Im a 911 driver and a fan of the brand. If you got to Stuttgart it makes sense to visit both Porsche and Mercedes museums. The right order to do them is absolutely the Porsche first because, even though it is great, it is pretty modest compared to the Merc museum which is one of the best museums ever. But I still prefer a 911 ;)
Opposite to the railway station there is a little shop selling motorsport and car related art - fantastic!

Good tip about the inner tie rods, I took my 996 out last night and I noticed it on mine, and now I know what it is ✌️

I stopped at Reims in my 996 too
I think all petrol heads do 😎

Great clip, Lee. Those turbos are stunning cars and hugely appreciating classics, no question. But they are getting into the realm of "cars too valuable to risk" for many owners. What you do very well is point out that there is a huge amount of closely related driving Thrill available in far more humbling 911 offerings. Your 996 for example. And my 997.1 C2 manual. Both still gloriously connected drives with the sharp throttle responses of NA engines, and hydraulic steering - once the rack and tie-rods are sorted of course! 😉

I think it comes down to the individual: luckily my two comrades on the trip appreciate the cars need to be driven, other owners though may have a different view. Regardless of your metric, if you can own a 911 of any vintage and get back from such a road trip and want to merely turn around and do it all again, you've got the right car!

What a great upload Lee, well done to you and your mates. More of please. I also recommend a country road trip to Zell Um See and Gmund, done it and it is fantastic.
Both very special turbos (had a 993Turbo, my favourite car yet), but the 964 3.6 is special too.
For others: Highly recommend the Museum, done it 3 times now from Australia. Absolutely worth the effort. Also the Restaurant (Christophorus) at the museum is superb.

Superb work in visiting the Museum three times from Aus! Testament to your passion but also the Museum's ability to put on a good show multiple times.

Great video Lee. Wonderful to see the underdog 996 alongside such established greats. Really gutted I couldn’t make next road trip. Would love to see the museum one day! Looking forward to the 996 road trip video 👍

What a great trip Lee! From the Porsche family estate grounds to the factory and museum - a dream trip for folks like me from the other side of the pond! As for Little Irish and the maintenance, well it all seems a bit much until it's done, then when you're on the road again - it's all worth it!

Cheers Scott, and agreed, it's better to spend the money and have a car that's perfect every time you jump in to it, rather than a car that's falling to bits while you drive it. I hope one day you'll be able to come over and visit Porscheplatz!

Wow, tie rod ends. I’ve been trying to figure out what’s been going on with my steering in my Infiniti G37 and you described it perfectly. (In the market for a 996 though!)

Nice video. You keep calling them Inner steering joints though, while the parts you are linking to and show in your video (01:25) are the Outer steering Ball Joints!

Superb, I would have liked to join you on the 996 trip but already away in the UK, a sticking point would have been an out of date passport though😁.
    Another time hopefully.

Thank you Lee, another great video 📹 If you don't mind me asking, how many kilometers do have on your vehicle now? I have a very slight noise on my Steering Rack as well. My 1999-996 has 105,000km on it.
    Ciao, from Sydney Australia! 🇦🇺
