Leatherman oh, @Leatherman why haven’t YOU done it? Let us sharpen ARC blade with own diamond file!

  • Ever since buying the brand new, 2023-released Leatherman ARC, I grudged, treated, and griped about the fact that I can’t sharpen its excellent MagnaCut blade with its own equally great diamond file! I have had multitools before with a removable file, so why did engineers at Leatherman, the largest tool and blade maker in the US, not think it would be a good idea?
    Well, after racking my brain for about a month, I finally decided that a DIY solution is in order. This video shows the steps (there aren’t that many) that lead to finally being able to use the sharpener on its native blade with confidence.
    Enjoy watching, but remember: this video is for entertainment purposes only, replicating anything you see in this video may lead to personal injury, material damage, and voiding the warranty on your multitool!

    It took me forever to build up the courage and get this done. I think this is a good idea and it should have been implemented by Leatherman from the start! What do you think?

    I like that Leatherman is using better steel for the blades, but wow that is a huge price hike for a little piece of magnacut. They must be buddies with benchmade and adopted their pricing strategies. Great video as always

    This is a reason I love the surge so much because I can sharpen the blade with its own file. I am trying to muster the courage to do this on my arc, you did a fantastic job job, I will say that someone I know is working on a t handle insert for the arc to gain this function, it will go into the saw slot so then you can use a surge file or saw in the arc. I would like to make the insert the same thickness to replace the “awl” and add a sarretted blade where the original saw goes because I do miss that blade on my arc. The arc is very close to perfect for me. But what you have done is great idea and has my wheels spinning. New subscribers here. Great video

    I was pretty sure you'll come to this ! GOAT tools has removable tools on its MT, seems common sense now they've done it! Can't wait for the next sharpening video ! I often use the awl and the can opener is the most used tool on my multitool : grab a pot out the fire, rip open stuff, uncooperative pistachio negociator...

    Everyone is complaining about the price but if you just go and take a look at folding knives with magna cut they are just as expensive as the arch. And the arch is American made also I don’t see the price to be that bad

    • @CuttingBoardRx
      @CuttingBoardRx  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      There is no evidence supporting the point that MagnaCut blades command higher price. In fact, the first mass produced MagnaCut folder was Hogue Deka, which was priced $139 or $10 below the more premium steel versions. Most folks are confused by what MagnaCut is and isn’t. It is a great steel but it is not a PREMIUM steel. However! Due to its higher toughness and slightly better edge retention, it is appropriate for a multi tool use, more so than the 420 used on older Leatherman models. Also, I have like 16 MagnaCut blades now because some companies stopped making my favorite models in any other steel. This is annoying because I prefer S45VN, M4 and 3V in most applications! Sorry about the rant, but…

      @@pricexs4129 there are several videos where I express the same opinion about MagnaCut. When I deduce that companies charge extra for this steel, I make the comment. The point here, it takes twice the labor to have 2 hollow ground blades, one of them fully serrated on Free P4. But due to Magnacut hype, they are getting away with it.

      Just as I have unsuccessfully been trying to understand why people are purchasing Arcs for 5 times what it costs to buy a Surge clone (which use proper 1/4 inch bits, not silly proprietary bits, along with T shank adapters). And don't cite the superior blade steel because you are already dismantling the Arc to sharpen the blade.

    I cannot say that I hate or love it since it's what you did with YOUR tool, not my tool. 😁 So if you love it, then it's great. 👍 It is cool to test and modify for practice but, personally, I would not do it with my tool (I don't have Arc), just to not void warranty. 😋 In the field, I'd hope everyone is already carrying tools (like that bit set) to take their other tools apart to begin with. So that's all you do: unscrew it and take the diamond file out, then sharpen the other blades, all while keeping warranty intact. 🤷‍♂️ I'd also just carry a tiny diamond tapered sharpener with me. 😋👍

    I really like this idea as an alternative to swapping the file for a t-shank holder like many do. However, isnt the entire point of the magnacut blade with its superior edge retention that its supposed to last long enough that you dont have to field sharpen it on its own file though? Especially if you have to remove the thumb stud every time to get the angle you want, you might as well take it home and sharpen it properly on a real stone?

    • @CuttingBoardRx
      @CuttingBoardRx  หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@kvernesdotten MagnaCut doesn’t have a superior edge retention. It’s a well balanced steel but there are many with better edge retention. Tons of videos on this topic. I think Arc should have been $90 cheaper.

      @@CuttingBoardRx To clarify, when I say superior I meant compared to the 420hc their knives usually have.

      @@kvernesdotten You gave me an idea for a short video! I will measure Rockville hardness on this MagnaCut blade and on 420HC on my LM Free P4. Anything below 59 makes MC a lot less wear resistant, so it would be a waste of money to buy the Arc in that case.

    • @kvernesdotten
      @kvernesdotten หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@CuttingBoardRx Thats a great idea, we do lack some hard numbers on leathermans "premium" blades, though they are known to be very bad compared to other dedicated pocket knives with the same steels. Leathermans S30V for instance is almost single handedly responsible for the steels negative reputation as theirs was the only one alot of people ever saw and it was notorious for snapping across the finger hole.
      Cedric&Ada did a practical edge retention test on the leatherman arc, and the cut test went from about 80 cuts to 300 when upgrading to the arc... But when he did the same test on a "real" magnacut knife that number went up to 750 so it would be fun to see the actual specs on what LM uses!
