Tips to Survive A No Buy or Low Buy | How To Stop Shopping

  • So many of you watched my No Buy Year Video and were inspired to try a No Buy or a Low Buy yourselves, I wanted to share the top tips that helped me survive and make it through an entire year!
    If you are looking to do a no buy year, or a smaller goal of a no buy month or a no spend month, be sure to check out my other videos too as you may find tips and insights that might help you. Doing a no buy challenge or a no spend challenge isn't easy, and I don't recommend as a permanent lifestyle, but it certainly has its benefits. You might want to take a slightly less extreme approach and try a low buy year or a low buy month instead - you'll still find plenty of tips here on my channel.
    Over the last few years, I've come to the realisation that whilst a certain level of material things do add to your life, more stuff will not necessarily make you happier. This realisation hit me when I looked around my home that was filled with stuff (so much so I felt I needed a bigger house) and couldn't say I was particularly happier than when I lived in Spain (in 2008) when everything I had with me fit in one large drawer and a very small wardrobe.
    These days I prefer to adopt a buy less, buy better approach, with a focus on quality over quantity, removing the clutter, and utilising my money in the best way possible.

    Fill the gap by reading books, cleaning the house, etc.

    • @KirstyKirby

      Yes I suggested reading books, especially if someone would like to read more as a challenge. I can’t say I find enjoyment in cleaning personally 😂 so whilst it’s certainly a needed daily task and can pass the time, I’d find more fulfilment in other goals. But I guess that’s the beauty of it, choose something that’s important to you as a goal as I said in the video, and divert the time and energy into that instead of shopping.

    this has really made me think. I am 50 and have wasted so much money on clothes over the last 30 years, I'm ashamed of myself. I'm going to give the no buy a go for 6 months, then treat myself to an outfit for my son's wedding in June. hopefully after that, i can continue with the no buy and save the money for home improvements. Thank you so much for sharing your journey and tips. I would love to see more videos from you. Congratulations on your house purchase xx

      Oh bless you Sarah, please don’t feel too badly. I’ve bought so much over the years, and we are far from alone. I certainly will buy clothes in the future, and I will probably always own more than I truly need. But nowadays I try to get the greatest value out of my purchases rather than buying things because they were a good deal or I may wear it one day - better to spend twice as much and wear it till it falls to bits, than it be a good deal and hang in the wardrobe with the tags still on!

    What has worked for me.... Since most of my ‘nonessential and nonsense buys’ have been on Amazon and EBAY, I am still putting my ‘potential buys’ in the cart, letting them ‘add up’ for a week and then shifting the money amount into my savings account and deleting the items out of my cart and sending them into oblivion. Big and aggressive and proactive wins for my savings. Anything I still want, I do a week ‘cooling-off’ period... as it turns out... I never buy after that week. And may I just say.... thank you, Kirsty, for all the encouragement. It’s been a wonderful gift.

      I do this too, this is a really helpful thing for me. I think of my cart as more of a wishlist. I always wait until the hyperfixation wears off lol. And then delete the item from my cart. It’s a small sweet win every time.

  • @kirstenm5908
    @kirstenm5908 2 ปีที่แล้ว +60

    I’m finding it easier to taper and oscillate from “low buying” to “not buying at all”, by putting things on wishlists and just leaving them there. Several weeks or even months later, I find myself looking back, deciding that 1) I no longer need or want, 2) had found something to replace it on the wishlist, 3) realized I already had something similar tucked away, 4) the product either has significantly reduced in priced or is no longer available, 5) I found a much much cheaper alternative. Then, I can purchase an item on my wishlist as a reward for a goal accomplishment (such as passing a licensing exam) or for a special day. I also have more time for more important things, when I reinvest the time I spent shopping into doing something more productive - cleaning, organizing, decluttering, reading, studying, exercising, home improvement projects, learning a new language, etc. Taking the time to reassess your needs and wants, and becoming very “strategic” in how you spend your money and time will, in many ways, be life changing.

