I was in a busy and noisy bar this night and I suddenly remembered that it was Johnny's last night and told the bartender to turn on the TV . It was the final 10 minutes , and the entire bar stopped whatever they were doing to see his send-off. Jukebox was un-plugged , pool tables went dark , and no one complained . It was a MAJOR show of respect in my mind , for a man who whole heartedly deserved it .

One memorable time was when there were 8 of us hired to back him up on camera when he sang Rhinestone Cowboy. He was a nervous wreck lol and flubbed the lyrics. Good times. RIP sir

Bear in mind too that neither Ford, Carter, Reagan, nor Bush were hell bent on destroying the United States of America domestically and internationally. Unlike the world of today's late night hosts, Johnny Carson's America was not a country in which a small, radical faction of political extremists had usurped power and were carrying out policies pleasing to the Kremlin. Even Nixon-corrupt and criminal though he was-would never have dreamt of selling out the United States to the Soviet Union (Nixon was a Navy veteran, remember). Contemporary American fascism is now being rightly, publicly, and vocally opposed by people of all political persuasions and of all walks of life-including late night television hosts.

He had such a heartfelt and warm sounding voice. Even as a kid, you were interested in at least convincing your parents to let you stay up for his opening monologue. Like others on here have said, he rarely spoke of current events, never about politics and allowed his guests to shine. There were a few other talk show hosts like Mike Douglas or Dick Cavett who were similar, like your familiar family member that you adored because they had a knack for making you feel so comfortable around them.

One of the few advantages of being an AOL mod, aside from being one of the few telework jobs available back then, is that you were constantly up on the latest news. Which could sometimes have drawbacks, such as the shock of reading that Johnny was gone. He was in his 80s but I had always felt like he would just live forever. I very clearly remember that an AOL user from the UK posted "America, you will not see his like in our lifetimes." Prophetic words as we go into 2023.

Every person in the country either watched or would hear about it the next day: "Hey, did you hear what Johnny said about X last night?" There was no one who did not know who he was. When I was a little kid in the early 60's the TV was right next to my bedroom door and I would listen to him because my parents always watched Johnny. His love for people was really obvious the care that he showed his guests. But I loved his monologue stand up, and I loved it the MOST when he would tell a joke that would really fall flat and die and he would try to dig his way out of it. That was when you really saw what he was made of and how he could charm the audience. I still howl with laughter when I see his Art Fern and the mystic visitor from the East
Carnac the Magnificent. I spent so much time watching him with my parents it's like he was a member of our family

I was eight years old when Johnny Carson went off the air for the last time... and I remember sitting with my dad as he let me watch Johnny... until the jokes got sexual and he’d send me to bed. As a grown man, I appreciate the class Johnny exuded... and THESE MUSICIANS.... WORLD CLASS!!!! He’s the best there is, the best there was and the best there ever will be!

I can't believe people would dislike this. Obviously not a fan of the show, so why even watch it? Carson was the MASTER talk show host, there will never be another Johnny!

the 215 dislikes are the sociopaths with no ability to enjoy things. I feel sorry for them, which is a waste because they can't even feel "sorry".

+Louise Sturm While not the same perhaps, I know Antenna TV shows reruns of Johnny Carson's Tonight Show which I love to see, if I'm ever able to stay up late enough to tune in. They stand the test of time.

Just came across this wonderful tribute....it didn't take long for Johnny to feel like just another family member who you could count on showing up late to the house every night. And the wait was always worth it. His comedic style, class & the overall solace I felt after each show was unmatched. I miss him & the show dearly...felt like I lost a true friend & family member in 2005.

Just listen to the band playing "Memories Of You!" I know it's an old cliché, but they really don't write 'em like that anymore. What a gorgeous, bittersweet song that is. I loved it when I was young, but now that 'm 60, I get it on a whole another level. I saw the last 2 shows in 1992, and I still miss Johnny. He was in a class all his own. I haven't seen or heard anyone with his total appeal and incredible wit and timing. RIP Sir, and Thank You for all the laughs and memories. You are missed.

I was 10 years old when Johnny took over. I can remember seeing Jack Paar a couple of times, but then my older Brother went away to college and left me his 19 “ TV set. I could sit up late at nigh in my room and watch Johnny. I grew watching him and learned a lot of my sense of humor from him. There will NEVER be another Johnny Carson or Late Night show that had so many different people from all walks of life and political backgrounds. He showed no political agendas and just made us LAUGH !! Thank you Johnny for all those years.

Johnny Carson was bigger than life for me, I couldn't wait to sit & watch him each & everyone of his guests, it was the only time I could sit with my dad & really enjoyed our time together, I have for years missed him, ( Johnny Carson ) so much, I am going to buy the entire DVD collection, that's how much I loved him, & I'm going to leave the collection to my son when I'm gone, cause he knows how much I loved him, I'm hoping he'll kick back & enjoy each segment as I have

I can remember what a special treat it was to 'stay up' and watch Johnny Carson at my grandmother and aunt's house in Blytheville Arkansas. This was something that never happened on regular school nights, so it being a special time with my grandmother and aunt makes the Tonight Show a very special memory. Thank you Johnny for wonderful memories of growing up.

I was born in 61, from the age of 8 I started watching Johnny. When my mom would go out to drink and leave by myself it was Johnny who I would watch at Eleven at night. During Christmas’ it would be me and Johnny, Doc, and Ed.
I miss knowing that if it wasn’t for them and their guests, I probably would have never learned to smile or laugh.
And boy did I ever learnt to laugh.
    Thank you Johnny
