Wow. One of the best drummers walking this planet of ours AND a thankful, humble man to boot?!?! Deen is a gift and for one I'm DAMN proud that he's the drummer of one of my favorite bands of ALL TIME!!
I so love Deen, great guy. He sees life in a very positive way. He is such a jolly person... No trace of bitterness . That's why i so love this guy 😍❤❤❤
Funny thing is that Deen does sing a couple of songs in the Journey set now, and he sounds amazing. Greatest singing drummer out there. Love this interview even though it's been out for a while. Love Deen's vibe so much. So glad he is back with Journey. He's so good. When he sang Mother, Father, I went on a quest to find out more about him. I'm hooked.
Deen if you ever get to see this, I just want you to know that I spend a lot of time listening to music cause it helps pass the time when I don't feel well. I have crohns disease and get sick often. I came across a journey concert in Manila and I was blown away by you. You brought tears to my eyes cause I wanted to listen to you forever. I grew up with Steve perry Steve Smith neal, Jonathan. AND THE Rest Of The band. You will be on my mind and in my musical soul till my last day. You are amazing. Still they ride will never be the same again since you sang it. Priceless. I wish I could see you in concert.
I'm not condoning whatever Deen has or hasn't done, or commenting upon what drugs he may have or hasn't taken. The fact is that he's an incredible drummer with an unbelievable vocal talent. I truly hope that he overcomes his current trials and tribulations.
Amen! Just think that if all these kids who are on the Rit were taken off and given #1. behavior modification and #2. taught a musical, creative, or artistic skill that satiated their neverending energy, we would have a lot more professoinal talent giving back to their community than under-achieving, low expectation, irresponsible adults today. Just something to think about.
Off of crack and meth, so sad those demons were his own demise and he had all of those people protecting him, even his 'body guard'. Glad he cleaned up, hope he stays loyal to those who've helped him.
I started playing drums when I was 13. I quit about 10 years ago. Dean is the reason I have picked the instument up and started playing again. Journey is just incredible and Dean simply rocks the house. Thanks for inspiring a 41 year old to start playing again Dean. I will live that dream of playing out live. I may never play to a crown larger than the local bar scene, but I will do it. Not doubt about it!!!!!
deen is the total total drummer period man he can play anything when i saw him first he was 16 and blew my mind.. we did many gigs and 4 albums with wild dogs and dr mastermind and had lots of fun on the road
I saw Journey last Tuesday night (10/9/2012) - IT WAS EPIC! So much energy! Had no clue Deen was as old as he is, he looks like 30ish on stage - wonderful energy and talent! Thoroughly enjoyed it!
1st Thank you DC for doing the interview. 2nd thank you for reinvigorating Journey. I am a 48 yr old die hard loyal Steve Perry fan, and thought NO F'in WAY. . . until I saw the live in Manilla. . . BRINGIN IT, both DC and AP. Thanks. I needed it more than I can say with all the music sounding exactly the same. If I can only get Eddie and Alex to pull their heads out too that will make life good. AGAIN - THANKS! Big Dave
Deen is very humble even as one of the greater drummers in rock. He paid great homeage to Steve Smith, Journey's original drummer. I got to see Deen in Hawaii for the Journey concert, great guy, fabulous singer, and awesome drummer.
My mom used to babysit his son, Kyle. I still remember, he came by our house to pick up his kid a couple times in his leather jacket looking like a rockstar. That was a few years before he began drumming for ozzy. He was married to my friend Tyler's aunt back then.
i used to watch his video 'High Performance Drumming' regularly, which i still have. It had some great ideas and playing on it. Its a shame he never did another one, the guy is a monster drummer.
Didnt know he was with Journey since early '98. I saw him at Yale in around nov '98 and thats when I didnt realize Perry wasnt singing till the 3rd song, Steve Augeri was lead. Eighteen rows back & I couldnt tell. As far as his drumming, AWESOME on this latest Eclipse cd I thought was "new" and didnt know its been out almost a year. Radios don't play this good stuff at all anymore. I like eclipse as much as my other fav, Raised on Radio. Journeys really BACK!!! Come to Boise!
