Great vid, the Machop line has always been one of my favorites to use, while Guts is nice to at least not worry about the attack drop from burns I feel like on the Machop line it's pretty much overkill since you can just raise your attack with Bulk Up, For Pokémon like Raticate or Swellow I can see some value in it but them being frailer then Machamp could be an issue (plus setting it up is annoying even in later gens that have the toxic and burn orbs since those items are usually locked behind the post game battle facilities) now Quick Feet on Machamp would probably be a lot better if it got it as an ability, I mean yeah it doesn't block the attack drop from burn and while it blocks the speed drop from para the 25% chance not to move is risky but pre poison is easier to pull off and 50% more speed could let Machamp handle some battles at a lower level with bulk up set up...but that's just a what if. No Guard in future gens is what I prefer on Machamp, 100% accurate Dynamic Punch and Rock Slide/Stone Edge is too much fun
No Guard looks like fun yeah! Removing the accuracy component I would have gone for Cross Chop 100%. Guts was a lot of fun to explore, but I did mess up. Sticking with the Burned Guts strats I should have used Facade over Return for more base damage. Quick Feet would be interesting, but that paralysis chance to not move is too nasty for me. Maybe Ursaring or someone can change my mind on that!
oh yeah I forgot about Facade it's on Five Island and since I mostly Nuzlocke FRLG I consider my run done after the Round 1 League(mhmm maybe I should do a Round 2 Nuzlocke soon) but yeah a Quick Feet Teddiursa/Ursaring is fun to use. I traded an egg to Soul Silver once on a new playthrough because I wanted to have one as early as possible and it was pretty great using Quick Feet in the early game to cheese Whitney's Miltank with Headbutt flinches, granted I don't know what speed threshold you have to meet at that point since I was still learning about IVs and EVs at that point and I think maybe either I was blessed with a max speed IV or I gain a lot of Speed EVs before Whitney for that to work( could be something to test when you get to gen 4 runs)@@Eggsceptional
@@lumineinfinitussilverkagat8094 That is absolutely something I'll be testing once I break into Gen 4. I'm making those kinds of resources for FR to improve my routing and it'll lay some good groundwork for breaking into other games. Round 2 is a lot of fun, but in a Nuzlocke situation I can see if giving some.. additional challenge we'll say :)
I've been having this debate lately (mostly internally). I've decided to check my ranges with Kick. Of it one shots where Punch wouldn't then it's clearly the better choice. But if Punch can KO then it's better. I've always been so detracted because of the accuracy! It's been fresh on my mind lately, thanks for the input :)

I'll just throw the old "who's that Pokémon" silhouette challenge at you until the end of Mt.Moon. Doable? Sure! Nobody will ever know what I'm running until it's too late.. mwahaha.. MWAHAHAHA
Guts is a huge power spike when you play with a level cap (hardcore nuzlocke). Since your metric is run length and you still need to grind for later battles, it's just easier to brute force powerlevel...
I've been receiving suggestions lately for team style challenges where xp will be much more difficult to manage. I'll also be trying my first Nuzlocke in the not too distant future :)
I like how the poison made that weedle battle a race to the finish, but with the 2 Leers and Guts for when you get poisoned, it seems like you can just outpace it. I wonder if a third Leer would be worth it for consistency
I did test the third Leer but found that it resulted in an equivalent amount of turns, roughly speaking. I landed on the 2 Leer strat and hope for a crit :)
@@Eggsceptional Ah, cool. I were they both about equally as successful? I wonder if, despite taking roughly the same number of turns, if one is riskier than the other. I guess not if the rate of poison stings and getting poisoned is held the same
@@Chronoflation I wonder, I have some literature on the Gen 3 AI I just haven't gotten to giving it an in depth read. I'd be interested to see how it prioritizes things to see which is riskier. That's true, and sometimes there's no beating that RNG. 10% chance poison from Poison Sting feels like 95% chance sometimes!
