Confused about ions? We'll learn the difference between an atom and an ion. Ions are formed because of a net charge on an atom, because the number of protons and electrons do not balance. This means that the atom is no longer electrically neutral, but is a cation or an anion. We also talk about polyatomic ions.
A prime example of Einstein's Quote of
"If you can't explain it simply, you don't understand it well enough."
You don't think he explained it simply?
@@olovk3799 No, I'm saying he has a very thorough understanding of every topic he's done. This is shown as he's able to easily and very eloquently help students understand topics they were previously hazy on.
Or that our teachers don’t understand it so we have to go to youtube to figure it out.

For someone who knows absolutely nothing about chemistry (ME). And listening about in our classroom lectures and reading the text book, I've still get mixed up to a degree about how all the mechanics work together and why. So Hallelujah for You Tube and your many different presentation! You've made it easier for me to understand how all this is put together. Thank you for your time, passion, and your great teaching skills. You will be the place I go to in getting a better understanding of chemistry. Even though I am taking a biology class, we have chemistry mixed. Again, Thank you. you've made this so much easier for me. Keep up the great work. I will for sure pass your name around for those who are or may be struggling with the terms and functions of chemistry.
Thank you so much! Your kind comment means the world to me!
+Tyler DeWitt Yeah thanks for the thorough explanation! I can really understand better from your videos! Thanks!
+Jeff Munce Use your school's resource center too have if you have access.
Keep doing what you're doing man! Saving students one video at a time.
Jeff Munsen why such a long paragraph
when you learn more from a TH-cam video than in your chem classroom. I love American education
Lol!
if you really knew american education you would not be sating that
The Rook shes being sarcastic
its true for australian educatin too lol
The sarcasm
Young man, I am a retired HS Chemistry teacher, now working as a facilitator/teacher for a homeschool organization. You are my go-to guy (a superb teacher) after I teach my kids for a day. I'm glad you do what you do!
I've been so lost in science lately and I had no idea what anything was. THIS IS A LIFE SAVING VIDEO thank you for explaining so well
I've just read eight different explanations of what an ion is, and none of them made complete sense. Well done for your excellent explanation! Also, I love the way you use notes/drawings on paper for presenting it, it's refreshing and visually very interesting. Thank you for your excellent work!
"I JUST WANNA SAY YOU EXPLAIN SO WELL",TALK SO WELL ,TEACH SO WELL AND I JUST WANNA SAY THANK YOU,THANK YOU,THANK YOU,THANK YOU,THANK YOU,THANKYOU,THANK YOU,THANK YOU YOU YOU YOU YOU YOU YOU YOU YOU YOU YOU OOOOOOOOOO SOOOOOOOOOO SOSOSOSOSSOSOSOSOSO MUCH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
My science teacher is literally in love with you and makes us watch all your chemistry videos lmfao, I'm not complaining bc your video explains very well and I actually understand what you're talking about.
Damn, you are very good at explaining. Impressive.

I took Biology 101, I did not understand to the professor about Bio or Chemistry. I am learning a lot with your videos, even laughing in the middle of the learning, because how natural you teach and give vocabulary and how not forget the words. you are awesome. Thank you really are helping students who do not learn with the professor who are not any good.
An amazing lesson. I believe in your creativity to teach others. The nation needs educators like you.
I didn't think it was possible to ever understand Chemistry. OH MY GOD, THANK U SO SO MUCH. I took a chemistry course in my junior year of college and learned nothing. What seemed so hard is now easily understood. The value of a good teacher is PRICELESS!!! THANK YOU!!
I wish you were my teacher.
I felt that.

