Yes, on the sports-bike ride. Standing on my arms. I felt like I would have to be Charles Atlas with biceps like Paul Bunyan to be comfortable. Maybe I wasn't riding it right?
Yes, I had a loan Suzuki Bandit 1200 while my Suzuki Hayabusa was in for service and it scared the hell out of me. Felt like the front end was disconnected from the rest of the bike, steering was just all over the place! Definitely something wrong with it. With the heel/toe shifter it could probably be adjusted so you can get your toes under the toe shifter if you had another ride on it, i did that with the heel/toe on my Softail Slim :)
Yes one bad time I demoed a Harley dyna once up at Appalachian Harley (one of my many favorite dealers) that had 18in apes and forward controls. I’m 5’8 so it was interesting to ride but no way I could’ve bought and rode that bike everyday. Ride on and peace out!!
Thanks for the awesome review, Jess! I absolutely love my BMW R18 Classic. It’s so refreshing to hear such a positive review from a Road Glide rider. Both awesome machines in very different ways. Keep up the great work and be safe out there!
I understand most of your followers are HD fans. I've been riding flat twins for 44 years. Even a new wife needs saddle time to understand her qualities. The rain mode is for when riding in the rain to reduce torque and wheel spin. You should try the R9T. A different kind of beast. I call it my "hulligan" bike!! I'm loving it at age 68.😎😎
Racing motocross for 25 years leaves me with no use for a heel shifter. Totally un-natural for me and every bike I've owned that came with one had it immediately removed and thrown in the woods.
Stange, your 2018 RGS should have come with a heel toe shifter. Trust me a HT shifter is one of those things that once you get used to it you won't want to go back. I road for 27 years without one and didn't think I'd like it. But after pushing myself to get used to it...best thing since sliced bread. 😁
I have to agree with you. With 40 years under my seat of riding, most of it with pegs and toe shifting, my last bike came with floor boards and HT sifter. Love the HT shift, floor boards still getting used to.
I felt that way about hand clutch. Toe heel clutch pedals are my normal but I got used to hand clutches in a hurry after nothing but foot clutch since 1978. I still might put a hand shift on my Roadmaster.
Lol I got my first bike this year, a Harley with the ht shifter and I tried it but I just felt distracted by using the heel…but everyone seems to love it. I guess I am just odd, I like leaving my heel planted. Maybe sometime I will see the light.
@@jasong546 ya I had to push myself to get used to it. Everything is down down the only time you go up is when you put it in neutral. At the very least it'll save the top of your boot 👢 😆
Counterbalance can be difficult for ladies who have not learned modern horse riding. Initially it feels so unnatural with a leg either side. I personally felt that this was a contradictory review - praising a motorsickle with serious design faults.
My fav is the exposed chrome drive shaft. My dealer had a couple when I was picking up my bike and it might be the best looking motorcycle I've ever seen.
Heel/toe shifters are a bit to get used to. But once you have ridden awhile they are great to use with little effert. Use your toe on top, front and back shifter lever.
I totally agree other bikes use more plastic and fit and finish is not like world class… hence cheap to buy….I checked the Ducati Diavel once( expensive bike it is)… I was saddened by the fact that bike actually has very poor quality built( I mean just looking at the indicators and feeble feeling other parts on the bike)… it might have power and good suspension but it lacks solid parts… Harley-Davidson parts quality and fit and finish is the best in the world that I have seen on a cruiser( it feels like made to last).. good to see BMW in the game … they are good … competition is good and is even better if you have a formidable competition…
What is not solid on this bike? All the BMW is known for is being one of the most solid and good put together bikes. You can say much about BMW, but lack of quality is not one of them. I mean, some others that has tested this bike. Sad that it was very well put together, and felt really solid. So I think you are very much off on this. To be Frank… Think you pulling this out of your ass. And have now clue how this bike is. You just hate it, because it is not a Harley.
