  • My husky wants puppies? Do you think Kira the Husky wants to have puppies of her own? Kira experienced what is known as a false pregnancy in dogs , or a phantom pregnancy in dogs. What are the symptoms of a false pregnancy in dogs? Today we show you! This is something that is fairly common in unspayed female dogs. We thought we would take this opportunity to kind of show you what a false pregnancy in dogs looks like. As of the time we are uploading this, Kira is no longer experiencing these symptoms.

      Do you have to worry about male huskies humping random objects if you put of neutering them?

    • @animalobsessed1
      @animalobsessed1 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@NayrbRellimer Not generally. Some dogs have hormone imbalances, but as a general rule, natural hormone levels don't cause any unnatural problems.
      I have an intact male who humps occasionally, but nowhere near as much as the neutered male that I had in the past. Often times, humping is just another way to communicate, no different than a play bow or any other behavior. It's often used to get attention when they're feeling ignored, or in my dog's case, he does it to redirect attention from other dogs when they get too rough with/bully my younger dog.
      Of course sometimes he also gets horny, but it isn't a constant thing like a lot of people believe.

      Well it isn't uncommon for a phantom pregnancy to be used like that. That's essentially the reason they exist in the first place, to help other mothers raise their puppies. However it's not limited to only puppies, if there's a litter of kittens without their mom, a dog with a phantom pregnancy would be able to take care of them, and even give them milk (they should probably still be fed a proper milk for kittens tho hehe)

    • @animalobsessed1
      @animalobsessed1 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@TheDesiLiter Is it healthy to encourage milk production in a female that hasn't actually given birth though? I know with cows it isn't, so I assumed it would be equally bad for dogs.
      Don't phantom pregnancies (and the milk production) increase the risk of breast cancer (or something of the sort) and infections? I thought that was one of the major reasons it's recommended to spay females who frequently have bad phantom pregnancies...?

    • @TheDesiLiter
      @TheDesiLiter 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@animalobsessed1 I'm trying to remember your entire comment while writing this, so excuse me if I forget something 😅
      There is an increased risk of infection if the milk is left in.
      Yes its reccomended to spay females who frequently get phantom pregnancies, mainly due to the stress it causes her. Imagine thinking you have puppies and loosing them every 6 months. However, if it's a once in a while ocurrance, there's no harm in it, and you can save a few young lives in the process. If there is no kittens, or puppies without a mom close by, it is not reccomended to keep the phantom pregnancy going. Increased excersise and lower intake of food will speed up the process to make it end. If the female is hit very hard, there's meds you can get from the vet 😊
      Edit: about the cows, I'm pretty sure (but do not count me as a reliable source of information) it's unhealthy for them to be milked for the long duration they are milked, year after year with no proper break.

    • @animalobsessed1
      @animalobsessed1 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@TheDesiLiter Yes, overbred dairy cows producing milk every year is always bad for them. (Conventional farming reduces the life span of dairy cows by more than half.) There's more to it though.
      I know about the cows because I follow people who keep cows as pets. One of them had two cows that had never raised a calf. When they bought a bull calf, he started suckling on their cows, which triggered them to begin lactating. The owners needed to stop that from happening, because they said it would be unhealthy for them to produce milk without going through the proper reproductive process (pregnancy) first. Their vet told them it would cause the udders to become infected. (With a higher risk than the always-existing risk for dairy cows.)

    • @TheDesiLiter
      @TheDesiLiter 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@animalobsessed1 could be. Most of my experience with cows are from the industry, as I studied in a farm for a year that sells milk. Unmated cows were never around the calfs, so I never asked about it 😅 comparing completly different animals is no good tho. Dogs stem from wolves who all play a part in raising the pups (that's where the phantom pregnancies come from), while cows mostly keep to their own calfs. They might help protect from dangers, but they don't feed the other calfs.
      Edit: is it written calves? 😂

    I think it's really important to talk about this kind of thing and to make the distinction between what might seem like cute behaviour and the very real fact that dog breeding should be left to people who will do it properly. It's so important to spay and neuter our pets so they can live their best lives. I'm glad that Kira's symptoms were just false pregnancy and not pyometra, that is seriously scary stuff

    • @alyssapavlik2521
      @alyssapavlik2521 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Kylem every single dog should be fixed if you're not planning on breeding. it prevents multiple health problems, and accidental litters. dogs can be taken away and get a new home with the wrong people, dogs can run away, etc. there's no reason not to spay and neuter.