Of course speaking voice is so different from singing voice. You'd be surprise people with good speaking voice sometimes can not even sing. (Or vice-versa) Deen is so cool!!
I like Deen! I always heard he was a great guy! He's funny -- maybe I should get my kid the drum kit he wants (he idolozes Bonham and Peart). Maybe a piano -- he loves Gregg Rolie! As a Steve Perry loyalist, Deen blew me away with Mother-Father ... did such justice to THE VOICE of Steve Perry!! I go back and watch it every day (though I watch the original 3x as often)! Powerful pipes Deen! What is he doing only playing drums? DO both! Hey ... if Don Henley could do it, why not Deen?
That's both awesome and sad that Deen isn't allowed to/doesn't help write new music with Journey. But he does know that he's the drummer, so he concentrates on that.
"Hey Steve! I can sing a song check this out! Or Steve Smith. Hey look at this dude check out this drum lick! He'd be like, Why??? HEEEEEH!" :-) Gotta love Deeno.
Steve Smith has such class to "opt" out because Steve Perry didn't return. Deen has so much class as a drummer...glad he is in Journey...not glad that Arnel is there, but Deen is definately great.
Dean. I had to take ridlin. got picked on because of asburgus. I hope You are recovered. I am good at impersonating Steve as well. Karaoke. live band. great job at singing. aging drums. your awesome better than Arnel Pineda. I hope to meet you some day. nice interview. Hope your doing well. Best Wishes to you Mother. Father. you nailed it.
i really miss hearing his drums in a small and i mean small room so loud that you hear him 6 hours later when youre sleeping deen would play drums while he was asl;eep his feet did double bass allnight long check out wild dogs reign of terror or dr mastermind for some of deens unrestricted balls to the walls pedal to the metal playing and his first recorded solo is on dr mastermind i love the guy his 17 year ols son is a super durmmer as well his band is called still dead.videos here
re:relightrecords U answered ur own question. He's using his "speaking voice". Human anatomy 4 some humans shows that they have 3 sets of vocal chords. Speaking could be 1, but its about using a mid chord that is used by some humans as a "singing" voice and is perfect sounding when they have the ability. The upper chord is ur falsetto, which is probably what Deen has worked in2 an incredible high voice. He's worked those higher chord chops enough that he does it w/o thinking,
but ur observation wood probably hold correct that his mid chord wood sound like what he speaks: horrendous! & the Tibetan monks have worked their lower chord in2 the unmistakable sound they make & sounds like a gutteral bass. They also have the ability 2 use all 3 @ once & can create the most ethereal sounds known 2 man.
Seems like a very neat guy...But how interesting, he has his own bus, yet Schon in the VH1 Behind the Music interview absolutely RAGGED on Perry that he had his own bus when he was trying to maintain his relationship with Sherri Swafford. And Schon said if Arnel needed his own bus with his family along that would be great. So, in other words, it is fine for everyone else, but Schon didn't think it was fine for Perry. I hate hypocrisy!!
see all his video have been removed.deen castranova car karaoke wich where great,Deen romoved filmed on 2020..liked him a a drummer/singer not a lover.
Sad he's no longer in the band because of his foolish behavior. Deen has lost my respect for beating on a woman. I think he snapped for some reason, but I don't condone hitting a woman for any reason. Dude is talented and sad he's facing prison now, not jail but prison. He's been replaced by Omar Hakim in the band now. Word is they may go back to Steve Smith. So sad man.
This man is one awesome drummer, sings great too, have seen Journey oh 3 times in the last 4 years and Deen is a monster back there!
No trace of bitterness
. That's why i so love this guy 😍❤❤❤
Love this guy, what a character! "they don't need my help".
I'm hooked.