    A couple of years ago I did this for a year. I travel 🧳 a lot as a flight attendant an also we shop a lot. That year I did zero shopping and saved all my allowances from the company (apart from food that is). By the end of the year I could pay for a 5 week trip to Argentina 🇦🇷 flights, accommodations food and a trip to Iguazu. And I had so much time during that year. No pressure to go the mall. I could relax in my room, at the beach or just have a stroll. I even downsized on unnecessary expensive coffee shops and restaurants. I realized what was important. And yes concerning clothes I still had enough to wear. Honestly: we only wear only 30% of the clothes we own ….our favorite items and the rest could realistically go. We tend to keep things for emergencies, but still… And 2022 will again be another no/low buy year. I will not be as strict as last time. But I avoid stores, online shops and window shopping (sundays are ok, here the shops are closed)

    We are so conditioned to be heavy consumers that’s it’s hard to even think about not being one. Covid helped me break that habit and I’m in such a better place. In the past year, I’ve hardly purchased any clothing, only what I actually needed. When I did purchase the clothing, I made sure it was heavily discounted and I felt great about it.

    Hey 👋
    I found you last week right in time for my No Buy year. I have been leading up to it for a few months now and I watched your videos on your journey and can relate to everything you said about it. I have my whole life and I’m 54 been a BIG shopper and way over spending and justifying it. My husband and I have been living in an apartment for 10 years because of my spending habits 😯 it’s very embarrassing to admit that. I have wasted so much money and so many years on so much stuff I don’t need or even want when I get them. I have given away things I was obsessed with getting and then didn’t even like or use. I don’t work anymore either but my husband makes a good living but the more he makes the more I would spend!!!!! I and determined to succeed in my No Buy and build our saving back which I spent all of on stuff that is so ridiculous I have no words and save money for a better place to live for us.I hope you continue to do TH-cam. Congratulations 🍾 on your house.

    You have encouraged my husband and me to do a low buy in 2022. I agree with you that it is so much better to save up to buy better quality items that you value, rather than a million cheap things. Hi Robin, good luck with it! I’m aiming for somewhat of a low buy this year, but need some clothes. As you mentioned though, I’d rather just have a few really nice items that I love than tons of stuff that hangs there unloved! You raise a great point there, if you eat out all the time, it becomes the norm and the feeling of enjoyment isn’t quite the same.

    Hi Kirsty, I'm a new subscriber. 🤗 Already enjoy your content very much. My goal is quite different from most people. I don't need to save money, I'm quite frugal in most areas and don't overspend. My problem area is clothing, the constant feeling of not having enough (scarcity mindset) and obsessing over my purchases way too much. I want more peace of mind around shopping, being content with what I own and actually using my stuff!

    • @KirstyKirby
      @KirstyKirby  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I can understand this. And I think prior to discovering the TH-cam beauty community my problem area was always clothing, by a big margin. You know what is really challenging is when you do an impromptu stop at a thrift store and find some thing incredible that is on color tag sale that you end up wearing a lot and using as a staple piece in your wardrobe or it’s a staple seasonal item… Or a beautiful piece of furniture you were looking for. Those times are absolutely worthy of the time. I kind of follow my intuition when it comes on strong to stop and check in. That’s actually the only time that I will go to the thrift now instead of when I am bored or seeking distraction. It’s really interesting how the items I have found from these impromptu stops became well loved items compared to the times I plan to thrift. I actually do spend less and I don’t spend time browsing in the same way.

    Today I am doing a no buy for lip products. I splurge on them due to boredom or emotional or impulsively. But I realized after watching another video and yours, that I should add all makeup and perfumes to the list.
    In the past I tried to stop spending on lip products, it never worked out. And the days it did work out, I would spend on something else related to beauty. I should probably take a break from sephora, since that's where my biggest spending goes to. 🙃

    • @KirstyKirby

      Good Luck Lisa! And if it makes you feel any better the very first time I tried to manage my spending on makeup, several years ago now, I was really successful but then went nuts buying random stuff as soon as the period ended. We can’t return anything in the U.K. so I really regretted doing that.

