yea, most of their cries are basically realistic versions of the originals. you can even compare them and notice the similarities despite having different sounds. i personally love them. i liked Haunter's in particular since the original barely sounded like anything. i prefer that toilet-like scream he makes lol
I like the fact that they modernized the older cries from gen 6 onward while still keeping them recognizable, but these sound more like the sounds you would expect animals to make. Pidgeotto is my favorite.
I honestly prefer it when Pokemon sound more like actual animals than just saying their own name. The only exception is Pikachu. I honestly can't imagine anything other than "Pika pika!" coming out of its mouth.
I have this headcanon that Pikachu, Mew, Togepi and the other Pokemon confirmed to say their own names are named after their calls rather than the other way around.
It also makes more sence. I mean, its strange that Pokemon cant talk or speak to human, but they call out their names, which they got from the humans? (In every language also another word)
I love Lapra's cry, Imagine that you are in the middle of the night on a cliffside, hearing the waves and the moonlight clearing the whole landscape, while all of the sudden you hear on the distance 8:08 and you see a lonely silluette of a Lapras passing by barely seeing a few details of it's body with the help of the moon, and suddenly a pack of them emerges from the water, attending the call of the leader, everyone singing along.
Now here's a question... Why didn't Game Freak use _these_ versions of the cries in Gen VI, since they replaced all the original LR35902 cries with "high-quality" ones? And why the flip does Pikachu get a special cry in Gen VI anyway? That's some right bull donk!
+SilverPirate Fox I don't think laziness would have stopped them, especially since these cries were not used in Colosseum and onward. It was probably a licensing issue, since the old Stadium games were developed by HAL laboratories, while the rest were developed by other companies. They probably couldn't afford to renew the license or didn't want to.
Pikachu actually got a special cry in Pokemon Stadium games, too. This video failed to include it. Pikachu from Pokemon Yellow will actually use the anime cry.
Tabaki the cries can just be revamped. they sound like better representations of the cries, much less digital than on the games. in newer gens they use sound effects that are more faithful to the motif if a mon is an animal or a specfic thing. Klefki sounds like keys literally jingling, mons that are dogs have barks and growls, etc. older mons have stranger cries compared to newer ones but the stadium cries sound like actual cries.
getting to go each game doing on average about 100 pokemon each instead of having to make 5 generations worth plus a batch of new ones will typically do that though won’t it?
Really good video. Also, I've realised why something felt off about Pokémon X and Y to me: the lack of entry animations. The Pokemon just emerge from their pokeballs and stand there, whereas in Pokémon Stadium they each have a unique animation when they emerge which at least shows a little bit of personality. Girafarig and Miltank are my favourites, and Donphan is cool too!
Not to mention the knockout animations are a lot less dramatic too. I suppose it's to help improve the flow of gameplay, but isn't that what the "Remove battle animations" option is for?
good news, old commenters, because i finally found a program that does this. using this video for reference because it is extremely tedious to do one by one and if i bulk extract they're all over the place lmao

I wish they had brought these back in XY. They're really a lot better than the remade versions they used for the game, IMO. Especially with a lot of the later cries being actual soundbytes and not just chipsounds.
Each Pokemon's SINGLE animation from 20 years ago is still more expressive and has WAY MORE personality than every animation combined for each Pokemon in the newer titles. Game Freak is lazy! XD
gamefreak didn't make stadium 1-2....and colosseum was made for another one company ...same as battle revolution that's why this cries were never used again
The cry’s are so amazing Bulbasaur sounds like a Frog so much and the rest are so cool they feel like actual animal sounds from growling to Roaring and gives it such realism and it’s AMAZING, this is why stadium 1,2 are my top favorite games and we need a Switch stadium
I need to know who the animators are because they did such a good job! You can feel how much fun they had animating all the pokemon, giving them a distinct personality!
Believe it or not, but it was handled by the OG N64 Smash Bros. team (HAL Laboratory). The animations were apparently so good that Genius Sonority repurposed them for Pokémon Coliseum, XD, and Battle Revolution.
I still see these graphics as the Best in N64, I mean come on look at the furr, the wings both feathered and bug, the attack effects and expresions, well you get the idea, is really good~ and very admmirable for it's time. aa the memories..~
Ha! I was just thinking through the entire video "man this must have been tedious as fuck to make", and then read your message at the end, seems I was right
The animations are snappy. They have weight and anticipation. Certain parts of the Pokemon tremble and shake to show impact and power. Their animations add so much to their personality. Even Rhyhorn, a pokemon made of rock, flares out shoulder panels. Goldeen blows a kiss. Machoke strikes a pose and roars. Even Spinarak gears up and shows the pattern on its back (which actually turns into a frowny face!) It's an absolute crime in GameFreak's 3D Pokemon games, that the animations are so bad. Imagine a boxing game where you and your opponent stand there with arms down or limply up, just swaying back and forth a bit with cheap smooth animation. Makes me sad and mad :(
The Pokéball animations and the sound design don’t get enough credit, but they were also top tier! The ball bounce in Stadium 1 and the flash of light as the ball halves separate in Stadium 2 really hype up each character’s entrance. GameFreak just has the ball make a gross *splorch* noise and the monster stiffly falls from the sky like a piñata on a rope.
Watching through this really makes me wonder what would happen if you took these animations and redid them on the modern models. Also, Igglybuff's little taunt was super adorable and 10 times better than the singular animation she has today
Considering how awful Mewtwo’s animations look on a new model in Battle Revolution, my guess is that some of them might not look the best, but who knows
Ah, when effort was put into games. Ninetales sounds so majestic, and I love how Noctowl's cry has it's cry mixed with the sound of an actual owl. They're not all perfect, like the chikorita line sounding like a bird, but you gotta appreciate the effort put in making these sounds and the animation
When the polemon was alive...it felt like such a treat, raising it to get it onto the big screen! And now Nintendo have been so lazy , taking the life out of that by just making them stand there ...they don't have their idle anymore? I feel like the modern plmn would look better in the shitty n64 graphics.. I mean at least they'd be their real size(🙄) if Nintendo can't even be bothered to make their own creation look real like it's supposed, or accurate to sizing in all its glory...what kinda franchise is that! They wouldn't send this lazy , half baked and heartless designing into their old games like stadium, so why now?? The pomemon don't even make contact when they punch each other..just sound effects like a comic or cartoon, but that's more believeable
God I love Poliwhirl's puffing up, Poliwrath's posing, Abra's little shake dance, Onix/Steelix's spinning limbs and whatever Forretress does. Not to mention Oddish and how it'll squash and stretch. I miss these animations.
Watching this made me realize that these games were great. They should've used these cries in the 3DS games instead of the re-recorded scratchy ones. I think Game Freak had to get live animal sounds for most of them and used those as a basis for the cries.
Playing Pokemon Shield right now, one of my laments from the game is that their still using those digitized cries instead of actual animal sounds like in Stadium. I remember my favorite sound from Stadium was Zapdos. Can't pin what real life animal thats based on, but I know I've heard it somewhere on Discovery Channel.
