I’m so pleased! I wasn’t sure about this concept before I uploaded but yes you really hit the nail on the head. Challenge your habits, work out what matters, spend accordingly and you end up with more of the things that are valuable to you, not less!
@@KirstyKirby Thank you Kirsty for all The Time, Effort, Commitment and Heartfelt Enthusiasm you invested in making your video content. It is so interesting and inspiring to watch. Continue Success for 2022. Kind regards from Ireland Kate. 👱♀️☕☕
I wish I could go back and stop myself from shopping sales and clearance racks as a hobby. Your way of saving to get the things you really care about is so wise.
You aren’t alone! Sales racks were a favourite of mine in the past too. I still love the sales, but I’m strict about what I buy now. I don’t allow myself to buy anything just because it’s in the sale if that makes sense. If I don’t love it or know with absolute certainty I will wear if I walk away. There’s always another great deal. I wish I could go back too, I have too many items I need to sell, that I won’t recoup the full money for that I bought from sales etc, but lesson learnt I suppose.
I always appreciate these kinds of videos. They help to either introduce people to a new paradigm regarding to their spending, or (like me) help to keep me on track. About 6 and a half years ago, while pregnant with my first child, I decided to commit to Dave Ramsey’s debt snowball. I know it isn’t for everyone, but it was for me! I went from being a nurse making a good income (in addition to my husband’s) but being absolutely broke and in debt, to crawling out of debt completely this past November! We have a healthy “nest egg”, but even better - we now have two children and I left my job to be a SAHM. We also purchased a home and (like you) we are making extra payments to pay it off earlier. I really am so grateful for the changes I’ve made in my spending, it has created a lot of stability in our lives. More videos like this - and congratulations on your subscriber count going up!
Hi Katie, apologies for the delay in replying I don’t always get notifications. Thanks so much for sharing your fabulous story! Like you say it’s not easy but saving and making simple changes (that I found strangely become enjoyable) really can make a huge difference. The peace of mind and feeling of security and stability is like nothing else! Thanks so much for watching, and thanks again for sharing your story. Xx
APOLOGIES for the weird swoosh noise near the end of the video, for some bizarre reason it ended up in the wrong place after uploading and I didn't notice until after the video was posted. (It should have been in line with the 'slide') Not sure if this video will be of value to you, but thought it could be an interesting insight delivered in a more relaxed chatty way. Please bear in mind we all have different circumstances, budgets and values. Sharing this with you isn't to show off, nor should there be any competition for who has spent less. I just aim for transparency to hopefully inspire you to look at your purchases with scrutiny, work out what's important to you and then perhaps spend accordingly.
Regardless of how hard you try there is always someone around the corner with a negative comment. Don't sweat the small stuff, block the haters and move on. Love your content.
So so true. It’s been a lesson I’ve most definitely learnt from my time on TH-cam. Thankfully I’ve developed a bit thicker skin than I had when I very first started uploading. Thanks for watching! 😊
I totally get the tea expense haha I'm a tea person too and once my bags run out I'm switching to loose leaf. This overview is motivating for me, it shows that a no/low buy is possible!
@@KirstyKirby So I've watched this three times now, and the thing that I find the most unbelievable is... no tv?? Hats off to you, I wouldn't know what to do all evening haha
Hey... for you, tea is clearly about nourishing the spirit. It’s actually an essential and if you spread the cost out over the year, it’s a small price to nourish something so essential. Beyond that perspective from me.... thanks for running through your thought process for the purchases you did make. it serves as encouragement and validation for me and my journey.
I don’t really drink alcohol so I guess tea is just my little vice 😂 Really glad it was interesting, I was unsure when I came up with the idea if it would resonate at all.
Boy this "no buy" is tough. I'm really frugal and buy all my clothes at the Goodwill but one trip to the mall with a friend was really tough but I didn't SPEND A DIME!!!
Congrats! Yes it’s not easy for sure, i find it does get easier and eventually not buying (well things you don’t really need anyway) becomes the norm over time x
I love that you had all the discipline and then reaped the rewards. The loose tea is amazing. I totally agree with you that the supermarket tea is like the sweepings on the ground. I'm so glad you treated yourself to this! Also the neom self spa products look amazing, the hours of self care will be amazing. You are so inspiring! Wow! Overpayments on your mortgage! I'm so inspired by you! Thank you for making these videos.
