      And personal experience if possible. Or buying with good return policy. As you can see from the comments, some agree with him and praise him while others actually like the set. It only goes to show how subjective audio is just as with everything else if not even more. Crin, Timmy, HBB are good examples of that - all have different preferences and libraries. However, i do think its crucial for reviewers to be objective while reviewing a product. It may not suit your personal taste but that doesn't make it a bad product.

      @@3ildcard@Divinity_vA Honestly, I prefer subjectivity and user experience, it's interesting to know what sound he perceives and how pleasant it is for him. Still, you can say that it's a good IEM, but it's not for you. For him it's a 3 star set, but maybe for you it's a 5 star set.

    • @Hoods_
      @Hoods_ 18 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      Some reviewers spend more time on the sets, some do tip rolling or experiment with balanced cables, others prefer to use EQ, etc. But just as there are people who want to experiment, there are others who want everything to work just plug and play and it's still fine because everyone has different needs. In conclusion, subjectivity.

    Great review. I agree a lot with your take on it. It’s good, but some things are just a bit overdone. It gives an essence of “artificial detail”, which I’m sure some do like a lot.

    • @SuperReview
      @SuperReview  18 วันที่ผ่านมา +15

      Yeah honestly the IEM it reminds me most of is the KZ Castor, which is actually low-key kind of impressive for a KZ (especially at the price), but I don't really enjoy it much because it's a bit artificial sounding and too much. If it was a dessert, it'd be like pure strawberry jam filling vs. the chocolate-covered strawberry I'd rather have.

    • @tonedeafmonk
      @tonedeafmonk 18 วันที่ผ่านมา +8

      @sidesaladaudio I hear that especially on this set as a overdone harmonics , for my cmybol crashes has a second overtone of sharpness at a higher pitch like a high frequency wave that adds a layer of music that should not be there and makes it not only sound off in a unnatural way. That's how I hear it, and that is exasperated with the set I tested because there is less weight down below to counter balance the upper mids and especially those high.

    I actually bought the Estrella and used it myself for a few days but it was just crazy sharp and treble heavy to listen to anything for more than like 10 minutes (sounded deep fried and splashy). I think it’s a cool iem either way (even if I returned it) but I really don’t like how Jay acts when someone criticizes it as well as how he advertises it and even says straight up that it’s the best iem under 1000 and then reviews it as if it’s not his iem. That’s predatory business. It’s just as good if not worse than any other iem in its price bracket. I used to really love his videos and stuff but after being tricked into buying his iem, I don’t think he is trustworthy in any sense. Thanks for being honest, a lot of the reviews of this thing are by people who got payed off or friends of Jay (which I fell for like a genius).

      So you can stop bieng saucey about my review and move on and learn, or not that's a choice you make. I may have said something you didn't like to hear but ultimately you made yourself mad.
      Honestly think about the set I tested. 10db bass shelf vs your intended target and advertised boast of 15db. What do you think will happen to the sound with 33% less bass to the overall sound signature? Our ears carry sound from lowest octaves to the highest and effects each harmonics in turn. So if you hear less bass your brain will precieve more highs. That 5k peak not so good for me as was the treble extension. Sorry I didn't like your set.

    Looking at the graph, I would have come to a similar conclusion to you. However, I just bought it, listened to it and found it very engaging. To my surprise, I have not yet found it fatiguing.
    I didn't find Estrella strayed too far from Harmon that it ruined timbre for a lot of rock, metal and hip hop. If I delved into the jazz side of my library, I'm sure I would find it to be overcooked, but that's not what Estrella is for.

    This is the perfect example of everything needing more than one iem in their collection. 1 for excitement (this iem) and another to just chill out and relax to. To make this the perfect iem I would reduce the bass shelf down 2dB and reduce the 4-6kHz region about 2dB.
    But this iem is awesome when you want to rock out for an hour or so (not too long)

    • @jyan727

      @@jyan727 from what I gather, it brings down the bass and leaves everything else alone for the most part. BUT since it doesnt affect mids and treble, the high gain in those regions were intended to combat the bass levels, so by bringing down the bass with the tape mod, the high mids and treble can be too much energy for the overall mix. It can come across as too hot or spicy, sibilant, or fatiguing.
      If you love high mids and treble it might be alright with the tape mod. Im more of a bads guy and a little sensitive to the areas that are boosted past 3.5k so this set i dont think will be good for me

    The Estrella definitely leans hard into its top end. IMO the bass quality is lacking, despite its big quantity. Just doesn't compare to its top end, so I EQ the low end down a few dB. It's too much. Helps minimize the overly artificial sounding sense of contrast too. I think Jay missed the ball by deciding ultimately to kick up the bass and then tell people to do a tape mod. I suspect the folks at Ziigaat persuaded him to go for a v-shape when he really wanted to go for a vocals and treble set. Telling people to do a tape mod is not a good solution IMO.