      Thanks for the advice. I stick with buying from sephora and ulta usually because I know I can return what I impulsively spent. Heb used to accept returns but due to covid they changed their policy. But I don't splurge so much on drugstore, like I do with high end.

    • @lisamaria6644

      Sometimes, I wish my lips were sensitive as my eyes are. That's what lessened my buying on my eyes. I only looked for products that were good for sensitive eyes. Eventually, I got tired of doing eye makeup and didn't have any interest in buying too much eye products. But that's when I switched to splurging on lip products.
      I splurge so much I don't have money for what I need.

      Hi Olivia - I suppose it’s each to their own. I would prefer just a few more luxury items (or things I really want, may not necessarily be luxury) than lots of items. But this is kind of the point I want to illustrate, we all have different values, priorities, likes, needs etc. By evaluating our shopping habits and what we value, we get to cut out the things that don’t really bring us value personally, to make more room for the things that do.
      I enjoy gardening too, a great way to spend time instead of shopping.

    • @dmn4747

      Yes! This has helped me a lot. I try (and succeed about 75% of the time) in looking on used and second-hand websites for pieces that I feel are missing from my wardrobe. I needed (truly) a fall/spring jacket as all I had were heavy winter coats and found a brand new Levi's denim jacket for 25 bucks. It was awesome AND now I feel it has a story which is fun. My favorite leather jacket bit the dust after years and years so now I'm slowly shopping around for a used one (in real leather to last longer) and am finding some great ones for around 50 as opposed to 200-300 new.

Make your own pizza nights , buy or make bases and then people choose toppings. Go charity shop shopping with £2 each and see who can get the best item. Try geo caching. Go to the cinema when it’s cheap, use meerkat movies. I worked on only one treat, ie if went to cinema we didn’t go out to eat on the same day. I know it’s hard, but hang in there!

      Family activities with angsty teens: -something athletic (and possibly free) -something that develops a life skill they desire to leave home with -something crafty -something horizon expanding (travel to your destination of choice can be a reward for good grades, etc.) -something in the kitchen -something to do with their and yours (you can alternate) favorite kind of music -something your family has a history with. Start by opening the possibilities so wide that they could try new things, and then launch yourselves into genuine connection by finding shared interests. They might still participate in an way that reflects their detachment style, but as long as they DO participate, everyone wins, especially kids later in life. TV does not give kids nostalgic memories of family time. This is an opportunity to make memories. 💗🙏

    I have a different method: when I get the urge to shop and buy, I do so only in stores where I can return and get a refund for the merchandise. So I do get the rush of the buy, the pleasure of having a new piece in my life, of seing myself in a different light, of touching new fabrics and colours. If, after a week, it still brings such an intense pleasure and fulfills a true function in my life, then I keep it or else I return it. 99% of the time, it gets returned and refunded. You learn a lot about your true needs this way instead of going "cold turkey" and cutting out all shopping. It's time-consuming, but sometimes, mentally and emotionnally, it is the best option.

    • @KirstyKirby
      @KirstyKirby  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree with returning things that you don’t think it will bring true value, but a lot of the people I speak with would like to not buy in the first place and vast amounts of things are not returned - hence so many items in charity shops with tags on lol.

    I agree with the buy better quality. It's taken me years to learn this with clothes. But, I also buy second hand clothes too. If they've last from someone else's use and still look good then I pick them up. One thing I do is to make some things myself or do without it. I do our own lip balm, I love Burt's bees, but those are like $3.50 a tube and I just couldn't see doing it anymore. Now I make ours for like 25 cents a tube and it's amazing. I started doing this for face cream, hand cream, facial toner etc. These all use almost all the same base ingredients. Besides no or low buy, learn to do it yourself, repairs, haircuts, sewing, cooking, painting etc.