Thank you for your lovely kind comment Melissa. I didn’t manage to overpay as much as I would like this year due to a job coming to an end but hopefully I can pick it back up again next year, especially with interest rates rising so much. Would be nice to regularly overpay so when my current fix ends I’m not stuck with a large increase in payments. Thanks so much for watching! X
Thank you so much for your video. You gave me inspiration to save money. I have been feeling just out of control with money in the pandemic. For example. I wake up everyday and go for my walk. Sounds good right? Well that walk takes me to Starbucks where I get my Grande OatMilk Latte which is fantastic by the way but it is 6 bucks every time I go and I go everyday. Remember its an excuse to get out and walk I go to Starbucks meet my friends and it became a lovely social. However, 6 bucks a day x 7 days is 42 dollars a week in lattes only!!! This is 168 dollars a month on ONE LATTE !!!! That is 2,016.00 DOLLARS A YEAR ON A LATTE? I can pay my property taxes with that. Thanks for being my inspiration
Hi there! Sorry for taking so long to reply, I don’t always get notifications. Great insight you shared here, small spends, especially regular ones, can really add up! And when you think of what they could cover if deployed elsewhere it can really be eye opening! I hope you can create a make at home latte to take with you on walks that you enjoy just as much 😉 xx
Great video. Not sure why should anyone comment negatively about how you spend YOUR money. So, do not think twice about it. And yes, good tea is gold!!!! Oh, I would love to know more about Christmas present deal with your family. We are trying to change things here as well and can use some ideas. Thank you!!! Happy New Year!!!
As they say, there’s nowt as queer as folk Mariana 😂 I had some people be very cross with me when talking about my no buy year saying I hadn’t gone far enough and shampoo and conditioner wasn’t essential 🤦♀️🤣 Yes I will revisit that subject at some point, I did do a video about it ages ago and some people were unreasonably mean so I took it down (I’m a bit thicker skinned on here these days) I’ll redo it at some point. Happy New Year to you too! X
Good on you for treating yourself after a long and I’m sure with the move, at times stressful year and saving all year. Why shouldn’t you buy what you like and enjoy and appreciate. There’s a big difference between surplus unnecessary spending and treating yourself to a handful of items which you will appreciate. By the way, I know what you mean about not wanting to pay delivery!!
Thanks for watching Sofia - I've found there are some people with ideas I find a bit odd, its probably because I talk about money saving and some people are quite extreme with their frugality (which if it works for them that's amazing), but that's not quite the message I'm trying to get across, so perhaps just a bit lost in translation maybe.
Loved your tips and thought processes. I just found you a week or two ago but it seems like you've come a long way in your life, getting better and better, and your confidence and happiness shows. Thanks for the inspiration. I am now in a No Buy, but purchased a dress today for my daughter's wedding and plane tickets to go. Was such a pleasure to know that a month of No Buy paid for about a third of what I spent. I am otherwise working on saving 60% of my take-home, thanks to you.
Ahh thank you so much for such a lovely comment. I relate completely, that’s one of the things I like most about managing my money better, by cutting expenditure that I don’t really get value from, you can have more of things that feel special to you, without feeling bad about it, if fact you just feel good about it! Hope you have a fantastic day at the wedding and congrats to your daughter!
Thank you for sharing! I found your videos about three months ago and it helped motivate me to set a plan in place to go into a low-buy this year. I watch your videos when I need motivation to walk away when tempted to mindlessly shop. It’s been great to see the journey. Thanks again! And congratulations on your new home.
I totally understand the tea order! :D I once bought around 80€ worth of tea because a shop was closing down and reduced the tea to half the price. And I totally get that you bought the tea at fortnum&mason. I went to the big London shop on a holiday a few years back and it was so gorgeous! Hope you enjoy all the tea :)
It seems I shouldn’t have worried, so many people seem to love tea and understand the order completely! I’ve not been to London for years, I would love a wander around Harrods, F&M again at some point, as you say even if you don’t buy anything the stores are beautiful!
Loved this video. It's not up to others to judge what we enjoy spending our money on. The fact is, your low spend year was really impressive and inspiring. You've really illustrated the point of frugality and saving here - to be able to make purchases that are meaningful to you whilst saving and achieving your financial goals. Brilliant! And congratulations on your house purchase, I love seeing women secure their future in this way :-)
I thank you for this video it has inspired me even more with my no spend January other than food and birthday gifts with a budget, then into a low spend year. I always used to drink loose tea and now want to try it again xx
Wow! I wish I had as much restraint as you. I think you did awesome last year. Enjoy that tea - you earned it. I started a no buy year and so far so good 😃
Aww that’s very sweet of you to say. I do find not buying much (or anything) really focuses the mind on all the lovely things most of us already have 😊
I know this is not what the video is about, BUT……..your HAIR is absolutely gorgeous!! You look so healthy and lovely! Good job with your shopping habits!
You have incredible discipline!! I'm cutting down on what I buy and how much I shop, but I also get bored if I don't have something new now and then. I guess having a goal puts it all into perspective though.
I’ve started a low-buy lifestyle (hope it sticks), and you are so inspiring! I received a bonus and gift cards from my employer at the holidays and, like you, bought durables (a replacement laptop after the old one died and a cordless electric mower so I can take care of my garden instead of hiring it done) and “luxury” consumables at my local fancy cook/baker’s shop with the store gift card (delish premium olive oil and balsamic vinegar) instead of more cooking equipment that I don’t have room to store. I’m watching my spending at the grocery and wasting nothing if I can help it. Look forward to more videos!
