The Stormlight Archive | Bondsmiths Are Overpowered (Part 2)

  • Bondsmiths are an order of the Knights Radiant from the Stormlight Archive. Within the wider Cosmere, you would think that some of the most powerful magic users would be, perhaps, Allomancers or Windrunners, or even Elantrians. For most people, these are the magic users that first come to mind when you think of overpowered people in the Cosmere.
    But, if you know Brandon Sanderson, you’ll quickly realise that he doesn’t always make things very obvious at first. I mean, even I had the same idea as I just mentioned when I thought of overpowered Cosmere magic. Now, however, after further consideration, I’ve come to realise just how wrong I was. It isn’t Allomancers or Elantrians who are the most powerful in the Cosmere. It’s the Bondsmiths from Roshar who hold near limitless power in their hands.
    Now if you’ve seen my previous video, you’ll remember how we established just what exactly a Bondsmith can do. If you haven’t seen my previous video, I recommend watching that before you continue with this one. Now that we know the full potential of the Bondsmiths, we need to put it into terms that can be easily understood. We need to properly conceptualize the true upper limit of a Bondsmith’s ability.
    So in today’s video, we’ll be looking at that and using it to determine just how powerful Bondsmiths truly are...

    Oh yeah they’re definitely broken. But i do think there’s a pretty good reason for it. Like you said, right now, without Honor, the bondsmiths are unchained. And we also know there’s only 3 bondsmiths at a time, and the Spren they bond are super picky or just hard to bond. So, Bondsmiths really are the best of the best people and the most “honorable” of them all, being able to convince literal splinters of honor to bond them. I think the bondsmiths were essentially a fail safe for if honor ever died, and he planned to uncap their powers for such a case. They are supposed to take his place temporarily and maybe one of them then becomes the next honor. I mean no other order has become “unchained” (so far) so there’s definitely something going on there.
    Haha my bad for the long ass theory, great vid as always homie!

    I definitely agree with you, a bondsmith can basically rewrite theirs, or someone else's spiritual aspect. And as Kriss says, like the twinborn of scadrial, surgebinders have two powers plus an effect. So maybe Dalinar will be even more powerful after he masters his powers.

    You are not missing on something, they truly are this crazy. I really can't wait to see more of them and see some fancy Connection manipulation from them (and also manipulation of other Spiritual Properties because why not I guess lol). Damn, just unlimited access to investiture is a fucking impressive ability, and it's such a small portion of what they can actually do

    The book was not out when making the video but the enchantress seems to be able to manipulate connection as she was able to connect herself with a tank of water, I think between a bondsmith and an Elantrian it just comes down to who acts first, probably the bondsmith due to more ease of access to there power

    • @TheJanitorIsIn
      @TheJanitorIsIn 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I don't recall this tank of water?
      There's a joke that Elantrians are "like Batman", in that they can "beat anyone with prep time." So that does suggest you are correct.

      @@TheJanitorIsIn from what we have seen the only limits on elantrian power are the time to write aon’s and knowledge.
      And I am pretty sure but not certain that the sorcereress connected herself to a giant tank of water so that she could control a bunch of midnight spores without turning herself into a mummy

    Bondsmiths are definitely a bit op. But don't forget. Elantrians are tied to their land and the farther they get the weaker their magic becomes. Also, alamancers can use metals anywhere. And Stormlight is only available on Roshar. Hard to say who is more powerful

    What if Odium makes his own Bondsmith spren to have an odious Dondsmith on his side. do you think he can? cause he has powerful spren like the unmade, can they have a Nahel Bond? (other than Yelig-nar who does not form a Nahel Bond but only bonds with a being through the consumption of his gem stone). If so, could he make one into a Bondsmith spren?

    • @GenZVall
      @GenZVall ปีที่แล้ว

      Idk how Odium would influence Dalinar, even if tempered by Honor. Honestly, if ANY Shard needs to be splintered, it's Odium. Cultivation should have worked to splinter that Shard rather than (spoiler)
      Giving it to someone like freaking Teravangian.

