I am a learner too,bought my bike last year(Honda Shadow ACE 1999'750cc)Had the same anxiety,high puls,scared of dropping the bike,first round i tripped on my feet around there i and my friend(my teacher/he have had the MC license more than 5 years)second round i lifted my feets,slow driving in 1 gear,and 2 gear..that was around a big electricity plant,big space,and then making turns,eights,brakes,slip the clutch slowley..i was in heaven over the effort to handle the bike...I hope i get the MC license this year,but the corona situation stalls it..i try to overcome roadspeeds now with the shadow,butterflies in the body when i was riding :) Thats helps to hear your beginner skills too,all of us have it,and learn of it..I had to overcome the bigness of the bike....
That's similiar to Australian testing. Two day course and a riding test... they are pretty strict, they failed people all testing day. February in Sydney is hot. You follow an instructor around some suburbs for say 30mins... but they like you to not be too cautious. As for written it's a bespoke license test at a traffic authority and i think you can get two wrong and it costs maybe $50 per try... took me 3 tries. Main difference is if you don't have a regular license it takes 3 years and three different coloured plastic tags on your bike to get a full bike license.
Just need to know one thing , why do all the people riding harley's and metrics always where all black gear ? I've been riding for almost 30 years and in those years I have figured out that BRIGHT COLORS seem to make me much more visible to bonehead auto drivers not to mention I stay way cooler when riding in the summer , you know for those of us that actually go out and ride when it's over 100 degrees . Is it the gotta fit in factor ,, or the I gotta be cool factor , or if I don't wear black all the fellas and gals won 't wanna ride with me ? Cause personally I'd rather be visible and alive than cool and dead 😁 enjoyed the video and the Roadglide video also , you've definitely got the gift of gab girl 👍 keep up the good work and be safe !!
Well I don't own a bike, but I am very interested in owning a bike. My nephew told me to get a small dirt bike to have fun. I want my first bike to be a Harley Davidson YEAH. I am watching a lot of videos on how to ride yup go "BLOCKHEAD" how to learn to ride part 1,2 &3. I'll be honest I have 2 1/2 years before my truck is paid off. Then look out Harley Davidson Shop here I come. I have 2 yrs of watching videos guys I know by then I'll be ready. Thank you Her Two Wheels and Mr. BLOCKHEAD you two are an inspiration and all the other videos I'm watching.

I got test anxiety for the skills test as well. I did really well during practice and was already practicing at home. Everyone expected me to pass. I expected to pass. I failed the skills test. I cried and cried for hours. Felt like the biggest failure felt like the biggest disappointment. I felt so hurt and defeated. Couldn't believe I failed the skills test. It worked out really well because I got to go back another day to retake the skills test and it happened to be International Women's Day when I took it for the second time and passed! I'm glad I didn't give up!

I also thought it was pretty great, not least because I also had the test anxiety problem at the end of day 2. (I at least knew it was coming) I messed up doing maneuvers I'd done dozens of times earlier the same day without trouble, and grabbed a fistful of front brake on one after panicking that I went a little wide, and would get points off, and dropped the bike. Really though, after being furious with myself for a day or two, the crustiest, most drill-sergeant like of the instructors called me up, and just wanted to see how I was doing, kinda check my mental state, and was super encouraging, and offered a few tips and such. That really helped me adjust my own attitude about things, and I did great on the re-test a few weeks later. Not exactly the same story, but similar enough, I kinda felt it, and I think more new riders need to hear this stuff, and know it's going to be ok if they just keep moving forward, however slowly they need to.

I've been on mine once and I've already burned myself and dropped her. I hurt my hip and shoulder but I got back on for a minute just to prove to myself that I was not afraid. But I'm nervous.
@@burningashes3636 I can only assume you have been doing so, but are the how-to riding videos you're watching on TH-cam helping with your anxiety?
I took a course and felt pretty confident because of the one-on-one instruction, but since watching some of the beginner rider videos online and reading threads in online riding communities, I've been able to get some good help with my own insecurities about my riding. And remember, just as with any new skill, as soon as you get over the hard bit at the beginning, the party starts!
You ride with confidence and it shows. The motorcycle will eventually be a needed part of your life and most people will not understand why. It becomes a part of who you are. Thanks for the videos.
It was definitely different learning the clutch and gears, especially since I'm not very good at hand eye coordination but man it felt so good to master it. Thanks for the video👍

Thank you so much for your honesty and story. I tried a course a few months ago and quit half way through. I thought of you and made myself take another course. I dropped the bike two hours before the last test on a practice and told my classmates I was leaving. They told me no, and I thought of you again. Something clicked and I passed the test! The real reason why I got into riding was when I was a little kid I used to always see my uncle come visit me from Paducah Kentucky every summer and he would ride all the way from there to Indiana on his 09 Harley Ultra classic. But now I ride in the memory of him

Got excited, so bought a 2010 Sportster. Took my permit test last week and failed the skills test. I was beyond disappointed and discouraged. Fantastic account of how you got into riding! It's refreshing to hear an full, honest account of your experiences - not many people talk about it and act like they were born riding. Here in the UK it's incredibly difficult, costing over £1000 and requiring 4 tests. One of the greatest things I've done though. Loving your videos - keep 'em coming!