I am relatively frugal (willing to improve with buying clothes 🤞🏼) but I do spend quite some money on vocal classes (small choir) and also ballet class. I think these are sensible expenses. I don't want to restrict myself from everything since you can't take your material possessions with you and I still want to enjoy life. 😊
I agree Melli. There’s a balance to be made. This was a low buy year due to house purchasing, but I do agree, certainly longer term you need to find a way to reach your goals without being miserable. This year will likely be different for me, yet funnily enough something has popped up that has made me want to save 😂
@@KirstyKirby Of course, saving for a house makes everything very different! Happy that you made it! I am looking forward to hearing about your new goals if you want to share. 😊
@@melligolightly I have a follow up video planned talking through my save vs spend goals for this year. Should be filming at the weekend and hopefully up next week - the day job gets in the way of doing it as fast as I’d like to 😊
Thank you for this fabulous update!! 😄❤️ I' ve been thoroughly enjoying your videos, since I found you last year. Your encouraging! You said something in a previous video, late last year, that resonated with me. You mentioned you aren't buying 'dupes' of products anymore eg Revolution Makeup, and the like. I agree wholeheartedly that companies that blatantly copy other companies work are not who I want to support. And the products just aren't as good as the original anyway because the companies cut costs on the ingredients. They are just copies, and nothing more. I also know of a particular furniture company who dupe other successful furniture designs, so it's not just makeup. I started a Replacement Only No Buy on January 1 of this year. This is the third year in a row I've attempted to do this, failing and giving up both times previously. Last year I did pretty well until December when I just went ham 🤦♀️ I bought one item I didn't need, but then kept going. 😑 Yesterday (January 9) I unexpectedly bought a Burberry lipstick that was on sale. I got so darn excited at seeing this pretty pink lipstick at a reduced price that literally my brain started firing and I lost control of my spending. This was only nine days in 😫 All I could think was 'Buy it!' After I had left the shop, I remembered I'd started a RONB yet again, AND I'm trying to go cruelty free. Somehow I completely forgot about the cruelty free aspect when I was checking out the sale items at Burberry makeup. Smh. I was so annoyed with myself as a result of buying yet another pinky red lip stick when I have probably eight pinky red lipsticks already. I have probably three years worth of lip products at this point. I'm not giving up on my RONB this time! I'm sticking with my resolution! And I've decided I'm committing to cruelty free, no longer just 'trying' as a result of this silly purchase. I made a mistake. I'm done beating myself up. I'm human and imperfect, and I'm now more committed than ever to just keep going. Keep inspiring us. Congratulations on your new home! Totally agree on buying the things that matter to you, and working through what you have before buying more. If you have to pay postage, then make the order worth it. You rock! 🙌
Hi there, apologies for not responding sooner I don’t always get notifications. It’s quite an update from you too! 😊 It sounds to me like you’ve been doing really well to critique your spending! We are human and not perfect, but you are doing more than most to ask yourself if the purchases you are making truly work for you, I think that’s amazing. No need to beat yourself up at all! Xx
First time on your channel. I love what you are saying, and so true, I have been on a low spend for 2 years now. I do know what I will use, and take advantage of certain sales or 3 for 2 of products I need, like my expensive mouthwash or the Eco products I use for washing house and clothes. The whole purpose of low spend, and budgeting, is that you now have room financially to do this. 💕
Thanks for watching and sharing 😊 Yes I don’t advocate never buying anything long term, but by learning what actually brings value and being more mindful with purchases you actually end up with more of what you love not less. My budget for personal hygiene products etc is likely similar to what it was previously but because I don’t purchase items on a whim, I end up with the more luxury, natural products I actually really enjoy. X
Good tea is absolutely a necessity 😉and such a treat to buy yourself exactly what you like and what you know you’ll use! thanks for sharing your year with us!
Thanks Kelly! I'm really not about saving at all costs, saving has huge benefits but if you're completely miserable in the process its probably not the best - rather by cutting out unnecessary things that you don't really care for, it allows more room (and funds) for things you truly love and use. Really glad that came across :)
Many thanks for this video Kirsty. It's inspiring to hear of your commitment to a no-buy and then a low-buy year. I'd be really interested in hearing about your family's views on a no-buy Christmas. Well done on the lovely purchases - it's great to see that you've bought good quality items for yourself. Happy New Year 2022.
Happy new year to you too Sarah! I’m so pleased to hear the video was interesting, I was a little unsure if it would be before I posted. I will definitely revisit the Christmas gifting in another video at some point.
Tea!!!! Tea is an essential item, even if it is F&M! I don’t think you have gone overboard at all!!!! Well done you! Reward yourself with a long soak and a hot brew!!!!
I am so glad I have found your channel. You are so inspiring and great to hear your perspective. Makes me excited for this year and trying this no buy. ❤️
You enjoy the tea..it is full of antioxidants and makes you happy! The self care items will last a long time and you will not waste them..good investment. Wise decisions all year..you should be proud!!!
