down.
@@TK-jc9by On that subject I saw a news video on TH-cam recently about a couple in Colorado who bought an old 1930s bowling alley still in original condition with manual pin setting machines and the original signs still on the walls from when it closed in the 1960s. It's an amazing time capsule. Then I heard the interview with the owners talking about their plans and wanted to cry. They were talking about ripping stuff out and opening it all up to make it all bright. I thought, no, no don't do that. Just leave it the way it is. People today just don't understand what historical preservation means.

Thank you very much for this video, I absolutely love helper, Utah. There’s a lot of great history there. The Tallerico’s were (are) a famous family. Coal mines were the main source of income for the valley. Such a beautiful town.
Cool little town! I knew you'd like the museum. The volunteer in the gift shop when I was there pointed to a house up on the cliff, where she was born. "So you've lived here your whole life?" I asked. "Not yet!" she said.
Very cool little town, the only thing missing is a Sears & Roebuck store and a Woolworth's Five & Dime store....
That Main Street is so gorgeous. So clean and tidy, the curbing and sidewalk all nice and neat with all the flower boxes. So nice to see a place where people take pride in their town. No litter and you can tell there is a lot of life in the town and yeah that mountain backdrop !!! Very impressive place great video

I live on the North End of main street in Helper, I love my house built in 1911! I love living here! Wouldn't change it for the world. We have had a few music vids made here, Ghost Adventures was here in May of 2021. Norman Reedus and Keanu Reeves were here recently too. And if u would have stayed on main Street instead of getting on the freeway, there is an RV park down there. 😀
My hometown, yes it's haunted and I'm happy they prove it. I'm not afraid of the dark shadows anymore because Jesus Christ is my best friend Amen. Great Video for sure Amen 🙏👏🙌🙏.

It seems, Russ, every video I’ve watched of yours today I’ve been there when I was still trucking! Lol! Talk about a day for memory lane! Thank you! I’ve traveled Hwy 6 there in Utah a lot as well…on down to Soldier Summit and beyond on my way back to Texas! Back then Hwy 6 was under heavy construction and it was a real pain to travel! Helper looks like such a neat town! Im sure I’ve driven through there at some point or another. I’m into history and LOVE all the old buildings. Thanks for sharing! ~Jim~

Main street America is awfully quiet nowadays. Nobody really shops there anymore. The malls killed the downtowns. Then, the online shopping killed the malls.
Back until about somewhere in the seventies these little towns were busy.
Give me the old days when you could go downtown for the shopping and dining and just hanging on a corner watching the world go by.
I lived in Helper when I was a kid. They have done a great job preserving its character.
LIVED THERE 1970S ON POWER PLANTS....COACHED IN FERRON...BASEBALL N ALLSTARS....2ND IN STATE GREAT KIDS..

I loved the tour of this vintage town. I thought there was a creeper sneaking up on you when I saw the shadow figure hovering over the flowers on the sidewalk. Your camera looked like an ax so I thought it was an ominous shadow figure getting ready to strike, until I realized it was only you, your own shadow. Lol It is a cute town. I don't wear hats but I thought it would have been fun to take a closer look at the vintage ladies hats in the museum. They would have been more interesting than the old TV's:-) All in all, it was a fun tour:-)
I live in Helper, right outside of Spring Canyon. Sometimes I take for granted how beautiful the views are. My house is surrounded by mountain backdrops.

If you headed South on main Street about 1/4 mile from where you turned around you would see an amazing RV Park. Also stop by the rock shop at the North of town. They have lots to see at very reasonable prices.

Russ, you missed one of the nicest RV parks we have visited. Castle Gate RV Park is only about a half mile from downtown Helper.

I used to live here back in the late 90s-early 2000s. I had lived in a few of the buildings on main street, as well as the blue duplex right next to that price river trail park. A good 70% of the buildings in the area were completely abandoned or in a state of disrepair. Despite that it was beautiful, there were always sunflowers, wild roses, apricot trees, the monarch migration to look forwards to every year. The Christmas parade. I do miss it. I was feeling nostalgic and went looking to see if there were videos like this. My god how it's changed, but I'm glad to see it's still beautiful. Wish they would have put some actual theaters or something in, seems to be all art. Glad to see the old bar, clinic and liquor store are in the exact same place, as is balance rock eatery. Those and the bank were about the only businesses that existed on the street around that time.
The whole place when I lived there, was a "ghost town", not just because of how it looked and it's state, but just about every building had some sort of history and was haunted. The Avalon house, I lived there, was free temporary housing and a thriftshop at the time. People would see brief faces or hear someone in the halls but never saw anything. The old hotel called new house hotel, we lived there too, in the kickass old speakeasy underneath it. It looks different now, used to be a little shack extension with a big cafe sign. But those stairs on the side are the entrance and it used to be one of the coolest places I'd ever lived, it was haunted as well.
Though I'm a bit sad, that entrance used to be a shack, a big patch of grass, and then a staircase leading to a second door. My beloved pet rats were buried there and it was a natural sunflower and tomato garden when we left it, I think It's a shame they tore that out and took the swing bench.
Helper utah still remains one of the coolest places I've ever lived. I left there back around 2005 and still always think about it and want to go back. It was just so serene.
ahhh i miss home sometimes! and they gutted that building 30 years ago. turned it into the mission. they have done movies there. it is more the railroad town but everytown near it is mining.

Thanks for going to helper unfortunately you left a lot of the town out he didn’t bother to look at the gas station at both ends of the Town that have all been redone and didn’t catch the motorcycle museum they have there and the malt shop then you have to see this place at night it’s like a little route 66 and just Down the street it’s a beautiful campsite you can walk from the campsite to town

The signs in your videos are readable, and I mean in a really good way. I watch quite a bit of those travelling videos, and some youtubers have opened the shutter of their cameras so wide, that everything is somehow at least in part affected by motion blur, unless you look directly dead ahead. But closing the shutter instead is a good thing, because especially those "drive-by" videos necessitates, that I have to stop the video if I want to read the signs or look at a specific detail. That is impossible to do with motion blur. So: Thanks, buddy... closing the shutter of your camera is making things much easier to see :)