I used the OU Bulk Up set Machamp and the OU Standard Dragon Dance set Dragonite on the Pokemon Damage Calculator and set both Pokemon to lv 50 instead of 100. I added 102 base power return and Facade to the Machamp's moveset with the status being "Burned". Return deals 65.1-76.7% damage, whereas Facade deals 88.9-105.2% damage. Both are in the guaranteed 2HKO range, but Facade has a very small chance to OHKO. 140 Base Power, Guts Boosted Facade is no joke. Edit, did this with supposedly 0 Bulk Ups used. but if you did 1 bulk up, Facade becomes a guaranteed OHKO, where Return becomes a range to OHKO.
You are correct! Facade would have been a better option to use with a Guts Pokémon over Return. It's funny because in planning for another Pokémon I have Guts boosted STAB Facade planned, but totally spaced on it for Machamp. Could've, would've, should've. Thanks for putting in the time to do the calcs :)
Eggcellent sir, truly eggcellent, but we gotta talk about that 1st run. oh my Lord Helix in the sky that first battle with Bulbasaur and then that Weedle, seriously sweet Arceus that was rough, that wailord breeding with a skitty rough (legit egg move group breeding if you don't know) fighting types always seem to suffer in Gen 1 games and as we just saw in the remakes as well, its all the poison types for a start, a 5th of the game is poison and thus resists your STAB and then you get psychic types that just wreck you, at least mankey didn't get you this time. I am honestly impressed it was only 50 resets on the first run and oh my wow 0 for the 2nd run and getting ahead of Dragonite and Tyranitar is most impressive. your move set choice wasn't a big surprise if I may be blunt, but on a Machamp it is what works so why not, I am surprised you tried dig though, I know you don't favor the ground moves as Fire red has less use of them outside of STAB of course (you'll like Magnitude on Golem when you run it). Brick Break is such a good move, maybe the best fighting move in the game outside of bulk up of course and the fact that its a TM you can buy makes it even better. did you consider having a spare TM or 2 of it, use Cross Chop for something bulky and then teach brick break over it, I have to thank you for this one, I am not long away from a fighting only run and will only have a Mankey until after Misty and I have cut and seeing how machop ran has given me ideas as to how to make the run a little easier. if I run it soon enough I'll let you know how Mankey runs and advise where needed, its also where I am trying special Hitmonchan and can give you the painful info for that one too
Those 50 resets in the first run, though rough, were quite instructive it seems! I have to say there are some straaange egg groupings. I was really happy with that Round 2 finish. I know that my moveset might not have been too much of a shocker but I really feel there aren't going to be a whole lot of options that surpass "set up and sweep" type strategies. Especially for overall time investment. I love the Ground typing I wish it had more function in FireRed, more specifically in the late game. With STAB it'll be super, but with Levitate and all the Flying types it's rough for Ground. I'm glad that this run could give you some ideas for your upcoming challenge! Machop definitely needed a little bit of a boost to get through that early stretch. I'd highly recommend getting Primeape early :P I'm eggscited to hear about your challenges! Particularly the special Chan. We've discussed that one a fair amount.