Thank you very much! I really appreciate that you wrote down all the item used in the video, including make up. I find your style very classic and beautiful 😍
I love tea so much! I always look forward to my morning cup of tea. I recently spent $80 on David’s Tea loose leaf tea, and I have enjoyed all the teas so much ☺️
I have just found your channel and I am loving your videos. I have also just bought my first home after years of saving. However I am not yet as good with saving as I want to be, and I find your videos very helpful and inspiring! Thank you for creating and sharing this with us! 😊
Hi Katie, Congrats on your new home! Thank you so much for watching, I find saving gets easier over time, pausing before spending becomes a bit of a habit. :)
My only tip is DO NOT be house poor, and do travel if possible. My only regret is not traveling more while hubby is young enough. Time goes by so fast.
I agree, I don’t know if you’ve seen my other videos but I’ve talked before about how I was very strict with myself and refused to go over budget with my house purchase (I have a more in-depth video planned on this at some point) I traveled a lot when I was younger and lived in other countries when I was a professional singer so I’m not really bothered about foreign travel anymore, I actually love the U.K. and the countryside here. Sorry to hear you have regrets, I’m sure you felt you were making the right decisions at the time.
Thank you, so pleased you enjoyed. A few people have asked me to talk through my budgeting and financial plans for 2022 so that video will be coming within the next week hopefully.
Thanks for watching Anna! Yes we all have different wants and needs, if we can get rid of the spends that aren’t aligned with what we truly want, it leaves more room for the things we do!
Wow I think after a no spend year to only buy a pair of jeans and a dress in terms of clothes is amazing! You look very glamorous do you include nail and hair treatments in your essentials. Very inspiring. Xxx
Shampoo and conditioner is essential, I don't use any further treatments really. Argan Oil from time to time but had no need to buy more over the last 2 years. Nail polish I already owned pre my no buy. I haven't needed to buy any more. This year I will need to purchase some clothing - I have a video coming up to talk through my spending plans this year - it was requested so happy to do!
Loving your content. Glad to see you uploading more. I’m currently on a no buy specifically on make up and skincare. Would love updated content on what your make up collection currently looks like xx
Good luck with your no buy Julie! Yes I will add that to the list, it’s probably been a good while since I’ve done an update. I’ve still not replaced anything yet, I can’t believe I’ve been using things up for years now! Just goes to show how out of hand collections can get. X
@@KirstyKirby yes absolutely agree. I have collected so much make up over the past 2 years and most of it is brand new untouched 🤦🏻♀️ I went down the rabbit hole of wanting to buy everything. I unsubscribed from emails and most TH-camrs. Now I’m focusing on low buy content to keep me focused. Thank you for sharing your experiences.
I found it really interesting myself just to sit and work out what I spent, even with a few treats. It was an odd year given part of it was a no buy, and part of it still being careful for my home purchase, but I didn’t really feel like I denied myself anything I really wanted. Thanks so much for watching!
Tea is my luxury item I always allow myself! A perfect thing to gift to yourself! Thanks for your videos, I really find them inspirational. Greetings from Belgium!
Seems from the comments I didn’t need to worry! Lots of people loving good quality tea 😊 I’m so pleased to hear they are helpful. I’ve only ever driven through Belgium sadly, maybe I will visit one day!
Inspiring. What about holidays and meals out? Totally understand the tea and bulk buying thing. What about other people's birthday gifts? Don't think I could stop to your level.
Hi Neil, no one is saying you should, what works for one wont necessarily work for another. I covered holidays and meals out in the video. My family also doesn't do gifting at birthdays or Christmas, I've covered this in another video in depth on my channel. The title does explain that I was on a 'Low-Buy' year.
This was great and very inspirational for a low buy! Just thinking of not spending on the little things so I can enjoy something that I truly love is a great perspective that I’m working on myself, so this was a great push to do more things in that direction ✨🙏🏻 can’t wait to see more from you 😌 hope you’re having a lovely January 🌼
Very interesting to listen to. I love to save where I can. Loved what you said about Christmas presents, so much money is wasted on unwanted gifts at Christmas and the feeling of having to buy. Where do you put, make up, hair care, perfume, do you class these as essentials or treats? Most people waste too much money. It's great to listen to how you stop doing that and be mindful on how you spend 😃
Hi Beverley, as this period in time wasn’t a no buy (or even officially a low buy) bar the first few months I didn’t put any rules on myself as to what were essentials or not. If I was on a no buy, basic personal hygiene, shampoo and conditioner would be considered an essential to me. I don’t dye my hair or anything currently and I cut it myself through the pandemic so I don’t really have any expenditures there. For makeup I haven’t bought anything in quite some time, due to overspending in the past. If I had ran out of something I genuinely need, I would repurchase even on a no buy as there is an expectation regarding level of presentation in the industry I work in, and whilst I’m sure they wouldn’t say I have to wear makeup, it is considered part of my job to look as presentable as possible. Perfume I have plenty of so hard to say as I won’t need any for some time, right now it would be a treat (as it’s not needed at all) hard to say what I would think if on a no buy. Ultimately, everyone will have different values and needs regarding ‘essentials’. I don’t have a gym membership, but some consider it vital to their physical and mental well-being so I certainly wouldn’t judge that being essential to them even if on a no buy if that makes sense. I’m also not really trying to promote saving at all costs, it’s no good being frugal to the point of misery, but to question what you truly want and need and then spend accordingly. Hope that answered your questions!