    • @animalobsessed1
      @animalobsessed1 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@alyssapavlik2521 The only health problem that removing a uterus prevents, is an infection of the uterus (pyometra) and uterine cancer. (duh!) The only health problem that chopping off testicles prevents, is testicular cancer. (duh!)
      By that logic, we should also be removing other body parts, so that those body parts can't be injured either.
      The trade-off for removing hormone producing body parts is an increased risk of canine cognitive dysfunction, obesity/lower muscle mass, spay incontinence (duh!), depression, fearfulness/fear aggression, and all manner of other unpredictable behavior consequences, because (and this really shouldn't come as a surprise) hormones influence behavior. Spay coat is also a disadvantage, though it's a less serious problem than those other things.
      Spaying/neutering is even worse when people don't wait until their dogs are full grown at around 2 years old (depending on breed), because then you ALSO increase the risk of bone cancer, hip or elbow dysplasia, and early arthritis. (Not surprising, since hormones help with bone growth.) I wouldn't call that "no reason not to spay and neuter". Anyone who claims there is "no reason" clearly hasn't done their research.
      Now, whether you consider those risks "worth it" or not, is a different story. Pyometra is indeed a real risk, so maybe avoiding one disaster in favor of another can be considered worth it. Testicular cancer on the other hand, is not a real risk. Treatment success for testicular cancer is extremely high, and thus I'd say there's no doubt, that you'd be trading a low-risk health issue for a bunch of higher-risk issues. That's why it's up to individuals to decide for themselves. Pretending the downsides don't exist, is not the way to go though.

On average she's gotten a phantom pregnancy 1-2 times a year. She also goes through her regular heat.

      If she's only showing the behavioral symptoms (so not lactating), it could be learned behavior. Something she does to deal with stress, too much energy, boredom, over stimulation, etc. I'd try and look for similarities in her situation whenever it happens. Maybe it happens when you're really busy at work, maybe it happens when you travel a lot with the dog, or maybe its triggered by the weather and she doesn't like that weather (so it could be triggered by the stress of constantly experiencing something she doesn't like), or maybe she likes the weather to much (trigger here could be over stimulation, experiencing something she likes too much, over time). These are just examples to give you a few ideas of what to look for. If you can figure out if it has any triggers, you can help your dog avoid them, or teach them how to deal with them 😊

      @@ShadeMiller I don't know about them specifically, but there are a lot of new research being done on the health of fixed and intact dogs, and theres more and more evidence supporting keeping them intact for their health (spesificly to prevent joint issues and cancer. While fixing them does prevent cancer in their reproductive organs, studies are showing an increased chance of cancer everywhere else). There are even some studies being done on how fixing affects them behaviorally.

      Here in Norway, fixing healthy dogs is illegal, but we do not have strays, abd we do not have an over population issue. Both of my female dogs (8 and 3 years) are intact, and they will never have puppies simply because I'm a responsible owner. It's really not that difficult when you know how heats work.

    Personally I find it very cute when they are nesting, treating their toys like puppies. My Husky Shira was nearly 1 year old when we were going to get her spayed but she went into her second heat cycle all of a sudden, so we had to postpone the appointment. By the time she was done with her second heat she was starting to act weird. I did some research, consulted my vet and that's when I found out about phantom pregnancy. It was cute at first but it lasted quiet a while for Shira. It wasn't just the nesting anymore but she also had some serious depression. We went on daily walks, which was great, it made her happy but as soon as we got home she was depressed again. We kept trying to play with her but she seemed uninterested, she didn't have much apetite, she didn't even want to play with my cousin's husky then. After 2-3 weeks all the symptoms of the phantom pregnancy were gone and Shira was back to normal. We got her spayed and yet she's still having the phantom pregnancy thing like twice a year. The good thing is that it doesn't last too long anymore and the symptoms are not that bad. Her apetite decreases a bit and she's treating her toys like puppies and is not really in the mood to play. But all this passes in a week or so. Do you think she will "grow out of it" some day?

      Girl dogs will turn into Houdini when they go into heat and do whatever they can to get to a male. Please be careful, I get the health benefits of waiting but so risky for unwanted litters

      mrspaisley1 We have an intact male dog next door, he’s a Frenchie so I can’t imagine how that would even work but I am absolutely not taking chances. She’s is on leash and watched 24/7 because she’s still a nosy puppy so it won’t be any problem to keep her that way until she’s spayed. No escape!!

