Timely review thanks, great to see the two compared.
Good as gold man. Hope it helped
You've nailed it. I have thoroughly compared these side by side and the MTN is far superior. Both very cool, but an easy decision when you've done your homework. the MTN gear is lighter even with the rail, 100%, also what I think is a bonus is the use of the rail for other cool tech, lights, upright stands, cameras if you're that way inclined.
Well done Mtn gear. 👏
Thanks mate. Great to have someone else confirm exactly what I thought!
I think a fair review would be comparing Backlanz's Notched model and I will stick up for them here because I think they deserve some credit!
After comparing the 2 side by side at the Sika Show there was a clear difference in build quality and I actually opted for the Backlanz. The exposed springs, spikes and the workmanship wasn't really that appealing on the MTN and another thing that put me off was I heard that the bipod components were actually manufactured overseas in Asia and then assembled in NZ where as opposed to the Backlanz all the carbon and titanium is manufactured here which is pretty cool as it's true NZ made product. Installing a pic rail wasn't really appealing and it's great how a Backlanz is purpose built for a hunting rifle with no mods required.
It's pretty hard to beat the fully spring loaded legs on the Notched. I think personally it's the best leg adjustment on the market.
Another thing was the wobbly zone? Lean into it properly! It's impressively firm under load. We are shooting unreal of this bipod with solid groups at the range and shots on animals as far as 700 yards and steel at 1000. The system is different but under forward or under no load it's great in my opinion
At the Sika Show I was literally surrounded by people amazed by the Backlanz Bipods. I wouldn't discount them based on this review!
Hi mate thanks for the comment. First I’ll just say both bipods are great units, that’s why I have them there as the best 2 bipods on the market.
I have compared both bipods with twist to extend legs so it is “fair”. Comparing a notched leg bipod to a twist leg is 2 different systems.
Regarding the components I personally have no idea where both company’s get their metals from so can’t comment on that.
Regarding the mounting to the rifle, as I stated in the video the backlanz is a lot easier to fit to the rifle and I was alittle apprehensive about fitting the rail at first also. But the pic rail is one of the most widely used accessories on the market and in some cases rifle stock companies are starting to fit them from new.
I had my backlanz fitted to a carbon McMillan stock, when I removed the plate to fit the pic rail I found because of the 1 mounting point (through the sling swivel centre of the plate) after carrying the rifle hunting etc for approx a year it had dented the stock on the top edge of the mount.
I also agree that the spring loaded notched legs would be an awesome system. Adds more weight and is more expensive again though.
Regarding the “wobbly zone” no matter how hard you lean into it, it is still not as steady as the MTN, Because of the way that it’s designed.
I have personally used both bipods for about a year and have tried to make a genuine review based on using the units and figuring out the pros and cons of the bipods. I’m not attached to any company in either camp.
There is always going to be people on both sides that say this one’s better than that, but this is my personal opinion. Cheers
Yeah agreed, Backlanz is definitely superior in their quality after checking the MTN out recently. No issues shooting with my Backlanz at long range either.
Guess it comes down to the person behind the rifle.
The quick detach system on the Backlanz is awesome and it’s their own IP which is neat!
Thanks heaps for your review on the two bipods, I was researching both tonight, pricey bit of kit aren't they. Something to work towards though. Thanks again, Phil.
Cheers Phil. Yep pricey bits of kit but awesome all the same. Both companies have now brought out new models of bipods. Backlanz has their spline version to compete with the mountain bipod now. And the mountain bipod has had upgrades with a few little part replacements. Any questions just yell out
When I’m at the range I fit my backlanz facing the other way and I can load it up without any movement (legs fold back towards the trigger)
Fit it normally in the field as I like the panning feature.
Thanks for the reply mate, I didn’t think of that. Do you have to change the mount round as well? Or just the bipod?
What about shooting long range in the field? Still have the issue of going into loose mode with forward pressure. (If left on the right way)
@@WildNZOutdoors nah mate don’t need to change the mount around, it fits either way forwards or backwards.
Mine is exactly the same as your (old) one, version 2 / un-notched legs.
I only really do this at the range, I like to be able to pan around if I need a 2nd shot.
Cheers for the review mate , answered a few questions 👍
Awesome glad to hear!!
Thanks for that, great to hear the full MTN bipod review as the sound on your other full video is gone. I've got the Spartan bipod, which I like, but on the second trip I put too much pressure shooting downhill on the internal fitting and it came loose. I've since re-expoxyed in. Like you the picatiny rail put me off, but subsequently have a bush rifle, so thinking of going to the MTN, looks far more flexible and strong. Does it handle shooting downhill as extreme angles okay?
Thanks mate yea I’ll have to re upload that video.
Knowing Matt from MTN Gear if anything in the bipod broke he would replace it.
Like I said I have used it a lot in to tops country and never had any issues.
Yet to break anything. It is well made! Thanks
Im looking at a backlanz to upgrade from harris, saw this and thought shit i dont want one now, then saw old mates comment above about turning it backwards for range use! Now im back on the backlanz train again... ha
Both the backlanz and the MTN Bipods are an awesome piece of kit mate, i just found the MTN more versatile. The fact you can lower that centre of gravity is a big plus. But good luck im sure you will be stoked with either :) Yell out if you want to know anything else
hey Chris. you need a ring light if you are going to do gear reviews 😉
Thanks man, it’s on the list to get just got to get onto it :)
Cheers
No worries man
Just picked up a new backlanz bipod. This review is really piss poor and one sided as far as I'm concerned... You obviously have some sort of ties to mtn gear? The way you've showed the backlanz bipod is totally wrong and you've failed to explain the way that it works properly. Really bad form Chris
Mate, as I have stated they are both great bipods. I used the backlanz for almost a year before trialing the MTN gear bipod, so gave it a really good work out. And really enjoyed using it compared to the Harris. Can I ask how I’m using it “totally wrong”?
I am not tied to MTN Gear at all. Just like good gear.
There is always going to be people that like this one and hate that one,and the other way round.
I have genuinely just given my personal experience with it.
If backlanz were to change the way it moves and swivels under forward pressure I believe that would make it a better bipod.
Cheers
it was obvious a piss poor comment like this would come up.
Why don't you do a review yourself?
Don't be pissed because you bought the wrong bipod 😆😆😆