@@KirstyKirby Thank you Kirsty. I think most women have wasted money on fast fashion, make up, haircare products over the years. I too had so much makeup that I've stopped buying, as most women tend to wear similar makeup everyday. I definitely take my time to think before I buy clothes now, and I would rather buy something that will last for years and not date rather than loads of items that will not last. Interesting to listen to your advice as you pick up tips. And you also present your videos well too. 😊
This video was really helpful! I enjoyed actually seeing what a year of spending on a low buy could look like--I am just starting one and I'm trying to figure out what should and shouldn't be on my "essentials" list and how much money I want to allocate for treating myself. Also it's fun to see what are other people's personal priorities are when they treat themselves. :)
I’m so pleased it was helpful, I was really unsure if it would add any value before posting. You raise a really good point here, everyones essentials are different and that’s totally ok!
Loved this video I’m going to do it for 4weeks 🙏🏻.and I really hope I can continue 🙏🏻🙏🏻.I’m with you on the F&M orders hate thawing to pay for postage .I do one to two orders a year and that makes me feel better about it .Lovely to see you back 🙋🏼♀️❤️❤️
That’s how I originally started, way before my no buy year, just set smaller goals to challenge my spending habits. Good luck! I’m so unreasonable re delivery and it’s so silly really, without delivery drivers (who obviously get paid) I think the world would almost grind to a halt!
Absolutely agree with the tea thing! People don’t justify expensive coffee each day on a whim so why do we feel the need to justify a considered tea purchase? I was just saying the same about F&M delivery too, it’s the same at Harrods, those are my favourite teas. I won’t buy it online I save and buy all at once in store at Christmas. I love the F&M Royal Blend, still got a little left! X
I haven’t been into store in years but I must make a trip soon, the stores are beautiful especially at Christmas. Royal Blend is one of my faves too. I really like the Jubilee but was out of stock so I’ll have to do without for a while lol x
Happy Sunday!! Awesome!!! Congratulations 🎉 you did great in a year. I hope this time next year I can say the same. You got some good stuff with what you did spend. I wear slippers all the time at home to no matter the season and I love them plus I run the dogs out for a minute in them without having to put on regular shoes. Love your videos.
I am drinking the dust from the floor but 🇬🇧 tea is way different than for me I drink a lot of herb and fruit mixes. 😎 I think you spend wise with my stuff I will still come over the year and as this alread your secon year you did very well congrats
Ha ha I just meant the stuff that was advertised as ‘loose leaf’ tea that was the supermarket own brand was really rubbish 😂 It’s a nod to the different grades of tea and tea bags tend to have the little bits of broken leaf left after the higher grades have been selected. It’s not that it’s bad necessarily, but I wasn’t happy paying a premium for loose leaf that was essentially the same grade as what is in tea bags if that makes sense!
Hi thanks for watching. Unfortunately when I moved house my empties went in the recycling so I can’t do that I’m afraid - sorry! I can maybe do one at the end of this year if that helps.
It sounds amazingly low to me. We have never called it a no or low buy but we don’t buy much yet seem to spend. I have heard other people say it doesn’t count for usual bills or if they run out of something but we do eat out once a month or more and have a coffee twice a week. Those add up. Your amount is pretty wonderful. I’m going to see what we can cut out.
I don’t think I would have managed it if I didn’t have a goal I was really working hard towards. I’m not about saving money at all costs to be honest, more about cutting the things that don’t really add value to your life to make room for more of the things that do. If those coffees really do add to your life then it’s not all bad.
I rarely spend money on products, but I spend a lot on social activities :'( it's so hard to reject invitation as it looks rude and I truly want to spend time with friends and family! but it would be at my expenses, a huge dilemma indeed
I hate paying for delivery as well! Shampoo is part of my essentials budget, how could it be considered frivolous? I also take advantage of the year end sales and value packs to stock up at a reasonable price, I get much more for my money on products I use throughout the year. Great content!
Honestly I had so many odd comments regarding my no buy year video, some were talking about how I shouldn’t have bought any personal hygiene products at all and just washed with water if it was a true no buy, that even buying food was cheating I should have grown it all myself 😂 They must live in a very different world to me! I’ve often waited for the sales, like you say if you can trust yourself not to buy loads more stuff throughout the year it’s a great way to get greater value from your money.
@@KirstyKirbyI wouldn’t worry too much about those people, I’ve had so many people tell me that I’m not vegan enough for x and y reason - but at the end of the day it’s your decision, and you decide what something means to you, not someone else. Perfection should never be the enemy of progression anyway.
We celebrated my mom’s 80th birthday there a few years ago. What sets it apart is the expensive tea tasting ceremony where you have the opportunity to sample teas from all over the world and learn about them too. We are more familiar with wine tasting in the Western Cape!