    Just some feedback from a new Sanderson reader (read Stormlight, Warbreaker, and am going through Mistborn), I suggest attributing a title or what we're looking at with attributing the artist. For instance, I look at 8:55 and wonder are those the two Bondsmith heralds? The uniform looks like Dalinar though.

    Navani should worry us more than Dalinar. She seems destined to embody the trope of Scientist Going Too Far. She discovered what happens when light and antilight are mixed the hard way, by blowing up the assistant running experiments for her. She is methodical and ambitious and potentially overeager to invent useful technology. For instance, she brushes off warnings about enslaving spren to make fabrials.
    Imagine if Thomas Edison had worked in a world where electricity was as dangerous as nuclear fusion. He could easily have blown up his lab too, when one of his employees experimented with wiring a light bulb to a battery 1,000 different ways. Now remember that Edison went on to harness Niagara Falls to light up an entire city at night for the first time. How much damage could a misstep cause on that scale?

      Idk man, maybe. I have my doubts- I don't see those as overt warnings. Maybe I just like her too much. Regardless, intriguing.

    This is why the idea of Dalinar going over to Odium (either willingly or forced) is so terrifying! The power of the Bondsmith unchained directed by the foresight and spiritual knowledge of Odium - yikes.

      I don't think he'd still be a Bondsmith if he did. If he'd turned in Oathbringer, the Stormfather would have revoked his bond before Dalinar could do too much damage; he wasn't very good at his powers at that point. If he loses the contest, he'll be dead, which breaks the Nahel bond. Odium wants the Blackthorn, not a Bondsmith, because Rayse is a dum-dum like that.

  • @MelonKnees
    @MelonKnees 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    I thought only Ishtar was "unchained" because he has the honorblade and is beholden to no one with Honor gone.
    Whereas Dalinar is not "unchained" because of his bond with the Stormfather.
    Am I misremembering this?

    • @ThePinkSora
      @ThePinkSora 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The way I understood it is, all Bondsmiths are unchained. The Honourblade only gives Ishtar the powers of a Bondsmith without a spren bond. Dalinar for example would technically be limited by the Stormfather, but we have also seen Dalinar completely disregard the stormfathers wishes. I.E. when he makes the Stormfather into a blade to use the Oathgate, or when Dalinar takes control of the storm to save Kaladin.

    • @givex2120
      @givex2120 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't think it's mentioned in the books but fans generally agree it refers Honor's limitations which are now basically gone

    • @RavensRants
      @RavensRants  2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      The restrictions come from Honor (who is now gone), not from the Spren that Bondsmiths bond. Therefore Dalinar is unchained too

    Spoilers-ish!?
    So I have a Stormlight 5 theory about the contest of champions!! My theory is kinda out there but hear me out, I beg you!!
    So I believe Kaladin and Szeth travel to Shinnovar and meet Ishi/Ishar but he’s unwilling/unable to help them. However, through Kaladin doing Kaladin things or Szeth simply following his oath they manage to bring Ishar back to Urithiru a little too late and find that the contest has already began and is going horribly for Dalinar. In a moment of desperation Dalinar opens a perpendicularity and Ishar’s mind clears temporarily!
    Upon seeing how the battle is going and racked with guilt for his betrayal of Taln, he intervenes and takes the Conection between Dalinar and Odium that bonds them in this contest!!
    Ishar then proceeds to fight in Dalinar’s stead but proceeds to lose the battle. So the contest ends with Taravodium victorious, having claimed Ishar’s soul, and uncertainty about the future of Roshar!!
    This allows us to look at Odium’s deception of Ishar, convincing him to experiment with the surges on Ashyn, which leads to the destruction of Ashyn in Stormlight Era 2 from Ishar’s & Taravodium’s perspective!!