I love Deen Castronovo the greatest drummer with a breath taking voice and look;)
superb drummer, incredible singer..seems like a great guy..Love him.
I love this guy. His humility and self depreciating humor makes him such an approachable guy.
Deen if you ever get to see this, I just want you to know that I spend a lot of time listening to music cause it helps pass the time when I don't feel well. I have crohns disease and get sick often. Bless whoever got Deen to the drums and off the Ritalin! He is a monster behind the kit not mentioning his amazing vocal chops.
I love both Steve Smith and deen castronovo, I also loves deen sense of humor. Love y'all from the Philippines.💜✌😁

Your the best! A great talent and human being!
I saw Journey last Tuesday night (10/9/2012) - IT WAS EPIC!
So much energy! Had no clue Deen was as old as he is, he looks like 30ish on stage - wonderful energy and talent! Thoroughly enjoyed it!
Great candid interview! Dean is a stud drummer!!
1st Thank you DC for doing the interview. 2nd thank you for reinvigorating Journey. I am a 48 yr old die hard loyal Steve Perry fan, and thought NO F'in WAY. . . until I saw the live in Manilla. . . I got to see Deen in Hawaii for the Journey concert, great guy, fabulous singer, and awesome drummer.
Love Deen’s laugh
Gave props to machine gun smith....nice, Love that he can feel confident enough to show respect
Deen Is an awesome drummer and also a Really nice guy.
I saw this guy at the ecenter and he hit that snare like swinging a bat. It was cool.
gotta love this guy.
Deen has had a lot of ups and downs over the years. Glad he's clean and rockin with Neal and Gregg now.
My mom used to babysit his son, Kyle. I still remember, he came by our house to pick up his kid a couple times in his leather jacket looking like a rockstar. That was a few years before he began drumming for ozzy. He was married to my friend Tyler's aunt back then.
One of the few masters of drumming!!! Deen is a big time influence of mine! Rock on Deen! : )
He is absolutely awesome
i used to watch his video 'High Performance Drumming' regularly, which i still have. It had some great ideas and playing on it. Its a shame he never did another one, the guy is a monster drummer.

Met this guy when I was a guest with Heart. Awesome guy.
I can't wait to see ya at Milano this summer!
Great Drummer and singer very underrated.Ozzys best drummer ever.
Your so modest! You da man!
Love this guy!!!!!
saw him last night....the TOTAL rock drummer, bar none!
the man is a phenomenon!!
Deen has a voice like a crazy homeless guy! hahaha Gotta love the man.
Dean sounds like a really cool dude...sad his ass got fired from Journey. Get your shit together Dean...your a badass drummer man!!!
nice person... great drummer!
Deen Castronovo would make a beautiful lead singer...he needs to sing more for Journey!!
Yes but for some reason he does not want to be the lead singer of Journey he prefers drums and as backup vocal of the main vocalist.
@@ricsheannemiles9949 Because he gets too nervous out in front.
Of course speaking voice is so different from singing voice. You'd be surprise people with good speaking voice sometimes can not even sing. (Or vice-versa) Deen is so cool!!
deen I wish you were back with Journey. I hope you get better daily and decide to play again.one day.
Jones Beach, baby!
Thanks for sharing
That's both awesome and sad that Deen isn't allowed to/doesn't help write new music with Journey. But he does know that he's the drummer, so he concentrates on that.
Deen is a worthy successor to Steve Smith. Great fit with the group.
Nice Deen !!!!
"Hey Steve! I can sing a song check this out! Or Steve Smith. Hey look at this dude check out this drum lick! He'd be like, Why??? HEEEEEH!" :-) Gotta love Deeno.
That's why he's good... Neal Peart is one of his influences!
Want this guy back in Hardline.
Deen is very hamble i like that a lot
yeah i go to his house like everyday and play on his drumset.
@swabbles808 Actually, Aynsley Dunbar was Journey's original drummer.
I agree!