We ride around 16,000 miles each summer, and that's just locally. We don;t go far, but we go often. Keep riding and I'll keep watching..

Great video! I was one that started by riding as a passenger with my hubby. He first had a chopper and I wouldn't ride with him much as it was UNCOMFORTABLE as a passenger...but he'd always wanted a Harley and when he bought his ultra I was hooked and would ride anywhere he wanted to go. Decided to take the class to see if I liked riding as I was actually not sure I would and he was pretty sure I would NOT. So he got me the Harley "learn to ride" course for Christmas in 2017 and when he came to watch me midway through the first day he said he knew I was hooked. I got a bike and started learning and just a month later broke my ankle! That combined with some other health problems put me on a trike for 18 months but he bought me a 2019 heritage for Christmas last year and I've already put over 12k miles on her! I totally love it.

Watched your channel and bought my first bike. Literally just took the Harley Davidson course and passed the written test but didn’t make it past day on the range. I thought of this video to help me feel more confident and not give up. I’m going back in a couple weeks and my bike is being delivered on Tuesday. Time to practice and keep practicing. Gotta keep going and learning! I never drove a manual either so it was something to get used to for sure.
Cool to hear you and your husband ride, It's awesome to go on couples adventures. It sounds (and looks) like you came a long way. My wife dumped the test bike during her training course and It was brand spanking new so don't feel bad. She turned out to be a good rider and we put on a lot of miles together, until we had kids anyway. Watching your adventures makes me want to ride again!

I’m in Illinois, Thanks for sharing your story on your learning experience on a motorcycle my first bike I believe was 2005 Suzuki GZ250 although I didn’t have my M endorsement then on my license by looked into attending a training class but was out of reach then fast forward looking at riders enjoying themselves on 2 wheels possibly a trike here and there, yes I first learned to ride by observation, in October of 2019 I took the state skills test in the small section of the parking lot at the Secretary of State, I had points against me for putting my foot down on the ground because I thought I would loose my balance but managed to pass the test on a Harley Street 500 ( very nice bike to train on when first starting to ride a motorcycle. Now I have an 02 Honda Shadow Spirit 1100 although rather loud and deceleration back fire which can be fixed with some minor adjustments but a very smooth ride. Again thanks for sharing your experiences on learning!

@@stano5102 I get what your saying and your right. 25 years in the saddle, Iv'e riden in groups as large as 3000, toy runs, benefits, rallys, you name it. I like to be alone most of the time on the bike. LOL.
Michael Strout Yes. 90% of my riding in 40 years in the saddle have been by myself. Overnights and multi day rides are better with company.
I started riding on an impulse as well. First bike was a Softail Slim. Have the low rider s now. I have text anxiety also. Hated taking the written test. Took the MSF course and practiced before hitting the roads. I learn something every time I ride. Ride safe!
Great story! I retired in 2016 and that's when I decided to get into biking. I started on a Coleman 200 minibike to get used to how countersteering works and so forth. Took the riders safety course on a Honda Rebel 250, which was pretty grueling but taught a lot and helped greatly in getting my motorcycle endorsement, plus because I have arthritis in my hands I learned a manual transmission was not for me. Apon receiving my endorsement I purchased my first scooter, a150cc Kymco, which was a great leaner, but as I got more experience was just not fast enough. Well 3 bikes later, I now have a Suzuki Burgman 400 and absolutely love it. The best parts are tha since I am retired and live in central Arizona I get to ride 365 days a year. Keep the rubber down and videos coming.

I'm not even a weekend rider I'm a season rider my life is mostly in the ocean for 10 months then 2 months on the land doing this for 18 years now . its like I'm so sad of this quarantine but seeing you and watching motorcycles makes me smile ride safe always lucky for those people who can ride during pandemic
Enjoyed videos a lot. I grew up in Columbus. Now live in SW Florida. We now have an awesome new Tri Glide Ultra and traded a beautiful 2017 Road King to get the trike. Trikes are everywhere in Florida and we ride year around. Like you, I love riding Harley’s.
Do you know that it is nice to see that a real human being is willing to talk honestly about life. You are truly blessed to talk openly about you, and others can benefit and take their own challenges knowing that you will fail once in awhile and to keep trying. My life is a constant battle and each win makes me stronger and each fail keeps me human.