I'm taking Anatomy and Physiology as a General Education course after many years and returning to school. Your videos are tremendous. I'm a visual person and learn best that way. Your presentation, explanations, added examples, and clear description are a great help to my class. Thank you so much for taking time to present these.
You the best yo i swear to god, i lost all hope in chem until you appeared like a light shining down from heaven
Jovan Rodriguez righttttttt
if you are teacher, all of your students would get 100 lol
Oof
Oh yea daddy hit me harder
huh
English...is not a difficult language...
?
I have never taken Chemistry and I am a sophomore in college. My first Chem lesson hit me in the face on my Anatomy and Physiology class. I am completely lost due to no Chem background whatsoever, but thanks for your videos !! They really helped me a lot!!!!
English is not my native language and i dont have vocabulary when it comes to this staff like physics, mathematics' or chemistry. But thanks to you i understood it really fast and didnt even had to rewinding. Thank you !
Thanks a LOT! You make it really easy to understand!
SweCake CS:GO I
This is the best chemistry lessons I have ever taken. I never knew this is what ions are all about.
Thanks so much for this video.
I thank the heavens everyday for your existence. Without you, I would not be doing so well in chemistry. Thank you so much! :)
I just want to thank you for doing these videos. You have really saved me. I find Chemistry to be so intimidating and you have made it understandable for me. I literally don't know what I would do without these!
you saved my life 😭😭😭, our teacher is bad at teaching, but this was so clear and understandable. thank you soooo much!!
@Jeevani same ;-;, but im online
He's just so good at explaining chemistry concepts! This is what teaching really is
5:15 "cats have paws - and a cation is pawsitive" .. that's a good one
I am so happy I found this, going back to school after 13 years and I have a feeling I will be watching all of your videos. Thank you!
The thing I don't understand at all: Is why the !#@$ is classroom chemistry made SOOOOOOO much more difficult than it needs to be? This is more than enough theory for the average science non-chemistry major. Why is every chem class, including basic general chem, taught to the idea that everyone in the class is going to be chemists? Also, why can't chem professors teach more like this guy?
Two reasons 1) It is a screening/weeding out course (I didn't say I agree, but at least that's the way it used to be, and 2) Many people who are good at understanding science don't have the skills to teach it.
It's definitely not taught with the idea that everyone's gonna be a chemist. I think it's more so taught with idea of "Most of you are gonna fail anyway. So I'm not gonna waste my time dumbing it down for you."
Thanks, Tyler. There are so many videos out there that complicate the definition of an ion, but you gave the concise simple version. I want to understand batteries, and this is a topic that comes up a lot. My goal is to get a fundamental understanding of batteries. I don't want to become a chemist.
YOU ROCK!!! Making lives easier by teaching effictively!! PAWSitive:):)