I meant extensive - albeit expensive. We are having a lovely summer. Looking forward to welcoming our British and European family and friends back in the country soon.
Sent my husband shopping with a small essential list and enough money to cover it - he came back with “bargains” - hence I owe “no spend” a good two weeks!!!!
I dont like to pay for delivery either, I always go for free delivery option if I can. Definitely been shopping less since 2020 & only get my hair cut 2 to 3 times annually, saved myself approx £400 just on this cost. 😊
@@KirstyKirby yes every bit helps 2020 was a turning point for so many people, especially on spending habits & work life balance made you realise whats more important 😊
I’m married with 4 kids. So far this January I have brought a birthday card for my son turning 14 next week, 2 packets of balloons and a container for baking. I will be purchasing school uniform and stationary soon for the kids. No birthdays etc in feb so I plan to spend zero $
@@monicayoung42 oh I actually love the idea of a birthday letter, something that could note the things that happened that year and could be kept in a memory box. I have letters from my teenage years and love looking back at them from time to time xx
I have decided to do a no buy for Make-up and body products for 6 months. And a 3 month no buy for shoes and clothes. I recently moved and it became apparent how much stuff I have to get through, and how many clothes and shoes I don’t really wear (due to the sheer amount that I have). It was overwhelming. ☹️
I know the feeling Jordan. I had been decluttering slowly for a few years whilst saving to buy a house and packing it all up to move - there was still so much stuff! In fact I have boxes of things I still don’t want to tackle now. 🤦♀️ I really think decluttering or at least really taking note of how much one has helps with reducing shopping. Good luck with your no buy. I started with a makeup no buy a few years ago and it was enlightening.
@@KirstyKirby one of the hardest things was that I thought I had been doing a good job decluttering! 😭 Good luck with going through those boxes. I am avoiding going through quite a few myself. 😅
I like the gas stove top, I was just struggling with the oven, things that should take 30 minutes were taking 90! 🤦♀️😂 It seems to be a problem across many parts of the world with escalating energy bills, fingers crossed they don’t keep climbing!
Hi sunita that’s really kind of you to say. I take different things at different times, during winter though I ensure to take Vitamin D, Vitamin C and a good quality immune boosting supplement (the one I have has things like B complex, zinc, quercetin, garlic etc). The biggest change in my health has probably been diet though, I’ve minimised processed food and try to eat very healthy foods. It’s made a difference in my waistline my skin my hair etc.
I think that when it comes to the luxury cosmetics, you could calculate how long they will last you and then calculate what you would spend on essential cosmetics (spending money on which is still a "no buy") for that amount of time and then subtract that amount from what you spent on the luxury items. That would give you an amount of what they really cost you extra. Does that make sense?
Yes this is similar to what I do anyway. I find a lot of the cheaper items I've bought in the past don't last long anyway so the price difference isn't so much in the long run. That said I'm not really trying to save money at all costs, saving to a point your life feels miserable isn't something to aim for in my eyes. I also have very sensitive skin and cannot use a lot of 'cheap' items due to reactions from the chemicals they contain, so my 'essential' is likely to be at a higher cost than someone who doesn't have such issues. If they add value, i.e. make baths really pleasurable, I'm not too worried about the cost as I don't buy any impulse items etc, so overall the cost over the year is much less than it used to be. I wasn't really saying I shouldn't have bought them or that I feel any guilt from the purchase - apologies if that wasn't clear.
How do you handle socializing with your friends if you don't eat at restaurants? I live in nyc and most (really all) of my socializing has a "restaurant" aspect to it.
We cook for each other at home! I mentioned that we like to host in the video 😊 I do appreciate peoples lives and priorities are different. I wasn’t sharing this to say this is how anyone else should live their lives, only how when you get into the habit spending less can become more part of the norm.
Hi Lana I don’t colour my hair, so haven’t had that cost. I also have just chopped it myself over the pandemic so again haven’t had that cost 🙊 I think a lot of people who do low buys still allow cuts etc for their hair as they consider it an essential.
I mean this in the friendliest way as I love your videos, but do you not go out with friends? Do you see friends? I am saving too but I just can’t imagine not seeing / socialising either my friends.
Hi Tiffany, yes I covered this in other videos. I chose not to go to restaurants etc in a year I had just made the largest purchase of my life, especially as I have long believed a recession is on its way (imminent now in my opinion). I rarely drink so bars aren’t something I hugely care for anymore, don’t care for things like the cinema. A lot of my friends and I like to host at home so we still do see one another. I also like to spend a lot of time in the countryside which is invariably free, and am a national trust life member and have been for a few years so all of their sites are essentially free to me now. A lot of my friends and family have had varying levels of comfort in regards to socialising due to Covid, some not really wanting to socialise outside the family unit and we have all been really respectful of one another, letting people know we will be available when they are comfortable again. Hope that makes sense. X
@@KirstyKirby Totally makes sense and thank you for the reply! I agree imminent... and I am in the middle of buying my first home in the midst of it all so you definitely did it all at the right time. Appreciate with all that countryside there probably is a lot to do - I guess I was thinking with my London hat on. Anyways, great achievements and love you being so transparent x
Hi there, I just went through all my bank statements on this occasion, but I have used pen and paper or excel spreadsheets in the past when wanting to stick to a budget.