I wonder where the guy got the gear for his puppers. I wanna get some for my little shih tzu. Nothing says "tough biker" like tooling around town on a Harley with your shih tzu😂🤣
Lmaoooo! I have two Shihtzus and I only take one riding, the other one has back problems, plus he doesn’t like the ride. My uncle got my something very similar to what that guy had. I prop my pup inside it and he puts his little cute paws on the tank. I have a little helmet for him and also some goggles, though I think he prefers the helmet since the goggles can get a little tight on him. My little shihtzu loves it! I asked my uncle where he got it, and he said he got it on his trip while in the UK. It doesn’t have a brand name or anything. I would suggest googling online and trying to find some. They are great!
Nice review, glad you had the chance to ride another bike. It’s so much fun to ride different bikes and experience the differences. Thanks and ride safe Jess!
I LOVE when the whole handlebar shakes every time you start it. I’m into very mechanical things. That’s why I own new and old Harleys. That feel of a bike shaking at a stop is everything. Downside is I like to have highway pegs on long rides. That will never be an option on this bike. I am going to test ride one.
I own a Classic and absolutely love this machine. Have had so many different machines and the soul of this one is fabulous. Had 3 Harleys guys ,so no haters please. Also many various rides, VFR, FZ1, XS1100 GT750, Norton 850 Comando, ST1100.... so have a bazillion miles on bikes. Getting a 22 Ninja 1000SX as my next ride, the Classic stays, so I will have both Thrill and Chill. Love 💘 2wheels to all.
only issue I ever have with anything built/engineered/designed in Germany is, they try to get too cute and reinvent the wheel when it's not necessary.....
The heal toe shifter, you have to get use to using. I have one on my bike but never used the heal part until I bought new motorcycle boots and the toe would not fit under the toe shift because of the floor boards. I had to use the heal part to upshift, but now I’m use to using it and it just feels natural. I’m not sure if I’m wild about the engine design, seems like I would hit it with my legs often. I thought the reverse was a neat ideal.
Jess, I would definitely try getting a loaner R18 back home. It would give you more time to really get to know the bike, and you could easily get the gear shift lever adjusted to your foot. Besides, if Chey Leesi can ride an R18 comfortably, I can only imagine how long and hard you could ride it around Ohio. Great video. Nice to see SoCal again.
I've been really interested in these bikes but hearing that they ride harsh is a big turnoff. BMW finance also kept me away even with 50% down. So I wound up buying a bunch of used bikes instead and still had fun. Appreciate you showing the difference on a model without floorboards.
Great video again. I've been going to Cooks Corner since to late 1970's. One of my most favorite places to hang out and the cruise down is also nice (sweeping turns are the best). Keep up the awesome content.
I haven't ridden one yet. I have been told that these bikes scrape the pegs in turns. When the turns aren't even that extreme. Can you touch on any aggressive turning/leaning where you may have experienced that yourself ?
I tried a BMW before going with my Harley. The BMW’s engine looked cool enough but like you, the jugs kept getting in the way of my feet. I have large size 13 feet and to me there just wasn’t any room to move. I didn’t feel very comfortable like that. I did love the power the engine had and how smooth it was but the rest of the bike wasn’t my thing.
I have a Yamaha Royal Star Tour Deluxe with a V-4 motor. I LOVE my heal/toe shifter and, even more, I LOVE being able to stretch my legs out on the floorboards. My only "complaint" about my motorcycle is every ride is too short. But that's a good thing.
Yes. Get a loaner! They're supposed to have a lot of accessories for it. Maybe a crash guard that highway pegs could be mounted on..? ❤️ The styling too.
I rode one back in September for the local dealer event. It was weird. The first start and the jerk sideways is weird. The shifter is small and hard to fit my foot to. It was too far forward for me on the bars and my shoulders hurt after my 45 minute ride. My wife rode on the back and it was spooky without a sissy bar on the back. It was quiet. Smooth. Yes; fast and powerful. What you said is true. Good video.