TH-cam and all college students are so blessed to have you! We will be getting to know each other for the next six years of my life. Thank you so much for your videos i hope you know how much we appreciate you taking the time!
I was directed here by my bio professor and for good reason! Love your videos!
Its not an interesting video
Thanks a lot to this brilliant Teacher, who can make complex matters so easy by his simple and impressive presentation, especially for those who feared and hated Chemistry because of the unskilled teachers who could only reproduce the sentences in the book without the creativity and imagination to break into smaller chunks of chocolates.
He is indeed a blessing to all the Chemistry students, who were taught by boring teachers who just fly through the explanations, without the proper skills.
why tf is chemistry so hard
real
U r so 4 rl
It’s not even hard lmao
Understand basics it will be fun❤🎉
Its not hard just get the basics and you'll be good to go
The way you teach, is so easy to understand and just instantly "clicks"! Thank you so much!!
You made me learn this so freaking fast, thank you so much! Love your videos man! keep it up 👍🏻👍🏻
The way you explain Chemistry, makes the subject bearable to learn and understand! Thank you!
This guy explained in 6 minutes, what my professors were struggling with, in an hour.
Watching this video after 12 years lol...but still so understable nd helpful video (from india🇮🇳)
Professor Tyler, I don't understand how transition elements have multiple charges. For example, how can iron have a 2+ and 3+ charge? And what do the Roman numerals mean on the periodic table of ions?
Your help will be greatly appreciated, thank you.
I am a non-traditional student (read OLD) taking chemistry. I'm going to pass because of your exemplary teaching skills. Thank you, Tyler.
I love the teaching that you do here, let me first say that. But the representation of an Atom, with the Nucleus being orbited by Electrons, is such a distorted picture of what an Atom really is that I'm afraid it gives people the wrong idea of what an Atom really is.
I know that it's fine for educational purposes, but I wish educators would use a different way to represent a simple picture of the idea of an Atom that does't misrepresent the truth about Atoms and doesn't give people the idea that electrons can even be seen in there orbitals, as opposed to being in probability clouds.
Again, not your fault, but maybe you should at least remind people that this is a simplified picture of an Atom, and is not drawn to scale.
These are all good points. Usually when I show a Bohr atomic model, I mention that it's a very simplistic model of the atom and not entirely correct. I'm sorry I forgot to say that in this video.
Still, I think it's important to remember that we can always add detail, nuance and precision to students' technical understandings later on, but we have to initially present material in a way that is fundamentally understandable to young learners. Because at the end of the day, every explanation of science is a simplification. The common conception of a quantum mechanical model of an atom is a crude representation compared to the more sophisticated model suggested by, say, the normalization of electron wave function eigenvectors. Even that model is a simplification compared to what is known by the actual scientists performing the experiments, and the model changes with each new piece of information that is discovered.
But the point is, I feel we each rely on the simplification that is appropriate for our needs. A nuclear physicist needs to rely on the most sophisticated of models, and she is well equipped to understand and reason with it.
But for students just starting out in Chemistry, who can barely comprehend the concept of an atom, I don't know how much precision is needed. I'm not saying that it's not important,
I'm honestly saying I don't know how much is too much or not enough.
+Tyler DeWitt
Fantastic answer Tyler . A true teacher.
+m cornish shhhh he is busy
+Geoffrey Zoref oh com'on it doesn't matter as long as you get the whole idea.

Wish my teacher taught like you! The paws got me, I'll never forget now😂
This video has made it to 2021, it’s been 7 years and your still helping students this helped me in my test so thank you
You have successfully taught me something. You get a like.
Super helpful video. I'm studying some material and I keep coming across ions, with no clue as to what it is. Your breakdown on the topic was simple and easy. Thank you very much Mr. DeWitt.
Thanks allot all your videos are great. You should consider a teaching career and then come and teach at my school :)
You posted this in 2012- to day is Sept 2015-- Still learning from it- thanks for keeping it simple- I finally get it!
He makes everything seem more simple than what my teacher teaches and I love it!
11 years ago but still super effective thank you
6 minutes taught me more than in 10 weeks of online learning
you are seriously the best Teacher in the word and a life saver i'd rather watch your videos than my professors dull power points. It is so much easier to learn because you keep it interesting. Thank you so much for your help.
but isn' t a group of atoms called molecules or compound?
Yeah dude but like what he means here is ions: a group of atoms with a charge
omg thank you so much this helped me a lot reached it better than my chemistry teacher at school
Who's ded over the cat paws thing
i just LOL, so cheesy but definitely something Il remember now
Oni Ologeanu ikr XD
yeah lol
i will never unremember it its so CHEESY
I high fived my face lol
Tyler back at it again with the easy to understand explanations. My guy for real
Summary of this video! Hope this helps and good luck in school everyone:)
An Ion is an atom or a group of atoms (Polyatomic ion=group of atoms that have a charge) with a charge (when loses or gains electrons and does not balance protons or electrons) and is not neutral (no charge with equal amounts of protons and electrons). That atom can be called a cation (Positive Ion= More Protons Then Electrons) or an anion (Negative Ion= More Electrons Then Protons).
I still dont understand I get mixed up 😭😭😭😭
What
You are cry baby
Oh ok
Love your teaching style fron nepal

My chemistry teacher does not know how to teach well and some times get lost in the chemistry herself and i some how dont have a foundation in chemistry so watching this video is helping me to catch up this is a true life saver
Who else had to watch this just because of their science teacher 👁👄👁

You should get an award for best chemistry teacher. You make sense.
Wait, where is your camera?