@@Eggsceptional instructive is an understatement, you went from being repeatedly knocked out by Weedle to cleanly sweeping the whole game, thats no small thing, the Big Mac run about as well as it could of done, I don't think there is anywhere where you could shave off any time, if you ever did an egg move run with it and it had a decent egg move for the early poison types, you might, but it wouldn't be much. and yeah the egg move groupings are really weird, it has given me the above expression for describing how rough something in Pokemon can be. it gets weirder, have a look into how to breed curse on Farfetch'd, weird. set up and sweep with sub works, I can't fault it for its effectiveness, I'm not a fan of having only 2 attacking moves though, the PP issues speak for themselves and every so often you get walled because of it, rock and fighting seems to be perfect for your physical attackers at least. have you found something as effective for your special attackers with calm mind, I assume psychic and and ice would work best. Ground when it is STAB is useful for a good chunk of the game thanks to neutral damage, when you run Golem and you are using magnitude and rollout, you'll see what I mean. I know you'll roll with rollout and defense curl, its set up in its own way, but differently so. have a look at Pokemon with Ice Ball as well, it is the ice type rollout after all, you'll like it. I shall take your advice there sir and what I have learnt from your run, as I am running a team I'll get a lot more optional battles in, Primape will be my lead for the run, it will absorb all the EV's I don't want on the rest of the team, Poliwrath and Hitmonchan for special attackers and Machamp and later Hitmonlee will be the heavy hitters. I'll let you know how special Chan plays, hold off on doing your own until then, I think you'll need some warning before you try
@@jptheflipper3825 I feel like starting fully evolved might knock a few minutes off having that power boost here and there. I wouldn't have to grind as much before Misty either. We'll find out eventually, I know we will! Looking up the breeding I'd say your chameleon Smeargle would be the way to go for that one. My goodness what an odd chain. I feel like for the special attackers it would be some combinations of Psychic/Ice Beam/Thunderbolt that usually round out a Pokémon. If they're lacking that type those are my usual HP typing too. I've been curious about Ice Ball but I haven't been able to find a Pokémon where it stands out to me. Except when I ran the Polis I guess I used it. DC with Ice Ball would be nasty in FR. Oh I feel like some forewarning before special Chan will be much appreciated. I've been keeping an eye on your comments about your teams looking for inspiration. I think I'm going to try getting a team run or two going sometime soon(ish)
@@Eggsceptional definitely a few minutes off, maybe even into the S tier, if you make past the weedle, Brock and Misty early enough. I would assume that VS would be against Golem, but I think against Primape would be more fun to watch. it is so weird, seriously who came up with Torkal and Farfetch'd, a mad man, probably the same one who came up with Wailord and Skitty to be fair. Smeargle is the better one to use for breeding like that, I gave all my Eevee's Curse and wish at once using that method. that reminds me, how do you feel about Wish instead of curse for some the eevee's if you ever run them, Curse isn't so good on some Eevee's I have found through theory crafting, it could work. thats a good trio of moves, pretty much any Pokemon with that combo is gonna do good, I have a feeling Nidoking with that combo, might top your A tier and get into the S tier maybe when you run it, despite the better physical, it is almost always a great special attacker, my current Nidoking in my newest run has HP fire, a favorite of my mine. Ice Ball wasn't as common, Rollout was the big one thanks to Emerald move tutors and how useful it is as a rock move instead of rock slide, at least ice types and many others got ice beam and blizzard as compensation, it would still be very interesting to see you use it and how well it gets used. Mudkip gets it as an egg move, might be useful for the starters VS. and Delibird too, better than nothing I guess. I'll let you know the results as soon as I got them. I'm very glad to hear you are taking inspiration from me for some potential team runs. I mention in our other thread of comments a few ideas for team runs, I have another, I'm on my 2nd of 2 sandstorm immune teams, in Fire Red that means rock, ground and steel types (cacturne qualifies as well thanks to its ability of course), you have some variety with those types, but early game is rough, the team is mostly slow and certain battles especially water types will be very painful, lets just say hoping hydro pump misses will be common throughout.
@@jptheflipper3825 I don't feel like that VS has to be against Golem. I like the way Scott's Thoughts painted it with the "immovable object meets unstoppable force" but I agree that pitting it against something more like Primeape might be good. Who knows though, I have serious doubts with Golem but I could be wrong. I feel like it's going to have to depend entirely on which Eeveelution I'm running. I'm guessing something like Vaporeon won't need any help at all cruising through the game with an egg move, particularly one focused on physical. I feel that Nidoking will perform very well once I get to it. I've been doing a ton of physical attackers lately though I need to mix in some special! Delibird would be a hilarious run but that'll be closer to Christmas (of course). Ice Ball might just make an appearance on Swampert in the VS video then. It accelerated the Polis in the early game nicely and helps with that darn Grass type. That's super cool. I have to work through these things one at a time so I'll check out your other response right away. I have an idea list which is in utter chaos at the moment. I'll re-organize it soon enough... Probably :P
Fighting types really do gain back a lot of ground as a solo run player from gen3 onwards, u could maybe have fun with like medicham for a FR run, since you can absolutely storm through with a physical set combined with its huge power ability, and early access to hidden power without a army of meowths in FR
The additional type coverage with Ground and Rock moves especially is fantastic. I was looking at Medicham, and that's going to be a super fun run :) Thanks!