My unit has a ton of bass and it balances the higher registers out (but I‘m kind of a treblehead). I did some comparison and the resolution is very good compared to IEMs till around 600 bucks. Reviews like these make me really appreciate reviews that have a few different IEMs to compare the one IEM to. This allows for reference points in treble, bass, mids, details, ect to be made more clearly. It gives more value and structure to the review. I do appreciate everyone having their own style of reviewing, but I think the method I’ve just layed out is a better one adapted by some reviewers out there like AtechReviews and Akros.
    I like the terminology (cooked) and the notes you draw to in your reviews, also the side view fit of the iem that you do is awesome. If you were able to draw a couple comparison to, for example, the pilgrim or mega5est in this review it would help shed light on what ways the Estrella doesn’t stack up to them.
    Just my two cents, Cheers!

    Opinions vary.... Preferences vary.... I am both treble sensitive and don't like way too much sub and mid bass presence.... If the mids are way on to my face it gives me a headache.... I prefer everything at a balance with great sound stage and details.... But its just my preference..... For me @Super*Review has been my go to reviewer with great explanations and comparisons.... I am from India.... People tend to see $50 products as expensive stuff.... So buying IEM with the price tag of more than $100 dollars is a luxury.... But I was lucky enough to try many iems from my friends and colleagues and have managed to identify my needs regarding audio products.... I would really love to ask Mark sir if spending more than 100 bucks on IEMs worth the upgrade from the cheapies of upto $50 dollar price tag? Or is it just more of diminishing return thing?
    It is my earnest request to Mark to answer this question.... ❤️ Your reviews....

    • @SuperReview
      @SuperReview  5 วันที่ผ่านมา

      There's no easy way to answer the question. I could be happy with IEMs like the Moondrop LAN and Tin C2. There are things more expensive IEMs do that I like, and that I can't find in cheaper IEMs, but there are also a lot of expensive IEMs that are way worse than C2 and LAN.
      #1 suggestion: Get good with parametric EQ. You can get results with a $50 IEM that rival expensive sets. And if you find a tuning you really like with PEQ, and want to buy an expensive IEM with that tuning, you saved yourself a lot of wasted effort trying expensive IEMs that aren't what you want.

    Funny how so many have an opinion who haven’t even tried them. I’m a basshead who is sensitive to treble. I have many basshead sets: Scarlet Mini, Legato, Bravado mkII, OH10, Doscincos, Meteors and others. I love the Doscincos so much (may be the best basshead set under $500) so was curious about the Estrellas. They’re very much like the Doscincos but have a bit more sparkle and width. The soundstage is something ethereal. It all comes down to how we listen folks. I’m an electronic musician with many headphones as well. I use the LCD X 2021 as my main cans to mix. I’m also a gamer. Let me tell you how good the Estrellas are just hooked up to my PS5 controller. The extra bass, treble and width sound amazing on the PS5. I use Spotify as my background music when I game (usually VR). There is no EQ on console Spotify as there is on mobile. The Doscincos are great for gaming but I feel the Estrellas are even better. The layering and separation are great as you mention. I have certain uses for different iems. The Doscincos are great to mix on, as are the Meteors. The Estrellas are great for just plugging in for gaming or YT music and Im a very happy owner. The dual isobaric DDs slam harder than they graph. The new E50 super tweeters sound like ESTs. The treble exists higher in your head and the music resides in a bigger space. Like the sphere of sound around your head is larger than most. It’s not an all rounder but a very important and unique iem in my lineup that gets used every day. They do better with Azla ASMR tips to enhance bass and limit treble a bit. People like Mark and Timmy etc are more neutral fans, this iem is not for them. Although I still will thank you Mark for your Meteor review that nudged me to get them. I love that the Estrella is not the same boring tuning being put out over and over again and I wanted them over the DaVinci, Hype 4 and Tea Pro, and am thrilled. This iem has had me say WOW to certain tracks more than any other.

      Jay had been hyping the Simgot EA1000 as the best IEM in it's price range. Due to this Crinacle was being inundated with requests to review the EA1000 (this was back when he was still reviewing IEMS). When he finally did he basically said the EA1000 is "mid" and has shout and treble problems and that his new upcoming collab "Singolo" had groundbreaking new tech inside and was basically the true gods gift to single DD audio that Jay had been claiming the EA1000 to be. Jay didn't take this well and responded with a video called "Why you SHOULDN'T trust Crinacle". Singolo was released and was more or less as "mid" as the EA1000 and in the interim everything has blown over and Jay and Crin have gotten passed it. Moral of the story: everyone has their own preferences.

    What is the difference between an enduser and a formal reviewer? Enduser will change the cable to graphene, select the ear pads, warm up the headphones for 100 hours. And then he will record the review. Unfortunately and fortunately, Estrella turned out to be too complicated for many people. This is what differentiates an electron microscope from a hammer. Unfortunately, you thought it was a hammer and began to evaluate it from the point of view of driving nails.