That's okay as we all have that 12 year old still inside of all us and from time to time it shows itself. I rather enjoyed when she started the motorcycle up for the first time at the beginning of the video.
Good ride! I'll tell you something. For anyone that chooses to purchase this bike, you'll either love it or hate it. No in-between. The boxer-style engine is excellent, giving you plenty of power and torque, but it will soon get very tiring because of the feet issue you mentioned. I would advise taking one for a very long test ride before parting with your hard-earned Cash/bitcoin. Keep them coming (Her.two.wheels)
There will be no damage… First of, you never laying the bike down. That is either crashing or dropping the bike. And of course you get engine-gards or frame sliders on all bike. Especially when you have then tendency to crash and drop the bike all the time. I would recommend you get a smaller bike to learn how to handle one. If you laying your bike down, when something happen. That is you crashing your bike deliberate… is it not? Heard that a lot… Then you need more skills, before you hurt your self bad, or even worse… That is not good.
You talk about it's harder to lean. As an experiment when you get home try leaning only on your bike. It wont do much because the wheels are gyroscopes and maintain and up and down position. it is counter steering when turning that gives you the lean. This bike may need more force when counter steering for many different reasons. I would think this is something you would get use to like the different shifter and bike levers. You do a great job with your videos.
I’m sure I would like it. My only concern is the amount of dealerships there are as compared to Harley-Davidson also aftermarket parts to Dress it up for looks and safety.
The r18 uses old school BMW styling. The twin opposed is a very strong and cool engine. Iook at Sean smoak's channel and look back a few months. He rides one and gives the low down as a bmw tech.
The only BMW I'm considering is the R9T and I wonder how I would feel with the cylinder heads infront of my shins and the weight. I'm sure you took to it easier than I would have. I do like the more minimal approach to the top of the forks. Huge fairings and extra equipment there makes me nervous. So do floor boards as I've never ridden a bike with those. I'd like the chance to learn but I'm in absolutely no rush.
Hey Jess,. I have a Road King with a heel toe/shifter. I've tried the heel shifter and am not a fan. I strictly use the toe shifter like any other bike. Maybe you could have tried that on that BMW.
If you can get a try on a BMW R 1250 GS I would love to hear your comments on that. I know this is not the type of motorcycle that you normally ride but I think you would be highly impressed.
Hi there H2W! Much love from MN. Just thought I'd lend some knowledge. A bike with the heel/toe shift and floorboards is generally called "forward controls". And the other kind, like on your dyna are called "Mids, or Mid Controls". You and my ol lady ride/rode the same bike. She currently rides a dyna superglide too, but wants to upgrade to a road glide for her forever bike. Idk, to each their own. I'll stick with my baby, she's a customized 2005 1600 Vulcan Classic. Her name is Satisfaction, because that's what I have every time I look at her or fire her up! H Maybe we'll see ya around some time. Keep her rubber side down girl!
Great video,I recently sat on a R18 at Motorcycle live in 🇬🇧 and found the rear brake hard to get your foot on. Don’t know if available in America, have you ridden the triumph Rocket 3,if not think you’d love it,largest production built engine 2.5 litre engine, you’d love it.
I think you need one for a long term review. One that's set up for your comfort level. Little distractions can really take away from the whole experience. Could you see yourself owning one of these? BMW certainly has quite a heritage a lot like Harley-Davidson. Awesome video Jess! 🌹🙏😊
Never heard anyone say that all other motorcycles feel cheap if it’s not a Harley. Definitely heard that but in reverse and I had 3 Harley’s and the are correct
That thing looks like it has crap ergonomics and if it falls over it’s gonna be mad expensive to fix .. instead of a scratch on a crash bar u got engine damage. Can’t get to the brake pedal .. I’ll keep my Road King I’m sure you’ll be sticking with the RGS (what id do anyway) Thanks for the good content
You shift up by stepping on the heal shifter and down shift the same way with your toe. You have to use a little effort. (Use the weight of your leg it makes it a lot better) Heal toe shifters are the only true way to ride a cruiser
Glad I got to see you do a review on this bike. I was interested in them when I first found them online. However after hearing your opinions on it I dont tho k it would be the right bike for me. Thank you for this.
