Got to see this when traveling back in High School. Very impressive, and whetted my appetite momentarily for “dark ages” history, which is my favorite.
I really enjoyed my day at this museum. Can you believe, of the 40 odd people on a tour with me, none wanted to visit this museum and I found it fascinating and a highlight of the tour of Scandinavia.
That ship was found a short bike ride from where I was brought up in the old viking town of Tønsberg, Vestfold, Norway. Tønsberg is the oldest city in Norway. The ship was built in western Norway, which means that it must have been sailed for at least three weeks journey to get to Vestfold. It was not an inland ship. The burial site is placed a few kilometers away from the coastline, but the coastline was higher back in the 800s. So it might have been easier to bring it to the site where it was placed. Although, there is a small river that might have helped bringing it to the burial site. The burial ceremony must have been dramatic. There was a ritual where a wich offered human slaves, oxes and horses to the gods of norse belief, and it must have been a horrible blood bath. A moody place that I would recommend anyone to visit.
Likewise, my visit from which I framed this video was over 10 years ago as you can tell by the picture quality. Nevertheless it’s an amazing story to tell. Thanks for your comment.
You should remember, the Viking culture invented the word “Slave” taking it from “Slav” used to describe the occupants of Eastern Europe who they enslaved and sold. While pictured as “pillagers”, the real wealth from raids by Vikings was the slaves they took and sold. The Viking culture was a Slave Culture at its core. Does well to remind scandinavians of that fact from time to time, pulls them off their sanctimonious high horse.
Thank you so much for this wondeful video! Even I am thousand of miles away I was able to see it thru your video how intricate and amazing the Vikings were! Really appreciate this video content. Im a new subscriber all the way from the Island of the Philippines!
Glad you enjoyed the video and welcome to my channel. You might also enjoy my other two videos on the other two ship museums in Oslo, Norway. The one is on the polar explorer, the FRAM and the other is KON-TIKI ship museum.
This is the world`s finest Viking ships and to visit Oslo and not visiting this museum at Bygdöy should be punished by law (almost). The only bad thing is that the viking ship museum is old and it`s a shame that the norwegian government hasn`t built a new museum. These three ships are a world heritage and really deserves a new and better one. Norway is one of the wealthiest countries in the world and can easy afford one. Build one before it`s to late !!!
Håkan Persson Interesting comment. The three ship museums, this one, the Fram poler ship and the Kon Tiki all within a short distance of each other deserve more for sure. They are World Heritage quality to be sure. Thanks for your comment.

Buried "with her servants..." There was a distinct downside to being a servant of a Viking king or queen.
You sure got that right.