Given that Machop to Machoke is relatively late I would have made Machoke to Machamp later than level 37. Lol at the weedle wall. I would have done Brock's camper fight too. I think I would make the secret power tm pretty much a universal pick up for all your runs. great move and many trainers learn it. I have to admit that I expected to see a lot more of earthquake. Though you are probably right not to use it.
I was initially going to set it around the mid 40s but the Universal Pokemon Randomizer didn't give me the option. I could have used my other software to just evolve him but then I wouldn't get the evolution animation in game. That's one of my favourite parts of all of Pokémon :) I feel like Secret Power is something that will be worth mentioning when I DON'T pick it up because it's so useful. Like the Body Slam TM in Gen 1! I had considered doing Camper Liam for the easy 402 xp, but after the Weedle grind felt it was more important to progress to higher XP density areas. I usually defeat Liam, he's convenient and usually easy. EQ I miss so much. With Agatha's Ghosts Levitating in Gen 3 it really hamstrings Earthquake. It's one of my fave moves of all time but in FR it feels so underwhelming :(
I find the tier list interesting since vs Pokemon are fully evolved from the very beginning. I wonder how much better Machamp would do if it was done in the vs format. Probably would beat all of these pseudo-legendaries, which is pretty crazy
I agree! The tier list is in need of a redesign and one of the biggest reasons that I did it in this format is because I wanted it to fill out faster. That way it looks prettier :)
I know it doesn't even appear until next gen, but I'm so used to modern competitive I keep wondering where Drain Punch is in these runs. Anyways, a great run for Machamp, honestly better than I expected. But I was right about the speed being rather punishing. Feel like if it was faster you'd need much less grinding, thus a faster time, but Machamp is just so slow with no real way to boost it, no Agility or anything. But pure power saves the day!
I have to admit, Machamp was darn good at smashing things. I do wonder what would have been possible with more speed, or access to Dragon Dance instead of Bulk Up. Drain Punch would have been fantastic!
@@shadowtitanx3962 Hmm.. I don't think I can wait that long. I do have ways.. mwahaha. But that's cheating and I prefer to keep it as close to the "vanilla" experience as possible.
Alright, long story short: old generation Pokémon games couldn't do as in depth of calculation as today's games, more specifically they couldn't handle decimal places. Your level plays a part in the damage calculation, but the game itself can't handle decimals places. It truncates them (or essentially acts as if the decimal never existed). Because it truncates the decimal instead of rounding, it ends up giving you disproportionate damage increases as you level up, at every level that ends in a 0, 3, 5, or 8. I have the most in-depth explanation of this in my Squirtle video before the Rival 6 battle. Let's say at level 10, Squirtles Bubble is doing 7-9 damage. It will do roughly 7-9 damage until you level up to 13.
Machamp was always shrouded in mystery for me. I couldn't get my hands on those trade evolutions! Primeape may happen soon! I've been wanting to do a run with him for a bit.