Steve Smith has such class to "opt" out because Steve Perry didn't return. Deen has so much class as a drummer...glad he is in Journey...not glad that Arnel is there, but Deen is definately great.
Deen is hysterical xD
Dean. I had to take ridlin. got picked on because of asburgus. I hope You are recovered. I am good at impersonating Steve as well. Karaoke. live band. great job at singing. aging drums. your awesome
better than Arnel Pineda. I hope to meet you some day. nice interview. Hope your doing well. Best Wishes to you Mother. Father. you nailed it.
Seems like a very neat guy...
I love you dean mwahhh!!!
Deen has John Patitucci´s voice. Exactly the same voice. By the way :Killer drumer
Did he still play Evans drumhead? Yes or no? And why?
how can a guy with a speaking voice like that sing as well as he does?!?!
Precisely 😁
Is that Steve "the service GOD" L. asking the questions?? Sure sounds like him!!
@Lorerock7
Hope to see you, there, Lorenzo!!!
i really miss hearing his drums in a small and i mean small room so loud that you hear him 6 hours later when youre sleeping deen would play drums while he was asl;eep his feet did double bass allnight long check out wild dogs reign of terror or dr mastermind for some of deens unrestricted balls to the walls pedal to the metal playing and his first recorded solo is on dr mastermind i love the guy his 17 year ols son is a super durmmer as well his band is called still dead.videos here
Haha Deen talks like a crazy homeless guy. Gotta love the man! :D
Deen: I think i'm your cousin!
Christine Castronovo Chimblo
I think you are tremendously talented
"Why?? HEEEEH!!!" :D
@janieusa Yes he does!

He'sgoofy. I like him.
Deen has EXCELLENT vocals! sounds like Steve Perry! Sounds like Steve a lot more than Arnel. Journey needs DEEN to sing more solos!
But he does not want to be the front man of Journey. He prefers to be on drums and as backup vocals.
@swabbles808 Actually, Aynsley Dunbar preceded Smith.
He can also sing better than most lead guys out there.....
Who is J.H.B.??
i don't play his tour set only the one at home and it's electric so can't help ya'.
He is still hyper.
i know this guy he live like 10 mins away from me
Is it me or he sounds like Al Pacino? At least as an impersonator... He´s a great drummer though... and a singer too!!! Big fan
but ur observation wood probably hold correct that his mid chord wood sound like what he speaks: horrendous! & the Tibetan monks have worked their lower chord in2 the unmistakable sound they make & sounds like a gutteral bass. @redlightrecords
Have you ever heard Ozzy Osborne talk?
his voice sounds raspy that you can't imagine that he can really sing high.
4:39... He is just a drummer and singer with a weird laugh :P
Seems like a very neat guy...But how interesting, he has his own bus, yet Schon in the VH1 Behind the Music interview absolutely RAGGED on Perry that he had his own bus when he was trying to maintain his relationship with Sherri Swafford. He was just in.jail lol in salem oregon

METH ROCKS!!!
it's a big bummer,that deen i got booted.they could have helped him out.schon was too busy,in stealing dude's wife.
once an abuser, always an abuser.really fooled.had much respect.did not know he is in recovery, still hatefull as hell.
see all his video have been removed.deen castranova car karaoke wich where great,Deen romoved filmed on 2020..liked him a a drummer/singer not a lover.
Im his neighboor.
I'm an addroll child..... No, seriously, I take addroll.
But I'm also prescribed to Ritalin.
So go ADHD..... or ADD. Whichever one.
Very good drummer, great showman. Can sing, they should have picked him to sing instead of the new guy.. just marketing I guess.
Sad he's no longer in the band because of his foolish behavior. Deen has lost my respect for beating on a woman. I think he snapped for some reason, but I don't condone hitting a woman for any reason. Dude is talented and sad he's facing prison now, not jail but prison. Pfft!, Evans are overated!, make your toms sound like bongos!, no depth, no treble!, nothing, a dull thud!.
Where is Remo give a nice deep tom! sound.