I wished that my teachers were more like you and then I would have gained a better understanding of my physics and chemistry classes. Thank you for making it all perfectly understandable.
the way you are talking is cute and nice
Shahd Alshafiy agreed
You are amazing at explaining. Thank you so much for breaking it down for someone that chemistry is a foreign language
. Thanks again.
I love you very much!!! Thank you!!!! XD And I like tht, 'PAWSITIVE' lol
By far you are the best teacher for breaking down abstract ideas into understandable, witty and easy to remember ways. Thank you for that, God bless
Can your hands stay put on something
Manuval No! Sorry!
+Tyler DeWitt But can you turn them some how? because when you move your left hand in the frontal view the right hand in the top view is moving, it can be iritating.
+JMC CMJ really dude, the important thing here is the lesson not his hands
@@iishadowii7477 right? Honestly
Thank u for explaining in comprehensive English!!!! I didn't take chem but now I'm taking advanced biology and chem is the building blocks of it and u explained it sooooo well!!!! Ur the best tutor TH-camr!!!!
onion - a negatively charged onion
sundayraver its not an onion its an anion
I’ve watched two videos and I have already learned more than I have in my class!!! If I could give you 1000 thumbs up I would!
i love how he says "ahh-yon"
Hi good day..this is an easy way to recall what I have studied 25yrs ago hehe thank u Sir..
Hahaha Paws-itive hahah
I just started a Biology class. I had to learn about Ions. I was not understanding Ions at all until you explained it. Thank you!
I sat in my chemistry class for two hours and understood none of it, I watched the of these videos and understand completely! thank-you so much for making these and making it so I can actually understand from the beginning instead of just assuming that we already know something!!!!!!!
holy crap you make literally make chemistry very interesting and easy. please be my personal teacher
While in class, i usually watch your videos. Got a B on my last chem test, by purely watching your videos. The only task i got wrong was:
When propane gas C3H8 reacts with oxygengas in the air, it creates carbon dioxide and water
a) Write a balanced equation for this reaction
b) How much carbon dioxide is created if 100g propane gas is burned in air?
c) How much oxygengas has then reacted?
Do you have any videos covering this?
Yes , while the person who described the inaccuracy of the Atom, is correct , you are a great teacher and handle the criticism with poise. Please keep teaching . We need those like you who can explain the simplicity of chemistry . Those of us who are true researchers will find the bigger picture sooner than later. Besides, the real truth about chemistry is still an ongoing process. Keep up the good work . thank you
you're honestly the best teacher.
This is my first chemistry video ever watched, and I did not need to learn some basics to get what an ion is.
Very well explained, Thank you
Might as well not go to class, I learn everything on TH-cam! And you Sir really really taught me! Thanks
Tyler please make videos like this is its really important for students like me.
Love all your videos! I link them for my students who need extra help or missed a class!
Learned more in this 2 minute video then I did in my 2 hour lecture today. Thanks
every video you make helps me to have a better comprehension of these basic terms. thank you
Your videos help me to understand everything I've been trying to understand about science for the past year! Thank you for these videos!!!!!! Wish I would have found you while I was in the actual classes because you explain everything in 10 minutes that my teachers tried to explain in months! Studying for my TEAS now and finding your videos so helpful!!!!
As a gifted teacher myself I can see when someone else has it - you're gifted as a teacher
Just a good job. I was going through this with my daughter yesterday, and now that I see this, it will be much easier to get her up-to-speed. THANK YOU!!
I'm supposed to be focusing on this video to help with my chemistry class but the "cat-ion" pun got me good. thumbs up to the creator.
your lectures are excellent. Lucid and concise. I am, of course, already a subscriber. Thank you.
I just started chemistry this year and I really am loving your videos because they help me understand a lot better! thank you!!
Your teaching method and explanations are beyond wonderful. Very easy to follow and understand. Thank you so much!
Thank-you! I'm studying Chemistry, Biology and and Physics from home , and your videos really help me understand it in a simple way. In a way the books don't.
Thank you so much! done this 35 years ago...helping my G9 son... THANK YOU!