I just received my MSF certificate in TN. Had no previous riding experience prior to the class. The second day of the riding course was a challenge for me. I did okay in the learning exercises, did some things better than others, but nothing great. Just when I was getting my confidence up with speed in the straight away, I had a wipeout at I think around 25-30 mph. Bike and me went tumbling and skidding. Blew out my riding shoe (laces shredded), big scrape and strawberry on my forearm, sprained shoulder. Adrenaline was pumping obviously, got back on the bike and back in line after rider coach checked on me. As more time went by, started to feel gunshy as far as speed and nerves kicked in at test time. Passed with only 3 points to spare. Quite an experience, still looking forward to riding after my shoulder gets back to baseline. Like others, I am starting out kinda late at age 53. Great inspiration from Jess on her start out story, loved it.
This story really inspires me because nobody in my family rides currently my grandfather used to ride and he always wanted me to have one and so I plan to start riding in 2026 because he would be 100 that year and I plan to ride in his memory, from what I heard here if you can ride without growing up around motorcycles and have no experience, I can do it too and pass, I enjoy watching your videos as well as taking notes on the bike controls I also study what other riders when I pull up behind them at intersections I watch how they shift very closely, you should do a video on how to turn and such, I’ll keep watching the videos as long as you keep making them

Wanted to start riding at 18. Didn't get my first bike until 26 and honestly it's been nothing but enjoyment since. I get why people choose it for such a near and dear hobby, and I fell in love with it the first moment I got on it and kept it in gear. Love the camping videos btw. It makes me want to do something similar.

As I am listening to your Story of how you became a Rider, I found a few similarities. I love hearing how people got into this enlightening "Hobby".
As for it being Scary, I think the Scary is occasional but necessary to round out the total experience.

So happy I found this video! I got myself a 883 cuz my dad and husband rides and I’ve always wanted to. The first time on it I whiskey throttled and got scared to ride again. And I also feel like I have the odds against me because I’m only 5ft, I lowered my bike but I’m still nervous. Going to take the safety class soon so I’m hoping it’ll help me with my confidence. Wish me luck!
After 15 years of riding (65 yrs old now) the second time I have no plans of stopping. The plan is to still be riding when I am 90. Right now I am making plans for a future rebuild of my 2005 Harley Road King Classic. Will be making the engine bigger so that when I have to convert it into a trike I will have the power to run it. Another really good channel is "Ride Like a Pro".

I learned to ride through Harley's Riders Edge program. It has literally saved my life more times then I can count. I decided to get a bike because my mother was on her last assignment before retiring from the military and we saw how bad gas prices were after coming back from Okinawa. My first motorcycle got me through a year of trade school for an audio diploma and helped me gain more friends through a fellow love for riding. My mother even went through a riding course and rode a little put put of a motorcycle to work. Owning a Harley has literally saved me mentally, I call my current motorcycle my two wheeled psychiatrist. I tell my family I am going on my appointment when I refer to going on a ride.
We need more women to enjoy the freedom that comes with riding a motorcycle. Keep up the great work. If you ever make it out to Vegas let me know.

I took and passed my test in July 2015. Thank you iron pony!!! Now riding a 2015 Yamaha V Star 650 custom!!! My uncle has 03 Shadow ace and my good bought a motorcycle. Those are the reason why I learned how to ride

Unfortunately, I was injured badly in a accident but I do own a Harley Deluxe. I love to polish her and think of all the places I’d be riding. I sent you a email with and idea, I hope you got it. Please try to come up here to the lake this summer.

I also had test anxiety, so when the riding test came up I started to sweat it until I realized I should just ride it like all the other exercises, that I'd already passed. I had ridden before, but that was 30+ years ago. So on a 28 degree afternoon in January I passed the test. I sweated the written at the DMV, but I got it with a question or two to spare. And in February of '18 (coincidence?) I bought my 1200RT. Been loving it ever since until quarantining in March. My battery that was in dire need of replacing died without a daily commute to keep it charged and I am overdue a 24K mile service (ordered the parts for that today). So sometime in May, Baron (my Beemer) will have her fluids, filters, plugs, and alternator belt changed; valves adjusted and a fresh battery, we'll start venturing out on the back roads again. So I got my first bike at 7 y.o. it was a Yamaha yzinger 80 been riding off road since and on road since 16 y.o. and am 26 now keep riding and remember keep the dirty side down... hope to see you out their some day
So good to hear stories like this, as a person who wants to buy a bike but keeps hearing nothing but horror stories this definitely boosts my confidence to get one. Only problem is South Florida may not be the ideal place for one lol.
Great vid. I'm going to share this with my wife. For years she was worried about motorcycles to the point I quit riding so she wouldn't worry. 20 years later I'm back on a bike (at her suggestion.....yeah, shocked me to, but who am to argue?), and she's actually reading the manual so she can get her endorsement to ride.
You and I have talked about this before in private message. We (rider coachers) work with every rider to get them through the course and if someone fails its a matter of saving their lives - AT THAT TIME. We also give a ton of suggestions on how to improve on weak areas and encourage retesting. Its not common, but there are some that take a 2nd or 3rd time for it to become a natural thing. Ride Safe... AND KEEP THOSE HANDS ON THOSE BARS :)

That's awesome, my story is similar to yours, nobody that I know friends or my family that rides a bike or is remotely interested in bikes and I was curious about getting into riding, I signed up for the msf course and needless to say I was instantly hooked. Speaking of Honda shadow's my first bike was a shadow 750, I just recently traded my 750 to the shadow 1100 and I love the extra power and is all the bike I need, been a solid bike never had any issues with it. My bikes name is Jennifer and she's my baby girl ❤
I'm 53 & I got a honda shadow 750 as a starter bike, My dad rode it & laid it down. I saw him lay it down & it bothered me. I'm more determined than ever to learn how to ride my motorcycle !! Thanks for the inspiration !!!
