I have the savage version which as you mentioned has cheaper wood, trigger guard and magazine. Mine is pre acutrigger and had a ridiculously heavy trigger pull but a very simple spring change fixed that. Supposedly you can dry fire mine but I don't because from what I can tell, there is nothing to stop the firing pin other than the chamber end of the barrel. I've been told that the firing pin will stop just shy of hitting the barrel??? The good news is savage certainly didn't get cheap on the accuracy. My mark II is probably the most accurate 22lr I have.

Im cleaning 1 for my buddy and his bore is shiny new also. Same mk2 lakefield rifle 22lr. I own a cooey 64b , has 2 steel 10shot mags and 1 piece rail for 4x weaver scope. Set for 20 yards. Its a very accurate 22lr semi auto. I added a shim under the barrel for a 3rd point of contact to get more even barrel harmonics. So its free floating now from the shim and it works great.

I have owned one of these for years. I use it for vermin control (raccoons and groundhogs mostly). The iron sights are fine but with my 60 year old eyes I find a scope much easier. I grew up near Lakefield Ontario and knew some guys who worked in the plant (they’d all be long since retired now), and I also knew about the fine workmanship on a relatively inexpensive firearm. I have no idea what the quality is like now that Savage owns the place, however I can imagine that it hadn’t changed at all. It’s a great rifle.

Savage MK II is basically the same gun. The factory magazines are a little crude. People recommend CSSPECS magazines (CSSPECS even lists the Lakefield MK II as compatible). They're welded instead of just crimped. If you dig around you'll see that they're salt nitrided too so they should stand the test of time in terms of corrosion.
They even sell 20 round magazines if you live in a place that isn't a communist utopia yet.
Savage 93 is only chambered in .22 WMR or .17 HMR so the magazines will probably not interchange but I'm not sure. They're supposed to be the same design otherwise.

This was my first new rifle as well. (About 1993) The very front of my stock is round though wich I haven't seen again. It was $60 brand new at a gun show. I bet I shot a half a million rounds through it. I still shoot it here and there.

Jesse, thanks for sharing. I imagine this rifle and many other Lakefields and Cooeys have similar stories. They made great first rifles.

I have one of these and for some reason I can't get the bolt to go all the way back in. Any ideas?

My guess is that the bolt released itself after it got removed from the rifle. You need to pull the rear end of the bolt and twist it back into the cocked position, you also have to hold the trigger down while putting it back on the rifle.

Carried tons, shot little. An honest hard use rifle that earned every scratch lol.