    Similar to "sleeping on it," I feel like if it's something I think about wanting again and again, over weeks to months, then it's probably safe to say it's something that would add actual value into my life and that I will get a lot of use out of. This is one way to parse out the things that you REALLY want, vs. the impulse buys that end up getting shoved to the back of a drawer. I will actually keep lists of things I want too, let it sit, and often later when I come back to those lists, I immediately am able to remove at least 1/3 of what I had put on there.

    • @KirstyKirby
      @KirstyKirby  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes I would agree, this is really what I am trying to inspire others to do, to shop mindfully. If it’s something you really want, you know you will get value then that’s great! I don’t recommend not purchasing anything as a permanent lifestyle.
      This video was about those who want to do a ‘no buy’ or a ‘low buy’ and therefore not purchase anything or very little at all. Sorry I must not have got that across properly in my presentation.

      @KirstyKirby  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@kp74952 No not at all, I just assumed I hadn't explained the video properly. For me, what you described is more what I do as a lifestyle, embracing mindful purchases, rather than when on a no buy or low buy. I think if you REALLY want something that's where you should spend, even if it might be deemed luxury to some, rather than the random 'cheap' impulse purchases, as typically they are a bit of a waste of money as they don't offer as much value. Perhaps just a difference in approach. :)

    I just had an AH HA moment while watching tip #1..... the reason I haven't been successful yet with a no buy period is because I haven't had a firm goal. without that goal I can't say to myself something like "what do I want more, this yarn or my car paid off"

    • @KirstyKirby
      @KirstyKirby  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Honestly I really do think having a goal, be it debt repayment, house deposits, student loans etc, is key. I would never have been so strict if I hadn’t wanted to own my own place so much x

    Absolutely mortified at how much many money I've wasted over the last 20 years on clothes, shoes, bags and make up....on everything! Said once I turned 40 I need to cop on and fund my future and well I turn 41 in June and have made very little headway! I own a lovely 3 bed house and each room if FULL of clothes...just senseless! Going to a hen in a few weeks time and was like ENOUGH!!!! I can wear something beautiful from what I already own. Will I enjoy the hen any less? Definitely not! I've unsubscribed from many retailers and unfollowed bloggers this morning to help my cause. I work shift so have time off mid week a lot and stroll through shops as a hobby or even go into for a appointment and then end up in the shops....this will probably be the hardest element for me to stop. But I need to give it a go.... only came across your videos by chance this morning!

      Bless you Caroline, I can relate, clothing has always been one of my first loves - and yet I look after it all so it lasts years, and I never like parting with it! I do now look at a lot of my beautiful 'going out dresses' and think I could easily have had a few less and worn some a good few more times and been no less happy! You will certainly enjoy the hen no matter what you wear I'm sure. I love a stroll through shops (or at least I used to), TK Maxx was my fave, but I definitely think it caused me to buy so much I didnt need. I stay away now and it has really impacted my saving, as I generally only look for something when I need it. Good Luck with it! I'll be cheering you on from afar.

    My elderly late step dad, still DARNED his socks and while helping with any projects would collect and keep any straight nails being pulled out. Know what else he did? Bought a brand new luxury car every few years…..CASH! I need to cope with my ‘all or nothing’ personality. Once I give in on something, I lose my focus. AGREE 100% on just staying out of stores and not browsing aimlessly online!! Buying more stuff never crosses my mind until I do! I know all the marketing and sales techniques……but I’m often caught up in them anyway if I encounter them. 🤦🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️

    I decided not to shop anything for 6 months other than things I need and run out of, I diverted my mind on other free things which are pastime like watch tv, reading books , doing puzzles and exercising, I never felt need to shop as there was no void. It also gave me a chance to use up all the things I had bought but wasn’t using , it felt good

      Yes I’ve spoken to a lot of people in the comments who are giving it a go in 2022. Lots of people overspent/over shopped during the pandemic as a way to manage their anxiety and boredom and want to readdress habits now.