Wow, that is quite a motorcycle, looks like lots of power! I wish I would of known you were going to Cooks it would of been great to stop by to say hello and meet you. I have been going to Cooks since the 1970's and it is one of the best local biker bars.
Harley had this niche market covered for a while with the V-rod. My son owned one for 3 years and had none of the issues with controls or weight distribution that you disclosed with the BMW. I'm just a little doubtful of the bike's usefulness other than being a hot rod. It really sounds like a 'stoplight bike'. He went to a Road Glide and has stayed there ever since. Seems similar to your thoughts.
im solidly a triumph guy but ive always loved the look of a a classic r series bmw. these are deautiful and they look much bigger online than in person. my thing is where the cylinfers are might not be good for my big feet and the cost. though i really like it i also would rather have a lighter corner carver..
The R18 B I took out was the same, shifter and brake way in close to the bike, the jerk when you blip throttle. But even coming from a sportster it felt like a smooth old man bike. Torque? Muscle? I feel that on my sporty not this thing lol.
I used to ride an Airhead back in the day and loved them. As I got older I've experienced health issues in my legs and found the cruiser riding position to benefit me. I sat on one of these bikes at my dealer but way too cramped for me, no leg room. I'll pass.
Good looking bike. The horizontal jugs adds a unique look but being on the shorter side myself I can see where the ergonomics with the foot controls with the jugs overtop and the kickstand in the stowed position might be a concern. However as you said the machine sounds hefty and appears to be of solid sound construction. Good job describing the handling and overall performance of these motorcycles. If the opportunity ever rises I may have to try one out myself.
Looks like a pretty nice bike. Love the look of that horizontally opposed, chrome engine. It should have crash bars installed from the factory.. If that thing goes down, it could cost you half of your motor. Potentially a very expensive mishap. BMW does excel in quality and attention to detail. It does seem to be priced competitively. 300k miles should be a given with proper recommended maintenance, especially if you like long haul ridding. Nice review...as usual.
Seems like it is a comfortable ride but those jugs definitely are insanely wide looking when you look down in the video. Having reverse on a bike like that is pretty awesome. That pup was the coolest!! Ride on and peace out sweet lass!!
Like the old classic look , going retro back to the /2 lines and paint scheme, I have had several boxers with over 300 K miles, my shins are permanently scared.
Jess, if you get the chance you need to ride the Bagger, Cant really get the comparison of the cruisers until you do. Still the learning curve of the foot controls, but like you said , you have to give it time. There is still a lot to love about the r18's , the history is there ,but yes they are still new, so the aftermarket parts are coming! Really great video and review ,ride safe.
I've done test rides, but not with a group like that. Seems stressful being out on a bike for the first time with a big group...at least for the first few miles. I'm glad you got to switch to standard pegs to get a feel for that version. I had a Moto Guzzi that did the sideways shake on start up and rev. I imagine it's pretty intense with a big engine like that.
That shimmy from the BMW boxer engines, the Goldwing and the V-twin layout of the Moto Guzzi and CX500\600 series of Hondas when you hit the starter or rev it up is so addictive. I want to ride one of those some day. It would definitely be in my collection if I ever win the lottery. rofl
Love the Look, Cept the Exhaust not a fan of that, having owned a Goldwing Valkyrie i'm used to not being able to see your own feet, but the BMW with those huge jugs has no room or place for highway pegs, and i'm not a huge fan of the BMW Twist (then the bike torques to the left on start up and throttle ups) But i'm hoping to ride one at either Americade or Laconia
I've never ridden an R18 but I would love to. This bike sells in the $15 K range which is cheaper than my Harley. I would put engine guards on that bike...if I owned one.