So to understand, u bought nothing for ur family Christmas? I’m new to ur channel so I’m not sure if u have mom, dad etc, mine have passed on. Just trying to make this work, thanks so much😊
Loved it! The whole reason of no buys/low buys is saying no to most so we can say yes to the few most important things! Thanks for sharing 👍 😊
I’m so pleased! I wasn’t sure about this concept before I uploaded but yes you really hit the nail on the head. Challenge your habits, work out what matters, spend accordingly and you end up with more of the things that are valuable to you, not less!

Spot on!
(It should have been in line with the 'slide')
Not sure if this video will be of value to you, but thought it could be an interesting insight delivered in a more relaxed chatty way.
Loved it! Quite inspiring as I enter a no spend 4 month period 😉
@@elizabethbertsch3066 good luck!!
Really glad it resonated! I was worried a bit about this one before I uploaded.
@@KirstyKirby So I've watched this three times now, and the thing that I find the most unbelievable is... no tv?? Hats off to you, I wouldn't know what to do all evening haha
@@CaitlinSewsSometimes I watch tons of TH-cam mainly and my brother pays for Netflix for the family so I’m not that good 😉
@@KirstyKirby That makes me feel better! I watch a lot of youtube as well, I think even more than Netflix
Hey... for you, tea is clearly about nourishing the spirit. It’s actually an essential and if you spread the cost out over the year, it’s a small price to nourish something so essential. Beyond that perspective from me.... thanks for running through your thought process for the purchases you did make. it serves as encouragement and validation for me and my journey.
I don’t really drink alcohol so I guess tea is just my little vice 😂
Really glad it was interesting, I was unsure when I came up with the idea if it would resonate at all.
@@KirstyKirby You missed my point, Dear. If something nourishes your spirit.... it’s not a vice. It is healthy and it is essential to your being.
You know what feels better than leaving the mall with bags of new stuff? Leaving the mall seeing 0 deductions from your bank account!! So satisfying👏🏼
As they say, there’s nowt as queer as folk Mariana 😂 I had some people be very cross with me when talking about my no buy year saying I hadn’t gone far enough and shampoo and conditioner wasn’t essential 🤦♀️🤣
Yes I will revisit that subject at some point, I did do a video about it ages ago and some people were unreasonably mean so I took it down (I’m a bit thicker skinned on here these days) I’ll redo it at some point. Happy New Year to you too! X
@@KirstyKirby ❤💃❤
This was great. No need to justify spends, you did a great job! Inspiration for sure. My husband and i are doing a low buy for 2022! Happy New Year!
Good luck Terese!
Thanks for watching! Ahh that’s so cool that you pop back for a bit of saving motivation - Im honoured!
Thank you, I feel much happier here. 😊
You have done amazingly well all year, and I am glad you treated yourself in December. Balance is good :-) x
Agree!
Loved this video. It's not up to others to judge what we enjoy spending our money on. The fact is, your low spend year was really impressive and inspiring. You've really illustrated the point of frugality and saving here - to be able to make purchases that are meaningful to you whilst saving and achieving your financial goals. Brilliant!
And congratulations on your house purchase, I love seeing women secure their future in this way :-)
Absolutely. You end up with more of the things that are important to you rather than less! Xx
I thank you for this video it has inspired me even more with my no spend January other than food and birthday gifts with a budget, then into a low spend year. I always used to drink loose tea and now want to try it again xx
Good luck with it Lesleyanne! Oh no I feel I’ve tempted you to spend now!
Wow! I wish I had as much restraint as you. I think you did awesome last year. Enjoy that tea - you earned it. I started a no buy year and so far so good 😃
Ha ha yes I think it was the escalating prices in the housing market that kept me so focused! I dare say I’ll possibly spend a bit more this year 😬
You have done amazingly! Areal inspiration. I’m trying to enjoy what I already have this year.
Oh that’s really kind of you to say! I’ve been eating healthier for a year and I do think it helps.
Tea is essential. 1000% understand. I purchase large orders of tea one/twice year as well.
Ha ha it looks like I shouldn’t have worried about sharing my spend on tea! Many comments saying good quality tea is a must not a treat 😂
You have incredible discipline!! I'm cutting down on what I buy and how much I shop, but I also get bored if I don't have something new now and then. I guess having a goal puts it all into perspective though.
I definitely think having a financial goal is so important. No way would I have been so disciplined if I hadn’t had one.
Thanks for watching and thanks for sharing Nina!
I' ve been thoroughly enjoying your videos, since I found you last year.
Yesterday (January 9) I unexpectedly bought a Burberry lipstick that was on sale. I got so darn excited at seeing this pretty pink lipstick at a reduced price that literally my brain started firing and I lost control of my spending. This was only nine days in 😫 All I could think was 'Buy it!'
