You really do produce some of the best down to earth real world content on these old rifles. May the trail rise up to greet you.

Great shoot with that old 38-40, I love that cartridge. Just a mild 14,000 psi pressure and as sweet as can be. That 73 was a true beauty and shooting that old iron is greater fun than any of the new stuff, at least for me anyway.

Nothing nicer than an old Winchester with some honest patina

I always wondered why winchester called this the 38wcf and not the 40wcf? And for colt and other manufacturers the 40-40 sounds better than 38-40. Beautiful rifle.

Amazing '73 Mark. I built a Model 92 a few years back in 38-40 WCF and it too was a delight to shoot with its 24 inch octagon barrel. Thanks again for an informative video with a beautiful color case hardened Winchester.

That was a real treat Mark! A lovely condition but used 73 not many people would sell on a rifle like this as although in good condition is is still a usable rifle to shoot carefully. Stay safe! Chris B.

Love the area that you have for shooting.
Years ago, I had a place like this that I could shoot at.
It would be fun to be able to get out my old Winchester 94 and shoot some steel at a fair distance.
I'm limited to shooting at indoor ranges these days. None of them allow steel targets.

I've shot a 38WCF chambered 73 at 100 yards. If you focus downrange you can see the bullet flight with the naked eye. It's a fantastic round and rifle combination!

That is a very nice rifle. I have a picture of my Grate Grate Granddad with his Winchester 1873. We have no idea where that rifles is,or what it was chambered in. I don't know if I'll ever be able to afford one in shooting condition, but if I am I'll shore enjoy it.

Very nice video. If you have some videos on how YOU routinely clean your Winchesters and SAA's after black powder could you please direct me to them? If not, maybe you would consider doing one or two videos on the subject, although I think the rounds today must have been light smokelss from the scant smoke. : ) DJ

Man Mark, that’s a beautiful 73. It would be hard to let that one go. I’m the same. Definitely love the 44wcf, but now I’m thinking I need to start looking for a 38-40 now. I’ve got to get out and get to shooting some now.

I have a third model in 38WCF with same features but rifle butt plate. It's not nearly as good a condition as your example. Bore is rotted out but still shoots Cowboy Action good enough.

I have a 73 in 38-40. I haven’t shot it in many years. Best I remember, it shot pretty good but I never shot from 180 or even 100 for that matter.... Your video makes me want to get it out, dust it off and send a few rounds down range....

More information about the rifle and ammunition would make a good video even better. What year was the rifle manufactured? What GEN 1873 is it, looks like a third GEN to me. What is the groove diameter of the barrel? What is the diameter of the bullets? Are the cartridges factory or hand loaded? If handloaded what components did you use? What was the velocity of the bullet. Thanks for a good video.

Great looking rifle, I’ve got a 73 in 38-40 with the shotgun buttplate made 1881, although it’s not nearly as nice as yours. 38-40 has become about one of, if not my favorite caliber to shoot. I’ve got a 92 Winchester in it and a colt new service and 94 marlin on the way also chambered for it.