    My grandma's husky did have this happen.
    She was spade as she would become really protective over her fake puppies but to the point were she bit my cousin and uncle as they would take her toys away.
    It did case both of them getting stitches but since being fixed she hasn't had that has

    Absolutely adorable though. I have a cat who would run by carrying her stuffed kitten which was almost as big as her. She would wash it, play with it and sleep with it but only randomly. It certainly seemed like a mothering instinct.

    When you do an educational video about the spaying, can you cover the types and pros and cons on the different types of spaying such as the removal of the uterine horns (ovariectomy) or the uterus (ovariohysterectomy)?
    I was also kind of hoping you'd explain why you were waiting until after her first heat.
    Is it so she'd finish physically maturing first before you cut off those hormones that aid in proper and regular growth?
    Thank you.

    • @silvermoon9762
      @silvermoon9762 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's in order to make sure that the dog is done growing. Waiting a year or two to spay insures that growth plates are fully formed as well as all the hormones needed when growing up get the job done well. If that makes sense.

    Oh Kira... XD Glad she didn't have it too badly! We got Terra when she was already spayed, so we never experienced this. BUT Terra does play mommy with our cats. She'll lick their privates to clean them (much to their chagrin!) and go check on them if they're making any distressing noises, refereeing them during playtime if they get too rough... It's really funny to watch. Anywho, thanks for the wonderful info, Jess! Hugs and love from a very smoky California!

    Yeah, been here with this issue except my neutered male dog decided to "mother" a bunch of baby rabbits. He'd bath and "potty" them just like puppies.

    Pyometra is no joke and very scary almost lost my dog to it..if it wasnt for my friend actually losing her dog I would of never known about this and been even more devastated because I was uneducated about it.

    My Springer had a phantom pregnancy and she actually started producing milk. We think its because she loves her toys so much and thinks of them as her 'babies'...she has probably over 100 toys..

    That heppened with my toy poodle, Was a nightmare, she went into "labor" that lested for hours until all the imaginary puppies were born.. Then she would take care of one or two toys as her babies, for weeks, One day she would start losing interest in the puppies and eventually stopped beeing a"mom".
    It only stopped when we finally got her fixed. This was over 15 years ago.

    My ECS went thru false pregnancy every season. I never spayed her bc I showed her. She had a squeaky toy of Tom, from Tom n Jerry, that she treated as her puppy every time this happened. We made sure the other dogs didn't mess with Tom, she carried him around, nested under the bed with him and eventually stopped after a week or so. It was interesting. We'd ask "where's your puppy?" & she'd get in your lap with him!

    We didn't plan for this to happen, but my pitbull will get phantom pregnancies every now and then and she was going through one whenever we got our husky puppy named Diego. We actually got him a little too early, but we decided to because he was already separated from his parents. So they both natural clung to each other & my pitbull thinks she has a baby husky! (He's a little over one years old now so their relationship evolved more into a little brother/big sister one)

    My dad’s old pitbull would take the baby ducks and baby kittens she found around the farm and take them back to her “nest” and treat them as her puppies. It’s very sweet but sometimes it can be really sad if they’ve lost puppies the reaction can be more sad than cute.

    Our husky puppy Stella (she turned 1 in June) experienced this exact same thing a few weeks before she was spayed. I think it really lasted about 2 weeks, but tapered off pretty quickly. We had Stella spayed in April, and she hadn’t had her first heat yet, but I think it was coming because of the symptoms she had. But we never experienced this with our other 2 huskies.

    My family had 2 bullmastives, a Long Fured light tanned Female, and a Short Fur Dark Redish/Brown Male, they both mated and had 2 litters of puppies of 12 for each 1, but both litters lost 1 puppy from being on the bottom of the puppy pile and dieing from suffocation, and because of having a lot of puppies some of them had to Bottle Feed, oh and both of the parents were Purebred Bullmastives [Note: they had the 2ed litter a few years after the first 1]

    My parents didn’t spay the female dogs I grew up with and they got Pyometra back to back. Thankfully when the older one got it, we knew right away and could get her treated much faster. They both pulled through but I would never not spay any female dogs I own after that ordeal.