After I had left the shop, I remembered I'd started a RONB yet again, AND I'm trying to go cruelty free.
It sounds to me like you’ve been doing really well to critique your spending!

This is interesting. I think this year I may write down what I spend over the essentials, will be interesting to see what I spent next year!
I found it really interesting myself just to sit and work out what I spent, even with a few treats.

Your channel is fabulous!
You are so kind! x
Yes! The slippers I like are the rubber bottomed ones, so you can still pop into the garden if needs me (my old pair are now my garden slippers 😂)
@@KirstyKirby
That’s the ones 😄
I watched all your videos these are so helpful! Thanks🙌🏼💓 maybe you can do a video at the end of the year how much make up you used up this year? ☺️
If you ever come to South Africa, treat yourself to High Tea at the Mount Nelson Hotel in Cape Town. I think you will love it.
I’ve just googled it, it looks beautiful!
Ha ha my dad loves the bargain section at the supermarket too!
I dont like to pay for delivery either, I always go for free delivery option if I can. Definitely been shopping less since 2020 & only get my hair cut 2 to 3 times annually, saved myself approx £400 just on this cost. 😊
It’s amazing how much small changes can add up to an awful lot of money isn’t it?! 😊
@@KirstyKirby yes every bit helps 2020 was a turning point for so many people, especially on spending habits & work life balance made you realise whats more important 😊
@@hs-pj8ho totally agree!
I’m married with 4 kids. So far this January I have brought a birthday card for my son turning 14 next week, 2 packets of balloons and a container for baking.
I will be purchasing school uniform and stationary soon for the kids.
No birthdays etc in feb so I plan to spend zero $
That will be the last birthday card I buy for the kids and last balloons for the year. I’m going to start writing them a birthday letter instead.
@@monicayoung42 oh I actually love the idea of a birthday letter, something that could note the things that happened that year and could be kept in a memory box. I have letters from my teenage years and love looking back at them from time to time xx
Try Betty’s blue sapphire tea. It is fabulous. X
Thanks for the tip! 😊
Thank you for sharing
You are so lovely
❤️
Thank you so much for watching Natalia! Xx
the way i cope with money is to keep a log of everything i spend. It seems that most of my money is spent on food
Same - in respect of food! Especially when on a low buy.
Great content
Thanks Dee!
Love ur videos ‼️ could say ur savings in American money also, I have no idea
I will try to work it out in future videos (it obviously changes each day due to changes in exchange rate, but could include a rough estimate)
A gas stove is a must for me, I never liked electric stove tops and yes natural gas is very expensive in the States, especially in the inner cities.
I like the gas stove top, I was just struggling with the oven, things that should take 30 minutes were taking 90! 🤦♀️😂
It seems to be a problem across many parts of the world with escalating energy bills, fingers crossed they don’t keep climbing!
I'm interested in what supplements you take, you look super healthy.
Good job!
Thanks Vanya!
@@KirstyKirby No, of course not, it didn't come across that way. I was just referring to the numbers. Your videos are very inspirational!
@@kaskazimnoch9583 awww that’s very kind of you to say xx
How do you handle socializing with your friends if you don't eat at restaurants? I live in nyc and most (really all) of my socializing has a "restaurant" aspect to it.
We cook for each other at home! I mentioned that we like to host in the video 😊
I do appreciate peoples lives and priorities are different. I wasn’t sharing this to say this is how anyone else should live their lives, only how when you get into the habit spending less can become more part of the norm.
I was wondering what your rules were for getting your hair cut / colored?
Hi Lana I don’t colour my hair, so haven’t had that cost. I also have just chopped it myself over the pandemic so again haven’t had that cost 🙊 I think a lot of people who do low buys still allow cuts etc for their hair as they consider it an essential.
How do you count groceries house repairs or projects?
I said in the opening part of the video that I wasn’t counting food and I detailed any spend on housing repairs in the video too.
@@KirstyKirby darm sorry i was listening with my kids near must of not heard it. thank you

Thanks Amy! I definitely try to focus on quality now 😊
Can you please link the tea pls.
Hi sudha the tea is already linked in the description. Hope that helps
How do you record your spending? pen and paper?
Hi there, I just went through all my bank statements on this occasion, but I have used pen and paper or excel spreadsheets in the past when wanting to stick to a budget.
So to understand, u bought nothing for ur family Christmas? I’m new to ur channel so I’m not sure if u have mom, dad etc, mine have passed on. Just trying to make this work, thanks so much😊
That’s right, we decided a few years ago now not to do gifting. It sounds odd to some, and I’m sure it won’t be for everyone, but it works for us. X
Thanks for ur response, absolutely some of my family have done the same for holidays, & it has worked great
I'm curious, do you buy books? 😊
Hi Isabel, I do love to read but I didn’t buy any in 2021.
@@KirstyKirby Wow!
No extravagance when buying quality loose tea.
Harvesting tea is a time and labour consuming.