You can just ignore the heel shift peg and shift like you normally would. Your head is just going to be spinning after a year of riding all these different motorcycles. Ride on, Jess, and Merry Christmas.
I would love to see you test the full BMW Cruiser range and I would love the base model with mini ape bars. Will they be doing safari type of club runs like the GS guys.
Have you ever had a bad time on a motorcycle?

The r18 uses old school BMW styling. The twin opposed is a very strong and cool engine. Iook at Sean smoak's channel and look back a few months. He rides one and gives the low down as a bmw tech.
I love heel shifting. I miss my bike that had heel shifting system.
Jess, Don't know the design of that bike, but on mine (Electraglide) you can raise the lever so your boot fits under it.
H
Maybe we'll see ya around some time.
I love my R18 Classic.
Heel/Toe must be set up for your boot.
I think you need one for a long term review. One that's set up for your comfort level. Little distractions can really take away from the whole experience. Could you see yourself owning one of these? BMW certainly has quite a heritage a lot like Harley-Davidson. Awesome video Jess! 🌹🙏😊
Grew up with BMW R bikes in the 60s and 70s. Nice to see them return to that basic style.👍
This bike looks just plain awkward. I really do not care for it at all. Not my “cup of tea”. Good video though. Thanks for the review.
I’ll keep my Road King
I’m sure you’ll be sticking with the RGS (what id do anyway)
Thanks for the good content
they make crash bars and valve cover sliders. to protect the engine/ bike. Just like every other kink of bike.
You shift up by stepping on the heal shifter and down shift the same way with your toe. You have to use a little effort. (Use the weight of your leg it makes it a lot better) Heal toe shifters are the only true way to ride a cruiser
I have a heel /toe shifter and use traditional shifting most of the time, I don't use my heel much
Glad I got to see you do a review on this bike. I was interested in them when I first found them online. However after hearing your opinions on it I dont tho k it would be the right bike for me. Thank you for this.
Cool bike, stick with the Harley!
Another gigantic dinosaur.
You have a heart of gold. Don't let them take it from you 👍
Guzzi is so nice and underrated overlooked bikes.
Good video, the heal toe shifter takes time to get use to but when you do it's nice
I have never ridden any BMW motorcycles, definitely an interesting motor configuration.
im solidly a triumph guy but ive always loved the look of a a classic r series bmw. these are deautiful and they look much bigger online than in person. my thing is where the cylinfers are might not be good for my big feet and the cost. though i really like it i also would rather have a lighter corner carver..
I'll pass.
So, I'm confused, isn't your Road Glide set up for heal/toe shifting? I thought all the Harley touring bikes were set up that way.
The engines of BMW bikes are so damn ugly when the cylinders move straigt out like that xD
I did a spit take when she yelled "Look at these jugs" and the guy next to her has his camera out.
Find a good used VTX 1800. You'll be good promise.
I agree
Or a Yamaha Stratoliner if you want some a bit unique.
Okay I’ve heard there are issues reaching the foot controls due to the clearance of the boxer motor ?
If you like your Road Glide you have to take the 1600 Bagger for a ride. You will get a kick out of the power
The fit and finish is great. I had a blast test riding it but I miss being able to move my feet around like on my RGS.
I will need to test drive this bike in the spring.
Great vid as always. I found it easier to press down the heel shifter with my toes instead of my heel when I was able to ride. 👍
Another awesome segment
I do like the look of that BMW
I would Rock one
Your picture quality is on point
Great frost ride! The only thing missing was the price. How much is it?
You can just ignore the heel shift peg and shift like you normally would. Your head is just going to be spinning after a year of riding all these different motorcycles. Ride on, Jess, and Merry Christmas.
that design was copied from the airplane bi-planes from the 1920's. doesn't balance right.
I would love to see you test the full BMW Cruiser range and I would love the base model with mini ape bars. Will they be doing safari type of club runs like the GS guys.
I test rode one of those… jumping back on my Triumph Bobber felt like I was riding a freak’n tricycle!