As far as Fighting Types go a VS between all the Hitmons would be fun to watch, I wanna say Hitmonlee would be the winner since It has the highest attack and speed of the bunch and gets Hi Jump Kick but from watching these runs I've learned that anything is possible (also Hi Jump Kick is 85 base power and 90% accurate in Gen 3 so that might not worth the risk over just using Brick Break but again that might but the edge Hitmonlee needs to win between all three)
I'm genuinely hoping that they dont end up being too similar of runs. There are only so many move options and I foresee a lot of the same 3 moves going into the end game with each. There's only one way to find out though :)
True, they could end up having similar sets by end game but I feel the early to mid game would be a lot easier for them. Plus their abilities would make some fights play out differently since Hitmonlee's Limber would make Dragon Doctoral Lance's Gyarados not use T Wave so setting a sub won't be as easy but Hitmonchan's keen eye would stop sand attacks making some fights more consistent, Hitmontop's Intimidate could make setting up against some lead Pokémon a bit easier like Heracross @@Eggsceptional
@@lumineinfinitussilverkagat8094 That's very true I suppose I was a bit too focused on the moveset aspect of the runs than stats/abilities/how the Pokémon will actually play. It'll be another fun video to investigate! Well, truthfully, they all are.
If I had live access to them I would. Stopping to check costs time I usually only do it when I'm trying to outspeed a Gengar or Charizard. I will keep it in mind though! I'm trying to find work arounds, but might just have to be patient for a bit longer.
I found that it was inconsistent below level 8, but at level 7 you learn Focus Energy so you end up with 80 total PP to try to deplete against 2-3 Metapods depending on how much damage you're willing to take from Metapods struggling. It was quicker to just grind!
Ahh that's super cool! I haven't used VBA in the past - my hardware is quite limited and it seems like mGBA gives the best recording results right now. I want to use Retroarch but my computer can't run Gen 3 at 4x speed in Retro :p let alone record
I cannot distribute ROMs no. I made this run in the Universal Pokémon Randomizer. You'll see on the first screen there's a box in the bottom right (as of today) that is the "Impossible Evos" box. Check that, change your starter as you see fit, and play on :)
It's that 80% accuracy that dissuades me SO much from Cross Chop. I would love to use it, but when I could easily miss 5/5 PP after 1 Sand Attack it scares me.
As a challenge idea I like it but that may have to wait until I break into future generations. Depending on the Pokémon some of the early generation movesets were absolute garbage. Magnemite/Magneton for instance would need to be in the 70s-80s at least to clear the 8th badge without a little helping hand for coverage. In newer generations, with options, I'm more than willing to try it out :)

Imo mega kick is better because its 45 stronger and only 10% less accurate.

Guts is a huge power spike when you play with a level cap (hardcore nuzlocke).
Since your metric is run length and you still need to grind for later battles, it's just easier to brute force powerlevel...

Brick Break is such a good move, maybe the best fighting move in the game outside of bulk up of course and the fact that its a TM you can buy makes it even better. did you consider having a spare TM or 2 of it, use Cross Chop for something bulky and then teach brick break over it,
I have to thank you for this one, I am not long away from a fighting only run and will only have a Mankey until after Misty and I have cut and seeing how machop ran has given me ideas as to how to make the run a little easier. if I run it soon enough I'll let you know how Mankey runs and advise where needed, its also where I am trying special Hitmonchan and can give you the painful info for that one too
Those 50 resets in the first run, though rough, were quite instructive it seems!
Probably :P

Interested to see how you do this since Machamp was trade evolution
The things we can do to Pokémon games these days are insane :)
International pokemon randomizer can turn on trade evolves so u then evolve at 37
A magician never reveals there tricks. However PKHex I believe you can do this and the universal randomizer definitely works.
That's one of my favourite parts of all of Pokémon :)
I feel like Secret Power is something that will be worth mentioning when I DON'T pick it up because it's so useful.

Funny thing: Machamp doesn't get Drain Punch until Legends Arceus.
@@shadowtitanx3962 Hmm.. I don't think I can wait that long. I do have ways.. mwahaha. But that's cheating and I prefer to keep it as close to the "vanilla" experience as possible.

I've watched thousands of pokemon challenge videos. I have no idea what a damage rounding threshold is
Alright, long story short: old generation Pokémon games couldn't do as in depth of calculation as today's games, more specifically they couldn't handle decimal places.
